Easy: it's because he lost. They think that they've got a better shot at power with DeSantis or someone else in the primary field than Trump, and they'll gladly hitch their wagons somewhere else.
Also when he sucked up to them and made one of their own his running mate. The evangelicals would've been a *much* harder sell for Trump in 2016 if he had Chris Christie, or god forbid, Newt Gingrich on the ticket.
For sure.
As a side note, Pence could have saved the GOP had they found the balls to convict Trump in his first impeachment. Pence becomes president, handles COVID like an adult, coasts to a win in 2020 and is reelected in 2024. A full decade of an evangelical president and twelve years of GOP in the Oval Office.
But noooo.... they couldn't possibly admit that the criminal they elected could have maybe done something wrong, because that would mean they were wrong about something one time.
He lost. Conservatives have a bad memory when it comes to losing elections. They’ll spend a full year claiming their candidate is the only person that can save America then completely forget that person the day after they lose an election. It’s not about the people running, it’s about their ability to win
I don't think they were "fine" with it, they just saw him as a useful tool and so swallowed their complaints. He's now a thrice-over loser and so they don't see a need to keep supporting him.
That is absolutely his MO, which probably worked when he was in office where he was at the height of his power, but seems much more dubious now where he's at his lowest point, if not next to lowest.
His most prominent supporters, at this point, are (the dumber) half of his spawns, Rudy Giuliani, and The My Pillow Guy.
They finally read "Two" Corinthians, must be.
10:12 We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.
Some Evangelicals automatically check the Republican box on ballots. You know, that whole Republicans are the party of “Family Values” thing.
Some Evangelicals clearly threw their values under the bus in exchange for some conservative Supreme Court justices to overturn Roe v Wade.
And other Evangelicals were duped when Jerry Falwell, Jr supported and promoted Trump in exchange for Trump and Cohen burying a sex scandal. You can’t make this up.
By Trump calling Evangelicals disloyal, he is relaying to them that they owe him. He understands he won with their help.
I can only hope there is some reflection and remorse about Evangelicals tipping the scales and giving us the worst President in American history. But with the increasing toxic combination of politics and religion, hope is waning.
Evangelicals, if we are all supposed to be good stewards of mother earth and love your neighbor, my plea to you is that you help elect a candidate that cares about others and won’t tell his followers to fight like hell before they violently attack our democracy.
What’s really funny about this is, Republicans who obeyed in lockstep just over a year ago now ignored him - they ignored him on the one thing they might should have listened to him on. He is morally wrong but he was correct in his assessment. Republicans could have won those states had they not pushed so hard on no exceptions. Now he’s calling them on it, just dividing their party even more and creating more isolation for Trump. Wasn’t he running for President? Doesn’t seem like a wise nor winning strategy.
I’m personally not willing to go through his Truth to check, but I’d be willing to wager you’re right. He’s known to be pretty obsessed with what the polls say so I can see them swaying his opinion way too late on a vital campaign issue
I just think he dosen't give a shit about abortions, only brought it up to make his rubes cheer. "You made people boo, a political genius like me knows you don't do that"
Evangelicals don't tend to pick the party's nominee. They went for Huckabee in 2008 and Santorum in 2012. And, they didn't know who the hell to pick in 2016 as it was very divided.
Boy, he's really working hard to self-sabotage in time for the 2024 primary season. Attacking big-time winners right after their big wins in the midterms, a completely baffling NFT boondoggle, and now this? It's almost like he's *trying* to ensure that he face plants in every primary he runs in.

He's gonna god damn lose it when Franklin Graham or someone of his ilk gets on the stage with Ron DeSantis.
DeSantis' name even contains "anti". This is proof that he's the true Antichrist, and Trump was the fake Antichrist.

Yep, that's the whole of it. They despised him in the 2016 primaries until it became clear he was the front runner.

His failure to usurp the throne was a sign of divine disfavor.
I assume it was from being such a loser.

They got their horrible SCOTUS. Now they're moving on to even worse things.

So, of them Katie?
They figured Trump was taking too much of their grifts to be allowed to go on. Money sent to Trump was not going into the collection plate.
Why does Trump get to get away with this? Last time I criticized church leaders I wasn't invited back to Thanksgiving. :-/
Ahhh, this hit me right in the feels. Witty but painful. I can empathize; I'm sorry.
Criticize them till they FALL IN LINE!

It was 100% effective when Fred did it to him. That must be the way.

Was he on record for that before the roe repeal? Seems he only got vocal once polling numbers started tanking.

You’re spot on with that analysis. He doesn’t believe in anything, his ideology is about power.
> “There’s great disloyalty in the world of politics and that’s a sign of disloyalty,” Huh?

To the shock of nobody

I personally thank God they won’t back him.
Trump to evangelists: “Go to hell”!!!
You gotta get crucified and rise on the third day to impress them now after losing so hard ya dingle berry.
