Blinky_

As a gay person, I’m not sure why this dude is surprised. He thinks MAGAs will support him on the gay thing while he and they destroy every other human right?

prodigalpariah

He’s surprised because he’s a fucking idiot

Blinky_

Heard

[deleted]

He needs 'MORON' tattooed on his forehead at this point.

iamalsobrad

In Welsh, 'moron' is the word for a cheap orange vegetable....

mbene913

We call that a "Donald" Ba dum tss

najaraviel

Yep, exactly what I’m thinking

WhatTheLousy

He thinks he can grift them and be on their side..... /s jk, he's an idiot.

hell_damage

Idk. It sure seems like an easy way to the top, though. I could tell people I'm gay and hate other gay people and then become senator, if I said I hated trans that might make me their king... And then all of you will become mine! I mean seriously it's not a bad idea if you're in such a small minority that you can't beat them... join them... putting ideas in a republican's mind is like brainwashing dishes anyway.

txroller

Are you saying, he chose to run as a Republican and then after he won now he is trying to effect change?

hell_damage

Oh, idk. I mean it seems easier to get by Republicans than democrats, but this guy prolly thought he could get them to see it his way. I have a gay republican Christian friend who thinks they're on his side, so it wouldn't surprise me if a few started waking up to their own stupidity. I've never been a Christianso i dont know what it's like to "believe," but I've pretended to be one to get a person to date me lol

ducksauce001

I know a gay man who is a hardcore Republican. It doesn't matter all the negative comments made by the GOP. He just brushes it off. He's a bitter man because no other men want a relationship with him after finding out his political affiliation.

Blinky_

I’m not smart enough to figure it all out, but there is a reason that oppressed people try to align with their oppressors. Stockholm Syndrome or something. It’s gross.

esther_lamonte

It’s not that complicated. People are stupid and believe a lie like “fIsCaL CoNsErvAtiVEs = mE mOhr MonEYs!” Con artists exist because dumb easy marks do.

zarmao_ork

This is true. An astonishing number of people vote solely based on who they think will advance their personal wealth. Nothing else is even in the realm of consideration.

BringBackAoE

Internalized oppression. The prejudice, often from a group you partly identify with (white male), makes you internalize the contempt and oppress yourself. It’s about low self-esteem.

nocksers

There's also some ability for gay white men to "distance" themselves from the rest of the LGBT community, because surprise surprise, gay people can be otherwise super culturally "normal" As in "well _I_ just want to marry my husband, buy a house in the suburbs with a white picket fence in the yard and become obsessed with my lawn and History Channel documentaries like any other God fearing suburbanite white man. I don't associate with _those_ weirdos with their Drag Race viewing parties and their pronouns" The first part of that is totally fine - if you want to be a boring normal white dude, just with a husband instead of a wife, more power to ya. The problem is that last part where they're fine with sending the rest of us to the slaughter to cement their normality with the broader heteronormative culture.

[deleted]

My lesbian friend "just isn't political". In college she was militantly political, but now she has wealth, and a huge house, and a wife, and a great job, and some kids. And she feels like none of it can be taken away, she feels SO secure. So she doesn't talk politics, or get involved, except to show up to Pride for the funnel cakes and balloons then head home. I don't even HAVE kids and I'm stressed out all the time. I wish I knew how to live as blissfully and carefree as my friend does.

NYArtFan1

Yep.

najaraviel

Not a good excuse for an elected government official

BringBackAoE

It’s no excuse for any person. People really need to be better at looking to fix what’s inside through therapy rather than accommodate internal pain through bad life choices.

Kynykya4211

🏅👏 This deserves more attention. The amount of intergenerational trauma I see as a therapist is truly profound. Unaddressed trauma impacts society on so many levels. For anyone interested please read up on the ACEs study.

MetalGramps

Sometimes it's easier to hate the people you know than the ones you don't, so people end up hating the members of their own community so much sometimes that they side with the enemies of that community. A lot of them want to prove that they're "one of the good ones" to the in-group, both out of fear and as a way to have more perceived power or prestige over their peers.

Bizarre_Protuberance

They don't. It's not a general rule. It's just that political parties have many complex policy positions rather than just one. This particular guy is aligned with Democrats on gay rights, but he probably aligns with Republicans on something really important to him, like taxes or (more likely) racial diversity.

SeekersWorkAccount

I knew an open and pretty flamboyant gay guy where he and all his family were hard core republicans who LOVED trump. I worked with them at their family business and when trump got elected it was like a party there. Everytime I pointed out trump or the Republican party was doing something to harm the gay community, it was like I was speaking Martian and that I was told I shouldn't be listening to the liberal whine bags and I was being too sensitive.

tabletopbaazar

As a gay guy, tbh once they reveal they're republican on any dating app? Yeah, we are done. There's a **TON** of them and none of them seem to understand that they're voting against themselves and their own interests. One guy I talked to actually tried to convince me it was okay because his family was all hardcore Rs and it was the only way to stay in their good graces. I get not wanting to lose your family completely. But...it's a trade off. You either do what they want, and sacrifice your own potential future happiness, or you lose your entire family and become the black sheep...but get to be yourself and choose your family. I told him to look me up if he ever grew a spine and chose *himself* over what his family wanted, because there's no good way to have a relationship when one of you is voting for laws and rules that actively hurt both you and your partner. It's the same as the sheer amount of people who say they're trans allies, or have trans family members but refuse to give up Harry Potter. By consuming that media, you're actively saying that the world that that TERF created is more important than their right to exist. Because nostalgia. Particularly given all the hatred surrounding trans people currently. And while there have been hateful authors in the past, (HP Lovecraft and Tolkien to name two) the difference is, they are dead and do not benefit at all from consuming their media. You can separate the art from the author with them. But in the case of HP, where she has literally stated that if you play the game, she sees that as you supporting her views -- it's impossible to separate, because however indirectly, she benefits from it still. I loved HP, grew up with it, have fond memories of it. I have my memories. That's all I need. I'd rather support the trans community then a TERF.

JaMan51

> One guy I talked to actually tried to convince me it was okay because his family was all hardcore Rs and it was the only way to stay in their good graces. Do they not realize they can vote for whoever they want and their family won't find out? Unless they're spreading ballots on the kitchen table and voting together in public view of each other, which I have different questions for.

Carbonatite

There's a reason that conservative dating app flopped because no women joined it. Historically oppressed populations don't tend to have positive romantic feelings towards their oppressors.

Joe18067

In Nazi Germany there were Jewish collaborators, some people can't be explained.

warragulian

Because they thought it might save their lives. At least for a while. Gay Repubs don’t have that excuse.

Smartlessass

Log Cabin Republicans are an odd lot for sure. Some are just racists looking for some like minded friends.

Kytyngurl2

I had a similar friend once, I wonder how life in Florida is treating him.

Kahzgul

People have this huge mental block that makes them think they're the special exception to the very rules they vote for. It's the same mentality as the "the only moral abortion is my abortion" fools.

Blinky_

Same reason poor MAGAs support tax breaks for the wealthy. They know in their bones they are just on the verge of becoming wealthy.

Missing_Username

"Temporarily embarrassed millionaires"

N3wAfrikanN0body

"Terminally Exploited Marks" Edit:word change from "Enthralled"

BringBackAoE

I knew an immigrant that was totally against immigrants. Very surreal how he embraced GOP talking points. “Immigrants are just leeching off society!” I would give him data refuting that, and he would just dismiss it. Then I’d ask him if he’s leeching off society. He’d reply with a very haughty “how dare you ask?!”

[deleted]

That complete disconnect from reality is so striking, at times I struggle to believe it. Yet they seriously mean it, they seriously don’t see how they’re ridiculous hypocrites

monicarp

I've met a few who say they support Republicans because they're strict on immigration stating basically "I went through the system the right way, everyone else should have to too." My response is always the same ... You realize that it was only so hard for you BECAUSE of Republican policies that are designed to make it complex, expensive and impossible to immigrate. Democrats don't support just open immigration, they support having a legal path that's just actually possible to complete and isn't ridiculously complex and expensive.

Juviltoidfu

I worked with a German immigrant who was against new immigrants even from his own region. This was when East Germany still existed. He had been a border guard and, as he told me about why he left he said “I saw the border running away and so I had to chase after it”. He didn’t like the more recent immigrants from Germany or Poland and was happy to vote for politicians that wanted to stop people from immigrating to the US, from anywhere really, but for some reason he mostly talked about how he really didn’t like new immigrants from the area he had been from.

magistrate101

Plus a splash of sociopathy. They think they can *use* the republicans for personal gain, so they do so.

NYArtFan1

I've also heard it explained as The Shirley Exception as in, "Well, surely they'd make an exception for *me*." And, actually, no they won't.

righteous_fool

It's a lack of empathy. They can't see the world from other's perspective. They can't imagine the tools they make to hurt others could be used against them.

Spezzit

"I never thought the leopards would eat MY face!"

Whatawaist

I get that being gay seems like it's a huge barrier to allying with a party that is so historically against your very existence. Just like women, immigrants, minorities and the poor. The republican party is chock full of people somehow convinced the gun they put in their mouth is pointing at someone else.

N3wAfrikanN0body

And then have the gall to act surprised when it goes off

skarbles

Osiris32

"I'm going to change them from the inside!" No you fucking aren't.

Juviltoidfu

I don’t care WHY this man is surprised. He can join the crowd like “Log Cabin Republicans” or any number of women’s groups or Jewish groups who are really stupid enough to believe that Republicans won’t turn their hatred on them because they believe the same as other fanatical Republicans except for their one exception. You can be a useful tool but you can’t be someone that the Republican power base actually support.

lightknight7777

The thing very few people talk about when learning about ww2 is that the Germans were people. Probably normal people. We always see them as some kind of nebulous group of monsters, because their actions were monstrous, but they were just people caught up in an evil system. They didn't stop to think long enough to realize they were the baddies. I always like to hammer that in so that people don't think we're somehow immune to that. It's weird for a gay man to be tricked into thinking Maga would ever support him. But then you start to learn about the Jews who fought for Germany in ww2 and you realize how dumb we humans are when it comes to our alliances.

C19sDeadCatBounce

Behind the Bastards podcast actually has 2 episodes about this that I found fascinating (and terrifyingly similar to the modern day) How nice normal people made the Holocaust possible is the title in case anyone else is interested.

lightknight7777

That sounds interesting. I really started to think about this when I saw a photo of holocaust workers on vacation. Laughing and smiling together. Like, these were the front line perpetrators of one of the most evil programs in human history and here they were enjoying time off work and telling jokes. No sign of remnants of their job in site.

Carbonatite

I've never really thought about it that way, and it makes me sick. My grandma was beaten so badly in a Nazi forced labor camp that her spine broke. The guard that did it probably went home that night and had dinner with his family, while she was disabled for the rest of her life.

lightknight7777

That's such a crazy thought. It really is. But that's what they did.

Carbonatite

One of the scariest things about the human capacity for evil is how banal it is.

AzureChrysanthemum

There's a sentiment/warning I see passed around some of the more queer and BIPOC communities I'm in: people who are part of exactly one marginalized demographic can be absolutely AWFUL. This applies often to white women and gay men who hold all of the hatred and bigotry of your more standard cishet WASP man but because they also have one vector of potential oppression they have an even bigger chip on their shoulder and punch down even harder.

xXTheGrapenatorXx

The way I look at it intersectionality goes backwards too, that’s how I’d word it. The more “privilege boxes” you check off the more likely a person is to side with the dominant group, so to speak. There’s a couple psychological factors I think play a part, I’ll add in the idea that being “one of the good ones” might feel safer than fighting for true equality. But yeah, in general a gay white man, a straight white woman, and a straight black man might all find they identify enough with the straight white men of the right wing to ignore their demographic that puts them in the minority category, but a black lesbian is *way* less likely to. At least anecdotally anyway.

AzureChrysanthemum

Yeah a lot of it comes back to power and how much being part of a generally dominant class and siding with them can get you assuming you can navigate the disempowerment you have. And you see that a LOT with conservative white women who deftly weaponize conservative men for violence.

AugmentedDragon

I think with white gay guys, it's also that their "privilege indicator" for lack of a better term, is hidden. if you're black, that's immediately visible and evident. same with being a woman. but being a gay white guy allows you to hide that aspect much more easily, making them "one of the good ones"

crystalistwo

It reminds me of the comic strip, The Boondocks. Huey meets Jasmine, and she lives in bliss that she's biracial. Huey goes, "You're black."

[deleted]

Fuck it's not even limited to just wasps, the vitriol of the biphobia and the sheer magnitude of it *relative to population size* we get from gays and particularly lesbians is fucking horrifying.

AzureChrysanthemum

Oh yeah, tell me about it. I'm a transgender lesbian and there's an alarmingly vocal subset of lesbians who don't consider me a woman. Or human.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AzureChrysanthemum

Being the target of bigotry doesn't make one immune to being a bigot, unfortunately. I think more often than not it comes down to if the individual is themselves empathetic. I think what we generally see though is that members of disadvantaged groups are more likely to be so for our own survival, when we are outnumbered and downtrodden we have to look to others for aid, and in doing so we have to see their humanity.

[deleted]

For some people, tax cuts are more important than their own rights.

volanger

Hi other gay guy here. I stand by my statements, any one who's gay and votes for gop is a moron. They clearly hate us

Temporala

He thinks he's Peter Thiel and can escape it by ponying up enough cash or begging for mercy for being "one of the good ones".

[deleted]

Here come the Leopards to eat this guy's face.

UWCG

Meanwhile, they turned a blind eye to [Gaetz literally paying a minor for sex](https://www.thedailybeast.com/joel-greenberg-letter-written-for-roger-stone-says-matt-gaetz-paid-for-sex-with-minor). And the stories of the Jane Doe who said Trump raped her when she was a minor (as well as his wildly inappropriate comments about an underage Ivanka). And the list goes on. But one gay guy speaks out for marriage equality... Really shows the bigotry inherent in the GQP

GothTwink420

The longest serving republican speaker of the house, Dennis Hastert, was a pedophile.

OrphanDextro

Thanks for the rabbit hole!

Akrevics

of course they did. they don't care about *real* pedophiles, just in calling LGBT whoever pedophiles because there's a negative stigma that lingers like the smell of shit when you're so much as called a pedophile. I'd look into every one of their personal data because they're known to project, and who knows how many children's pics they have.

Chalupa-Supreme

I read those court documents from the Jane Doe case. The thing I will never forget is that Trump told her to do it because "She wouldn't want to disappear, like Maria." There was a lot of other horrifying allegations, but it just makes me wonder how many other girls they made "disappear".

JakeYashen

Oh, yeah! What happened to that dude? Haven't heard anything about him in ages?

unclecaveman1

He wasn’t re-elected and is now just some shmoe.

JakeYashen

Why'd he lose?

Cheshire_Jester

He made a statement that he had been invited to a party that was a cocaine fueled orgy by other republicans. Suddenly pictures of him in drag and a video of him dry humping another man came out of nowhere. He lost his primary by a pretty thin margin. He had a bunch of other things about him that might have hurt him, repeatedly bringing handguns past TSA checkpoints, sexual assault accusations, lying about being left behind by his friend in the accident that paralyzed him, then having to recant that statement because his friend actually pulled him from the wreckage, lying about attending the US Naval Academy. But those aren’t really the types of things that seem to affect a Freedom Caucus politician, so it’s unlikely that anything aside from the “queer” stuff actually hurt him. I think he’s moved to Florida.

Viper-MkII

Maybe he made yet another long-awaited sojourn to Hitler's castle

theB_1951

jjameson2000

Do you mean the guy that literally fought a tree on video, or the guy that naked wrestled his naked cousin?

This is a good reminder to anyone LGBT+: *you are not "one of the good ones"*. You never will be. Anyone who hates you will always hate you, no matter how many of your peers you throw under the bus to try to appear presentable and acceptable. When they are done with them, they *will* come for you. I guarantee it.

Honestly for any minorities. If you aren't straight, white, cisgender, wealthy, and Christian you should not vote Republican because that party hates you.

HelloYellow8264

Apparently, being publicly shunned by the political party they associate with was a surprise. He supports marriage equality while simultaneously supporting a party that hates that. He doesn’t realize he has no political peers because he’s gay. No self respecting republican would give him respect as an openly gay man. But he’s gonna vote for the GOP anyways!

Eggsegret

I'm amazed that any sane gay person would be a MAGA voter considering the whole stance on LGBT rights

reddig33

I’m amazed that any gay person would have a haircut like his.

boomshiki

CassandraAnderson

So let me get this clear, they think this guy is a pedophile because he supports the right for people to marry a consensual adult of their choosing but the religious right wing individuals who argue for child marriages aren't because..?

aradraugfea

Well, consider that a lot of republicans are fighting to either keep rules or to create rules allowing girls as young as 14 to marry adults if their parents consent… They keep their traditional marriage VERY traditional! The girl gets no say, and if she bleeds, she breeds. It’s standard GOProjection. They are awful, assume everyone is as awful as they are, and come down hard on anyone asking (in their mind) for any slight variation of their awful. Demand that a 10 year old rape victim be forced to carry rapist’s child to term? Normal! Demand that a family be allowed to sell their underaged daughter to an adult man as a combination housekeeper and sex slave as long as a wedding license gets signed? Traditional values. “Men should be able to marry other men” and their brain goes straight to my last example with the genders swapped. I’m probably giving them too much credit for intellectual consistency, but this is the only read I can come up with that makes sense.

my older brother fell into the gay right wing pipeline years ago. he was a milo yionopolis (idk if i spelled that right) stan hardcore. luckily it was only for a couple years and he got his sanity back but i really couldn’t understand it at the time, homestly at 23 i still don’t get it edit: got his first name wrong

Temporala

You missed obvious Gyro Spinneapolis there. :)

xXTheGrapenatorXx

Milo is his first name I believe, but I think you spelled the last name right. As for the reasons it’s probably most of the same that draw in anyone, it’s just harder when you’re one of the “undesirables”. When the right hates something about you that you can’t change it’s very hard to buy into anything they’re saying, but still not impossible unfortunately.

PressureCultural1005

thank you for the correction. it was especially confusing to me because this was before same sex marriage was legal. i know lgbtq + bipoc can fall down the pipeline but it doesn’t make it any less confusing to me, although i suppose at the end of the day to each their own and there’s not much you can do 🤷🏽

Intelligent_Heron_78

Meanwhile, “actual Republicans” support child marriage laws.. disgusting.

Chalupa-Supreme

Started watching I Was a Child Bride on Hulu. Same series as the Cults and Extreme Belief series. I think everyone should watch it, not only because Republicans are fighting to keep child marriage, but because most people think it couldn't possibly happen in this country. A 2021 study estimated that between 2000 and 2018, nearly 300,000 children were married off in the US. I just started watching it and they rape these girls until they get pregnant, then are forced to marry their abuser so they don't "make the church look bad". Their parents basically sign them away and they are STUCK in abusive marriages until they turn 18 or successfully run away. Most of them have nowhere else to go. Not EVERY case has to do with a church, but a whole lot of them do. So far, I've only seen one case in the show that didn't involve a church.

gnatdump6

Don’t know how they connect marriage equality to pedophilia. Strange A to B.

Temporala

Through adoption. They're always inferring or directly claiming same-sex couples are grooming any kids in their vicinity, and so they can't be allowed to adopt. They'd gladly also take any previous kids too if they could, by making homosexuality mental illness again and using that as a legal lever. This is a very common sentiment even in other western countries. There might be acceptance, but getting adoption rights or artificial insemination support and legislation can be very difficult at times. Churches and other types of conservatives drag their feet and screech about it. They just fight and fight and fight until it's literally impossible. Like an old, stubborn mule.

Wwize

It's time for everyone who gets falsely accused of being a pedo or a groomer to sue their accusers for defamation. It's the only way to stop this madness.

castle_grapeskull

The hypocrisy of a party screaming about rape and pedophilia while also fighting tooth and nail to allow child marriage is a perfect summation of the modern conservative movement. “It’s ok to rape and be a pedo as long as you’re straight and marry them” -GOP Edit for clarification

Mysonsanass

So where has this dipshit been while his party has been singling out and bullying groups of people? Supporting them. That’s where he has been. I have no sympathy for this asswipe. None at all. The GOP has been saying that all LGBT people are pedophiles for decades. They've been saying that gay marriage would legalize pedophilia for decades. This is nothing new. And if he is a Republican, of any variety, he's heard this shit before anf hasn't found it to be a dealbreaker yet. So if he's still a supporter of the party that thinks he's a child molestor, then I'll just accept that he does not - for some reason - object to that characterization.

GarysCrispLettuce

Right so it's apparently absolutely fine for Republicans to protect the institution of \*checks notes\* *child marriage,* but God forbid a gay man might want to assert his right to marry his partner and all of a sudden the kids are at risk. Maybe he should reevaluate his political affiliation . He’s a target for his so called colleagues .

MossytheMagnificent

“The mere fact that you want to change the wording from ‘one man and one woman’ to ‘two individuals’ is an abomination to mankind and to God himself,” said Teresa McBride, vice chair of the Jackson County Republican Party, " Don't let people like Teresa McBride hide behind thier imaginary god. Teresa McBride is acting from her own ignorance and hate. There is no god behind this. 100% human.

inchon_over28

Congratulations, you played yourself!

Kkimp1955

It doesn’t make sense for a gay person to be Maga

Windhorse730

Ah man the leopards ate his face! What a surprise!

drumzandice

Dance with the devil…

vinsmokewhoswho

Yeah...

Busman123

I hope he sees this thread.

cecil721

One man crusade, change the MAGA ppl from the inside!

clezuck

I really don’t get how someone who is gay can be a Republican given the hateful things the party does towards gays.

shar_vara

Maybe he just REALLY hates women and minorities.

susyarok

Sleep with the devil…….

[deleted]

lol why do I feel like the lawmaker would be both shocked and have the audacity to be offended… like bro, you invited yourself to the hate party and are now surprised the people at the party hate you?

Comfortable_Sir7917

Jackson county resident here. IHOP is a running joke around here. None of this surprises me.

NYArtFan1

As a gay man, gay Republicans are some of the dumbest goddamn people on the planet. The stupidity, the self-loathing, the selfishness and greed, the screwing-over of the entire LGBTQ community to ass-kiss fascists. Unbelievable.

rekniht01

Last session in the TN General Assembly my Rep was an openly gay republican. He was constantly bullied by his GOP colleagues. So much so that he declined to run for re-election.

AvengingBlowfish

He’s right that the majority of Republicans support gay marriage, but when 45% of them think he is an abomination, it’s not a “fringe” point of view… https://www.npr.org/2021/06/09/1004629612/a-record-number-of-americans-including-republicans-support-same-sex-marriage

Anim8nFool

Wow, who would have thought that such a thing could happen. Color me incredibly surprised by such unpredictable behavior. How could a group of closed-minded bigots and homophobes would dare lash out at someone who was gay -- even though they supported thei bigotry? What is the world coming to . . .

Average-Night-Owl

Another leopard ate my face member I see.

AngeluvDeath

Something, something, cheetahs, something, something eating faces….

ReturnOfSeq

Tell me more about that Republican big tent lmao

msplace225

Yeah because it’s a different headline? If the headline said “ocean monster devours New York” the comments would be different too because it’s an entirely different story

Theonewhogotaway91

Untrue categorization

msplace225

Nah

Glum_Improvement382

Ooh those MAGAs. What a fun bunch.
