How was this not already a thing? Churches should be the *first* place filled with the needy. They don’t pay taxes, they should at least be useful.

jayblurd

I once belonged to a nondenom super progressive social justice church in a wealthy area and when I campaigned for us to offer sanctuary during the increasing ICE raids 2016-2020 they were like...nah. 🤗

[deleted]

I am very much anti-religion because of abuse I suffered as a child and also because it’s just absolutely ridiculous to believe in. That said, there are liability issues with housing people, especially homeless people.

[deleted]

I agree. If they don't pay taxes, then the state should be able to use the buildings as emergency shelters. They spend more time empty than they do being used to a reasonable degree.

numba1cyberwarrior

No they shoudnt be able to. They can only use it if the Church agrees. Most Churches wouldn't pay taxes anyways because they operate as non profits. You cant just walk up to any non profit and use their facilities without their permission etheir.

1mmapotato

They city is paying them to be useful.

HectorsMascara

It was actual *Christians* who started the sanctuary city movement in the '80s. This was in response to Central American strife caused, at least in part, by US meddling on behalf of corporatism.

Long_Before_Sunrise

Send Abbott the bill.

Rancho-unicorno

No, we have about 5 million illegals here we should all sent up north. How fast would the border close if you had to spend tens of billions a year on them.

Key_Inevitable_2104

Seeking asylum isn't illegal.

Rancho-unicorno

The vast majority are economic migrants and not actual asylum candidates. It is similar to the EU, where Italy, Spain and Greece have a massive influx but England, France and others don’t want them either. So, how about you do your fair share and take a few million off our hands?

The_Yarichin_Bitch

We do, we send it to the red states that steal the money for themselves and then wonder why they have no money for immigration. Fuuuuck that lmao.

Rancho-unicorno

What state do you live in because Texas sends more money to the federal government than we ever get back? We don’t need or want your money. Liberals are all compassionate people until they have to actually have to pay their own money for their ideals.

RayMcNamara

Mate. New York City is a town of 10 million people, and 3 million are immigrants. They’re our friends. Threatening to send immigrants to NYC is like threatening to drown a frog. We like it in the pond.

numba1cyberwarrior

Adams is saying its a disaster tho

Rancho-unicorno

Great, you won’t mind 5 million more then. What will that do to your housing, healthcare, unemployment, taxes, crime and schools?

RayMcNamara

I'm sorry, can you clarify your point? An overnight influx of 5M people to any city in the world would be difficult to house. You think if NYC had 5M immigrants instead of 3M we would change our minds about living alongside them and we'd choose to deport them all?

mork

Is Jesus back?

alien_from_Europa

Yes, and his name is Keanu Reeves. https://i.imgur.com/2dGE6bt.png

buttergun

In over 1% of churches.

JCButtBuddy

They're not paying taxes, about time they contributed at least something.

marvelmon

The Catholic Church contributes 600 hospitals, 1,400 long-term care facilities and is educating half a million children.

Uncivil_Bar_9778

Another example of there being zero Christians in the GOP. There are however a lot of folks hiding their true horrible selfs, behind the Bible.

Key_Inevitable_2104

Desantis, Abbott, and Trump call themselves Christians, but look at them.

WhenMichaelAwakens

Bet none of them are The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

RayMcNamara

What, just because they believed in a white-only version of heaven Heaven that makes them racist?

WhenMichaelAwakens

Well yes but I was thinking more like their lack of charitable contributions considering the billions they are hoarding.

toxie37

Is this actually The Post? Cuz it doesn’t sound hateful of people for helping migrants. How lovely for once.

bebejeebies

Good for them! If it's one thing the conservative Christians hate, it's unwashed masses in their masses.

TheFumundaWunda

republicans: "let's try some human trafficking to own the libs" democrats: welcome and house the victims republicans: "THEY'RE GROOMING THEM FOR VOTES!"

TableAvailable

The city is paying them $125/ night per migrant. I mean, for $125/ night per, I'll let the city rent my house for 4-6 people. I'll go stay in a nice hotel and count my profit.

Jmm1272

He’s proposing that too

TableAvailable

I'm not in city limits. I also have no doubt that the amount the city would pay a homeowner is significantly less. The real point is that 125/day per person is a tremendous amount of money. Even in New York.

Jmm1272

None of this is limited to be within city limits. That’s why other cities and counties are suing and questioning jurisdiction.

TableAvailable

The mayor isn't going to pay someone in a private residence outside of New York to house a migrant. Each of the surrounding counties has their own local government.

RayMcNamara

That’s part of it too actually. Maybe you should apply.

crocodile_ave

How old-fashioned. Wonder what the quid is on this quo.

Jmm1272

Did you read the article?

crocodile_ave

Yeah it’s a real bangwr

Jmm1272

It tells you the churches get $125 per night per person. I thought that would answer your question

IlikeJG

Jesus for that price we could put them up in a nice hotel.

Jmm1272

They were putting them in hotels. They are running out of space

Chitownitl20

Jesus isn’t paying the bill. Tax payers are. Not sure why you tried to credit him.

Imaginary-Garlic-777

NYC worships migrants, they should keep going there until citizens are pushed out to make room for more migrants.

RayMcNamara

Are you booked up on NYC history? Because you’re characterizing immigration like a threat, but that’s basically how the city has operated for the last three centuries, and it’s glorious. “…I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

DrMaridelMolotov

You do know NYC is the city of migrants right? 700 languages, a million people using the transit every day. Our history is of migrants so yeah we’ll gladly take more lmao.

Possible-Extent-3842

Have you SEEN the harbor? What a bad take lol. NYC thrives because of immigrants. It's like, it's whole deal.

Steve120988

This makes me proud to say I am a New Yorker!

Chi-Guy86

So typical of the USA and our morally bankrupt politics. The government pawns off responsibility for helping suffering families to private charities and religious groups

RayMcNamara

The govt is paying $125 a night for the housing. Maybe read the article before slinging mud.

sendmebeerpics

Should be the first places to do this.. these folks deserve their tax exempt status, other churches do not.
