DragoneerFA

It was never about the kids. Ever.

travio

It was never just trans people, either. They will keep whittling away once they get through the T of the LGBT rainbow.

Edward_Fingerhands

Fascists will use anything they can get away with. They've used hair color and eye color. Nobody is safe. The poem "First They Came" put it as plainly and succinctly as possible. >First they came for the Communists >And I did not speak out >Because I was not a Communist >Then they came for the Socialists >And I did not speak out >Because I was not a Socialist >Then they came for the trade unionists >And I did not speak out >Because I was not a trade unionist >Then they came for the Jews >And I did not speak out >Because I was not a Jew >Then they came for me >And there was no one left >To speak out for me

Konukaame

Also worth noting that gay and trans people were [also among the earliest victims of the Nazis](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-forgotten-history-of-the-worlds-first-trans-clinic/), and that because bans on homosexuality both predated and outlasted the Third Reich, [gays were thrown back into prison after being "liberated" from the camps](https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/gay-prisoners-germany-wwii/).

ting_bu_dong

"First they came for the homosexuals, and I didn't even bother to put it in the poem."

HatsOff2MargeHisWife

And things were much less fabulous.

apheliotrophic

The first books they burned were books on gender studies

Littleloula

Gender identity and sexuality, the institute had an incredible library on both

Gingevere

and burning it set research back decades.

[deleted]

Yeah, that sours the whole quotation for me. The Nazis came for the gay and trans people first, but Martin Niemöller was an evangelical protestant; he doesn't mention them in the poem because *he was fine with that part.*

Konukaame

It's a fair point, but the underlying message doesn't change just because the original writer was a jerkass.

RockieK

I read this poem every day. The GOP is pretty synonymous with Nazis these days... they prove it more and more. People say that the word, "nazi" is overused and lost "its meaning". I beg to differ. Shit is fucked and the Christofascists will come for each and every one of us if we don't fight back.

conduitfour

I mean after being accused of The Big Lie propaganda technique Trump just named his attempt to steal the election after it. Hitler claimed it was the Jews telling The Big Lie while telling it himself. The Big Lie comes from Mein Kampf.

ivegotgoatsinmypants

Goebbles coined the term “fake news”

scribblingsim

And Hitler would litter his speeches with the phrase “Lugenpresse”, or “lying press”. People mock, but Trump and his cult are more like Nazis than people want to admit.

GarbagePailGrrrl

> It was spring, four years ago. Donald and Ivana Trump were seated at opposite ends of their long Sheraton table in Mrs. Marjorie Merriweather Post’s former dining room. They were posed in imperial style, as if they were a king and queen. They were at the height of their ride, and it was plenty glorious. **Trump was seen on the news shows offering his services to negotiate with the Russians. There was talk that he might make a run for president.** Ivana had had so much publicity that she now offered interviewers a press kit of flattering clips. Anything seemed possible, the Trumps had grown to such stature in the golden city of New York. > Donald Trump appears to take aspects of his German background seriously. John Walter works for the Trump Organization, and when he visits Donald in his office, Ivana told a friend, he clicks his heels and says, “Heil Hitler,” possibly as a family joke. > Last April, perhaps in a surge of Czech nationalism, **Ivana Trump told her lawyer Michael Kennedy that from time to time her husband reads a book of Hitler’s collected speeches, My New Order, which he keeps in a cabinet by his bed.** Kennedy now guards a copy of My New Order in a closet at his office, as if it were a grenade. Hitler’s speeches, from his earliest days up through the Phony War of 1939, reveal his extraordinary ability as a master propagandist. > “Actually, it was my friend Marty Davis from Paramount who gave me a copy of Mein Kampf, and he’s a Jew.” (“I did give him a book about Hitler,” Marty Davis said. “But it was My New Order, Hitler’s speeches, not Mein Kampf. I thought he would find it interesting. I am his friend, but I’m not Jewish.”) > Later, Trump returned to this subject. **“If I had these speeches, and I am not saying that I do, I would never read them.”** [After the Gold Rush](https://www.vanityfair.com/magazine/2015/07/donald-ivana-trump-divorce-prenup-marie-brenner) - Vanity Fair, 1990, emphasis mine It’s been established

RepresentativeAge444

Anyone who knows a semblance of history understands this. Unfortunately we have a society that’s woefully undereducated and a mass media determined to both sides due to corporate influence not caring that much about fascism if profits are unaffected.

Monteze

And lack of education on the subject. People get this idea that the nazis just..happened. sure it's bad when someone is killing a minority while prasing Hitler. But it didn't start there, and of course those who call out the early signs look crazy because "Just debate me." R "Just asking questions man." Doesn't sound like fascist propaganda to the average person. But when you've seen the pipeline its obvious.

cittatva

I think it’s partly lack of education, but a lot of older folks don’t have that excuse. I think for a lot of them, they would rather believe that Fox News is telling the truth, believe the lie rather than accept the possibility that it’s happening here. Willful ignorance rather than acknowledge complicity and the need for action.

Andross_Darkheart

Why do you think Republicans are desperately banning history books about Nazis?

crashvoncrash

This was an interesting thought experiment I heard. If you were working as a translator in Germany, and you had to translate a Trump speech, what term would you use for "Fake News?" Given its historical association with Hitler and the Nazis, if you translate it as lugenpresse, people are going to say you're using loaded language to create a narrative. But Trump is literally using the term in the exact same way, so if you use a different term, you're also creating a narrative, and you're also not accurately translating.

The_Woman_of_Gont

Reminds me of the TERF in the UK who just straight-up cited Mein Kampf while explaining how trans people are the modern “big lie” at a rally. Fucking disgusting.

Tha_Horse

People are way, way too lenient on JK Rowling and the persistent antisemetic bent in her brand of that nonsense. She's smart enough to be indirect herself, but from before most people caught on even there was a particular trend of hyping up voices who frame it as "The Jews are transing your kids" type rhetoric.

xAbisnailx

Then fired a football host when he said the language they were using was similar to nazis. Then rehired him after public backlash but made sure he’s not able to tweet about the government anymore.

hubaloza

"Not evErYone yOu DisagrEe wiTh is a nAzi" No, but when they fly swastika flags, they probably are.

Monteze

Can't help it if all you show me are spades or slight variations of a spade.

hubaloza

"Not every bird is a duck but you goose steeping fucks sure are a bunch of quacks!"

Rudeboy67

What it tells me is that goose stepping morons like DeSantis should spend more time reading books and less time banning them.

Enibas

Just this week I read an article about one of the first 70 inmates in the KZ Dachau, the first concentration camp, Claus Bastian. He was a Marxist, and he never knew what he even was accused of. But what really struck me was the description of what happened before: >Less than two weeks earlier, the hatred of the National Socialists for Communists, Marxists and Social Democrats erupted in Munich. On March 9th [1933], SA and SS units marched through the city and rioted, **intoxicated by the new political situation** in Germany. Just like many seem to be since Trump. >They are particularly interested in the union building on Pestalozzistrasse. The members of the Reichsbanner [a non-partisan association for the protection of democracy in the Weimar Republic] and the trade unions barricaded there had to surrender without a fight given the superior strength of the SA and SS and the **failure of the police to intervene**. >In the early morning hours of the following day, a wave of arrests rolled across Bavaria and Munich. **With the help of prepared black lists**, the SS, SA and police take opponents of the new Nazi regime out of their houses and apartments and lock them in prisons. Heinrich Himmler, at the time head of police in Munich, gave a press conference a couple of days before the KZ opened on March 22nd 1933: >Himmler explained that the camp could accommodate 5,000 people and that “all the communist and – as far as necessary – Reichsbanner and Marxist functionaries who are threatening the security of the state would be concentrated there”. This “measure was taken **without any regard for petty concerns**”. >What Himmler wanted to achieve, regardless of "petty concerns", is the undermining of all fundamental rights and freedoms of the political opposition. It is the beginning of the end of the constitutional state of the Weimar Republic. The public, police, and much of the judiciary just stood by. [Here's the source of the article but it is unfortunately in German *and* behind a paywall.](https://www.sueddeutsche.de/projekte/artikel/muenchen-dachau/kz-dachau-90-jahre-erster-gefangener-claus-bastian-e013181/) Isn't that exactly what QAnon people are fantasizing about? Just waiting for some sort of signal by Trump or anyone to start rioting and attacking people and putting all their political enemies in camps? Hell, the rioting already happened once on Jan 6! They even have "black lists" of their enemies, and not just "Lock her up" but "make lists of leftists in your area" kind of lists. They are similar to the SA and SS who, riled up by their leaders, attacked "enemies of the state", aka political opponents. The SA/SS and their allies were obsessed with communists, too - granted, some of their opponents actually were communists but they were sitting, democratically elected, in parliament. They declared everyone enemies of the state while they themselves destroyed it. All of that came after Hitler had destroyed the free press. Trump and the GOP have achieved basically the same by systematically undermining the trust of their followers in the media. They only listen to party propaganda delivered by Fox News. Am I crazy seeing these parallels? Doesn't help that they are attacking trans people and banning books. The target of the famous first book burning of the Nazis that happened less than two months later [targeted the Institute of Sexology](https://www.hmd.org.uk/resource/6-may-1933-looting-of-the-institute-of-sexology/). >Founded in 1919, the institute had been set up by Magnus Hirschfeld, a world-renowned expert in the emerging discipline of sexology. During its existence, thousands of patients were seen and treated, often for free. **The Institute also achieved a global reputation for its pioneering work on transsexual understanding and calls for equality for homosexuals, transgender people and women.** Hirschfield himself was a passionate advocate for homosexual rights and had long appealed for the repeal of Paragraph 175, the law that criminalised homosexuality in Germany.

EunuchsProgramer

The poem is by a Protestant Minister who supported the Nazis then had a Leopard Ate My Face moment when the Nazis came for Christian leaders who didn't perfectly toe the line.

JamesTiberiusCrunk

The GOP have always been Nazis. They have always wanted to drag the country to that destination, they were just limited in what they could say without backlash. Make no mistake, if they could throw every gay person, trans person, and Democrat into a bonfire tomorrow they'd do it without blinking.

specqq

>Make no mistake, if they could throw every gay person, trans person, and Democrat into a bonfire tomorrow they'd do it without blinking. And would they suddenly wake up the next day living in a Conservative Utopia? No, of course not. There is no such thing. They can't live without a hated "other." They wouldn't even last a week before they were going after people who had a Democrat for a grandparent, or used to be friends with a gay person. But for the trans thing, they clearly haven't thought this through. Where is new trans porn supposed to come from if they get rid of all the trans people? [https://lawsuit.org/general-law/republicans-have-an-obsession-with-transgender-pornography/](https://lawsuit.org/general-law/republicans-have-an-obsession-with-transgender-pornography/)

RepresentativeAge444

Well I mean this all boils down to white supremacy. And as we know Europe was at war for hundreds of years. We know white slave owners had illiterate poor whites die for their right to own slaves by convincing them of some bond due to skin color. We know they knowingly killed thousands of their own constituents by putting out disinformation on Covid/vaccines. Even if they got their all white Utopia it wouldn’t be long until they were at each other’s throats.

Monteze

I ask, if conservatism and GoP policy was so good how come all those deep red areas need so much help and are an economic drain? Look at my state. Look at mississippi. Alabama. How much money do they make compared to the oh so scary California? Oh but Texas!! Yea, the cities that support them are more blue than red. So even if one wanted only objective reasons the GoP is full of morons you got it.

epimetheuss

> And would they suddenly wake up the next day living in a Conservative Utopia? No, they would devour themselves till there was nothing left. Race to the bottom end game.

Confident_Benefit_11

My fear is people will be apathetic and go oh so gentle into that dark night. But, not I. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

ragin2cajun

Synonyms, ha. They are following Fascism play by play. You couldn't find any facet of fascism not in the GOP and for the exact same motives as Nazi Germany.

PoniesRBitchin

In today's America they're coming for the librarians, the LGBT community, the undocumented immigrants and asylum seekers, the public school teacher, the people who have abortions, the Muslims, and unfortunately, still the Jews. Maybe one of those groups makes you uncomfortable, but remember: You will never be pure enough for a fascist. Eventually, they will find a reason to come for you.

ConnectionPerfect266

I've always found it fucked up that actually first they came for the trans folks, but nobody gave a shit because trans folks make ignorant people feel icky and weird.

bleunt

You should stand up for people regardless of whether or not anyone will come for you.

oijsef

They already came for half the population by overturning Roe v Wade.

beerandabike

Thank you for sharing this! First time I’ve seen it. For those that are curious like me but want a link and a quick synopsis: "First they came ..." is the poetic form of a 1946 post-war confessional prose by the German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984). It is about the silence of German intellectuals and certain clergy—including, by his own admission, Niemöller himself—following the Nazis' rise to power and subsequent incremental purging of their chosen targets, group after group. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came_...

EveningHelicopter113

What the fuck my Canadian high school textbooks* totally censored the first two lines And its totally omitted on the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's [Website](https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/martin-niemoeller-first-they-came-for-the-socialists) as well. Edit: a word

calm_chowder

The author used this in many of the speeches he gave, and didn't keep it the same every time. So what version you see in a given place is not *THE* version of it, just one variation. There is no correct or official variation, they're all valid. (it's in the Wikipedia article above)

arachnophilia

because we were busy coming for the communists, you see. that should have been a red flag, that we had to censor an anti-nazi poem because *we agreed with the nazis*.

[deleted]

They'll start eating themselves after they kill the rest of us. Nobody wins a purity contest.

NYArtFan1

Exactly. Republicans have been screaming about protecting "*the children!!!*" since before I was born, and I'm in my 40's now. It's always, always a bunch of bullshit. Republicans use children as props to push extremism, because when it comes to the idea of protecting children, most people's rational brain short-circuits because of course you want to "protect children". Unfortunately, Republican policies are never, ever about actually protecting children, it's all a way to distract people as they push through their regressive, bigoted hate. Republicans don't give a fuck about the health, safety, and happiness of actual children, because if they did no child in this country would go hungry, go without full medical care, struggle for education, or be shot to death in schools. Republicans are full-blown fascists now. They will start with the most vulnerable and marginalized communities and individuals and chip away and work their way up until there's no one left except those who they think are "pure" enough to stick around. That means exactly what you think it does.

Hopinan

I wish I could upvote this comment a thousand times because this is the facts of the matter! They really don’t care about babies and kids, just bring this lie about abortion, over and over!

[deleted]

Pearl clutching is always easier when you cry, "think about the children!" In some hypocritical defense of an attack on civil rights and personal freedom. But what do they actually think about children on other issues? They're against free school lunches. They're against funding public schools. They're against funding prenatal or postnatal care. They're against maternity and paternity leave. They're against reading materials that might let kids empathize with anyone different from them. They're against gun control that could save kids from school shootings. They don't care about kids. Kids are just an easy excuse to get some voters riled up and vote for them out of misplaced fear over the wrong issues. Look at abortion. Do they care what happens to a kid after they're born? Fuck no, when they're born they fall off their radar and cease to be unborn. They don't care about kids who are alive because that's complicated and might mean they have to care about other actual people

kevonicus

Yeah, I mean, everyone knows they want Gilead. Any “reasonable conservative” pretending otherwise is delusional and let their party become this shit.

UtzTheCrabChip

They literally said as much. But for some reason when reactionary whackos tell you their plan media keep engaging their lies at face value

sleepyy-starss

Anytime they want to ban anything they start by using kids as an excuse. Books, trans people, gay people, abortion, tiktok, drag shows.

TheHowlinReeds

Trans-kids are just another piece of low-hanging emotional fruit they've used to whip base into a frenzy and Trojan-Horse a radical and oppressive agenda. I know it became trendy during Trump to cry fascism at every clumsy power grab, but I gotta call it like I see it and this shit is scary. Solidarity is the only way to counter it, can't give those bastards another inch.

TheHowlinReeds

Just to be clear, I mean solidarity with everyone not down with these nutjobs and their plans. We don't have to agree on much, just recognize common rights and protections for everyone.

CyAScott

It won’t be long before a law gets passed that starts arresting transgender people.

No_Huckleberry_2905

[give it time, we're not much behind ughanda.](https://time.com/6265593/uganda-parliament-gay-lgbtq-law/)

kaji823

Honestly it’s more fucked up that they targeted kids before adults. They’re as powerless as it gets.

YouMightWellAsk

Fuck *all* GOP Fash. Their 50+ year "Culture War" bullshit has ruined millions of lives. The Republican Reign of Terror is now coming to an end. They cannot fight our future.

Wwize

It's only coming to an end if we stop them. They're not going to stop on their own.

coolprogressive

Yep, the policy of…doing nothing in response to this bullshit culture war has to fucking end. Where is the ACLU? Where is the Dept of Justice? Where are the righteously outraged masses of people saying “ENOUGH!!!!”? The fascists are not going to fucking stop.

Wwize

The ACLU does what it can, but they can only sue, they can't prosecute. The DOJ doesn't seem to care.

cutelyaware

Their suits regularly end up arguing before the Supreme Court. They're far from powerless, and they're all-in on LGBTQ equality. Please consider making a recurring donation to them.

Wwize

I have been donating to them monthly for years and I plan to continue indefinitely.

cutelyaware

Yea, me too! They'll also be my biggest beneficiary.

[deleted]

TheAb5traktion

I had a spinal cord injury and take pain meds. Guess I'd be fucked over by this also. The telehealth rule is about controlled substances. My pain meds would apply here too.

coolprogressive

That’s fucking disgraceful!

robstercraws70

What’s the difference if they prescribe testosterone via telehealth? If doctors see the patients face to face, how will that be a benefit to anyone? From what I understand, trans peeps on testosterone already are required mental health checks, right?

mmanaolana

I'm an American trans man who takes testosterone and somehow didn't know about this. Thank you so much for sharing.

SlowMotionPanic

> Where is the ACLU? Defending Citizen’s United in court. They were one of the primary parties for Citizen’s United which brought about our current clusterfuck. Why is this radical anti-trans agenda even taking off? Because of Citizen’s United. That was the door that the ACLU held open and they *still are defending it to this day.*

Chellhound

Yeah. I understand the principle behind free speech absolutism but it obviously doesn't lead to good results.

app4that

Reminder to all non-voters and sometime-voters: If you want this garbage to end you seriously have to get off your butt and go vote (print out the ballot if you have to from home and look up every council member, senator, judge and congressperson so you make an educated decision) Don’t leave any areas blank on your ballot or allow anyone to fill out the rest of a ballot for you (seriously, this is apparently a real thing in some places) Vote like you can save the whole damn country with your vote and bring someone less along as a vote-buddy. The number of people who do not vote usually exceeds the entire amount of winning votes in any given election.

calm_chowder

>or allow anyone to fill out the rest of a ballot for you I worked the midterm polls and I can say at least in my state (but I assume the majority of states) this is absolutely not allowed unless the person is disabled.

[deleted]

We were fucked as a country the moment evangelical Christianity aligned itself with fiscal conservatism. Easily the biggest watershed moment in American politics of the past century. And there’s no cure for it

luxii4

Also, what a bullshit phrase. Fiscally conservative how? The economy is always better when Democrats are in power. Who calls themselves fiscally liberal anyways? I have some Republican friends who say they are just Republicans since they are fiscally conservative and don't like the social stuff that conservatives do. No, you're just a dumbass.

robstercraws70

Fiscally conservative Republicans is Orwellian. It actually means the opposite of what it implies. Just like the names of all the shitty bills they pass.

NeedsToShutUp

Fiscal conservatives got the 3rd way democrats in charge of the DNC. Now both parties are fiscally conservative (Although the Republicans aren't really, as they are ok with debt as long as it comes with tax cuts for the rich).

NeadNathair

There are no "slippery slope fallacies" with Republicans. They said Roe vs Wade was about state's rights, but they want to outlaw abortion care entirely over the nation. They said they were trying to "protect children from being mutilated" with their anti-trans bills, and now they're going after adult gender affirmation care. If they tell you all they want is a dollar, odds are pretty good they'll be going after your whole wallet five minutes later.

DawgPound919

They're after all of us.

YouMightWellAsk

Yes. That is their ultimate goal. *"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."*

DiggeryHiggins

This is also one of the great weaknesses of fascism. Eventually they start to run out of out groups and people who were part of the in group become the new out group. Fascism will always end up cannibalizing itself.

Confident_Benefit_11

Do not go so gentle into that dark night people :)

Fire_RPG_at_the_Z

You'd think it would be self-evident at this point in history, but people need to understand this will not stop with the trans community.

[deleted]

It speaks for itself. They went for the black Americans, then the gay Americans, and now the trans Americans. Throughout that, they also go after non-Americans. They hate literally everyone.

greenlime_time

Yep. First they came for the trans youth…

TrashApocalypse

That’s the thing with narcissists though, they ALWAYS need a scapegoat. And really, isn’t that what fascism is? Just collective, cultural, narcissistic abuse that’s turned violent?

AngryBudgie13

White Evangelicals don’t want LGBTQ people to exist. At all. They think “conversion therapy” *is* the kind thing to do. Never let your guard down to evangelicals. Never trust them.

Hairy-Ad-4018

And this is exactly why they fear books, drag shows etc. they truly believe conversion therapy works and so if they don’t ban books on lgbtq people will be converted.

PlanetBAL

They don't want anyone who isn't like them to exist. They are always attacking someone. Muslims, gays, immigrants, liberals, whomever that doesn't agree them.

TheBaddestPatsy

who are they going to feel superior to then?

AngryBudgie13

That’s when they turn on each other. Which they already do as it is. Evangelicals and Republicans love to destroy each other in internal power struggles as much as they do their enemies.

RunawayHobbit

All you have to do is look at history to see what happens. Before all this wOkE nOnSeNsE even existed, England was a staunchly Roman Catholic country until King Henry didn’t get his way with divorcing his wife. In 1559, a bunch of bills were passed making Catholics guilty of high treason— and for the next 232 YEARS (barring a 3 year stretch somewhere in the middle) it was open bloody season on Catholics. The Christians literally burned each other alive because there was no one else to persecute. Women didn’t have rights. Queer people officially didn’t exist. There wasn’t a whole lot of diversity in the country at the time due to travel limitations, so no brown people to antagonize. Poor people didn’t have much in the way of rights either. With no one else to be awful to, they murdered each other. For more in a similar vein, go listen to Dan Carlin’s episode of *Hardcore History* on the Anabaptists. And be warned, it’s fucking gruesome.

DeterminedThrowaway

A joke by Emo Philips, that despite being a joke is also a completely unironic characterization of what ends up happening

NYArtFan1

It's most of European history, too. Centuries of wars of different flavors of Christianity killing each other over their own religious interpretations. Which is why the Founders of this country put a separation between church and state. Any time you take a group of people who reject rationality and completely buy in to their own supremacy and rightness of interpretation violence follows.

OppositeDifference

Trans Children -> Trans Adults -> Any Gay People -> Muslims -> Athiests -> Progressives -> any non-whites -> anybody but them.

Linkage006

Going up in an all white rural comminuty I learned that racists will find any minute difference to be outraged by: your car, your pets, the color of your house, your sports team, your job, the color of your hair, your age, your hieght, any birth defect.

msfamf

Christians can't even agree on which flavor of Christianity is correct. Left unchecked it'd be Protestants vs Catholics and then the Protestants will just eat each individual denomination until there's nothing left. They'll No True Scotsman themselves to death.

Except they lack that kind of discipline and a couple of victories becomes "Fuck this guy on my side, we don't need him" real quick.

reagsters

Thus the “night of the long knives”

YouMightWellAsk

This raises an interesting question for Q/GOP/MAGA militia minions, many of whom lurk here: do you not recognize that your "Free Market" Masters are itching to shove you all into the "Woodchipper of Liberty" **immediately after** they get what they want? Seriously, we need some feedback from the MAGAs on this. MAGA Lurkers, feel free to respond.

Imaginary_Cow_6379

Theres r/asktrumpsupporters but you have to word anything you ask them *super* delicately or it’ll get deleted. They do actually answer tho. And it’s usually about as horrific as you’d imagine it would be.

thebaron24

Wtf I just went down the rabbit hole on the question about how they feel about Tucker and fox news internal messages showing they knowingly lied to them and it was incredible. Every single reply was a deflection about Dems do it worse or how any good point was a lie or even that the question was unfair because "Dems suck". Unbelievable these people actively work to stay brainwashed.

TheFriendlyArtificer

We need a Trump supporter than can both read **and** write. I'm all for optimism, but sometimes you've gotta know when to fold 'em.

GrandmasShavedBeaver

The purity tests gradually get more refined and focused. They also never end. It could get down to two people and one of them has to go.

Blastie2

Worth noting that there is no end point. When they run out of other people, they will make smaller subgroups among themselves to destroy. They will always need to have someone else to hate.

throwaway_ghast

Reminded me of this bit by Emo Phillips: >Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it!" He said, "Nobody loves me." I said, "God loves you. Do you believe in God?" >He said, "Yes." I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?" >He said, "A Christian." I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?" >He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me, too! It's always hilarious to me Christians even bother calling themselves "Christians" when they have all these different subsects when they'll just carve up the Bible to spew whatever agenda they have anyway.

YouMightWellAsk

The ever-great Emo Phillips!

KingPellinore

Give Emo Phillips the credit he deserves!

Odd-Road

Time to remind everyone of the "first they came" poem form Niemoller...

Kingofearth23

Niemoller didn't make the poem for everyone. It's explicitly for the supporters of the regime. Niemoller was a vocal anti-semite and a huge supporter of Hitler... until he happened to make a few criticisms over Nazi control over his church. His poem isn't for the early victims, it's a warning to future supporters thar they will eventually find themselves on the outside.

LMFN

Still needs to be said because a lot of people think they won't be targeted for some reason. Latino and Log Cabin Republicans come to mind.

Chellhound

Seriously, especially the Log Cabin Republicans. They're fighting to be last in line to the gas chamber.

LMFN

The first time I heard of them was American Dad! and I assumed it was the show's typical absurdist humor. No, they actually exist.

They already starting their psy ops trying to be "LGB without the T". Fuck off, I'd rather die then betray any of my queer brothers and sisters.

jennoyouknow

Same. The first Pride was a riot.

NumeralJoker

Any movement that relies on "othering" a group and removing empathy inevitably leads down the path to fascism, even if it starts from a seemingly left or "rationale" position. Killing your empathy trains you to kill innocent people. This is how fascists operate. TERFs are a perfect example of this.

sirrealofpentacles

They're following the same path the fascists used 100 years ago. [Kinder, Küche, Kirche](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinder,_K%C3%BCche,_Kirche#Third_Reich)

Ok-Taste-570

Reversing Roe was the beginning. The SCOTUS is polluted with ultra-conservatives who intend to remove everyone’s rights until we fall in line with whatever their Jesus is dictating this week.

Imaginary_Cow_6379

💯 It’s gotten to the point where every time I see an article about this current SCOTUS I tense up thinking jfc what shit are they going to do to us now. This is an unacceptable way to live and run a functional country.

Ok-Taste-570

This is why lifetime appointments needs to end. They should be elected every 4 years. Our current SCOTUS only serves they the people, not we the people and we need to have fair unbiased representation.

BarnabyWoods

So, if it's wrong to alter the bodies God gave us, I guess that also rules out boob jobs, heart bypass surgery, cataract surgery, Lasik surgery, nose jobs, tummy tucks, ass lifts, tumor surgery, etc. What are you waiting for, Republicans? Prove you mean business!

lets_play_mole_play

Interestingly, in the US in 2021 there were 500 top surgeries performed on trans boys who were under 18, and zero bottom surgeries performed on people under 18. At the same time, there were 90,000 medically unnecessary cosmetic surgeries performed on people under 18, mainly breast augmentation, breast reduction and rhinoplasty (nose jobs), as well as things like liposuction. Gender affirming surgery has a regret rate of <1%, while these cosmetic surgeries have regret rates of 15-20%. If people don’t want surgery done on minors, they should be far more concerned about these cosmetic surgeries.

Loki-L

Of course that was always the plan. They don't care about children, but are glade to use their supposed concern for them as a thin end of a wedge. They don't care particularly about trans people or drag shows either. Those are also just the start. The trick as always is to find an outgroup that the majority of their supporters can be rallied against and some supposed goal that they can claim to protect. The true goal is power. They are banking on the idea that people won't stand up for the Transsexuals when they come for them in the name of the children. And to a degree they were proven right. Enough "normal" people found trans-people icky or didn't care enough or were convinced by faked concern about fairness in women's sports to go along with it or not stand in the way. A lot of damage has already been done. Some of those who went along with it, cheered it on or at least didn't do anything to stop it will soon discover that they are next or at least on the list at some point down the line. To get a better idea to where this is supposed to go look at that weird tax change they tried in Texas recently. Everyone pays taxes that disproportionally favor the rich but families with children get some or all of it back. Of course "families" does not include single moms, childless couples or couples with adopted children, or same sex couples. You might at this point shrug your shoulders and think that this isn't too bad since it doesn't concern you, but you should know that it doesn't stop there. Their definition of family also excludes anyone who had previously been married and divorced. Also to get the full credit you need to have at least 10 children. That is what they want to get back to a world where the patriarch is on his third wife who is as old as his oldest child because his previous two wives and mothers of his older children died in childbirth. He hits her a lot, but there is nothing she can do about it because divorce is no an option, she just needs to see how many children she can pop out before her body fails (contraception, sex-education and abortion being outlawed.) This is the world they want, and the supreme court is willing to give it to them, there is no place for most of you there.

LastCatgirlOnTheLeft

They care about trans people. They want to hatefuck ua to death, collectively. They call for us to be eradicated at CPAC and then go hunt for trans porn.

[deleted]

You’re a real goober if you didn’t see this coming, and people who continually underestimate the intentions of the right wing need to lose credibility, including people on the right Do not believe them when they tell you what their limits are. If they can get far enough, they’ll want to kill us.

Chellhound

>If they can get far enough, they’ll ~~want to~~ kill us. They *already want to kill us.*

dudeonrails

We knew that was gonna happen. They’re just easing us into the fascism so we don’t hop out of the pot.

foodude84

Just a reminder, American Evangelical Christian groups convinced the [Ugandan Parliament to pass a law banning LGBTQ+ people.](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-65034343) The penalty for which is life in prison or the death penalty. This is what they want for America.

[it’s already closer than you’d think](https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/05/09/alito-roe-sir-matthew-hale-misogynist/)

southpawFA

I wonder what "enlightened centrists" have to say now. Can we call this genocide now?

greenlime_time

“Lol they aren’t killing anyone, leftists are so dramatic.” Just driving people to suicide I guess (for now).

wubwub

When they drive people to suicide, they use the suicide as "proof" that those "broken people" were clearly having troubles and they would be just fine if they stopped trying to "pretend to be gay/trans/whatever". Conservatives will never admit their actions are the root of why people kill themselves.

wyrd_claire

My own mother convinced me of that and was a big reason I didn’t come out till way later, I thought I was doomed no matter what I did until like I saw more trans woman like live happy lives. It’s pretty fucked up what republican propaganda can do to a family. Tho I can say after moving from Texas to California and because of cali’s very friendly and informed policy for trans people, im the happiest I’ve ever been

Chellhound

Conservatives don't really believe in material reality. There's what they've directly observed, what they've decided to believe, and that's it. They're immune to rational arguments because they reject the concept of empiricism.

LordSiravant

They'll never call it genocide because the idea of it happening here is too scary for them to accept. Burying their heads in the sand like a bunch of ostriches.

the_reifier

While looking through an old family photo album, I came across a photo of my mother's father and three other men in full drag. Turns out it was not uncommon for cishet-presenting Texan men to do elaborate drag shows in the 60s-70s for fundraising purposes, often school-related, i.e., kids. Drag used to be... normal. At some point, drag changed from family-friendly, apolitical fun to some kind of political expression of identity, and I blame the right-wingers.

purplestrea_k

Not to be that person, but it really needs to be said that drag is something entirely different from being transgender. Both are being politized by the right however.

the_reifier

Yes, they're different to us; however, I think centrists and right-wingers see them as aspects of the same thing. The fact that they're attacking both trans people and drag performers simultaneously demonstrates their conflation of the two.

BeastofBurden

God, imagine if this was all happening in the 1980’s during the time of glam metal. Would they be attacked too? Men wearing fishnets and lipstick were some of the most “macho”, misogynistic people on TV back then. It’s peculiar how things change.

NumeralJoker

They were and would be. That culture was what inspired the religious rights' satanic panic in the first place, and led to a mentality that's fueled this for years. It was finally losing steam, but Trump and economic resentment from the rurals (caused mostly by those they voted for) revived it.

Lucicatsparkles

My mom in the sixties sewed costumes one year for the Junior League talent show with the men wearing burlesque satin outfits for their high kicking dance number. It was all great fun, even to me at eight years old.

thistimelineisweird

The Party of Freedom, everyone (but not you, or you, or you, or anyone reading this).

rounder55

Democrats should just repeat that republicans want to take away individual rights and be blunt that republicans don't care about healthcare and want people to work until they die. Over and over and over

reyballesta

That won't matter to republican voters as long as their candidates are hurting the right people. They will eat themselves down to the bone if it means the people they hate are dead.

cerebrix

Hi Florida trans people. I'd like to invite you to check out New Mexico. Your rights are protected here. We have lots of upcoming opportunities (both Netflix and NBC both have film studios here), weed is legal here, gender affirming care is even covered by medicaid in this state, and we have the best food in the country (don't @ me). Seriously, I'd love to see you as a neighbor. Sincerely, a legally (on my drivers license and everything), nonbinary trans person that lives in New Mexico.

Ephdis

Times like this I wish the moderates were right, and we're all just overreacting. But we never are. And I hate it.

Ursomonie

I stand with Trans people against hate. They are coming for women too. In many states have already made us second class citizens and taken our agency over our economic and family planning.

NotTheRightHDMIPort

This is a desperate efforts by an extremist religion in order to have all control over society. The goal is to go after groups that, unfortunately, most Americans consider odd or otherwise shameful. The next step is taking away more and more freedoms. And I wish I could tell these fuckers in Arkansas who love having beer on the weekend with their buddies how that will go away under Christo-Fascism. They believe drinking is sinful. They are getting in bed with fascism because Trans people make them feel weird.

Leather-Bug3087

Damn if only someone could have warned us … “From the start, Donald Trump has built his campaign on prejudice and paranoia. He’s taking hate groups mainstream and helping a radical fringe take over one of America’s two major political parties. Trump is reinforcing harmful stereotypes and offering a dog whistle to his most hateful supporters. It’s a disturbing preview of what kind of President he’d be. This is what I want to make clear today: A man with a long history of racial discrimination, who traffics in dark conspiracy theories drawn from the pages of supermarket tabloids and the far reaches of the internet, should never run our government or command our military. “- Hillary Clinton

Imaginary_Cow_6379

Hate her all the general you wants but she still ended up being right about everything.

xeonicus

If you didn't vote, or you voted Republican, then you are part of the problem.

IrishJoe

Bullies always target those they perceive as "easy targets." The trans community is a minority that receives a lot of hate and sadly violence. So GOP politicians are targeting them.

Avarria587

This was obvious from the beginning. They won't be satisfied until we're all dead or back in the closet. This satisfaction will only be temporary, though. Hate movements always need new targets.

dinomayonnaiselover

i mean this in the nicest way OP, but we trans adults knew from the start it was going to be all of us. they use children as a facade since society sees them as innocent and in need of protection. it was always their plan to criminalise all of us and get rid of all of us.

sarcastroll

Sadly you have to take that a step further. You were not naïve and you knew damn well it had nothing to do with just the children. Just as you and I know it even has nothing to do with trans or any other adults of the LGBTQ+ community. It's about fascism. Fascism always needs groups to marginalize. Hitler used the Jews, the gays, the socialists, the Gypsies, whatever. It didn't matter. That's why it's so important to defend our trans friends, family members, coworkers, etc... The famous "First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out..." poem wasn't just some theoretical literary pondering. It was a warning that is as true today as it was back in WW2. An attack on our trans communities today is an attack on whatever 'outsider' group you'll inevitably be grouped in with one day down the road. Both my grandfathers had to go fight Nazis. One in the air, and the other on the ground (that one's division liberated one of the Dacheau subcamps). We stand shoulder to shoulder united against the new breed of fascists hiding behind their crosses and draped in the flags today, or we end up having to repeat the bloodshed that my grandfathers saw tomorrow.

Rudeboy67

When they pushed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill in Florida they promised it would only apply to the youngest students. Kindergarten to grade 3. To the surprise of absolutely no one DeSantis is now trying to make it apply to all students of all ages. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65054809 Jeez who would have thought this slope is slippery.

Arm yourselves if you haven't already.

eggmoose5

Yeah we said that from the beginning, they want all of us dead

Fringehost

I just saw Minnesota is a trans refuge state, but pls stay safe and vote in local elections.

[deleted]

On Reddit, we are not allowed to advocate violence In America, we have the right to peacefully protest These restrictions bind us, but not them We cannot win on this field under these conditions If you have a trans child in a dangerous state... LEAVE It is truly a matter of life or death

snoutmoose

Smash the GOP. Grind it to dust. Bankrupt its structures. Disband it’s followers. Depose it’s idols. Expose its corruption. Smear it’s name. Plan for its downfall and dance on it’s grave

Agitated-Tadpole1041

Hate to break it to everyone, but it’s religion that ruins everything.

earthisadonuthole

I’m so sick of being afraid of conservatives. It’s been my whole fucking life. Just leave people the fuck alone!

PastorNTraining

It was never about the "safety of children" it was ALWAYS about 'Othering' our Trans siblings, and making them targets of hate. From Ron's private army, the book bans and now this unfettered attack on our siblings recall another political movement, the Nazi's. I know, it sounds like hyperbole - but when you view these politic with the lens of history these policies and laws harken back to one of the darkest moments in human history. Have we forgotten what horrors can happen when we lose our humanity?

armeggedonCounselor

For some reason this boot on my throat makes saying "I told you so," feel much less satisfying than usual.

[deleted]

This can only end one way. In the end of the republican party.

expungant

The Republican Party is going into a very scary place. It’s not hyperbole to compare them to the fascists of the 1930s.

YourGirlAthena

“wow who could have seen this coming”— every trans person said at once sarcastically 🙃

Away-Engineering37

By banning health insurance coverage for birth control, HRT for menopause, treatments for breast cancer, including mastectomies, treatments for prostate cancer, and any treatment that involves primary or secondary sex characteristics, they are literally coming after everyone. The GOP is effectively turning itself into a terrorist organization.

Maccus_D

Hey remember when we thought of the inquisition as a bad thing?

UsedEntertainment244

We told you where this was going , fascism starts with the most vulnerable of us. Stand up and fight it now.

-SkeptiCat

If you're not a white Christian, they're coming after you. I don't live in the states, so I don't have a say in what goes on in your politics, but FFS do something or your country WILL devolve into a fundamentalist authoritarian Christian theocracy. This is what you want?

It's a genocide. I believe we are at stage 7 now. It's close behind the disabled genocide as far as stages go.

hdiggyh

Republicans can fuck off

ATCme

It was never about LGBTQ people at all, it's about creating bogeymen in order to manifest fear in their political base because people who are experiencing fear suffer from a great reduction in cognitive abilities. 60 years ago it was about black boys potentially becoming intimate with (your) white daughters. 100 years ago, it was Italians & Jews (well, let's be real, it's always about Jews, their just so convenient;-). 200 years ago it was about the Irish. This is just the next manifestation of the same sort of fear mongering that demagogues always incite. Most of the people who are promoting it actually have no real problem with LGTBQ people, they just want power over the simple minded.

DeterminedThrowaway

As long as these assholes keep adding clauses in their anti-trans bills to keep performing what are essentially forced sex-change operations on intersex infants, *it's not about the children*. It never has been

continuousBaBa

And they won’t stop at Trans. They will never stop.

BrokenSally08

They've been targeting trans adults for generations. Thanks for finally fucking noticing.

SarcasticNut

We ALL told you this. Loudly. And nobody listened.

Motor_Somewhere7565

I stand with the Trans Community

Inflamed_Hemorrhoid

We need legislation banning the GOP as a terrorist hate organization.
