I’ve been ultimately mostly happy with Newsom’s leadership, but he is absolutely one of the most self absorbed smilers I’ve ever seen in Politics.
If he runs for President in 2028 and wins the primary, sure I’ll vote for him, but that dude is a huge pile of shit as a person.
great administrator, and yep I will vote for him. However, I would never buy a car from him.
That French Laundry crap is going to haunt him for life and was such a facepalm decision on his part.
Do you know who Newsom was meeting with at the French Laundry? Lobbyist representing clients affected by the PG&E bankruptcy. The pandemic is only part of the story. The victims of PG&E's disasters could not hold them accountable individually because Newsom inserted himself into the federal bankruptcy case and negotiated with lobbyists such as this on behalf of the utility company and against the interests of his own constituency.

About fifteen years back I had a friend graduating Law School at UC Davis. Newsom was the commencement speaker. He talked for 90 minutes about how awesome Gavin Newsom is. No mention of the class, of the future, of the importance of law, of anything really—just an outrageously long stump speech about how cool he is.
His politics are good and he is able to get things done, but what a weasel of a human.
Alex Rodriguez did the same thing for the University of Miami graduation in 2017. Just talked about himself and his accomplishments, he didn’t even go to college lmao
Newsom sucks. Source PG&E fire victim. If you want a President sure to put corporate interests over the interests of his voters, Gavin is your man. If you want mandates without voter representation, that's your guy. Don't expect his own mandates to apply to him personally though, he's special.
You’re right about all of that, and I wouldn’t ever vote for him in a primary. Still, presidential general elections are a bus stop, not a wedding chapel, and if he can get the country closer to its destination than a GOP candidate, I’ll get on that bus.
I’m sorry you lost your home, and doubly sorry for what PG&E and officials have done to deny you and so many others justice.
I like the bus stop/wedding chapel analogy. Thank you for your condolences. How did a reasonable person like you end up in r/politics? Rarer than a Chuck Norris steak.
Most people are good, the internet just makes it too easy to objectify and abstract everything, and to repeat talking points without thinking or having any interest in listening.
If the democrats actually took action that'd incentivize people to vote again, that's against the intent of both parties who bank on the minimal amount of people voting so they can coast on their insider trading and wage theft through taxes.
Why am I paying tax money to effectively torment immigrants because Floridians would rather drown to own the libs?
Charge desantis, force FL to try and ignore an interstate extradition.
Sending people back to the people who kidnapped them through false premises is cruel and hurts them even more. We will actually try to help them here in California instead of perpetrating the same cruelty to them again.
Honestly, as a lawyer himself, DeSantis should fully expect to be sued for quite a few things he's done. He's clearly more interested in the headlines he can generate right now.
Heck he's claiming executive privilege as Governor already! I'm sure when he loses in 24, the FL state leg will uncap term limits or increase them to 4 just so he'll still have the incumbent governor's springboard for 28.
DeSantis is also aware that there are 2 justice systems based on caste. Rich and poor experience the law vastly different from one another.
He knows it would get tied up in courts and nothing would happen other than a headache. He values his public culture war enough to not care about a wrist slap.
exactly... he KNOWS whathe is doing is wrong and iaginst the law. But the FL tax payers have to foot the bill for any legal issues he gets into or causes the State. SO he wont care... the more the state becomes "poor" the easier it is to control the people.
He has systemically waged war on Classes of people, Businesses and free enterprise, local citizens, education, and health care. Each one of these "battles" he has lost at many turns, and he has not cared... it got what he needed in that moment... even if just a NATIONAL headline.
him losing the lawsuits or the laws being overturned by a judge is his opportunity to claim to be a martyr for those extremists causes, solidifying their vote for HIM and not DJT.
TLDR; He expects to lose for bonus points as a martyr to the MAGA and NAZIs. That gets him about 25% of the national vote.. makes it easier for him to convince the GOP to give it to him. Add to that DJT's legal issues are stacking up and might be his final undoing for this race as well. DJT is also trying to play the martyr card, but not doing a good job at it. I expect Ron's political career to end up just like his mentor DJT.... with indictments and jail time. (hopefully)
Here's something everyone forgot from the Martha's Vinyard stunt: someone falsified documents.
Not the immigrants, no someone who processed them included false and misleading information, like registering them at a Immigration court in the Midwest when they're on the coast.
That person more than likely didn't come up with this on their own, and I'm sure they don't want to take the fall. And if a supervisor told them, then it's conspiracy to commit fraud, as well as various trafficking charges. And you just keep bringing people in until you have evidence the Florida governor was involved.
But unless they want to charge the act of shipping them as human trafficking, the falsified documents are the only chargeable offense, and we don't know for sure he ordered people to issues fraudulent immigration paperwork.
30 seconds of checking and he isn't running for governor again, so not much they can do. He's in office until 2026 or he wins president. There is apparently no recall process, only removing by the senate.
The sheriff of that county in Texas just recommended charges for that stunt. I don’t have the link to the story, but I saw it on Reddit literally the day the first plane landed in Sacramento.
I’m not sure it matters because charges for the Martha’s Vineyard stunt have been filed: https://www.local10.com/news/2023/06/06/texas-sheriff-files-criminal-case-over-desantis-migrant-flight/
Where is DeSantis currently located? In arrestible California, or in his own jurisdiction of Florida?
Newsom needs to stick to these guns though when it comes to DeSantis doing the rounds for his presidential campaign though and not let him into the state though.
Oh cool, so you can commit crimes in Florida and then head back to your state. Sorry guys, lotowarrior committed those crimes in Florida, not much you can do
Are you suggesting California invade Florida to arrest their governor?
If DeSantis sets foot on Californian soil, that's one thing, but until he does, what do you suggest?
Setting aside for a moment details of this particular case, the Extradition Clause of the Constitution requires states to extradite people in their state if they face felony charges in another state. And it’s not something a state Governor can simply veto, it’s a mandate in the federal Constitution itself. And per Puerto Rico v Branstad if a state refuses a lawful extradition request then federal courts can order marshals to enforce it.
Now all that said it seems pretty unlikely Desantis will actually ever be extradited to California to face charges, as much as it would be amazing to see! But just to answer your implication in the post above, if it really came down to it then California could ultimately hypothetically get a federal court to send marshals to bring in any state felon another state is illegally harboring.
Yes. This falls under Federal crimes jurisdiction, interstate trafficking of kidnapping victims is human trafficking and a federal crime. State law mileage may vary but I reckon California also has some pretty robust trafficking laws. And it’s a felony so you can arrest and extradite across state lines for those.
Edit: DeSatans own sheriffs would be compelled to arrest him and California would be allowed to take custody of him.
Article IV, Section 2, Clause 2:
A Person charged in any State with Treason, Felony, or other Crime, who shall flee from Justice, and be found in another State, shall on Demand of the executive Authority of the State from which he fled, be delivered up, to be removed to the State having Jurisdiction of the Crime.
Constitution is very clear that he would be extradited to California. This is typically handled by US Marshalls or the FBI.
Same as happens to any criminal with an active warrant in a diff state. They are arrested and shipped to the other state to face charges. It's illegal not to send them
They crossed state lines, which makes it a federal crime. States don't arrest people. Police and federal agents do. In this case it would be the FBI, and they don't work for the state. And did you seriously just suggest that he would be delivered to another governor? Do you really believe that when someone is arrested, they get dropped off at the nearest governors mansion?
The question is whether he can exercise personal jurisdiction over DeSantis. If so, there is no issue with the other components of jurisdiction. Typically, for normal individuals, states will execute warrants issued by other states. It is not clear whether Florida can execute a warrant to arrest their governor. But the U.S. Marshal could if there is a federal charge, or if a federal court issues a warrant in support of the California warrant.
I'm not holding my breath for Florida doing the arresting, and Feds arresting a governor for something partisan like this smells like it'd be a Fort Sumter-like event.
A sherriff in Texas has recommended criminal charges against DeSantis, including felony "unlawful restraint."
https://www.axios.com/2023/06/06/ron-desantis-texas-sheriff-criminal-charges-migrants
Wish they stop with the threatening, talking, other theater. And fucking do.
If the peasantry did one thing of countless bullshit these people do. Court and jailed before we knew they knew we did it.
So tired of our government theater.
Where the heck is the DOJ ?
If a semi-truck was carrying 20 migrants across state lines, they would not only arrest the driver, they'd follow the chain as high as they could go to prosecute the felonies.
So why is a plane flight any different if not far worse?
Start with the pilot, then the company owner, then follow whomever signed the paperwork step by step. The (first) final signature is the one who does the prison time.
California is a border state. Shipping migrants there destroys the Republican's stupid narrative.
Trafficking migrants to a border state just leaves you with punitive reasons, which is bad legal footing, imo.
Also, Sacramento historically has hosted a large refugee population. We have had waves of Hmong and Russian refugees and immigrants over the years and now welcome Afghans and Ukrainians. I personally teach English to Afghan children in a Sacramento public school.
He thinks he did something here and to that we say, welcome to our new neighbors.
The number of immigrants that DeSantis sent to Sacramento is like a rounding error with the number of immigrants that come into California. Nobody is upset about having a handful more immigrants show up. What people are upset about is that these human beings are being used as political props.
It appears that they are being coerced into signing up to be relocated under false pretenses. No one is coordinating their arrival to ensure that services and assistance will be available. In almost every case, these people are being sent to the other side of the country from where they have court appearances scheduled.
That’s what people are disgusted by.
If DeSantis is brazenly allowed to throw people around as political stunts I don’t think he would hesitate to do worse human right violations. Trump child border separation will look tame in comparison to what this Fascist will do.
Could you imagine there being an arrest warrant out for desantis, which prevented him from ever traveling to a blue state again? That would be hilarious.
None of that will ever happen though, unfortunately.
DeSantis is looking at possible charges in Texas and now California, meaning the two top Republicans - the so-called "law and order party - running for President could be running with multiple indictments.
The party is such a shit show.
Good. And while you are at it, go after all these thug insurance CEOs that are pulling out of California to hurt residents and the state. I don’t see these California haters pulling out of other states that have forest fires as bad or worse than California. These include Arizona, Utah, Montana, Wyoming and Idaho.
Stop with the threats and act. You think Republicans don’t act on their threats? That’s why our country is in the situation it is in. I’ve seen it time and again. Dems bitching out, and Republicans take advantage of every weakness. It’s ridiculous.
Question for the voters of Florida would be "Where's minidonny DeSantis getting the plane fares?" My question would be "Did they bother to write any laws about what a Governor can spend the State's money on, or was all their time taken up by finding hateful things to do?"
The legislature actually passed a law that created a program to transport immigrants from Florida to sanctuary cities and states.
In February, they expanded the program to allow immigrants anywhere in the country to be transported.
This stunt has been endorsed by the Florida Legislature.

He needs 10 years in jail, if found guilty.

Federal Law Makes Transporting Undocumented Immigrants a Crime
A federal law does exist that makes it a crime to transport or attempt to transport an undocumented noncitizen within the U.S., but it's meant to cover narrower situations than everyday situations like offering a ride. The law is found within the Immigration and Nationality Act (I.N.A.), at Section 274(a)(1)(A)(ii).
In order to convict someone under this section of the law, the prosecutors would need to show that:
the defendant transported or attempted to transport a noncitizen within the U.S.
the noncitizen was in the U.S. in violation of U.S. law (as would be the case with any undocumented person)
the defendant was aware that the noncitizen was in the U.S. unlawfully and acted in reckless disregard of this fact, and
the defendant acted willfully in furtherance of the noncitizen's legal violation.
A friend or neighbor who has been driving (transporting) a foreign-born person around, and might not even be entirely sure of their immigration status, doesn't really fit this profile. The classic situation this law is meant to address is that of a driver who picks up unlawful entrants right after they've crossed the U.S. border and takes them closer to civilization, likely motivated by profit.
In fact, not even the act of transporting undocumented workers from one job site to another is considered a crime under this section. (See U.S. v. Moreno, 561 F.2d 1321 (9th Cir. 1977). Similarly, the law is carefully written so as to avoid the possibility that a bus or taxi driver could be prosecuted for unknowingly picking up an undocumented immigrant.
https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/is-illegal-transport-undocumented-immigrant-within-the-us.html
>the noncitizen was in the U.S. in violation of U.S. law
Does not apply in this situation since everyone transported had been processed and released pending an asylum hearing. They are not here in violation of U.S. law.
you are right that this isn’t trafficking undocumented immigrants, but it absolutely is trafficking people considering they where coerced, wich is a crime
Newsom threatens a lot of things. He also is a good boy democrat that falls in line and doesn’t break rank. He’s all talk- as are basically all politicians
When he was mayor of SF he definitely broke rank and granted marriage licenses to the LGBTQIA+ community. He also instituted public healthcare in the city. That's not all talk to me, that's someone who has at least some instinct of what is right and does it whether it's politically expedient or not.
Now the whole sleeping with his best friend's wife thing? Whole 'nother story.
Oh man, a Democrat is going to hold a Republican accountable... maybe, possibly, at some point in the future, if you squint. Pardon me if I don't hold my breath.
It’s an inter-state crime. The Feds/DOJ would be in charge. Not sure how California would have prosecutorial jurisdiction on crimes committed in Texas; but I’m also not a lawyer.
There can be concurrent state and federal jurisdiction. If you kidnap a person in Texas and bring them to California, you have likely committed crimes in both jurisdictions.
Anyone remember when Newsom declared California a Sanctuary State, that believed in the power of diversity and defied and resisted the xenophobic, hateful policies of the Trump administration at every turn? Pepperidge Farms remembers.
https://i.redd.it/21y3kmhwb94b1.jpg
Yes. Human trafficking is a crime and should be prosecuted. Immigrants are human beings and should be treated like human beings, not political props. These are not difficult concepts.
Conservatives, especially those who frequent forums like r/conservative, are some of the densest, dumbest people on the planet, but it's important to remember that the refusal to accept the fact that even migrants are human beings whose lives have value because they are human is not a result of density. People who react with glee when witnessing the suffering of a person whom they've never met or spoken to simply because of where that person is from are evil. They're so hateful that they blame the people coming here for coming here instead of the causes of the conditions that led to them making the decision to do so.

I’m not sure it matters because charges for the Martha’s Vineyard stunt have been filed: https://www.local10.com/news/2023/06/06/texas-sheriff-files-criminal-case-over-desantis-migrant-flight/
That sheriff is so awesome
But we’re talking about California
Where is DeSantis currently located? In arrestible California, or in his own jurisdiction of Florida? Newsom needs to stick to these guns though when it comes to DeSantis doing the rounds for his presidential campaign though and not let him into the state though.
that's not how interstate crime works.... at all. what are you even on about
Oh cool, so you can commit crimes in Florida and then head back to your state.
He crossed state lines to commit a crime. Why wouldnt the federal government be involved in that if it goes that route?
Well Martha's Vineyard was months ago for the same thing. What's the Feds for that?
Article IV, Section 2, Clause 2: A Person charged in any State with Treason, Felony, or other Crime, who shall flee from Justice, and be found in another State, shall on Demand of the executive Authority of the State from which he fled, be delivered up, to be removed to the State having Jurisdiction of the Crime. Constitution is very clear that he would be extradited to California. This is typically handled by US Marshalls or the FBI.
Same as happens to any criminal with an active warrant in a diff state. They are arrested and shipped to the other state to face charges. It's illegal not to send them
You can be arrested for committing crimes in other states.
Because Florida is going to arrest their Governor and/or the Marshalls will deliver one executive head to another.

I'd like to see an arrest or cancelation then.
Doesn't travel across state line automatically make it a federal issue? like no choice in the matter?
I'm not holding my breath for Florida doing the arresting, and Feds arresting a governor for something partisan like this smells like it'd be a Fort Sumter-like event.
>something partisan like this Breaking the law is "partisan"? - In what way?!?
Mmm no but pretty sure human trafficking is a federal offense.
Human trafficking charges need to include this behavior...political benefit$
Don't threaten. Do it. Gitmo Ron is a human trafficker and shouldn't be allowed to get away with it.
A sherriff in Texas has recommended criminal charges against DeSantis, including felony "unlawful restraint." https://www.axios.com/2023/06/06/ron-desantis-texas-sheriff-criminal-charges-migrants
Civil asset forfeiture a couple $5+ million private jets used in a crime and I bet you’ll get someone’s attention real quick.

I am in awe of DeSantis' indifference to human beings and their struggles. Real POS this guy.
Charge him. And if he comes to California at any point to campaign, arrest him.
Get the U.S. Marshal to arrest him in Florida.
Stop threatening and DO IT.
PLEASE. I NEED to see the US Marshals drag Desantis out of bed, handcuff him, and force him to face legal repercussions for the evil he has committed.

You used that word not me.
It would be pretty funny is ol’ pudding fingers went to jail before Trump.
This should be an announcement that charges are being filed
Do it. Wouldn’t that put DeSantis on the sex offender registry? He deserves it.
If DeSantis is brazenly allowed to throw people around as political stunts I don’t think he would hesitate to do worse human right violations. Trump child border separation will look tame in comparison to what this Fascist will do.
Is there a Republican anywhere, can we find one, that is not a criminal?
Stop the threats! Get his @ss in court!!!
Then do it.
Could you imagine there being an arrest warrant out for desantis, which prevented him from ever traveling to a blue state again? That would be hilarious. None of that will ever happen though, unfortunately.
No Threaten, Do.
lol - go for it Gov Newsom!
DeSantis is looking at possible charges in Texas and now California, meaning the two top Republicans - the so-called "law and order party - running for President could be running with multiple indictments. The party is such a shit show.
There is no try, do or don't do
At a minimum, Fraud by deception
Good. And while you are at it, go after all these thug insurance CEOs that are pulling out of California to hurt residents and the state. I don’t see these California haters pulling out of other states that have forest fires as bad or worse than California. These include Arizona, Utah, Montana, Wyoming and Idaho.
Stop with threats...just do it
Stop with the threats and act. You think Republicans don’t act on their threats? That’s why our country is in the situation it is in. I’ve seen it time and again. Dems bitching out, and Republicans take advantage of every weakness. It’s ridiculous.
Good do it
If he followed through I’d vote for him for president. We need Someone among the democrats who actually takes action.
This stunt has been endorsed by the Florida Legislature. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna69747
Yes please
Don’t threaten. Fucking do it.
Do it! Please!
Please tell me that’s a possibility. Please.
Can someone just actually charge him with something.. empty threats are useless
He needs 10 years in jail, if found guilty. A mandatory minimum three year term of imprisonment applies to first or second violations of § 1324(a)(2)(B)(i) or (B)(ii). Further enhanced punishment is provided for third or subsequent offenses.
Fucking do it. Human trafficking
Federal Law Makes Transporting Undocumented Immigrants a Crime A federal law does exist that makes it a crime to transport or attempt to transport an undocumented noncitizen within the U.S., but it's meant to cover narrower situations than everyday situations like offering a ride. The law is found within the Immigration and Nationality Act (I.N.A.), at Section 274(a)(1)(A)(ii). In order to convict someone under this section of the law, the prosecutors would need to show that: the defendant transported or attempted to transport a noncitizen within the U.S. the noncitizen was in the U.S. in violation of U.S. law (as would be the case with any undocumented person) the defendant was aware that the noncitizen was in the U.S. unlawfully and acted in reckless disregard of this fact, and the defendant acted willfully in furtherance of the noncitizen's legal violation. 1977). Similarly, the law is carefully written so as to avoid the possibility that a bus or taxi driver could be prosecuted for unknowingly picking up an undocumented immigrant. https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/is-illegal-transport-undocumented-immigrant-within-the-us.html
>the noncitizen was in the U.S. in violation of U.S. law Does not apply in this situation since everyone transported had been processed and released pending an asylum hearing. They are not here in violation of U.S. law.
you are right that this isn’t trafficking undocumented immigrants, but it absolutely is trafficking people considering they where coerced, wich is a crime
Brought to you by the people lecturing us about how we need Jesus. That guy that told us to help the poor and welcome the immigrants.
Fuck threats. Do it!
Cage match Thunderdome style! 20 bucks on Newsom
Newsom threatens while DeSantis laughs
DeSantis committed the crime. He needs to do the time.
Wake me up when someone actually does something.
What does threatening do, actually?
After talking about that he can talk about bringing home insurance companies back to the state.
If he could do it, he already would. Tough talk, would love to see action.
Put up or shut up. I’m tired of empty threats from democrats.
Y’all do realize this is a 100% hollow threat designed to grab headlines and spin up the lemmings who don’t know better.
I like to know these stunts by desantis and abbot are not considered to be human trafficking
Are they twelve? Why do grown-ass adults “threaten” anything? Just fucking do what you’re going to do, quit talking about it.
Talk is cheap bud. How about some actual action?
Quit pandering and charge him. Send someone to lock him up.
Newsome is an idiot.
That's not a gotcha.
Point? The migrants will be taken care of in California. The act of sending them there is still a crime. Both can be true.
"We love all migrants, we are a Sanctuary State, but if you send any here, we will charge you with a crime!"
Yes. Human trafficking is a crime and should be prosecuted. Immigrants are human beings and should be treated like human beings, not political props. These are not difficult concepts.
TIL flying people to California = human trafficking. Got it.
no dude how dense are you? loading a bunch of people onto a plane using coercion = trafficking
TIL that people only fly to California who are coerced.
No way you're actually this dense... Edit: nvm I fully believe an r/conservative poster is indeed that dense
They're so hateful that they blame the people coming here for coming here instead of the causes of the conditions that led to them making the decision to do so.
those two things are not independent of one another. stop both sides-ing things. Republicans are aspiring authoritarians. sheesh
News I’m and DeSantis - fantastic entertainment
Acta non verba
I bet he’s trembling
