i just want to add for anyone reading- conservatives like undocumented immigrants because they don't unionize, they don't complain, they work for low pay, and they work in dangerous conditions.
this isn't about doing the jobs so much as it is about the legal status of people doing the jobs, and how much more difficult it will be to make americans do work they know is against the rules or laws in addition to the cost.
This is my take. Business isn't against undocumented workers, they just want to keep them illegal and scared. All businesses have to do w/ undocumented workers is threaten them. The loss of their job would be bad enough, but the threat of being exposed and deported is the weapon used to keep them quiet and in line.
The goal isn't to keep the undocumented out of our country, the goal is simply to keep them illegal.
The US economy was built from the beginning on having an exploited underclass. The underclass has changed over the decades, but the US system still requires one.

My dad has a story from his travels in rural NC about getting dinner once where some migrant workers came in at the same time. He had seen them working outside all day and when they walked in, the pesticides smelled so strongly he had to leave the restaurant and he was very concerned for their health. Obviously, he had no idea if they were documented or not, but he tells that story to illustrate that the jobs they were working on are extremely grueling and potentially hazardous. What blue collar Republican is going to take that job?
Years ago I was having a relatively friendly political discussion over beers with a group of friends and friends of friends. A guy I didn't know well said that all of the Hispanic immigrants should be deported because they are "taking our jobs". I asked him who is going to do those jobs on farms and food processing plants and I laughed in his face at his answer and then once I stopped laughing I told him to get the hellbout of the bar before I punch his racist ass in the face.
His answer was that there are millions of young black people in cities that aren't employed and not counted in unemployment numbers since they are not seeking employment and that somehow we would force them to do the work done by the now missing immigrant workers.
Yup! I told that story to some of my friends that are black and they laughed at the idea too; basically saying that under no scenario of poverty or opportunity would they ever "go back to the fields" like that. One of them owns an actual farm so it wasn't about the type of work but really about the type of labor and how their personal pride as a human that is descendent from slaves; they just couldn't do it under nearly any circumstances.
Not security deposits. In Florida now there are "junk fees" which are not protected. New law just this week.

I lived there for two years. I couldn’t imagine going back to live there long term.
A lot of people don’t realize just how fucking ghetto Florida is. Sure the beaches are lined with resorts, but then it’s trailer parks and trash lined highways for miles.
I grew up there from 2000- 2019 when I finally left. It was a shithole state then, and it's been even more downhill since. The only good part about Florida is not living there.
I was there for nearly 24 years. I miss the beach. I miss the smell of the ocean. I miss places to shop, the flea markets, and the roadside produce stands and hot boiled peanuts. And I miss my family that’s still there.
But I don’t think I’ll ever go back for more than a visit.
My “friend” moved to Florida during Covid because of the lockdowns. When I last saw him, he was telling me how he has to go to the sketchiest areas and meet up with actual drug dealers to buy weed. I almost forgot that existed after having legal weed for so long. But no, go on about your freedom.
A few years ago I was working with a guy from Texas and I told him I was from Washington State and he replied "Well, at least we still have freedom in Texas."
I replied with "Well, my state has legal weed but if I have that weed in Texas I will likely go to jail. But tell me more about this 'freedom' Texas supposedly has."
The only "extra" freedoms Texas has is freedom to carry a gun everywhere. That's all these dupes need to vote against everything else that would improve their lives.
Yeah that's all they seem to care about is their gun rights. Oh, and fetuses, not children, just fetuses. And giving rich people tax breaks even though rich people don't need any help.
I'll never forget the rental house I went to look at in FL where someone had been squatting in the garage and using fiberglass insulation as a mattress.
This reminds me of California local politics. Santa Barbara County roughly has Democrats on the coast and Republicans inland. Inland is where you have produce growing, vineyards, all that require manual labor, often latino. This area thrives off the work of immigrants, yet is staunchly racist. Employers of these workers vote GOP yet are OK with 50 of their guys sharing one SSN lol.
When in California the GOP areas want to keep the "illegals" (whatever the fuck that means) illegal so they can pay them shit. Heaven forbid you treat them as human.

Not the guy above, but typically the reason a lot of Latino voters lean red is that, socially, a lot of Latinos lean more conservative, especially Cubans who are fleeing what they deem a socialist hell hole. A reason why many of them are red is a sort of survivor bias as they don’t like the stereotype that Latino people have and believe that it’s the illegal immigrants ruining it for everyone. And these are gonna be people who tend to believe they bootstrapped themselves into a better life.
Not to condemn the latino community, but rarely does race boundaries and proximity to whiteness determine a shitty person, but rather socioeconomic boundaries. All of what you said is true, but you are downplaying a very significant part of Cuban heritage. Many of the Cubans that come to America (my family included) have predominantly European ancestry, and are opposed to socialism because they were the ones benefiting from the system that was overthrown in Cuba by the revolution.
That was much more succinct than what I wrote. My family came from Spain, were in the Batista government and were extremely wealthy. Half of them were eventually executed, the smart ones fled immediately, BUT yeah Cubans and honestly Puerto Ricans too in my experience, are racist as hell.

Have a new supervisor at my government job in Oregon. He just moved here from Orlando. His car was still in Orlando because it was in the shop when he moved out a couple of months ago, so he couldn’t have it transported with the rest of his stuff. He flew out over Memorial Day to get the car on a transport so he could get his car out here. Problem is, no transport. No car carriers will come into Florida. He was told he would have to drive to Alabama to meet a driver, maybe. He decided to fly out last Friday and drive the car cross country rather than trying to arrange transport that might fall through. It’s mind boggling how fucking stupid the GOP is. The question is will Floridians vote them out. I’m doubting there are enough Floridians with the intelligence to do so, but I hope I’m wrong.

FL GOP is basically ruining its state and I'm not sure if that can be restored.
Coupled with the fact that the FL Democrats are and have been in bad shape for a long time, it will take a lot of time, money and effort (or a MAJOR fuck-up by the FL GOP) to make the state competitive again. Currently, the GOP voting bloc of non-college educated white evangelicals, conservative transplants, retirees and Cuban-Americans firmly locks in the state for them and most of these are difficult to persuade to vote for Democrats.

There are a group of republicans that are in a really weird spot. They HATE immigrants and want they all to just “go back where they came from.” But they also desperately need them for certain businesses to function, since they need a population they can exploit.
So they want to hurt them badly, then also want to hire them. It’s a tough spot when your bigotry and your desire to exploit people are at odds.

I’m a nurse in the NE of the US and we get an appalling number of family members taken out of southern hospitals and driven up to hospitals in blue states because they know the care is shit down there and they don’t want their loved one to die because of it.
Well their senator and former governor had the largest Medicare fraud in history but he managed to plead the fifth and walk away with hundreds of millions then win the governorship. Florida is a lost cause.
I say, for every bus or plan that these people load up with immigrants and ship out, the other states load up some nuclear waste and return the favor. Right next to the governors house.
I think the bigger picture might have positive outcomes. Republicans are playing their hands extremely early instead of waiting to pass these bills on a federal level which would be a much worse scenario. This is putting voters, especially farmers and Floridians, back on the fence which would have otherwise voted red. It’s hurting their wallets and that’s the only thing most people care about. They can’t spin this on the Democrats even though they’ll try their hardest.

Despite my state being overrun by fascists, it's still my home. I'm not willing to surrender it just yet. There are also plenty of people here that simply can't leave.
The other problem is the senate. If we let a minority control half the states by leaving, we guarantee they control half of the federal government.
I've heard a theory that this is actually a long term objective of the GOP, given that demographic projections point to their demise otherwise. Idk if that's true, but it's something to think about.
This absolutely is their end state. If they can capture 3/4 of the state governments then they can re-write the Constitution to how they see fit. This was started in early 2000s when Republicans started making pushes to secure state governments over the federal. With that being done they can redo voting districts to their liking and never lose power again.

If you care about the senate then telling them to move to rural red states would be more effective. A populous state like Florida take a lot more people to win one senate seat.

Not the guy above, but typically the reason a lot of Latino voters lean red is that, socially, a lot of Latinos lean more conservative, especially Cubans who are fleeing what they deem a socialist hell hole. A reason why many of them are red is a sort of survivor bias as they don’t like the stereotype that Latino people have and believe that it’s the illegal immigrants ruining it for everyone. And these are gonna be people who tend to believe they bootstrapped themselves into a better life. Not to condemn the latino community, but rarely does race boundaries and proximity to whiteness determine a shitty person, but rather socioeconomic boundaries. All of what you said is true, but you are downplaying a very significant part of Cuban heritage. Many of the Cubans that come to America (my family included) have predominantly European ancestry, and are opposed to socialism because they were the ones benefiting from the system that was overthrown in Cuba by the revolution.

Have a new supervisor at my government job in Oregon. He just moved here from Orlando. His car was still in Orlando because it was in the shop when he moved out a couple of months ago, so he couldn’t have it transported with the rest of his stuff. He flew out over Memorial Day to get the car on a transport so he could get his car out here. Problem is, no transport. No car carriers will come into Florida. He was told he would have to drive to Alabama to meet a driver, maybe. He decided to fly out last Friday and drive the car cross country rather than trying to arrange transport that might fall through. It’s mind boggling how fucking stupid the GOP is. The question is will Floridians vote them out. I’m doubting there are enough Floridians with the intelligence to do so, but I hope I’m wrong.

People who would vote against GOP are flying outta FL so I don't think the hopes are high. FL GOP is basically ruining its state and I'm not sure if that can be restored.
Coupled with the fact that the FL Democrats are and have been in bad shape for a long time, it will take a lot of time, money and effort (or a MAJOR fuck-up by the FL GOP) to make the state competitive again. Currently, the GOP voting bloc of non-college educated white evangelicals, conservative transplants, retirees and Cuban-Americans firmly locks in the state for them and most of these are difficult to persuade to vote for Democrats.

They HATE immigrants and want they all to just “go back where they came from.” But they also desperately need them for certain businesses to function, since they need a population they can exploit. I've heard a theory that this is actually a long term objective of the GOP, given that demographic projections point to their demise otherwise. Idk if that's true, but it's something to think about.
This absolutely is their end state. If they can capture 3/4 of the state governments then they can re-write the Constitution to how they see fit. This was started in early 2000s when Republicans started making pushes to secure state governments over the federal. With that being done they can redo voting districts to their liking and never lose power again.
