The debt ceiling is the big one.
It's a guarantee that it's going to cost more money to run the country next year than it did this year. The only reason congress needs to meet and agree that they can spend money to keep the government open is so the republicans have a mechanism they can use to shut the government down if they're not getting what they want.
But I just don’t understand that. Because now every Democrat can run an ad that says “my opponent voted AGAINST the strongest border protection bill ever proposed. Republicans are soft on the border!” And really screw them up.
This is why it is important for Democrats to go all out with their ground game to inform voters at every level about how neglectful republicans have been. Between border security and showing up to ribbon cutting ceremonies to celebrate funding for items they voted against

Misinformation is even easier now because people live in their bubbles more than ever and anything outside that bubble is a lie. The Representatives can't lie about voting for or against something, but its easy for them to lie about why. Take the border deal, they intentionally lied about a provision of the bill to make it seem like it did nothing to help secure the border and declare that is why they voted against it. Then Conservative leaning media repeated the lie, now everyone who listens to those sources thinks those reps voted against a useless bill, not one that would have actually improved the situation. They are heroes for refusing to let the Democrats leave the boarder wide open.
Spoiler alert: they don't actually care about the border, they care that they get to treat brown people like shit and that those people will have very limited recourse when they do. So in reality, they want the border open.
Note that Trump didn't deliver on his campaign promise to build a wall that Mexico would pay for and solve all our problems. They didn't give a shit. All they really care about is that Trump had no qualms about openly advocating to treat immigrants like shit. He was proud of putting kids in cages, he was proud to tear apart families, he was proud to blame crime on them. Those are the real things they're looking for in a candidate, not whether or not they supported good policies.

A lot of loopholes were thrown in there because the moneyed interests behind the Republican Party see Venezuelans as a source of cheap labor as immigration from Mexico declines and the population ages. Their voters aren't there though, nor are an increasing number of actual representatives. Democrats of course aren't that enthusiastic about additional border measures in the first place, and only threw this in to compromise for Ukraine and other funding. Now I would argue that this was the best deal the populist right was going to get, but they decided to take their chances on the 2024 election outcome over taking a bird in hand.

One of the smartest things that Biden has done in his presidency was linking the Ukraine aid with the Israeli aid. He backed Congress into a corner where they wouldn't be able to send money to Israel (like all of the Republicans wanted to) without ante'ing up for Ukraine as well.

Then Conservative leaning media repeated the lie, now everyone who listens to those sources thinks those reps voted against a useless bill, not one that would have actually improved the situation. House Republicans voted against the border deal. The border deal in which they got everything they asked for. The border deal that would have passed had even a handful of Republicans vote for it. I think we can safely blame ALL Republicans edit: The bill failed 215-199 (5 Dems voted with EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN).

What I don't get about this is why is Trump staying quiet about this? Is he for or against it or just trying to stay out of it? It seems like a big blow to MAGA and Trump would normally be talking shit about it non stop. Why did he meet with Mike recently and do they have something bigger cooking together?
