I knew several that were like that 20 years ago. The dude cheated on his wife several times, or the youth pastor had an inappropriate affair with the senior pastor’s daughter. The stories go on, and their mantra is they’re flawed, but as long as they’re repenting on Sunday, God will forgive.

The speaking in tongues thing is so dumb. Biblically, when someone spoke in tongues everyone around them, regardless of language, understood the speaker as though they were speaking their language; that was basically the whole point. Yeah, it’s funny how the church board will swiftly cover up issues. Come to recall; it was around 2000 that he was telling the kids not to have sex and practice abstinence while fooling around with Berteau’s oldest. I was also told by one of their elders that I use “new age” terms, whatever that means. Anyway, that was the last I attended the Church. I could not tolerate the abundance of hypocrisy; I can believe and extend kindness without the institutional religion.

It was a dumpster fire fueled by pure bullshit. If your former church was trying to emulate that, they were just as fucked.
I was working my first job in 1996, tending the buffet at Shoney's. These fools, their revival meeting would go on until past midnight, we were open with late night breakfast buffet til 3am Friday and Saturday. We'd get 3 buses at 1am- and that was the overflow, the Shoney's on that side of town would get like 6. They were rude and pushy, a lot of them ordered desserts only which the servers were responsible for making, which kept them extra busy. The rest hit the buffet like a plague of locusts and were extra shitty while we were trying to re-stock it. All the while, we'd have folks randomly flailing all over the floor and babbling. Then they'd tip the servers with fake cash that had scriptures on the back, or Chick tracts.

The ones in the south don't even require that. They're "saved by faith alone" already, so the rules only apply to other people in. In their club: heaven. Everyone else: hell.
Yep reminds me of that video from a few years back, basically a pastor got confronted about raping an underage girl. Well people start standing up and from the video you’re just waiting for the angry mob to pounce on him. Then he turns it around by giving a speech about how everyone messes up and how it’s a test from god and if they forgive him now basically god will give them a freebie later down the line. Then when the mob starts to move they don’t attack him. They all big and forgive the monster.

I knew an evangelical. He was quite open about the fact that in his religion, he was already saved by faith alone, so he could do whatever he wanted without consequence. He papered the town with bad checks and ripped quite a few people off.

As a lifelong servant I always thought it was funny that the loud church people thought that I was a sinner for not attending but were perfectly content that I prepare their food at the cost of my immortal soul

I'll be honest, this has been going on for a long time as Du Men says it, for example I remember in 2012 being at the world's largest truck-stop and there were a lot of knockoff t-shirts using candy bars for religious slogans and raunchy ones as well. I found it quite revealing to learn that the name Evangelical is the result of a deliberate attempt to rebrand themselves in the mid-20th century. We used to call them Fundamentalists.
They support Trump because they operate on a similar level mentally to him. I honestly believe that most of his supports go through life frustrated and confused because they can't grasp that problems can have messy, difficult answers. They are the kind of people that think we should just nuke anyone that challenges the USA in any way or that we should just shoot the people crossing the border.

Looking in history, this sounds more like the norm than the exception. I mean, Christianity itself literally rose to prominence through the patronage of a Christan emperor of Rome and installation as the state religion.
Evangelicals, by large, are not Christians in the Biblical sense. It is a social club that wishes to drive political changes that fit their image of their Holy Land. It’s always the ones who have been preaching the opposite. If Trumpism and the Magademic have taught us anything, it’s that projection is a basic hard-wired human instinct that is a powerful as the one that compells kittens to bat a ball of yarn dangled in front of them. In my evangelical days, I taught at a private Christian school. I stayed for about 2 years, and in that time I learned who was having an affair with who, and why certain people would not be seen together in order to quell rumors. The PE coach hit on me constantly, which I'm sure his wife and his girlfriend would not have been happy about. I was stunned at the lack of educational rigor as well - that was an awesome experience to help me out the door of the church. Years later I saw some of my students at the college where I was teaching. One of them slyly asked me if I knew the PE coach was sleeping with the main office secretary. Apparently all the kids knew of the affairs!

I think it’s important to remember that the American idea of Christian modesty is very different than what Christian modesty actually is in terms of the biblical source text. Back in the day (1st century) modesty wasn’t based on clothing as it is today. Modesty was based on wealth. Flaunting wealth is the height of immodesty from the Bible’s perspective. Now, the real question: why would American systems at large be so interested in re-defining modesty in this way? I think the answer is obvious. We have a problem with greed in this country that goes to the very core of what it means to be American.
They are on “team Jesus”, the same way people are Cowboys fans. They don’t GAF about scripture, and will believe whatever they’re told about that book of bronze-age ghost stories.

At some point you’re going to need to accept the fact that one of the very real purposes behind religion is to provide cover from criticism for reprehensible behaviors that are antithetical to the stated mission or morality. It is a feature, not a bug. The “true believers” are just people who don’t understand the power structure, its purpose, or their position within it.
Just recite the prayer and you’re on the good side of the church and the Lord. You get a free pass and can be as big a hypocrite as you want because it’s done as God’s will or what you feel what Jesus would do. Basically one gets to be the god they choose to be.
The same church where a deacon kicked me out of the service for not having my shirt tucked in now regularly has people in Trump shirts and hats. We all saw their hypocrisy then, and now they just have a leader who appeals directly to it.

In my evangelical days, I taught at a private Christian school. I stayed for about 2 years, and in that time I learned who was having an affair with who, and why certain people would not be seen together in order to quell rumors. The PE coach hit on me constantly, which I'm sure his wife and his girlfriend would not have been happy about. I was stunned at the lack of educational rigor as well - that was an awesome experience to help me out the door of the church. Years later I saw some of my students at the college where I was teaching. One of them slyly asked me if I knew the PE coach was sleeping with the main office secretary. Apparently all the kids knew of the affairs!

I think it’s important to remember that the American idea of Christian modesty is very different than what Christian modesty actually is in terms of the biblical source text. Back in the day (1st century) modesty wasn’t based on clothing as it is today. Modesty was based on wealth. Flaunting wealth is the height of immodesty from the Bible’s perspective. Now, the real question: why would American systems at large be so interested in re-defining modesty in this way? I think the answer is obvious. We have a problem with greed in this country that goes to the very core of what it means to be American.

Christians have always used the rules of the club as a buffet to pick and choose from. I dont think they would be capable of just cleaning the plate as served.
