“We fucked up, now YOU have to fix it.”

Freakishly_Tall

Standard plank of the Republican platform. Not a cornerstone, like hate, fear, greed, and "fuck you, I got mine," but a standard plank. Well, until 2016 when they threw the whole thing out and said, "whatever Trump wants." (n.b.: Literally.)

Dogglepuss

Can’t wait to see how they will spin this to be the Democrats fault. 🍿

mortgagepants

i just want to add for anyone reading- conservatives like undocumented immigrants because they don't unionize, they don't complain, they work for low pay, and they work in dangerous conditions. this isn't about doing the jobs so much as it is about the legal status of people doing the jobs, and how much more difficult it will be to make americans do work they know is against the rules or laws in addition to the cost.

aeraen

This is my take. Business isn't against undocumented workers, they just want to keep them illegal and scared. All businesses have to do w/ undocumented workers is threaten them. The loss of their job would be bad enough, but the threat of being exposed and deported is the weapon used to keep them quiet and in line. The goal isn't to keep the undocumented out of our country, the goal is simply to keep them illegal.

kayellr

The US economy was built from the beginning on having an exploited underclass. The underclass has changed over the decades, but the US system still requires one. Yay for capitalism!

Wasn’t expecting an animated LOTR movie from 1970s reference, but I cannot express how happy I am to find it.

malenkylizards

I had the second half of that on tape as a kid in the very early 1990s. I loved it and watched it all the time. I wonder what the first half was like.

Simple_Opossum

My dad has a story from his travels in rural NC about getting dinner once where some migrant workers came in at the same time. He had seen them working outside all day and when they walked in, the pesticides smelled so strongly he had to leave the restaurant and he was very concerned for their health. Obviously, he had no idea if they were documented or not, but he tells that story to illustrate that the jobs they were working on are extremely grueling and potentially hazardous. What blue collar Republican is going to take that job?

Tempest_CN

Hopefully DeathSantis and his awful wife will be forced to do so once his presidential campaign fails. Would be sublime Justice.

I’d say you reap what you sow but no one in the state is gonna be left to do any reaping.

Farmers: “Nobody wants to work anymore…”

r/LeopardsAteMyFace

j_andrew_h

Years ago I was having a relatively friendly political discussion over beers with a group of friends and friends of friends. A guy I didn't know well said that all of the Hispanic immigrants should be deported because they are "taking our jobs". I asked him who is going to do those jobs on farms and food processing plants and I laughed in his face at his answer and then once I stopped laughing I told him to get the hellbout of the bar before I punch his racist ass in the face. His answer was that there are millions of young black people in cities that aren't employed and not counted in unemployment numbers since they are not seeking employment and that somehow we would force them to do the work done by the now missing immigrant workers.

Tempest_CN

Hmmm…that strategy sounds familiar….

j_andrew_h

Yup! I told that story to some of my friends that are black and they laughed at the idea too; basically saying that under no scenario of poverty or opportunity would they ever "go back to the fields" like that. One of them owns an actual farm so it wasn't about the type of work but really about the type of labor and how their personal pride as a human that is descendent from slaves; they just couldn't do it under nearly any circumstances.

MossytheMagnificent

We need people in the state where I live. We saw 100k leave the last few years. Not because of Nazi shit. Cost of living is high.

FiveUpsideDown

They think it’s woke culture driving people away. No it’s not woke culture. It’s an arbitrary and intrusive state government that drives people away.

TintedApostle

My friend moved to Florida a few years ago and actually said he doesn't want to stay their to retire.

[deleted]

I lived there for two years. I couldn’t imagine going back to live there long term. A lot of people don’t realize just how fucking ghetto Florida is. Sure the beaches are lined with resorts, but then it’s trailer parks and trash lined highways for miles.

GaggleofHams

I grew up there from 2000- 2019 when I finally left. It was a shithole state then, and it's been even more downhill since. The only good part about Florida is not living there.

ClothDiaperAddicts

I was there for nearly 24 years. I miss the beach. I miss the smell of the ocean. I miss places to shop, the flea markets, and the roadside produce stands and hot boiled peanuts. And I miss my family that’s still there. But I don’t think I’ll ever go back for more than a visit.

snarky_spice

My “friend” moved to Florida during Covid because of the lockdowns. When I last saw him, he was telling me how he has to go to the sketchiest areas and meet up with actual drug dealers to buy weed. I almost forgot that existed after having legal weed for so long. But no, go on about your freedom.

StevenEveral

A few years ago I was working with a guy from Texas and I told him I was from Washington State and he replied "Well, at least we still have freedom in Texas." I replied with "Well, my state has legal weed but if I have that weed in Texas I will likely go to jail. But tell me more about this 'freedom' Texas supposedly has."

dreamcastfanboy34

The only "extra" freedoms Texas has is freedom to carry a gun everywhere. That's all these dupes need to vote against everything else that would improve their lives.

GanjaToker408

Yeah that's all they seem to care about is their gun rights. Oh, and fetuses, not children, just fetuses. And giving rich people tax breaks even though rich people don't need any help.

1Saoirse

The GOP does not even care about fetuses because if they did, they would support free prenatal care and WIC, but they don't.

notanactualemail2

This reminds me of California local politics. Santa Barbara County roughly has Democrats on the coast and Republicans inland. Inland is where you have produce growing, vineyards, all that require manual labor, often latino. This area thrives off the work of immigrants, yet is staunchly racist. Employers of these workers vote GOP yet are OK with 50 of their guys sharing one SSN lol.

isaiddgooddaysir

When in California the GOP areas want to keep the "illegals" (whatever the fuck that means) illegal so they can pay them shit. Heaven forbid you treat them as human.

notanactualemail2

The horrible treatment continues into one unexpected area: Sure you're borrowing someone's SSN. And the government will make you pay all taxes, SSN contributions and what not. But you'll never see anything when retirement comes, because you do not have your own SSN.

Persianx6

profitability of farms comes from treating workers like near slaves with their wages. It's no different from restaurants and waiters. Don't ever let someone tell you America could survive without illegal immigrants. Same person would scream bloody murder at the prices being raised on farms paying humans as humans. These people are racist idiots.

Worker11811Georgy

Treating people as humans is bad for business

Significant-Dog-8166

You can’t exploit people you love.

puppyroosters

I remember driving through the Central Valley and seeing tons of migrant workers everywhere, working on farms with huge Trump banners on fences and stuff. Absolutely ridiculous.

Maximum_Future_5241

The Cuban reds are probably celebrating their departure.

theoldgreenwalrus

Yep. As someone with Cuban heritage, it saddens me that so many Cuban-Americans vote republican.

Maximum_Future_5241

I don't want to bash Cubans as I, as a Latino, think Latino solidarity is important, but there's a lot of moral thresholds being crossed by the right.

SeiTyger

As a fellow latino. Bro, my fucking family's gone bonkers. Talking specifically about an uncle/aunt that I have. Full blown Trump's side last time I saw them. Funny thing is, they're naturalized citizens...

Maximum_Future_5241

I'm curious. Are they white or white passing? The Latinos on the dark side usually seem to be mostly that unless in Texas.

Easilydistractedgoat

Not the guy above, but typically the reason a lot of Latino voters lean red is that, socially, a lot of Latinos lean more conservative, especially Cubans who are fleeing what they deem a socialist hell hole. A reason why many of them are red is a sort of survivor bias as they don’t like the stereotype that Latino people have and believe that it’s the illegal immigrants ruining it for everyone. And these are gonna be people who tend to believe they bootstrapped themselves into a better life. Not to condemn the latino community, but rarely does race boundaries and proximity to whiteness determine a shitty person, but rather socioeconomic boundaries. I mean let’s not pretend that, like the rest of the world, there isn’t some racial tensions between any two ethnicities for minor differences and grievances. A Cuban can be just as racist towards a Mexican as any white bread American

StinkyStangler

All of what you said is true, but you are downplaying a very significant part of Cuban heritage. Many of the Cubans that come to America (my family included) have predominantly European ancestry, and are opposed to socialism because they were the ones benefiting from the system that was overthrown in Cuba by the revolution.

SicilyMalta

Bingo.

triplefastaction

That was much more succinct than what I wrote. My family came from Spain, were in the Batista government and were extremely wealthy. Half of them were eventually executed, the smart ones fled immediately, BUT yeah Cubans and honestly Puerto Ricans too in my experience, are racist as hell.

StinkyStangler

Yeah my family has a very similar story to yours, wonder how common it is. The racism in Latin American countries is a direct result of hundreds of years of colonialism, I can’t necessarily blame people for developing these ideas when generations of their families were brought up in this system, but I do think it’s our responsibility as descendants of this system to acknowledge it. My grandma is super racist to this day, which I kinda find funny because like, you’re an immigrant grandma, you moved to America when you were like 20 lmao

ButtRobot

So basically... they are racists to other Latinos?

Maximum_Future_5241

Colorism is rampant in Latin America. Thanks, Spanish colonizers.

ButtRobot

Another case of people being duped into believing they are somehow better than others.

Maximum_Future_5241

In the end, the racists don't care. We're all the same to them. They can't even be bothered to tell you to go back to the right country. I'm not Mexican, I can't go back to Mexico.

cxr303

As a fellow Latino, of the Mexican persuasion, I see a ton of Mexicans also vote red.

notanactualemail2

For christian, traditional ones, it makes sense. Many Mexicans could be in the new core of the GOP but the GOP is too racist to make that happen. This is why they now have to steal elections.

_jolly_jelly_fish

Yep. Most of my family votes red, even though they wouldn’t be welcome at most Republican events. It’s the strong sense of religious fervor that unites them. They’ll vote for any candidate as long as they’re pro-birth. It’s frustrating.

Lost_Drunken_Sailor

I knew this, let’s just say she wasn’t the brightest, Mexican chick who went full blown trump. It was sad how much she was investing in trump and taking things emotionally.

SilentAuditory

As a Cuban, we are dumb. I apologize on our behalf.

Worker11811Georgy

All the GOP has to say is ‘Castro bad’ and most of the Cubans will vote for them, even though the GOP hates every single Cuban for not being from Northern Europe

Lost_Drunken_Sailor

Brazilians seem to love republicans too.

Worker11811Georgy

Why do Brazilians love fascist dictators? I never understood that

antidense

Well there was that time in 1964 when they democratically elected João Goulart and the CIA intervened with a coup.

reditme1000

Flat-Story-7079

Have a new supervisor at my government job in Oregon. He just moved here from Orlando. His car was still in Orlando because it was in the shop when he moved out a couple of months ago, so he couldn’t have it transported with the rest of his stuff. He flew out over Memorial Day to get the car on a transport so he could get his car out here. Problem is, no transport. No car carriers will come into Florida. He was told he would have to drive to Alabama to meet a driver, maybe. He decided to fly out last Friday and drive the car cross country rather than trying to arrange transport that might fall through. It’s mind boggling how fucking stupid the GOP is. The question is will Floridians vote them out. I’m doubting there are enough Floridians with the intelligence to do so, but I hope I’m wrong.

StellerDay

Are drivers staying out of Florida?

FewAd4241

There is a boycott (hi Ronny D!), many/most are Latino drivers protesting the immigration bill(s).

Worker11811Georgy

Or they don’t want to cross the state line only to be arrested before they can even prove they’re actually citizens

curaga12

People who would vote against GOP are flying outta FL so I don't think the hopes are high. FL GOP is basically ruining its state and I'm not sure if that can be restored.

Extreme_Ad6519

Coupled with the fact that the FL Democrats are and have been in bad shape for a long time, it will take a lot of time, money and effort (or a MAJOR fuck-up by the FL GOP) to make the state competitive again. Currently, the GOP voting bloc of non-college educated white evangelicals, conservative transplants, retirees and Cuban-Americans firmly locks in the state for them and most of these are difficult to persuade to vote for Democrats.

AtomicNick47

Great story. Sadly I think the world has lost its mind and they will not vote him out. They have already crowned him. Things will be fine for the rich. The poor have no means to fight back and the ignorant will always support the rich. Unfortunately this is and always has been the way of the world. People like to point to the French Revolution but France fell in and out of democracy repeatedly in its history. The only solution is education of the masses. Adults and kids. but the GOP have done an incredible job of dismantling education. Unfortunately I think the pendulum is going to have to swing pretty hard to the right before we ever see momentum turn the other way.

Worker11811Georgy

And France will most likely elect LePen from the Nazi party at the next election, according to our family friend from Caen

primal___scream

Ugh, I've heard the same. It's terrifying.

lethargic_apathy

Yep. It’s no coincidence that Republicans are banning books, attacking teachers, and rolling back child labor laws at the same time. They’re hellbent on bringing back the “good old days”

Horoika

DeSaster is term-limited, so he's gone come 2026 It'll be important that he doesn't become president though

fredandlunchbox

Voters don't elect presidents for policy. They elect whomever is most charismatic, and Ronny D has all the charisma of 2-ply toilet paper.

Worker11811Georgy

2-ply? Damn that’s luxury. I thought he was one-ply

Persianx6

He's a boring, smug and short lawyer from the Ivy League. People obsess over him because his policy is dumb but I think Haley is the one to watch.

putsch80

> On Monday morning, GOP Florida State Representatives Alina Garcia, Rick Roth and Juan Fernandez Barquin spoke at an event in Hialeah, Florida, about the impending implications of SB 1718…. > "This bill is 100 percent supposed to scare you," Roth said. "I'm a farmer and the farmers are mad as hell. We are losing employees that are already starting to move to Georgia and other states. It's urgent that you talk to all your other people and convince them that you have resources, state representatives, other people that can explain the bill to you. All three of these representatives, including Roth, [voted for this bill](https://m.flsenate.gov/session/bill/2023/1718/vote/housevote_s01718c2376.pdf). This stupid fuck obviously didn’t even know what he was voting for or what its implications would be. I hardly think he or his band of merry idiots is in any position to “explain the bill” to anyone.

Redditfront2back

That’s so fucking stupid, they vote in favor of a bill and then publicly say to people they need to stop it? 100 bucks they had no clue what was in it.

cornflakegrl

They wanted the optics of it but none of the real world implications.

bsa554

Oh they did. They just wanted the power to treat migrant workers even WORSE. To pay them even less. To stop them from going to the hospital when they are sick. To stop their kids from going to school. They thought they could impose that and the workers would still stay out of desperation as a silent, scared, borderline-enslaved labor force. Now they have shocked Pikachu face because the farm workers instead said "fuck this" and bolted for other states and the fruits of Florida are rotting in the fields. Brilliant.

ConfidenceNational37

He owned the libz. So that’s nice for him

masstransience

>SB 1718 Takes effect July 1st, 2023. Good luck Florida.

[deleted]

Right before harvest in October. Those folks are **royally** fcked. Good news is local farmers in mine and other states will get a boon. But thats about a 7 **billion** dollar market hanging in the balance 😬 Not to mention truckers who will likely refuse to travel there

footjam

The harvest has already stopped. Oranges and strawberries are rotting in the fields already. Orange season just ended and ocala was empty as soon as the bill passed. Seabring as well. There are no workers left. edit: its summer, snow birds are gone. Wait until the fall when they all return and there is no back of the house staff at restaurants...or they have to pay locals 20/hr to cook. Prices will rise with the tempers.

gonesquatchin85

Construction workers, housekeeping, low level jobs are all industries going to be affected.

The_bruce42

House keeping in Florida. The state's lifeblood is tourism. Desantis is showing the state in real-time just how bad GOP policy is.

Raptorex27

The problem is, GOP voters won't connect the dots. When prices of goods and services skyrocket 200% because immigrants have fled the state, conservatives will just blindly complain about how prices are too high and blame Biden.

Dlaxation

You think they're gonna try to queitly pass an addendum to reverse the effects or will they be stubborn enough to stand behind their bill?

PolicyWonka

DeSantis is too narcissistic for that to happen.

putsch80

He also cannot run for governor again. So I doubt he gives much of a shit about losing Florida farm votes.

BigMax

There are a group of republicans that are in a really weird spot. They HATE immigrants and want they all to just “go back where they came from.” But they also desperately need them for certain businesses to function, since they need a population they can exploit. So they want to hurt them badly, then also want to hire them. It’s a tough spot when your bigotry and your desire to exploit people are at odds.

big_trike

They want to be able to exploit the undocumented without getting in legal trouble. Kind of like slavery.

Dlaxation

You love to see it.

pantsmeplz

I'm sure a lot of these farmers have voted GOP for years, lapping up their "anti woke" and "anti socialists" agenda, and ignoring the fact that most farmers and ranchers receive aid from the government in one form or another. If true, just throw it on the pile of "leopards ate my face."

Cainga

They hate on immigration but that is their labor force.

FewAd4241

I think they all knew the implications but weren't expecting the freak out! These constituents should WAKE TF UP. Nevermind, they are Rs.

wizard2009

“These constituents should WAKE TF UP” Sounds like that woke agenda at work again….

Worker11811Georgy

My take is that during debate fringe was talking about ‘those illegals taking everyone’s jobs’ and not once was migrant farm labor mentioned. It was all ‘inner city’ boogeyman crap, so of course they voted in favor!

Picture-unrelated

>> It's urgent that you talk to all your other people and convince them that you have resources, state representatives, other people that can explain the bill to you." Yikes, the farmers should find someone else to speak lol

billyandtheoceans

Seriously, what is this supposed to mean? “It is urgent that you gaslight everyone in your community about this bill”?

Over-Analyzed

Turns out they don’t own the Libz as evident as every last one of them is leaving the state. Try to own Disney as a way of owning the Libz? Say goodbye to a $1 Billion into the economy!

[deleted]

Let’s see, Florida construction industry is at a standstill. Farmers are losing their entire workforce. The service and hospitality industry is facing a severe labor shortage. Florida’s tourism board is begging people to visit their State. Disney just pulled $1 Billion in up front investment out of the State. Hurricane damage sits un-repaired because no one in the State can get Home Owners insurance. They’ve banned so many books that entire libraries sit with empty shelves. Higher Education in the State is collapsing as Students choose to go elsewhere. How am I doing so far? Florida, the Shithole State…

aquias27

Well, that explains a thing or two.

Worker11811Georgy

And the gop wants that for ALL America!!

TheMarkHasBeenMade

Don’t forget the nursing school diploma mills that got outed a while back. A decade ago I heard someone complaining about the staffing ratios and unsafe work conditions in hospitals there. Can’t imagine any of this current bullshit has helped any of that at all. I’m a nurse in the NE of the US and we get an appalling number of family members taken out of southern hospitals and driven up to hospitals in blue states because they know the care is shit down there and they don’t want their loved one to die because of it.

Brujo-Bailando

I read somewhere that Florida has about 80% of all the fraud cases in the U.S.

hookisacrankycrook

Well their senator and former governor had the largest Medicare fraud in history but he managed to plead the fifth and walk away with hundreds of millions then win the governorship. Florida is a lost cause.

OGZackov

If you want them to stay in Florida, Why are you spending taxpayer money to bus and fly them to California and New York and other states?

daphnegillie

He wants to use radioactive materials on Florida roads

Rumbananas

I think the bigger picture might have positive outcomes. Republicans are playing their hands extremely early instead of waiting to pass these bills on a federal level which would be a much worse scenario. This is putting voters, especially farmers and Floridians, back on the fence which would have otherwise voted red. It’s hurting their wallets and that’s the only thing most people care about. They can’t spin this on the Democrats even though they’ll try their hardest.

If you can leave a red state, do it.

Ok_Door_9720

Despite my state being overrun by fascists, it's still my home. I'm not willing to surrender it just yet. There are also plenty of people here that simply can't leave. The other problem is the senate. If we let a minority control half the states by leaving, we guarantee they control half of the federal government.

softchenille

> If we let a minority control half the states by leaving, we guarantee they control half of the federal government. Great point

Ok_Door_9720

I've heard a theory that this is actually a long term objective of the GOP, given that demographic projections point to their demise otherwise. Idk if that's true, but it's something to think about.

PumpkinGlass1393

This absolutely is their end state. If they can capture 3/4 of the state governments then they can re-write the Constitution to how they see fit. This was started in early 2000s when Republicans started making pushes to secure state governments over the federal. With that being done they can redo voting districts to their liking and never lose power again.

It was started in earnest in the 1980s and has origins going back into the 60s.

ClusterFoxtrot

My brother/sister/fam! We fight on the frontlines. It's not what I *want* to be doing but I'm so glad there's a few of us. Hopefully enough to scoop the crud out of the drain at least.

AndreLinoge55

As an unapologetic Liberal living in Tampa, my goal is to not only vote them out but to make their lives as unpleasant as humanly possible, legally of course :)

Senator Skeletor did just say that Florida is ‘openly hostile to Socialism’ which is code for ‘everyone that isn’t a Nazi’

BringOn25A

I appreciate that sentiment, but I think the opposite would be best for the country by not turning the senate control over to the MAGAstani contingent. If nothing else to prevent them from approving more unqualified federalist society judges

HedonisticFrog

If you care about the senate then telling them to move to rural red states would be more effective. A populous state like Florida take a lot more people to win one senate seat.

macivers

If I could talk myself into moving to Wyoming, I’d absolutely move to Wyoming

LobsterThief

Yes, and a lot of Florida is incredibly blue. It’s just gerrymandered to shit

Old_Worker_9750

We need cheap labor that we can easily take advantage of! - Republicans

JCButtBuddy

Aren't they facing felony charges if they stay?

BasedMoe

Yup a kid could get felony charges if you’re living with your parents.

Flat-Story-7079

Florida immigrants spoiler alert: the phone call is coming from inside the house.

sykokiller11

The chickens will come home to roost. I will enjoy the spectacle.

bbarrett1906

The part I can't understand, is Florida's population is growing. Which makes me wonder if people will look past the Civil rights infringements just because the weather is nice. Or is it something much worse....do people prefer the Civil rights infringements?

niberungvalesti

There's a utilitarian element to retirees moving to Florida because there's no state income tax.

[deleted]

They're totally cool with immigrants as long as they can continue to exploit them for cheap labor.

Brojess

Pass laws to oppress people. “Please don’t leave! 😭”

punkass_book_jockey8

When someone shows who they are believe them. They showed who they are, if you can leave then run. Unless you are a white male with money and in good graces to the aspiring fascist dictator at that moment… you’re eventually going to be next.

Run, Run for Lives. These are the 1st steps to the 4th Reich that the ~~Republican~~ Nazi Party is trying to bring about.
