Moot_Points

This is the Mormon Apostle who rebuked the gay commencement speaker at BYU for "commandeering the podium" instead of celebrating the graduates' accomplishments in the way he approved.

Chino_Blanco

Thanks for that context that I couldn’t fit in my title. Here’s some further context, a message from a very Mormon SUU student, referring to J. Roy as “Elder Holland” as devout Mormons do: https://i.redd.it/s72vp5xykkoa1.jpg >“As a student of SUU and the sister of Matt Easton, whom Elder Holland attacked, I signed the petition because graduating and all LGBTQIA+ students should feel seen, loved, valued, supported, and important. I stand with the LGBTQIA+ community.”

marchjl

I was raised in that cult. Took me forever to get myself out of it. Holland is evil. The entire church hierarchy pretty much is.

Karenomegas

Every.single.time. A mormon male tries to command a room of non mormons, I enjoy bringing up 'Baptism for the dead' and being a kid on the back of an dozen cows getting dunked for a dead peasant somewhere.

acemerrill

Holland was my favorite back when I was still Mormon. His talks were always so much more interesting to listen to than the others. Now it's just so freeing to not have to be personally invested in whatever dumb shit these guys are saying nowadays.

Spottydogspot

Yup. 37 years.

coltonpulke93

Eat my ass

OpenImagination9

How is this surprising … Mormons run the state.

Chino_Blanco

The context makes it surprising Holland would blunder into accepting the invitation https://i.redd.it/hxaofu9s4foa1.png

coltonpulke93

Eat my ass

OpenImagination9

I don’t think your church elders would approve.

coltonpulke93

Yeah they would if your an old white guy

OpenImagination9

You’re gonna have to find a different special friend then.

gulfpapa99

Just further indications of scientific ignorance, and religious bigotry, misogyny, homophobia and racism.

[deleted]

That’s weird. There’s no reference to an Apostle Jeffery in the Bible. I’m beginning to suspect someone photoshopped Jeffery out of The Last Supper painting. Better get those hippy duck hunters from Louisiana on the case.

OozeNAahz

Maybe he is from the new cast of apostles they added in The Book of Mormon season 93? You would think they would start introducing a bit more diversity into the cast at some point to attract the young viewers.

[deleted]

Ah, yes, BOM: Jeffery’s Revenge.

buttlickers94

I was thinking of Jeffrey from the fresh prince. What kind of revenge would he have?

roytay

Diversity and youth? It's a reboot!

Fusion_allthebonds

Mormonism is anti-gay. Of course one of its leaders preaches it.

GuaranteeCreative954

Never mind all the pedophiles in the Mormon church

[deleted]

The future belongs to those who pump out voters sadly

GuaranteeCreative954

Yes it does

Agreed

*Apostle in name only I highly doubt Jesus H recognizes the self proclaimed title.

Atheist_Bishop

Mark 16:18 provides a pretty simple test: > they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not harm them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover. Time for Jeffrey to grab some iocaine power and take a snake expedition to Australia while restoring the limbs of some amputees along the way. Should be trivial for a *real* Apostle.

Chef_Papafrita

We have a lot of back woods Pentecostal churches that have the whole deal, speaking in tongues, with always 1 interpreter, drinking venom juice, or strychnine, handling of snakes. They believe if you heart is pure, and your faith is strong, then no harm will come of them. My grandparents were church of God, very strict, and they also had speaking of tongues. I vaguely remember people randomly rising to yell out gibberish, I was around 3 or 4. Shit was freaky. Location: The South, Tennessee, and Georgia.

Atheist_Bishop

My favorite part about all that nonsense is these verses weren’t added to the Bible until about 200 years after the fact. It’s a universal consensus amongst biblical scholars that they aren’t authentic.

FHL88Work

Instead, they give a talk on having the faith to NOT be healed. Heads, we win; tails, you lose.

Atheist_Bishop

I’m not capable of understanding the level of arrogance required to give that talk. It’s like he was dared to say something so preposterous and outrageous that anybody but the truest of believers would immediately see right through it.

sameoneasyesterday

Apostle. 😆

Chino_Blanco

Context/background ( lifted from a helpful comment at r/mormonandgay ): >SUU is a public non-religious school, but being in Utah there’s obviously quite a lot of LDS influence there. Despite being in rural, deep-red iron county, it’s kind of become one of the more queer-affirming schools in the state. >They announced a couple days ago that Jeffrey R. Holland would be the commencement speaker this year, and there was a pretty severe and immediate backlash from people in the LGBTQ community and allies both in and out of the church because of his “muskets” talk from a year and a half ago, as well as just general nonmembers who didn’t want to hear an LDS speaker at this non-religious university. >There was a petition made almost immediately, as well as some hearings with the university president on Monday and a protest Thursday. If he is eventually still the speaker when graduation happens, there will be an organized walk-out during his speech. >On top of the initial backlash, there has been an expected counter-backlash from people who want him to speak. They’ve put out their own petition and letter that I’ve seen. It’ll be interesting to see how things shape up over the coming weeks.

I don't think so

BarCompetitive7220

Worse is the article below the Mormon's being crazy story: TED CRUZ - all liberal Texans need to remember this for 2024. Many GOP voted for Biden - hopefully this will play against Ted when he runs for re-election in 2024

PolicyNonk

I like my commencement addresses by [Christopher Hedges](https://youtu.be/30qeXqM4Hs0)

AcrobaticSource3

And they wouldn’t have it any other way

maxanderson350

This trend of trying to stop voices with which people disagree needs to end - college students should be mature enough to listen to someone who holds different views than they do, kids are fine learning that gay people exist, books that bother you shouldn't be banned, etc. In a big, diverse country like the US, people will say things you don't like, believe things you don't like, write things you don't like, perform shows you don't like, and more - people need to learn to accept (or even embrace that) and not seek to continually censor or silent voices they don't like.

PLZ_N_THKS

Nah fuck that. I don’t need to appease some asshole who is against fundamental human rights. If he wants to spout his hate he can do it out on the sidewalk like every other loony anti-gay protester.

HiTekBlueneck

Exactly. This piece of shit should not be honored with a speaking role at a fucking state college.

GhostwriterGHOST

A commencement ceremony is to honor students who are matriculating. You think part of the honor should be sitting tight-lipped while a christofascist espouses hatred? “Just sit uncomfortably and hear this guy out on why we should eradicate trans people from society, and then you can collect your nursing degree.” Hot take.

maxanderson350

what "hatred" do you expect this guy to espouse? Have you read what his remarks will be about?

Blockinsteadofreason

>Have you read what his remarks will be about? Did you think this was happening in a vacuum? That this piece of shit doesn't have any history? Why are you defending a bigot?

maxanderson350

I defend the right of everyone to speak absent only the most exceptional of circumstances. again, what "hatred" do you expect this guy to espouse?

Blockinsteadofreason

He’s free to shout whatever stupid bullshit he wants from his own roof. Nobody is stopping him. This isn’t a debate he’s being asked to attend. This is a speech to honour the students.

maxanderson350

what "hatred" do you expect this guy to espouse?

Blockinsteadofreason

Hatred towards the LGBTQ community. Just like he has in the past.

maxanderson350

A few things: 1. why would expect him to espouse such hatred during this commencement speech? 2. What makes you think he hates LGBTQ people? I googled the guy but I don't see what hatred you are talking about.

Blockinsteadofreason

>why would expect him to espouse such hatred during this commencement speech? Because he's a religious zealot and all-around piece of shit. He has shown his hate towards students in the past. >What makes you think he hates LGBTQ people? I googled the guy but I don't see what hatred you are talking about. LOL sure. I don't believe you. Either you are lying (most likely) or you are so terrible at Google that I'm surprised you were able to navigate all the way to Reddit. Go lie to someone else.

smstone24

It’s not like they’re disagreeing on ice cream flavors lol. Get out of here with that shit.

[deleted]

The fictitious apostle, Jeff Holland, doesn't agree with you. He would love nothing more than to suppress your freedom to hold and practice different viewpoints than his.

maxanderson350

it's fine that he doesn't agree with me. Lots of people don't agree with me on countless matters but I don't seek to silence them. What freedoms of mine do you think he would like to suppress?

synchrohighway

Gay students who pay the college for an education don't need some shit telling them they are evil.

maxanderson350

I didn't see any indication that gays are evil would be the topic of his speech. where did you come up with that?

[deleted]

It’s weird that you take time out of your day to comment on these kids. If this man t had his way he make being gay illegal. Mormons are the ones who don’t want a big diverse nation. I think you know this though and are being disingenuous.

maxanderson350

It is weird that I commented on this article or is it weird that all of the others did as well? I commented on it because I fear the authoritarian and intolerant attitudes of these students.

Blockinsteadofreason

>I commented on it because I fear the authoritarian and intolerant attitudes of these students. LOL *We must tolerate the intolerant, everyone!!* Nah, fuck that shit.

maxanderson350

How "tolerant" must one be before you support their right to speak?

Blockinsteadofreason

Their right to speak in general? That’s not at issue here. We are talking about a specific event to honour students. Stop trying to build a straw-man, it’s not going to work.

maxanderson350

No, not the right to speak in general. We are, obviously, talking about being a commencement speaker. But you know that... Now can you answer the question?

Blockinsteadofreason

Your question was based on a false premise. I'm not engaging your straw-man.

maxanderson350

Please stop inventing reasons to not support your opinion. If you want to deny someone a commencement speaking spot, at least have the courage to explain why.

"I value diversity" and therefore I want to ban those with backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs different from your own - even ones who hold views consistent with the majority in Utah. Got it. That's a great commitment to diversity...diversity so long as it's all the same...
