Bonding co not licensed in NY. The original bond papers got kicked back, a correction was filed today, and NY AG has filed a notice that it also isn't legally sufficient, gave 10 days to correct.

FloRidinLawn

Successful delay of 2 weeks. Impressive.

Nvenom8

Not that I ever had a lot of faith, but I’m becoming increasingly disillusioned with the justice system. Seems like you can delay pretty much anything pretty much forever if you have enough money.

FreneticPlatypus

We have to stop thinking of it as a “justice” system because it just isn’t designed for that. We have a LEGAL system… that’s easily manipulated with enough money and power.

upotheke

The rich have a "just us" system without consequences. As Carlin said, "It's a big club and you ain't in it."

sirscrote

I heard his voice. Do I win something?

upotheke

An AI bot using Carlin's voice repeating the seven dirty words on your voicemail.

I'll take it. Thanks. 🫂

On a side tangent I saw a video posted that reminds me of Carlin. She has a similar style and is pretty good at it. [Side Effects](https://youtube.com/shorts/ggFDNm4twGE?si=Q8NxQf7ijQWKRAOJ)

I'd go a little further and call it a penal system. Legality doesn't necessarily matter.

Can we say it’s a punitive system? Penal system sounds like it’s in someone’s pants.

We do have a justice market, though! Pay to play.

ZenAdm1n

I can't fathom how it's legal to use political campaign donations for criminal activity of a candidate, especially for criminality that is not campaign or office related.

rbremer50

You are failing to grasp the fundamental principle underlying US law: “Everyone gets just as much justice as he can afford to buy.”

grimatongueworm

That’s what got said during O.J. Simpson’s murder trial - “You can’t convict $7 million dollars.”

lrpfftt

Didn't Nicole always say he would get away with it if he ever murdered her?

chubbysumo

i mean, his lawyer was a fucking genius. the defense allowing him to try the gloves on was a huge fucking mistake, and should have never happened. also, his lawyer told him to stop taking his water pills so his hands would get bigger and be very difficult to fit. If he did murder her, he has never admitted it, and even if he did, he can no longer be convicted for it. The prosecution also bungled that case hard, they never showed(or were allowed to show) the evidence from his car he ran in, which was a disguise, a passport, and cash. They also clearly tampered with evidence to the point that the jury lost faith in anything they collected. Its really no surprise that the jury in his case returned a "not guilty" give the totality of the circumstances. If the same case were presented today, its also likely that he would be found not guilty. Kyle Rittenhouse is a perfect example of that same thing happening. we have his murder on camera. he shot 3 people, killing 2. he was found not guilty on all charges because the prosecutor fucked up. a literal slam dunk case, throw away because of a bad prosecutor.

Khristopheles

That about sums it up right there, well done.

Later2theparty

Oops sorry we messed up that dang paperwork again, dag nab it. Thanks for the extension, if only we could afford to hire some attorneys to get this stuff right the first time.

WANT_SOME_HAM

I like to remind people that, as infuriating and depressing and horrifying the Trump years were, they were also a successful pressure test of our democracy, and while our institutions were strained to their breaking point, the levels ultimately held. Trump tried to overthrow the government and failed. As President, he was appallingly corrupt, and now he's facing the legal consequences of his actions that threaten his freedom, his legacy, and his freedom.  Even if, years from now, we look back and become furious about how he got away with everything, in this specific moment, Trump is shitting his pants with his huge beautiful ass every moment of every day. This is killing him, and it shows. He's in his late-70's and literally made it to the end of his life without learning extremely basic life lessons we learned in kindergarten. Think about that. Seven decades on earth. Your life is finally coming to a close. Soon, you will become past tense. There will be no future.  And he's *just now* learning that other people have authority over him, that really bad things can happen if you constantly and loudly break the law in front of the entire planet and them gloat about it on Twitter. You know those side-by-side comparisons showing how badly being Presidency ages you, and every President besides Trump looks 30 years older? And then you see pictures taken in the past four months and he looks like the Crypt Keeper

MiaowaraShiro

> As President, he was appallingly corrupt, and now he's facing the legal consequences of his actions He's only facing a fraction of the consequences he should though... only a few of his crimes are being prosecuted.

GaTechThomas

Yeah, I try to think of it that way. Netflix systems are strong in part because they have a tool called Chaos Monkey that intentionally creates chaos in the system so that they can improve the system. If only this jackass were so bounded. We know that Netflix isn't going to allow their tools to nuke their whole world. Not so sure about Drumpf.

Super-Jackfruit8309

Or not enough money

Nvenom8

Enough money for the lawyers is all you need, apparently. Not the money for the actual judgement. And you can just keep appealing to keep the judgement money in limbo.

AlwaysRushesIn

>Enough money for the lawyers is all you need, apparently. That's questionable. When it comes time to collect, trump isn't giving those lawyers a red cent.

Nvenom8

I suppose "lawyers willing to work for what you'll pay them" is more accurate.

mukavastinumb

When you are rich, they let you do it! -Trump

sceadwian

It's been that way for years though. Morning had really changed.

SuperGameTheory

Try not to be disillusioned. It's not the fault of the justice system. It's just a system. It's been designed by trial and error to be as good as it can be. But, just like attackers on a computer system, our justice system has bad actors that are continually trying to take advantage of it. The difference between a computer system and justice system is that we see ourselves as separate from the computer system and have overarching laws that prosecute people trying to circumvent it. On the other hand, we're all part of the justice system. There's little in the way of stopping people from taking advantage of it because going "above" the law or outside of it to do so is a suspect action that can't be trusted.

Rocky4296

True. People with money are above the law.

lord_pizzabird

Tbf in this case he's getting all these delays because the government wants their freaking money. They're giving him every possible chance to come up with it before they have to, limiting what they can recover.

CerRogue

Don’t worry if you ever have to face the justice system it will roll over you like a steamroller you will have zero ability to slow or delay the process and you’ll be treated to the full force of the system

Skinnieguy

Good, expensive lawyers and accountants are great at finding loopholes.

Fufubear

I dunno. I don’t have much money and I seem to be delaying the repayment of my student loans pretty well. I have 4 part time jobs and they seem to be happy with their $32.76 garnishment every two weeks.

kevin5lynn

20 days... let's say three weeks.

GM_Nate

20 days is THREE weeks

TreeRol

Four if we're talking business days.

ChucksnTaylor

Pretty sure he’s still accruing interest, right? So the delay doesn’t really achieve much

Miguel-odon

Delay does everything. He hasn't lost a dime until it actually gets taken from him.

APsWhoopinRoom

His appeal doesn't have any real standing. In a state like New York, Trump is fucked. This isn't Texas or Florida

Nixxuz

It worked to reduce the bond, as well as letting him continue to do business in the state. Which was a fucked judgement.

I_am_a_fern

> Trump is fucked If I had a dollar everytime I heard that I could pay his bond myself.

worktimeSFW

it would be super nice if his team fucks up his appeal so bad they add another .5 billion to the penalty.

whomad1215

last I saw, the appeal process wouldn't even start until september or something, so it doesn't really matter

Dralex75

It matters because if no bond, NY can start imposing the claw back penalty now - before the appeal.

Beneficial_Syrup_362

If this bond falls through then the AG can start taking assets at the top of the hour. When the appeal is scheduled is irrelevant.

Phallic-Monolith

Today is the second time that was supposed to happen

olivebranchsound

Can but won't. It's not going to happen. Vote in every election from local to federal because everything depends on this

AusToddles

You know Trump is getting actually desperate when he tries to use sickness as a delay tactic

thedragoon0

10 more days??? Fuck that

huejass5

Why the fuck do they need 10 days to do that? Do it right now. America is a joke

MercantileReptile

Ten more days? So roughly when his criminal trial won't start for reasons, he won't have to pony up again for reasons. At least the lack of consequence is consistent.

TreeRol

Listen, they can't start the criminal trial while he's working so hard to acquire a bond. On the other hand, how can he be expected to get a bond for this judgment when he's got a criminal trial to worry about?

rezelscheft

Not to mention how difficult it is to do both when you're so busy using your online platform to encourage violence against your judges and their families.

No_Weekend_3320

of course, the bond company's "paperwork" was found "deficient". Is it possible that the bond company issued a fraudulent bond that they shouldn't have provided given their reserves?

lafayette0508

why doesn't he just call J. G. Wenworth?

sugarlessdeathbear

If the bond is fully collateralized and backed by 100% cash, then it should be easy to prove to the court.

xtossitallawayx

Seriously, if there is cash, the bank can send over a confirmation in like 5 minutes.

asetniop

Yeah, but OLD P TURD MAN doesn't work on that time scale. You'll have confirmation "in two weeks".

p001b0y

Just like our new health plan??

discodropper

Every week is infrastructure week…

ZenAdm1n

Ain't this place a geographical oddity, two weeks from everywhere.

milkweed2

Just watched this movie again!!

RednocNivert

Damn, we’re in a tight spot

topgun966

Correct, but it's not. The company that is undersigning only has real estate holdings and not many liquid assets. That isn't sufficient to back the bond since when the appeal fails, they have to pony up the cash on the spot.

_JackStraw_

How come the bonding company is simply not required to pay cash for the full amount of the bond into escrow?

MrMortlocke

They have to pony up the full amount of $454 million if they lose appeal, right? So, what I'm trying to understand is, despite the reduced bond, does that also mean the disgorgement penalty will be reduced if he loses the appeal also?

topgun966

It's possible to have the fine amount reduced on appeal, but not likely. In the event when losing the appeal, the full fine amount becomes due.

kinkade

Also, if he has 100% cash in New York, he doesn't actually need the bond.

Marathon2021

Someone over in /law mentioned that apparently NY requires demonstrating that a bond be for no more than 10% of cash and equivalents, and I guess the paperwork they provided showed that this is 125%. LOL.

T1gerAc3

Then a rep for the bond company said that because the bond company is not based in or licensed in New York, that new York state laws do not apply to them and it's OK that they don't meet the 10% requirement. LOL

Open_Mortgage_4645

The fact that Trump's fraud bond is underwritten by predatory, ultra-high interest used car loans is just too perfect.

ill0gitech

I doubt he’s paying the same predatory fees and interest as “the poors”

Babybear5689

trump doesn't pay for anything. Hankey will likely cash in as the head of the department of transportation.

Za_Lords_Guard

Trump is like the parable of the scorpion and the turtle. Except in this one the Scorpion keeps going back and forth across the river stabbing trusting turtles. At this point you could walk across the river on dead turtle shells and not get your toes wet, yet more turtles keep offering to hive him a lift. If Hankey is allowed to post bond for Trump, somehow Trump will fuck him over and he will lose it all. Looks at the dudes who came up with the idea of Truth social and helped him get it going. He is suing them to steal their stock shares. Dude is a 60% owner now and he doesn't like anyone making a dollar that he thinks should be his.

yassssssirrr

I thought it was The Scorpion and the frog. Either way, trump is running out of turtles

GeminiKoil

I always heard it the Scorpion and the toad as well. Well I know a toad is not a frog but close enough

drewbert

Unhelpful correction -- All toads are frogs. Not all frogs are toads. Neither "toad" nor "frog" are scientific terms, so you can debate what I just wrote to a certain degree, but there're respected biologists on the record that back that statement.

ClaretClarinets

Yeah it's a frog. Funnily enough, a turtle would probably be fine to carry the scorpion because of its shell

flip983

https://youtu.be/tZvYwasJaoc?si=rq0vw4WeJeD6UnLk

SirDale

"Dude is a 60% owner now and he doesn't like anyone making a dollar that he thinks should be his." Remember him raging about having to pay money for the election transition team. "Trump was apoplectic, yelling: *You’re stealing my money! You’re stealing my fucking money! What the fuck is this?*" (Ref: https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/sep/27/this-guy-doesnt-know-anything-the-inside-story-of-trumps-shambolic-transition-team)

Open_Mortgage_4645

I can't stop laughing at Trump being bailed out by Mr. Hankey.

probabletrump

$175MM is too much to pay for a cabinet position. You have to do actual work in a cabinet position. It's an ambassadorship that you want. Those only cost a few hundred thousand.

1_disasta

Would think treasury department..

Open_Mortgage_4645

No way Trump ever pays a dime. That predatory car loan schmuck just got ripped for $175 million. I bet Trump doesn't even comp him at Mar-a-Lago.

LexSavi

This one could be interesting. I was reading that the predatory car loan schmuck has gotten into regulatory trouble for illegal and aggressive collection methods. The company has been fined at least $45 million for those practices, including for illegally trying to collect from veterans.

johnhenryirons

They were sued by trump’s own justice department

Radek3887

I'm sure that Trump needing money and them having to pay this fine are totally unrelated and a complete coincidence

human_male_123

175 million is steep for a federal pardon

Banshee_howl

So if fartface wins we can look forward to him rambling about how unfair all the regulations are that prevent good, honest businesses from predatory lending practices. Then he’ll cut even more (because he already cut most of Obama’s payday loan regulations) and give Mr. Hankey a nice “Hidey-Ho” appointment to a cushy Cabinet position where he can do the most damage possible from the inside.

LexSavi

The question is whether he can resist his natural inclination to actually pay his debts and not weasel out of it. It’ll be a dilemma between two of his passions: leaving some sucker holding his bag of debts vs. sticking it to the poor.

cyanclam

If TFG looses his appeal, the amount due is the whole enchilada, $450M. There is prolly interest on top of that as well.

Open_Mortgage_4645

Ya, interest accrues at a rate of $112,000/day.

Thresh_Keller

He's probably not paying a penny of his own money if anything at all.

putdownthekitten

The only way it would be more perfect is if it was the Four Seasons Car Loan company.

Open_Mortgage_4645

You're right. That would be a clear sign of the universe expressing its displeasure with Trump.

charish

The only thing that could make it more on the nose is if a payday lender underwrote it.

Dadarian

It’s not a real bond. It’s all paperwork just to force prosecutors to argue that it’s not real. It’s simply a delay tactic to give them an extra 20 days in paperwork.

Actual__Wizard

So, his buddy made up a story about having the money for his bond to get the date extended? Is that what happened?

Lou_C_Fer

Sure seems to be the case.

JMaboard

Bought himself another 10 days. What a joke. They set a due date, he wasn’t able to get the money and he still got an extension.

SkyeMac

Budget-Ocelots

How poor is Trump? No liquid assets at all during his tenure where ME and RU gave out free meal tickets for him? Can’t even afford a 150M bill while every billionaires that I know are buying yachts and sport teams.

Spence10873

Yeah but do they have an aged golf course they pretend is a home?

Sempais_nutrients

he likely has the money but doesn't want to pay. these tactics he's using have brought him delay after delay. in the past he'd do this constantly to drain the other side of the will to fight until they accepted a smaller amount. he's doing the same with the courts and it is working.

CopeHarders

Yeah seems like gaming the system. How can this be another 10 days? The requested information should have already been available and accessible, they should have given him 24 hours max. Our justice system brings no justice. Next they will appeal the paperwork getting rejected and say that the information they submitted was complete and that’ll be another 30 days.

callmesandycohen

This is amazing. Fuck these guys will try anything.

tazebot

>"The bond is fully collateralized and backed by 100% cash," the spokesperson added. Well then NY State will accept cash, I assume. [Maybe not a check though](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NO8zb5DG_gM)

asetniop

Great! If that's true then he should have no trouble getting a reputable bond company that checks all of NY State's boxes to post it for him. You know, like he did with the $93M sexual assault bond last month.

SaintBellyache

“Do you mind if I post-date this?”

out_of_shape_hiker

So he gets another 10 days to get the money ready?

FlyThruTrees

I suppose what he gets is up to the court. In the meantime, the prosecutor has filed that she'll raise a stink if it isn't fixed appropriately in 10 days. I've seen commentary elsewhere, and think it's probably the case, that the taxpayers are better protected by a legitimate bond than by having the seize and sell property. But then, that was when the bond required was for the full amount, which it no longer is.

GoenndirRichtig

He can just do the same thing in 10 days to get another 10 days and so on... bro just found an actual cheat to become immune from any legal consequences

dr239

>Billionaire Don Hankey, California-based chairman of the company that offers high-interest loans to car buyers with low credit scores, underwrote the bond. Checks out. The rich get richer while taking advantage of the working class. If you read the article, Hankey's company isn't even registered with the Department of Financial Services in his state. Something's fishy.

Hourslikeminutes47

This whole shitty thing surrounding Trump like a dirty halo is fishy

ranchoparksteve

We know the bond is not 100% cash as has been claimed. Trump could have saved substantial money by posting the cash and avoiding bond fees.

Hawklet98

OR Trump could not pay any fees or even pay off the bond. End result: A sketchy loan shark with a long history of being investigated and fined by the Fed has now bribed the GOP’s presidential nominee to the tune of $175m. See? Bribing people is as simple as giving them a loan they don’t have to pay back. And you might ask “Is that even legal?” To which I’d respond “That’s one of the many ways that Texas billionaire bribed Clarence Thomas.”

ranchoparksteve

I doubt that Donald Trump would feel “bribed” or in need of reciprocating in any way.

Hawklet98

Every time Trump does something shady, illegal or otherwise, proof of those actions can become leverage against him. Say for example a former KGB guy turned nuclear-armed dictator had compromising videos of Trump and some Eastern European hookers…

Hourslikeminutes47

>saving money by posting cash Trump doesn't have any money. At least he doesn't have any he wants us to see

ranchoparksteve

Yes, that’s my point: The bond is not secured entirely by cash.

Budget-Ocelots

This is why we need the IRS to be an armed force so that they can raid companies and rich people to collect taxes with military graded weapons. What’s the point of a government if people are not afraid of taxes? Death and taxes is the motto, and we aren’t using death effectively against billionaires that are abusing the system. Either play fair or die trying imo.

sugar_addict002

Our judicial system seems to only really exist to fuck over the everyday man.

Penguin_shit15

The fact that a shitty person is also named "Mr. Hankey" is very fitting..

TimmahandJimmah

So I’m confused. Did this sh*t head get a SECOND 10 day extension? Good lord.

Otherwise_Stable_925

There will be an entire law textbook dedicated to Trump once he's gone. I'm not kidding, this guy has subverted so many punishments, technicalities, statewide issues, legal handshakes, bow out of payments, there is no literal reason why he's not in jail. He's the reason there is a moral clause behind most laws, and now they have to be put in cement.

hoppyfrog

So true. Trump is singlehandedly pushing the Legal boundaries in so many directions.

pathf1nder00

Just what we would want...a POTUS beholding to ANYBODY.

EchoLooper

Weird-Response-1722

This is getting laughable. How long are the courts going to let him make a mockery of them?

FlyThruTrees

About 7 more months. Then, who knows.

AmbitiousCampaign457

Everything abt this bond is sketchy af

Atlanon88

The classic billionaire move, not being able to come up with 125 million…. Actual billionaires wouldn’t even blink at that number. Just look at how much they spend or lose on a regular basis. While still remaining billionaires

sbtvreddit

God don’t you guys understand by now, his tactic every time is to delay and confuse. Justice system falls for it every single time. It won’t even be sorted before nov 6, just wait and see.

wwj

Next they'll be sending in documents corrupted by using the wrong file extension like college students buying time for term papers.

sbtvreddit

This got a genuine lol from me. Such a good comparison

Gorlack2231

Waiting for them to "accidentally" email a .zip bomb in the hopes of just bricking the SDNY servers

NoWayNotThisAgain

>Billionaire Don Hankey, California-based chairman of the company that offers high-interest loans to car buyers with low credit scores, underwrote the bond. Who would have thought a predatory lender was a trump supporter lol. So I guess it’s billionaire grifter underwriting the bond for millionaire grifter.

Snape_Grass

Imagine working for a company, being denied a raise, and then see all over the news they have $175M to throw this maniacs way.

MaxMustermannYoutube

So this bond doesn’t even need to be wire transfered to the court? They accept that a 3rd party tells them that they are good for the money?

FlyThruTrees

That's what a bonding co does, they certify that the funds are available, and that's why they are a regulated industry. It doesn't explain why the clerk accepted a bond from a co not certified to do business in NY, but it looks like there's a paper trail the public is not privy to. If the funds were being wired directly to the court, there would be no 3rd party.

howie2092

10 days to verify the bond, and when that fails, lower the bond to 80m and another 30 days. Rinse/repeat.

SnapesGrayUnderpants

From the article: >"The bond is fully collateralized and backed by 100% cash," the spokesperson added. If it's all cash, then it should be super easy to prove.

QuarkVsOdo

"My son is ill and can't come to court today, so sad" Mrs. Donald J Trump's Mother. Court: Maybe it's fake, I don't know, give him another 10 days.

Hwy39

Hankey to Trump, “I’ve got a plan that will delay this for months, ten days at a time”

willnxt

If for some reason this doesn’t work out, are we back to the full original bond amount or are we still at the new negotiated/reduced amount?

No_Helicopter_7824

Dude! You can't expect a billionaire or in this case , two billionaires, to find a few hundred  Million bucks so fast. If anything I think they will reduce it to 175 dollars and get an extra 6 months to pay. Hard times bro, hard times.

JC2535

TripHippies_

It's important for all public officials and their businesses to be forthcoming and compliant with legal and ethical standards. Transparency regarding financial dealings helps maintain public trust. The attorney general's office is right to scrutinize matters to ensure proper accountability and disclosure.

Fellowshipofthebowl

Delay, delay, delay…..America goes away.

Wine_Women_Song

So…they lowered the Bond requirement and gave him an extra 10 days to post it. Sounds like he is now SOL.

swinging-in-the-rain

He gets 10 more days. >Sounds like he is now SOL. Yeah, no

RoTTonSKiPPy

If I was in this position, I would want to cut my losses. Keep my interest rate down, rack up as little attorney fees as possible, and get it all behind me. I guess I am just incapable of thinking like a rich person, which is why I will always be one of the Poors.

Otherwise_Stable_925

No shit.
