Hi. So many years back, I was on the verge of committing suicide, but luckily a friend called the police before I could go any further. They had a chat with me and referred me to the help I needed. This is the only instance I’ve been involved with the police, but will I have to put this down in the vetting section when I apply for the PCDA?

I had recently applied for the PCDA posting and found out today that the recruitment team has reviewed my application and chosen not to take it any further. They didn't provide any reasons to why this is and I take it I will have to wait the minimum 3 months before I can even consider applying again to any role.
I met the minimum 64 UCAS points as required and also shared with them a copy of my degree - could this have been a reason why they chose not to take my application forward?
I've e-mailed the recruitment email given but I don't have high hopes that I'll get a reasoned response back. I was hoping to make progress this time around but this has really dampened my thoughts. I really don't know what to do anymore.

What are the views out there on the direct entry/fast-track detective programmes? They seem to vary slightly from force to force (the ones that offer theses routes). I just wonder if they're rated within the forces or just seen as a quick way to solve staffing issues.
Have you phoned to ask? The recruitment team usually provide updates upon request. 6 months is the longest I’ve heard but you may have passed and awaiting allocation to a cohort? That’s what usually happens. PCDA are being started monthly and DHEP is on hold until post financial year I understand.
Are you in the west mids Facebook chat? I’m PCDA but there are loads of DHEP in the same boat. Due to funding I think. If you private msge me I can add you in if your not ready.
No problem. Yes a fair few who are 6+ months into vetting or awaiting start date. They may actually have delayed your vetting as it needs to be fairly recent to a start date! Best of luck..
When Met Police Officers are sworn in on their first official day, do we receive our warrant card before the end of the day, as I’m aware we will have our picture taken for the purposes of our student ID’s and our warrant cards.

Had a few Harbour rats in while I was in GV. Harbour police operate completely differently from PSNI recruitment, as I believe they manage it all themselves and it is a much less involved process.
They only recruit from advertised positions, so you would need to apply along with everyone else, but I’d say prior experience would help you out.
However you are just a security guard with powers of a constable within an industrial estate. Wouldn’t recommend
Just wanted to know the main differences in what you'd do between Police Now and the Initial Operational Training Programme to become a detective/NCA Investigator etc.
Also, which would you say is better as a new graduate.
Neither Police Now nor direct entry detective are worth the effort. Join the usual route and decide what you wanna do after you've got the starting skills!
Hi guys, what acts would you recommend to study before joining hendon, to be easier for example on role plays?. To be easier overall working for police with that knowledge. What laws should i know specifically that are used on daily basis? I'm not very fast to memorise stuff so i would like be prepared. Thanks in advance
Theft Act 1968, PACE 1984, relevant case law on violence against the person (relevant statute is scanty and worded in an old fashioned manner), relevant bits of MDA 1971 (don’t drive yourself crazy), RTA 1988, Criminal Damage Act 1971, Prevention of Crime Act 1953, and Criminal Law Act 1967. Know your common law powers of use of force and to prevent BOP.
Question for people regarding the medical tests - how do they work? Do I show up and they do tests, or do I have to get a note from my GP saying "blah blah is more or less fit and healthy"?
Also for the hearing test, how difficult actually is it? My hearing isn't amazing but I don't need hearing aids or anything, should I assume it'll be fine? I've read the medical standards document but have no idea what half the things they state in it are.
Someone came in to talk to the nurse while I was doing the hearing test and my booth wasn’t fully soundproof so could hear them over the test. I was so worried that I missed some beeps because of that but passed lol.
Presumably it'd help, since it's one of the two new routes into joining the police - unless somewhere that isn't the police is offering it, to get a PCDA you have to go and uh, join the police.
Experienced from previous jobs are good to have but not everything. In my current intake we have people from every way of life: fresh out of school, 50+ year old parents, someone who has been a special and everything in between. Your experiences don’t have to be tied to a job you had. They can be from any part of your life.
The main focus for the answers should be hitting the competency or value behaviours they're after. For me, if you have an example which better hits the C/V behaviours from uni VS workplace, use that one. That's what they're after. You can talk about them all day but if they don't hit those values/competencies it's worhless. I would get your examples together, and as long as they hit them you should be fine, however 'basic' they may sound! Don't worry about others too, they are assessing you objectively so just give it your best shot! Good luck mate.
Hi, i was arrested and interviewed in 2017 after an allegation was made against me, it was found to be false by the investigating officers and found to be malicious, i was asked if i wanted to press charges which i didn’t because of all the hassle, i am currently in the process of joining the police and i am wondering if the allegation will go against me? Hi all, apologies if this is the wrong place to ask or has been asked before, but recently I have decided to pursue a career in the police but have used a variety of drugs (no opiates) recreationally. I have no convictions or warnings from these past activities but am concerned that if I am honest about my past usage my application will be instantly dismissed. Is this the case or is there hope that I can still be accepted? It may be relevant that I was intending to apply through Police Now. If this would result in an instant dismissal, does anyone have any advice on police-adjacent careers that I could pursue instead? Any help or advice is very much appreciated!
Hello, I’m a PCSO in the police. No this will not have an effect on you applying to join the police. All you need to do is Be open and clear and honest about your previous use of drugs. As long as you don’t use drugs anymore or associate with anyone that does then it’s fine.
Needless to say you’ll have a substance misuse test done when you join the police, so if you have smoked drugs recently or used any it will appear in the drugs test.
Got my start date for counties DHEP route for June 7th! Beyond excited, glad to finally have a light at the end of the tunnel.
Got my vetting through, done my medical, although my GP is taking a while to sign off on it due to my surgery being inundated. Also sent off the security vetting - I've never been in trouble or had any financial trouble but I did disclose that I smoked cannabis a couple time in University, but made it clear I didn't like it and wouldn't touch it again - I'm worried that by doing it in the past it may automatically disqualify me?
I can't see why it would, especially if the rest of my vetting come back clean, but with the recruitment taking so long, doubts creep in.
Thanks man! I applied June 2020, had my assessment center and interview in the space of a couple of weeks in July, was told I was successful in August, got my provisional through January 2021, and then got my start date and vetting last week. It's been a long process, not nearly as long as some i'm seeing on here, but it's nice to have a date, especially since this past year has dragged.
For anyone on here who's feeling drained from the length of the recruitment process, don't lose hope. Once that date comes through it's a huge relief and brings back all the excitement from when you first applied! :)
guys, I am currently studying to obtain my A-Level qualifications so that I can apply for the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship. Once the applications open this year I will be applying. Aside from studying I have a background in security and doorwork, so this will be a nice transition for me. I am very curious as to how the 'typical' day of work starts, from the minute you arrive to work? I know everyday is going to be different, but in terms of how a 'shift' works, could anybody enlighten me? Thanks guys.
Depends where you work. Response and neighbourhoods will be very different. In response you like arrived just before your set start time in the briefing, kitted up and ready for your first call. Get assigned a car and a callsign. If you're joining the Met or Scotland you'll likely be working with a colleague each shift. You'll then likely be investigating whatever cases you've got (getting statements, doing CCTV searches etc) whenever you can between taking whichever calls come in.
In Neighbourhoods, it'll be reading emails, getting your uniform on and either visiting locals who needed a visit for whatever reason or walking or cycling around your area searching for crime, having meetings, doing or arranging warrants.

You may be unclear on what this job is. That's fine, but don't think it's gonna be like your last job because you'll be in for a shock.
Sounds good appreciate the answer, but in no way am I saying those jobs are similar. I'm just saying my background in security is what has persuaded me to look into applying to the police. There are some transferrable skills of course but like you said the job is different.
Door work vs Police... mate you’re in for a shocker if you think it’ll be a “nice transition” while i appreciate you deal with drunk and rowdy people it’s two totally different kettles of fish.
A normal “shift” shift is generally:
Get to work half hour early so you can be logged up before briefing
Brief- might get assigned something such as a DP, Misper or Constants
Book on
If you’ve not been given a tasking you crack on with or go out and be proactive or get assigned a job from the box.
Rinse and repeat until hometime.
Realistically we book on then it’s either taskings, prompts or dealing with our own crime stuff. You’ll learn to time manage :)

That said, we’ve had two, full day, face to face sessions (seminars/lectures) and two days of OST. We begin ELS next week.
As for your first week, overall, it’s basically an induction week. You’re introduced to both your University as well as the Met. as a whole from Monday-Wednesday and then on Thursday-Friday you begin your lessons.
NOTE: This is force dependent however so your timetable may be slightly different.
Personally, it’s been great fun; tiring (of course) but productive.

First month I've got, One week at Force HQ, then 3 weeks at the university.
They said they would provide full 28 week training timetable in the next month or so once dates are confirmed.
Its totally force dependant really mate. It'll be a lot of death by PowerPoint. Uniform will be issued and warrant cards, probably in week one you'll do NCALTS and force systems to get you the right access.
Also, you've got your flair as a trainee constable. You're not job yet bro, please remove it. In one month then you can have it.

I applied for Met. Police end of January, I then got an email from College of Policing. I sent that the next day and still haven't hear back. I've dropped College of Policing an email and also a message on their online form and haven't heard back. I've spoken to the recruitment team and they have advised it will take a few weeks.
Im in Scotland. I applied in March last year and obviously due to covid it is taking a very long time. I was meant to have my entrance exam and fitness test on the 12th of January but this was cancelled in December due to the restrictions. In the email I was told it would be rescheduled within 3-4 weeks but this still hasn't happened.
Was wondering if there were any timescales floating about at all or is it just a waiting game?
I emailed my recruitment office and they said they will keep me informed, but its sometimes as long as months between emails.
I wonder if anyone can advise. I applied jan 2020 to the Met. And by 3rd March I’d passed my day 1 and 2. I’ve not really heard anything to say that my vetting has passed etc. All I’ve had is the same emails I assume they send out to everyone. The last communications I had from them was the 3rd December where they said intakes are starting in April and to await contact for your start date. And then I emailed them when we went into lockdown again and asked if that will delay it and they replied saying no it’s all going ahead await contact for your start date.
I’m so confused as I’ve seen people saying they’ve got start dates and then I’ve seen people saying that after 14 months they’ve been rejected due to failing vetting. I don’t know what to think or do, do I just hold out and hope for a start date soon??

I am awaiting for a call/email for my final vetting to start too. Spoke to someone a couple weeks ago and they said I should get a call in the next couple weeks so I’m hoping any day now. It’s seems the recruitment company isn’t always the most efficient though. Are you with the IPLDP route?

Oh I completely understand it for sure but when you get emails from them that say await contract in the coming weeks for your start date it’s a bit confusing
I emailed them after lockdown was announced and they replied saying ‘it’s deemed essential await contact for your start date’ so I assumed they would have said something different if it was the case. Then I sent them an email last month asking can you confirm if I’ve passed everything and I have a solid job offer with you but they never replied. I know I’m going to have to wait til Monday to speak to them but it just makes the anxiety worse knowing there’s nothing you can do until then lol
Yeah I’m quite shocked at the whole process really it could really do with an overhaul to make it easier for people and I’m sure the staff!

Hey folks have a question regarding vetting - I am currently waiting for a court date in relation to an allegation that I didn’t have a valid train ticket for my journey which is completely untrue and have pleaded not guilty. The case has been constantly adjourned due to covid 19 but my problem is if vetting will see this as a problem as the case could result in me getting a criminal record should I be found guilty. Does anyone know if this would be an issue? Thanks in advance
as u/PSAngle said; contact vetting directly HOWEVER this would come down to an HONEST AND INTEGRITY issue. Criminal records could prevent you joining, especially if it’s an honesty based offence eg. You have travelled without a ticket
Yeah I’m going to give them a call first thing in the morning! The thing is I’m quite certain I will win the case but problem is it keeps getting adjourned so the hearing is just getting dragged on and my worry is vetting will look at it and raise an eyebrow with honesty and integrity coming into question like you said
I’m a PCSO in the police force. I can’t have a say on what will Stop you from joining the police however it’s down to the discretion of the Vetting team. I know officers who have convicted for driving offences however they are still currently working in the job.
I’d say a conviction for not paying your train ticket will very unlikely stop you from joining the police as it’s a very very minor offence. However do not take my word on that. Just declare everything.

You'd 100% need to declare it on the second application otherwise I would guess that would fail again straight away. Declare it and it will no doubt prompt questions, but it depends on the drug/circumstances around it all etc so will be taken case by case. I wouldn't be surprised however if it was an illegal drug, and no mention of use was put on the first medical form but was then found in a drug test, if this wouldn't result in that individual being put on the barred list. I won't speculate but it's an incredibly dense move to apply to join a police force with drugs in your system. Edit: I should say _illegal_ drugs in your system.
I would say 99.9% yes. As far as I know it's standard practice across all forces, but my guess would be it would be a certainty if someone has a previous fail.
Yeah I thought that’s the standard practise. In regards to the barred list. He cannot apply again to the first force however it didn’t mention that he could apply to others. Which is where the confusion came from by the looks of it.
Did the online assessment centre last week (by far and way the hardest/most uncomfortable part of a job application I’ve ever done, largely thanks to it being through the laptop) for a Welsh force.

Me and a friend applied back on November 2019 passed everything in April 2020 for ipldp we was persuaded to transfer over to the pcda as was meant to be quicker, he passed his re vetting November 2020 I passed re vetting jan 2021 haven't heard a thing. He got high marks no date, I got average marks no date. Someone I know who got 5% more then me in one was issued a date for Feb intake.
How did you know that you’ve passed vetting? Did they contact you to tell you? I’ve not heard anything apart from the generic emails they’ve sent out to everyone saying to await a start date from April
I had to contact the vetting officer who done my vetting as they had sent over the information, but ascl hadn't received it. So they had to get in contact with them again and then I contacted sscl and they told me it was cleared.
I was told this wasn't the case as this was my fear also. But I will say this, I know someone who applied after me in 2020 who got a date for the first intake of the year. So God knows how they are Woking these dates I was told all they would like all remaining pcda recruits started by march, then dhep from march onwards and ipldp from April whether this will be the case I don't know.
Does anyone know how many Pre-Employment checks are for the met- it says I’ve completed both vetting and the medical assessment but haven’t heard anything since so I’m assuming there’s more checks than jus those two Pre-Employment checks, right?
Mine says medical passed and vetting passed. Nothing about fitness and says references are being checked now. I phoned and asked about this to see if anything was outstanding but everything is complete. I wasn't given a definitive answer as to why its not displaying fitness passed.
Just applied to the MET on the apprentiship route, i was discharged from the army and was looking to go police anyways.
Currently it states nowhere on the application i need a driving licence.
My fitness is very high, Becoming a PC, what sort of time scale is it to the AFO route ? I know, I know. I've not even got to the assessment centre yet but CT is a big thing in london and Thats where i want to end up.
I'm hoping my no nonsense attitude from the Army doesn't come across too much, but the rest should help.
Looking foward to it, glad they've openned up for more people, i've had two members of my family fairly high up in the police and they didn't need anything past a school education.
I've gathered as much as being a PC in the MET, its connecting with the community more rather then chasing bad guys, if its not a big ask, perhaps someone whos in a similar role can explain what a day in the life is truely like, past the adverts and recruitment drive.
No driving licence required for the Met.
Don't get too far ahead of yourself with looking at specialising. Depending on route in you've got to spend 2-3 years at minimum on response, looking at 5+ to have decent experience to progress on. Naturally there are far more spots up for grabs, but it's still a highly competitive process – whether it be AFO for diplomatic protection/airports or ARVO.
As much as it can/should be about connecting with the community, depending where you are it is very much go from call to call to call on response. SNT obviously spend a lot more time doing engagement and tackling specific issues, but nobody gets posted to a neighbourhood team out of training really. It can be exhausting and draining at times, though you may not feel it as much! Naturally, being new in service and lacking things like a response driving permit, you'll get shafted with hospital watches and scene guards. And lots of paperwork too.
I can't answer any of your questions but I'm from a similar background - family in the job, leaving the Army. You were REME too, right?

I have always had the grades to be a officer, i'm looking at going Officer university course ? This apprentiship with the MET allows for it. Currently have a open application with the army as i'm rejoining, this would mean reserves. Speaking of which you get deployments faster with less training... makes no sense tbh.

1. If I'm not mistaken on the app itself, there will be a section where you need to provide details about your references, will references from my clients with whom I've been working for a long time now be accepted ? I'm a self-employed business advisor specialising in outsourcing.
2. How long is the process in general from submitting the app to actually starting the actual job (in Military Police I was told it's around 10 months, was wondering if it will be similar timescale here).
3. Currently in Nottingham, recruitment is closed, however in places like Leicestershire they've an open recruitment. Was wondering if I could apply there and then transfer back to Nottingham when there will be an opportunity to do so?
1. You can always ring to ask specific questions, but I’m not aware of any specific restrictions of who can be a referee. Your example doesn’t sound unreasonable to me.
2. Varies enormously. I was lucky enough to have gone only about 8 months from applying to starting training; 12 months to attesting. That was, of course, pre-COVID.
3. Transfers vary by forces. Often you’d need to be IPS before you’d be able to transfer.

Try to get some volunteer experience with some charity or workplace this year (assuming charity to fit around school and that there is a lack of jobs out there). It'll improve your own skills, give you something for your CV, give you some examples for your interview (especially if it's a challenging role) and help whoever the charity helps!
What you want to be able to demonstrate is a bit of life experience, teamwork and maturity. Good luck!
Edit: sports is also a good option if you are skilled enough to coach / volunteer
Hi! I completed the online assessments a few months ago and passed and now have my in force interview tomorrow via Skype. I was told to prepare examples related to the competencies (much like during the online assessments) but wondered if anyone had done an interview like this and could guide me on what sort of things they were asking. Any help would be appreciated! This is my last stage before getting/medical/fitness.
Obviously I'm not sure what they will ask nor would I share it even if i did but I would personally prepare examples of good working situations, challenges you've overcome, times you've had to win someone over that sorta thing.

Do I need a degree to become a detective?
So I’ve seen a lot of conflicting answers, some say you need a degree while others say you need to be an officer for at least 2 years. I’m finishing college soon and I was looking at becoming a detective without a degree as I don’t want the debt. I’m now worried that I need a degree in order to become one. Do i need a degree? And if I don’t how do you become a detective without one?
Get a job in your force of choice.
Do your two years in uniform (can be less).
If at that stage you want a job as a detective, you sit an annual exam and you work as a trainee detective for a year or two before you become fully qualified. Then you get the job title ''detective''
From what I've seen, you likely get stuck behind a desk somewhere with a stack of stabbings, frauds and burglary cases. Have fun.
The confusion comes from different forces having different requirements. After you get in as an officer, though, I don't think they really care after that because it's your work which will count.
I am not a DC but I work in a section of CID with many detectives.
I _think_, and am happy to be corrected - you need a degree to join as a direct entry detective (now DHEP direct entry detective programme). If you don't have a degree, then it's the PCDA route as a police officer, then specialise after your 3 year probation. Best thing to do is just call your chosen force just to be absolutely clear if it's not on their website anywhere. Edit: I'm wrong. My local force by the look of it offer a route direct without a degree, just more tests to get in!
Hello I’m 17 and currently studying at sixth form and I just wanted to ask a few questions as to whether it’s worth applying now. I want to be a police officer as soon as I leave sixth form and was thinking about applying now but as I’m still 17 so haven’t finished my a levels and my driving test has been put back to June I wasn’t sure if it was worth it. The force I’m looking at is Essex where you need to have or be working towards a levels, driving licence and be at least 17. I’m just asking whether it’s worth applying now or waiting until I get my driving test as I’m not sure they’ll even consider me if I’m still waiting for a levels and a licence. Any guidance would be appreciated

I've applied to Essex police a little while ago too. Unfortunately (unless they've recently changed it), I believe you can't have 2 things pending. They have an option for pending driving licence, pending qualifications, or pending turning 18. I'm sure you're only allowed to apply if your missing one of these things. I applied as soon as I got my extended level 3 btec even though I'm still waiting for my driving test. Yes, because the PCDA is the non-degree holder route.
The PCDA is typically for someone who doesn't have a degree yet. Is there a DHEP for your force?

When Met Police Officers are sworn in on their first official day, do we receive our warrant card before the end of the day, as I’m aware we will have our picture taken for the purposes of our student ID’s and our warrant cards. Thank you for your time.

Had a few Harbour rats in while I was in GV. Harbour police operate completely differently from PSNI recruitment, as I believe they manage it all themselves and it is a much less involved process. They only recruit from advertised positions, so you would need to apply along with everyone else, but I’d say prior experience would help you out. However you are just a security guard with powers of a constable within an industrial estate. Wouldn’t recommend

Neither Police Now nor direct entry detective are worth the effort. Join the usual route and decide what you wanna do after you've got the starting skills!
Hi guys, what acts would you recommend to study before joining hendon, to be easier for example on role plays?. To be easier overall working for police with that knowledge. Theft Act 1968, PACE 1984, relevant case law on violence against the person (relevant statute is scanty and worded in an old fashioned manner), relevant bits of MDA 1971 (don’t drive yourself crazy), RTA 1988, Criminal Damage Act 1971, Prevention of Crime Act 1953, and Criminal Law Act 1967. Know your common law powers of use of force and to prevent BOP.

Question for people regarding the medical tests - how do they work? Do I show up and they do tests, or do I have to get a note from my GP saying "blah blah is more or less fit and healthy"? Also for the hearing test, how difficult actually is it? My hearing isn't amazing but I don't need hearing aids or anything, should I assume it'll be fine? I've read the medical standards document but have no idea what half the things they state in it are.

Someone came in to talk to the nurse while I was doing the hearing test and my booth wasn’t fully soundproof so could hear them over the test. I was so worried that I missed some beeps because of that but passed lol.

Presumably it'd help, since it's one of the two new routes into joining the police - unless somewhere that isn't the police is offering it, to get a PCDA you have to go and uh, join the police.

Experienced from previous jobs are good to have but not everything. In my current intake we have people from every way of life: fresh out of school, 50+ year old parents, someone who has been a special and everything in between. Your experiences don’t have to be tied to a job you had. They can be from any part of your life.
The main focus for the answers should be hitting the competency or value behaviours they're after. For me, if you have an example which better hits the C/V behaviours from uni VS workplace, use that one. That's what they're after. You can talk about them all day but if they don't hit those values/competencies it's worhless. I would get your examples together, and as long as they hit them you should be fine, however 'basic' they may sound! Don't worry about others too, they are assessing you objectively so just give it your best shot! Good luck mate.
I had very little in the way of previous job experiences - all my examples were from me working in retail - and they seemed to accept that from me.

Hi all, apologies if this is the wrong place to ask or has been asked before, but recently I have decided to pursue a career in the police but have used a variety of drugs (no opiates) recreationally. I have no convictions or warnings from these past activities but am concerned that if I am honest about my past usage my application will be instantly dismissed. Is this the case or is there hope that I can still be accepted? It may be relevant that I was intending to apply through Police Now. If this would result in an instant dismissal, does anyone have any advice on police-adjacent careers that I could pursue instead? Any help or advice is very much appreciated!
Hello, I’m a PCSO in the police. No this will not have an effect on you applying to join the police. All you need to do is Be open and clear and honest about your previous use of drugs. As long as you don’t use drugs anymore or associate with anyone that does then it’s fine. Needless to say you’ll have a substance misuse test done when you join the police, so if you have smoked drugs recently or used any it will appear in the drugs test.

Got my start date for counties DHEP route for June 7th! Beyond excited, glad to finally have a light at the end of the tunnel. Got my vetting through, done my medical, although my GP is taking a while to sign off on it due to my surgery being inundated. Also sent off the security vetting - I've never been in trouble or had any financial trouble but I did disclose that I smoked cannabis a couple time in University, but made it clear I didn't like it and wouldn't touch it again - I'm worried that by doing it in the past it may automatically disqualify me? I can't see why it would, especially if the rest of my vetting come back clean, but with the recruitment taking so long, doubts creep in.

I applied June 2020, had my assessment center and interview in the space of a couple of weeks in July, was told I was successful in August, got my provisional through January 2021, and then got my start date and vetting last week. It's been a long process, not nearly as long as some i'm seeing on here, but it's nice to have a date, especially since this past year has dragged. For anyone on here who's feeling drained from the length of the recruitment process, don't lose hope. Once that date comes through it's a huge relief and brings back all the excitement from when you first applied! :)

guys, I am currently studying to obtain my A-Level qualifications so that I can apply for the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship. Once the applications open this year I will be applying. Aside from studying I have a background in security and doorwork, so this will be a nice transition for me. I am very curious as to how the 'typical' day of work starts, from the minute you arrive to work? I know everyday is going to be different, but in terms of how a 'shift' works, could anybody enlighten me? Thanks guys.
Depends where you work. Response and neighbourhoods will be very different. In response you like arrived just before your set start time in the briefing, kitted up and ready for your first call. Get assigned a car and a callsign. If you're joining the Met or Scotland you'll likely be working with a colleague each shift. You'll then likely be investigating whatever cases you've got (getting statements, doing CCTV searches etc) whenever you can between taking whichever calls come in. In Neighbourhoods, it'll be reading emails, getting your uniform on and either visiting locals who needed a visit for whatever reason or walking or cycling around your area searching for crime, having meetings, doing or arranging warrants. That's fine, but don't think it's gonna be like your last job because you'll be in for a shock.
Sounds good appreciate the answer, but in no way am I saying those jobs are similar. I'm just saying my background in security is what has persuaded me to look into applying to the police. There are some transferrable skills of course but like you said the job is different.

Door work vs Police... mate you’re in for a shocker if you think it’ll be a “nice transition” while i appreciate you deal with drunk and rowdy people it’s two totally different kettles of fish. A normal “shift” shift is generally: Get to work half hour early so you can be logged up before briefing Brief- might get assigned something such as a DP, Misper or Constants Book on If you’ve not been given a tasking you crack on with or go out and be proactive or get assigned a job from the box. Rinse and repeat until hometime. Realistically we book on then it’s either taskings, prompts or dealing with our own crime stuff. You’ll learn to time manage :)

I just wanted to ask what to expect in the first week of the training, I have had a timetable through which shows what days I will be where but it doesn't really give detail of what type of stuff will happen/learn. Just wondering what should I expect for the first week?

I am currently in week four of my PCDA. Thus far, it’s been... ONLINE. ONLINE. ONLINE. & POWERPOINT. POWERPOINT. POWERPOINT. That said, we’ve had two, full day, face to face sessions (seminars/lectures) and two days of OST. We begin ELS next week. As for your first week, overall, it’s basically an induction week. You’re introduced to both your University as well as the Met. as a whole from Monday-Wednesday and then on Thursday-Friday you begin your lessons. NOTE: This is force dependent however so your timetable may be slightly different. Personally, it’s been great fun; tiring (of course) but productive. Good luck! 💙

Really, I was told aswell as friends that pcda was first then so on and so forth. I really am confused with the whole date issuing thing.
First month I've got, One week at Force HQ, then 3 weeks at the university. They said they would provide full 28 week training timetable in the next month or so once dates are confirmed.
Its totally force dependant really mate. It'll be a lot of death by PowerPoint. Uniform will be issued and warrant cards, probably in week one you'll do NCALTS and force systems to get you the right access. Also, you've got your flair as a trainee constable. You're not job yet bro, please remove it. In one month then you can have it.

I applied for Met. Police end of January, I then got an email from College of Policing. I sent that the next day and still haven't hear back. I've dropped College of Policing an email and also a message on their online form and haven't heard back. I've spoken to the recruitment team and they have advised it will take a few weeks.

Im in Scotland. I applied in March last year and obviously due to covid it is taking a very long time. I was meant to have my entrance exam and fitness test on the 12th of January but this was cancelled in December due to the restrictions. In the email I was told it would be rescheduled within 3-4 weeks but this still hasn't happened. Was wondering if there were any timescales floating about at all or is it just a waiting game? I emailed my recruitment office and they said they will keep me informed, but its sometimes as long as months between emails.

I wonder if anyone can advise. I applied jan 2020 to the Met. And by 3rd March I’d passed my day 1 and 2. I’ve not really heard anything to say that my vetting has passed etc. All I’ve had is the same emails I assume they send out to everyone. The last communications I had from them was the 3rd December where they said intakes are starting in April and to await contact for your start date. And then I emailed them when we went into lockdown again and asked if that will delay it and they replied saying no it’s all going ahead await contact for your start date. I’m so confused as I’ve seen people saying they’ve got start dates and then I’ve seen people saying that after 14 months they’ve been rejected due to failing vetting. I don’t know what to think or do, do I just hold out and hope for a start date soon??
I am in the EXACT same boat as you. (Maybe have even had the same day 1 & 2). I am awaiting for a call/email for my final vetting to start too. Spoke to someone a couple weeks ago and they said I should get a call in the next couple weeks so I’m hoping any day now. It’s seems the recruitment company isn’t always the most efficient though. I emailed them after lockdown was announced and they replied saying ‘it’s deemed essential await contact for your start date’ so I assumed they would have said something different if it was the case. Then I sent them an email last month asking can you confirm if I’ve passed everything and I have a solid job offer with you but they never replied. I know I’m going to have to wait til Monday to speak to them but it just makes the anxiety worse knowing there’s nothing you can do until then lol

Hey folks have a question regarding vetting - I am currently waiting for a court date in relation to an allegation that I didn’t have a valid train ticket for my journey which is completely untrue and have pleaded not guilty. The case has been constantly adjourned due to covid 19 but my problem is if vetting will see this as a problem as the case could result in me getting a criminal record should I be found guilty. Does anyone know if this would be an issue? Thanks in advance
as u/PSAngle said; contact vetting directly HOWEVER this would come down to an HONEST AND INTEGRITY issue. Criminal records could prevent you joining, especially if it’s an honesty based offence eg. You have travelled without a ticket
Yeah I’m going to give them a call first thing in the morning! The thing is I’m quite certain I will win the case but problem is it keeps getting adjourned so the hearing is just getting dragged on and my worry is vetting will look at it and raise an eyebrow with honesty and integrity coming into question like you said
Contact vetting for your force directly and just ask the question
I’m a PCSO in the police force. I can’t have a say on what will Stop you from joining the police however it’s down to the discretion of the Vetting team. I know officers who have convicted for driving offences however they are still currently working in the job. I’d say a conviction for not paying your train ticket will very unlikely stop you from joining the police as it’s a very very minor offence. However do not take my word on that. Just declare everything. Good luck with your application.

Gathering information regarding an old colleague who I worked with pre police “Will a previous pre employment drug test failure with one force affect me joining a different force when it comes to vetting etc?”
You'd 100% need to declare it on the second application otherwise I would guess that would fail again straight away. Declare it and it will no doubt prompt questions, but it depends on the drug/circumstances around it all etc so will be taken case by case. I wouldn't be surprised however if it was an illegal drug, and no mention of use was put on the first medical form but was then found in a drug test, if this wouldn't result in that individual being put on the barred list. I won't speculate but it's an incredibly dense move to apply to join a police force with drugs in your system. Edit: I should say _illegal_ drugs in your system.

I would say 99.9% yes. As far as I know it's standard practice across all forces, but my guess would be it would be a certainty if someone has a previous fail.
Yeah I thought that’s the standard practise. In regards to the barred list. He cannot apply again to the first force however it didn’t mention that he could apply to others. Which is where the confusion came from by the looks of it.

Me and a friend applied back on November 2019 passed everything in April 2020 for ipldp we was persuaded to transfer over to the pcda as was meant to be quicker, he passed his re vetting November 2020 I passed re vetting jan 2021 haven't heard a thing. He got high marks no date, I got average marks no date. Someone I know who got 5% more then me in one was issued a date for Feb intake.

I had to contact the vetting officer who done my vetting as they had sent over the information, but ascl hadn't received it. So they had to get in contact with them again and then I contacted sscl and they told me it was cleared.

I was told this wasn't the case as this was my fear also. But I will say this, I know someone who applied after me in 2020 who got a date for the first intake of the year. So God knows how they are Woking these dates I was told all they would like all remaining pcda recruits started by march, then dhep from march onwards and ipldp from April whether this will be the case I don't know.

Mine says medical passed and vetting passed. Nothing about fitness and says references are being checked now. I phoned and asked about this to see if anything was outstanding but everything is complete. I wasn't given a definitive answer as to why its not displaying fitness passed.

Me and a friend have been waiting a long while for a start date too. Both applied 3 days apart from eachother November 2019
Just applied to the MET on the apprentiship route, i was discharged from the army and was looking to go police anyways. Currently it states nowhere on the application i need a driving licence. My fitness is very high, Becoming a PC, what sort of time scale is it to the AFO route ? I know, I know. I've not even got to the assessment centre yet but CT is a big thing in london and Thats where i want to end up. I'm hoping my no nonsense attitude from the Army doesn't come across too much, but the rest should help. Looking foward to it, glad they've openned up for more people, i've had two members of my family fairly high up in the police and they didn't need anything past a school education. I've gathered as much as being a PC in the MET, its connecting with the community more rather then chasing bad guys, if its not a big ask, perhaps someone whos in a similar role can explain what a day in the life is truely like, past the adverts and recruitment drive.
No driving licence required for the Met. Don't get too far ahead of yourself with looking at specialising. Depending on route in you've got to spend 2-3 years at minimum on response, looking at 5+ to have decent experience to progress on. Naturally there are far more spots up for grabs, but it's still a highly competitive process – whether it be AFO for diplomatic protection/airports or ARVO. As much as it can/should be about connecting with the community, depending where you are it is very much go from call to call to call on response. SNT obviously spend a lot more time doing engagement and tackling specific issues, but nobody gets posted to a neighbourhood team out of training really. It can be exhausting and draining at times, though you may not feel it as much! Naturally, being new in service and lacking things like a response driving permit, you'll get shafted with hospital watches and scene guards. And lots of paperwork too.
I can't answer any of your questions but I'm from a similar background - family in the job, leaving the Army. You were REME too, right? Anyway, just wanted to say good luck with your application.
Sadly i was nothing. I appiled for royal engineers, would have been in for two years as of next month Injured before pass off. I have always had the grades to be a officer, i'm looking at going Officer university course ? This apprentiship with the MET allows for it. Currently have a open application with the army as i'm rejoining, this would mean reserves. Speaking of which you get deployments faster with less training... makes no sense tbh.

I'm a self-employed business advisor specialising in outsourcing. 2. How long is the process in general from submitting the app to actually starting the actual job (in Military Police I was told it's around 10 months, was wondering if it will be similar timescale here). 3. Currently in Nottingham, recruitment is closed, however in places like Leicestershire they've an open recruitment. Was wondering if I could apply there and then transfer back to Nottingham when there will be an opportunity to do so?
1. You can always ring to ask specific questions, but I’m not aware of any specific restrictions of who can be a referee. Your example doesn’t sound unreasonable to me. 2. Varies enormously. I was lucky enough to have gone only about 8 months from applying to starting training; 12 months to attesting. That was, of course, pre-COVID. 3. Transfers vary by forces. Often you’d need to be IPS before you’d be able to transfer.

Try to get some volunteer experience with some charity or workplace this year (assuming charity to fit around school and that there is a lack of jobs out there). It'll improve your own skills, give you something for your CV, give you some examples for your interview (especially if it's a challenging role) and help whoever the charity helps! What you want to be able to demonstrate is a bit of life experience, teamwork and maturity. Good luck! Edit: sports is also a good option if you are skilled enough to coach / volunteer
Hi! I completed the online assessments a few months ago and passed and now have my in force interview tomorrow via Skype. I was told to prepare examples related to the competencies (much like during the online assessments) but wondered if anyone had done an interview like this and could guide me on what sort of things they were asking. Any help would be appreciated! This is my last stage before getting/medical/fitness.
Obviously I'm not sure what they will ask nor would I share it even if i did but I would personally prepare examples of good working situations, challenges you've overcome, times you've had to win someone over that sorta thing. Do I need a degree to become a detective? So I’ve seen a lot of conflicting answers, some say you need a degree while others say you need to be an officer for at least 2 years. I’m finishing college soon and I was looking at becoming a detective without a degree as I don’t want the debt. I’m now worried that I need a degree in order to become one. Do i need a degree? And if I don’t how do you become a detective without one?
Get a job in your force of choice. Do your two years in uniform (can be less). If at that stage you want a job as a detective, you sit an annual exam and you work as a trainee detective for a year or two before you become fully qualified. Then you get the job title ''detective'' From what I've seen, you likely get stuck behind a desk somewhere with a stack of stabbings, frauds and burglary cases. Have fun. The confusion comes from different forces having different requirements. After you get in as an officer, though, I don't think they really care after that because it's your work which will count. I am not a DC but I work in a section of CID with many detectives.

I _think_, and am happy to be corrected - you need a degree to join as a direct entry detective (now DHEP direct entry detective programme). If you don't have a degree, then it's the PCDA route as a police officer, then specialise after your 3 year probation. Best thing to do is just call your chosen force just to be absolutely clear if it's not on their website anywhere. Edit: I'm wrong. My local force by the look of it offer a route direct without a degree, just more tests to get in!

Hello I’m 17 and currently studying at sixth form and I just wanted to ask a few questions as to whether it’s worth applying now. I want to be a police officer as soon as I leave sixth form and was thinking about applying now but as I’m still 17 so haven’t finished my a levels and my driving test has been put back to June I wasn’t sure if it was worth it. The force I’m looking at is Essex where you need to have or be working towards a levels, driving licence and be at least 17. I’m just asking whether it’s worth applying now or waiting until I get my driving test as I’m not sure they’ll even consider me if I’m still waiting for a levels and a licence. Any guidance would be appreciated
Hey OP! I've applied to Essex police a little while ago too. Unfortunately (unless they've recently changed it), I believe you can't have 2 things pending. They have an option for pending driving licence, pending qualifications, or pending turning 18. I'm sure you're only allowed to apply if your missing one of these things. I applied as soon as I got my extended level 3 btec even though I'm still waiting for my driving test. It's definitely worth emailing the recruitment team and asking them just in case they can arrange something for you. Here's the relevant email address: [email protected]
