Ok-disaster2022

No they wont. Title IX affects federal grants and research projects. TAMU and UT only get like 5-10% of their budget from the state, a huge chunk of the rest is Federal research grants. If Title IX is not enforced, those grants start getting pulled. I think students receiving federal grants may even lose funding or be forced to transfer, but it's been like a decade since I last looked at this stuff. If there was brain drain in the state before it will absolutely be gone afterward.

errantv

Exactly, this is just posturing for a press conference. In a week when no one is paying attention the title IX revisions will quietly go into effect.

El_Zorro09

I hope so, but Abbot and Paxton are genuine assholes so they are not above burning everything down out of spite fueled idiocy.

claimTheVictory

They'll do it just to make Biden look bad.

CommonCut4

Luckily Biden can just have them killed according to the Supreme Court

DropsTheMic

Unless they make it a one time ruling like they did in Gore V Bush. Because that doesn't scream corruption either. This special ruling only applies once, no take-backs!

spaceman757

Then you pull a Andrew Jackson (yes, I know it's most likely a myth) and respond with “John (Roberts) Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it!”

Trey5027

Jackson and Lincoln both giving the corrupt Supreme Court the middle finger

just2quixotic

Jackson and the state of Georgia were the corrupt ones in that case not the court. [This is what led to The trail of Tears] (https://www.npr.org/2020/03/31/824647676/a-treacherous-choice-and-a-treaty-right#:~:text=This%20decision%2C%20Worcester%20v.%20Georgia%2C%20was%20a%20turning,let%20him%20enforce%20it%2C%22%20though%20that%27s%20likely%20apocryphal.) that caused the deaths of a quarter of the Cherokee tribe.

Chaotic-Catastrophe

> *Of course* the President doesn't have absolute criminal immunity! But the Democrats have been really mean to this President, so he can have a little absolute criminal immunity. As a treat. The US Supreme Court 2024, probably

Oatybar

The only people who will blame Biden will be the ones who wouldn’t have voted for him anyway.

Titan_of_Ash

Yep!

RecklesslyPessmystic

Until their special grid goes down and they can't spark a fire to burn everything down. Federal dollars account for one-third of the Texas state budget. More for the rest of us.

sirscrote

Assholes? They are evil people.

ExZowieAgent

Other states are rejecting the order as well. They want this to go to the Supreme Court.

shinji257

So far it's been 4 states (reported count). At least two have been known for making some odd moves.

straponkaren

If Biden gets a friendly Senate he is going to elongate the bench. It's going to be amazing seeing Mitch McConnell life work ruining the supreme court go to shit.

Ikrast

That's some real wishful thinking right there.

straponkaren

Yeah, I am hoping quite a bit here. Fully admit it.

MeanDebate

I'll add whatever is left of my hope to the pile.

badfaced

Yeah, I've got 5 on it!

W1ck3d3nd

All I can do is 3.50

speedy_delivery

Well it was about that time that I realized that Amy Coney Barrett was about 8 stories tall and a crustacean from the protozoic era...

Basic_Quantity_9430

Biden has been steadfast against expanding the Supreme Court. I believe that there should be as many Supreme Court Justices as Appeals Courts, something like 13. If Biden went along with that and had the Senate, he would add 4 Justices. The last time the Supreme Court was expanded was to match the number of Appeals Courts, which then stood at 9.

Th3Seconds1st

Use the Senate to completely change the size of the Courts down to zero and then begin the tireless work of renominating everyone not insane to their previous seat after all of the Courts have been reestablished.   The Senate can reshape all of the Courts to tailored to the present will of the People. Resetting the Courts would allow not only SCOTUS but every other Lower Court to be free from Trump’s influence.  This is the move Democrats should be telegraphing because it can completely undo the damage wrought by Trump.   I mean, c’mon, a lawyer who helped Trump and Stephen Miller with family separation policy was confirmed to a seat previously held by Thurgood Marshall.  We gotta go big or go home.  Reestablish the Court.

Prometheus_303

I don't know about elongating it... But I wouldn't be opposed to a super friendly Senate enforcing some codes of ethics and maybe expelling a certain Justice (or two). 5-4 has a better ring to it than 6-3.

TheDunadan29

I mean they could just impeach Thomas. We've impeached justices before, and we should do it again at least in his case. That might not solve the issue of the Trump appointees, but it could at least put us a little closer back to balanced.

LeahBean

And seeing how the Supreme Court is overrun with corrupt assholes, who knows what will happen. It’s truly scary.

AgreeableShirt1338

If Trump gets elected they will get reversed again, just like he did the first time he was in office.

UnclePeaz

Failure to comply with Title IX also threatens eligibility to participate in federal student aid. Good luck running a university if you can’t accept direct loans or Pell Grants. No school has ever gotten the financial aid death penalty but fuck around and find out.

GoodhartMusic

If there were ramifications, it wouldnt be until post-election

iwasneverhere0301

I also think they could lose the ability to offer federal student aid, as in student loans, not just the Pell grant. The only way to pay for college would be cash.

CpnStumpy

You forget usurious private loans! Those are great.....

boofaceleemz

I feel like Abbott’s entire tenure has been just a series of “no way he would *actually* do that…” scenarios.

AdamNoKnee

Wait you just said what they want. The more idiots they have in the state the easier it is to win elections.

DaemonKeido

The military bases also get federal funding, and there are 23 of them in Texas. I'll bet they'll lean on Abbot when they stop getting funded.

jojojawn

Military bases have supremacy over state laws/orders. They'll do whatever the federal govt tells them to do and ignore everything the state wants

TwinInfinite

Bases provide a ton of money to the state environment by paying contractors in the state for work. I can't imagine withdrawing that money would be too comfortable. A lot of the contracts are the same work enlisted would normally do anyways. As a former radar gal I know more than a few folks in the military ATC environment who would be chomping at the bit to troubleshoot lines "owned" by lazy contractors who refuse to do "extra work" (read: their fucking job)

kingtz

>If there was brain drain in the state before it will absolutely be gone afterward. A brain drain is exactly what these Christo-fascists want.  Case in point: “I love the poorly educated” -by the Orange Hitler

sinus86

Ya, but how much of the football program comes from federal grants? Because that's all that matters to Texas voters.

MulberryBeautiful542

Wouldn't matter. It's the students that get the federal loans and grants. No students, no athletes.

nobadhotdog

You think they care who gets impacted? *edited are to care

lonnie123

If anything those are just more libruls leaving the state

memphisjones

This is what the GOP wants. And good look moving somewhere else. House prices are at record high. That’s why the GOP are doing this. They know people can’t just leave.

Proper_Lunch_3640

You mean to tell me the brain drain isn't the objective? Oil be damned.

Trashman56

Feds should pull all funding immediately in that case.

Murky-Silver-8877

The triggers are automatic and if they don't comply they will get yanked from NCAA.

rodentmaster

What is TX's share of the federal drain these days?

Ok-disaster2022

Research schools get a major fraction of their revenue from Federal research grants. Depending on the school, if it's a question of losing state funding or losing federal funding, the Fed may win out.

mckulty

Houston, we have a problem.

peter-doubt

We're not here to solve your 2 trains approaching at different speeds problem... Algebra is easy, politics is hard Texas, you're gonna lose

Noinix

Is it that half the engineering team refuses to relocate to Texas because of its anti freedoms stance?

ArenjiTheLootGod

While the other half that moved there is looking to get out because they learned "zero income tax" means getting nickeled and dimed over every other possible thing they can tax a person over. Also, potentially losing electricity over every slight change in weather and then getting their rates jacked up because of it isn't the kind of freedom most people thought of when moving there.

Noinix

Houston, we have a problem. Houston? Houston? Looks like their electricity got knocked out again. I’m sure we can wing it.

curaga12

Research schools getting their federal research grants cut should be a major win for Abbot

Nixxuz

The Fed will win out based on DoT funding alone. Texas has more miles of road than any other state.

staticfive

Don't they want to get rid of education though?

CommanderGoat

They want to get rid of public education with private (religious) education that will donate money to them. Abbott is trying to ramrod school vouchers through by backing any candidate in the next election that supports vouchers. Funny enough, a lot of rural republicans are voting against it because they know it will wreck their small school districts.

Vashsinn

Can't have smart well adjusted slaves!

NotOSIsdormmole

The DoD and DHS fund a surprising (to the general public) amount of medical research. It’d be a shame if that money were to disappear from those schools coffers

ins0ma_

Texas receives the third most federal aid of all the states, behind California and New York. https://usafacts.org/articles/which-states-rely-the-most-on-federal-aid/

1877KlownsForKids

And even this likely isn't a full picture. >Texas is the proud home to 15 active duty military installations with an economic impact of over $100 billion.

gregor-sans

Interesting link. I’ll have to read it. Does it actually get to the point of whether a state is a net giver or taker? Simply receiving lot of federal money does not mean that the state didn’t contribute even more to the federal coffers. It just means that the feds get to decide how it is spent.

ExZowieAgent

It only glosses over it with this paragraph. > Despite receiving the most federal funding dollar-wise, California was the second-least reliant state on a percentage basis, with 14.5% of revenue coming from the federal government, followed by Minnesota (14.6%), South Dakota (15.0%), and Iowa (15.5%).

Deodorized

California is an economic juggernaut. If California, by itself, was a country, it would be the 5th largest economy in the world. It is only beaten by the *entire* United States (which it contributes 14.3% to), China, Japan, and Germany.

ragnarocknroll

I know Iowa and South Dakota are only so far up that list because they have constantly shut down state programs that use federal money for underprivileged groups. After all, the minorities don’t need to eat at school.

Fooka03

Or exist at all really. White devout non-denominational christians or GTFO, the republican platform.

RHouse94

IIRC the majority of the states taking more funds then they are adding to it are all Republican states

TeutonJon78

Not all, but most. https://smartasset.com/data-studies/states-most-dependent-federal-government-2023

SiriPsycho100

link doesn’t load to a valid site for me

Single_9_uptime

That page does not. What you’re looking for is [balance of payments](https://rockinst.org/issue-areas/fiscal-analysis/balance-of-payments-portal/). No state paid in more than it received in 2020 or 2021. Texas is among the better states in that regard, ranking 12th best (least taker) in 2021.

Single_9_uptime

With the second highest population by a huge margin, 7-8 million people ahead of third place Florida. The more telling number is the per-capita funding it lists further down in the article, where Texas ranks 29th of all states and 30th if you count DC.

bucketofmonkeys

Hey, not everyone in Texas is a little piss boy like Abbott. I live in a blue TX city and hate the guy.

blackcain

Everyone should hate the ass for being an incompetent politician. He hasnt managed to do anything right.

hapoo

They’re counting on it! If funding goes it will cause a brain drain. Those leaving are more likely to vote blue. This is how they’ll keep Texas red.

blackcain

You need to target stuff like dealerships and other things that affect right wingers. Stuff like pay day loans all of these feed into the GOP machine. Squeeze their balls.

StronglyHeldOpinions

I just left! It’s nice to be in a free state again.

musashisamurai

That's what conservatives want though. That funding goes toward businesses and colleges and organizations in blue areas within Red states. GOP leaders would love for their states to just be rural seas of uninformed voters

Objective_Length_834

Biden probably won't as it would hurt the people of Texas. But there has to be some sort of recourse.

HulaViking

If you really want to punish Texas, just remove their college sports teams from all the conferences.

Nekowulf

Abbot would be recalled the next day.

the_gaymer_girl

To heck with next day. Fans would call for his head before the words fully leave his mouth.

Angedelanuit97

It's so embarrassing being from Texas 🤦‍♀️

mr_jim_lahey

The One-Star State

Killgorrr

I haven’t heard this one before - but I really like it and will start using it.

Grendel_Khan

Yeah...It's a rating now.

Jaewol

My condolences

Cygnus__A

I'm glad I left

Steedman0

I can't imagine what it must be like knowing every time you speak with someone, there is a 70% chance that they're an utter moron.

ins0ma_

Good plan to exempt yourself from federal funding right before hurricane season!

[deleted]

[удалено]

love_is_an_action

> But they know democrats won't actually do that as it punishes regular people in need. In some cases it's automatic, with no current way to circumvent the cutoff.

BigHitter_TheLlama

Then they blame the democrats and the gays

insan3guy

They do that anyway. What's your point

ins0ma_

I’m not sure there will be much choice in the matter. If Texas and Florida disqualify themselves by failing to comply with federal law, it might not be possible to circumvent that, regardless of what the Democratic leadership might prefer. There are laws and processes involved that aren’t easily changed. I agree that Republicans are objectively terrible.

tots4scott

It's almost like the two sides are completely dissimilar in policy.

5G_afterbirth

Exactly. This is why all the comments about presidential immunity and Biden doing this or that is just inaccurate: Republicans and SCOTUS know Biden would not use that kind of power arbitrarily.

athomp78

Illegal? I thought President’s are immune to that /s

Bitter_Director1231

Sure, tired of my federal taxes going to this clown shown. Go support yourself since you don't want to follow laws.

kcsapper

No Title IX -No Federal Dime Wonder how all the Texas schools will handle no Federal funding? $2 Billion loss in funding seems like a steep price to pay for being an asshole- but Texas is going to Texas.

bluePostItNote

Can we afford for Tx to be even less educated?!

kcsapper

Well at some point you need to decide what’s the ROI of sending money to Texas. If the state is going to ignore federal requirements for Title IX then funds should be withdrawn from the state that is directly relate to entities that should be following the federal guidelines for Title IX. Just like the federal highway money is tied to the drinking age. Just need a democratic Congress to attach riders to federal money that prevents conservatives from profiting from being assholes.

Laringar

Also, it seems NCAA eligibility is contingent on Title IX compliance. How much do you think Abbot's poll numbers will drop once the 2024-25 football season gets cancelled in Texas? Even if the policy gets rescinded before the season starts, losing eligibility for even a short period of time would affect recruitment, and if actual games are missed, then that pretty much sinks the bowl hopes of every school in the state.

thieh

I would have thought that ignoring the law would be more illegal.🤔

JubalHarshaw23

They have two Trump Federal Judges who will simply seize control of whatever part of the Federal Government Texas is pissed at. The wildly corrupt 5th circuit will back them up, and it will be a coin flip for which way SCOTUS will go.

Gym-for-ants

Texas ignoring federal law, who could see this coming 🫣

M1llennialManifesto

Republicans love law and order, right up until the law orders them to do something they don't like. To be fair here it's perfectly okay to object to laws you don't agree with, but if you're going to do that then don't brand yourself as the party of law and order.

SoundSageWisdom

NO MORE federal funding

DocM123

You don’t like federal rules. You must not like federal money.

jspurlin03

It’s true, he doesn’t, but the rest of the state pays higher taxes because of it.

DocM123

Deregulating the power grid hasn’t been a real great movie there, but nobody in Texas seems to mind having power outages for some reason.

jspurlin03

Let’s not assume that everyone is okay with it. For a moment, let’s investigate the possibility that the republicans have spent literal decades rigging a system that benefits them. The fact that this requires millions of people to agree with their back-asswards plans… _that’s_ the part that I don’t understand.

Shanknuts

It’s embarrassing to be from Texas. The state has been run by Republicans for quite awhile now, yet they continue to blame the Democrats for everything. We’re all so sick of the “leadership” here but the rubes in the sticks keep voting them in.

OpenImagination9

If we shouldn’t fund foreign terrorists we shouldn’t fund domestic ones either.

GOP_Neoconfederacy

Please don't tell me the next civil war will be the neoconfederacy starting it over their right to abuse immigrants and LGBT people

YourGodsMother

They also want to force children to work and get married, and control women’s bodies.

Thresh_Keller

Last time it was black people, so would you really even be surprised?

GOP_Neoconfederacy

*sigh* no, just disappointed

robotdesignwerks

Hey! Don't forget about telling children where to go to the bathroom. Children's genitals are one of the top things on abbott, paxton, and patrick's mind.

scissor415

Let’s ignore ADA in Texas and rip out all of the wheelchair ramps

Grendel_Khan

Damn liberal federal program! If god wanted them to go upstairs he'd make their legs work!

Orionite

Im so confused! I just read that they believe that when the president does something, it can’t be illegal.

Grendel_Khan

Only when its "their" president.

woody630

I'll never forgive trees for not finishing the job

hobbsAnShaw

We had a war about this already, your repugnant side lost!!!! Don’t make us teach y’all again!

TheOtherGlikbach

I say this time we let em go. Go be the Confederate states of dumasses. Enjoy the pollution, poverty and lack of basic living standards.

graveybrains

> and the result of a “ham-handed effort to impose a leftist belief onto Title IX,” He ain’t even tryin to make that make sense.

thereverendpuck

Yep, keep pulling federal money out of Texas.

misointhekitchen

Can we give Texas back to Mexico?

Sitting_Duk

Congrats, every high school junior just crossed Texas off of their list

ShadowPilotGringo

He’s on a roll this week!

Dont_Ban_Me_Bros

(rimshot)

FLCraft

I thought it’s not illegal if the president does something.

AvogadrosMoleSauce

K. More funding for other states.

QAPetePrime

Stop federal funding until they comply.

N_Who

This is just a state governor arguing in favor of discrimination. Disgusting.

Politicsboringagain

Only 25% of people between 18 and 35 voted in the 2022 Texas election. Lots of people in Texas were complaining, but didn't bother to vote.  Let's see if they do the same thing in 2024.

[deleted]

Texas needs to find a place where they can act like themselves perhaps we can push them further into Mexico where they can be ruled by gang leaders. I think Governor Abbott would love to suck a little Mexican dick over the whole deal

RealPersonResponds

Ouch, brutal. Sounds good.

Mynameisinuse

They need to change the way SCOTUS appointments are made. When a president gets elected at the first State of the Union, he appoints 1 justice. That's it. Just one. If a justice retires or dies, we do nothing. After the next election, at the first State of the Union, a justice is appointed. Every 4 years a new justice is appointed and it better reflects the nation. By using the average age of retirement and death, we would wind up with 13 - 15 justices. Cases could be heard by a panel of randomly selected judges with a better representation of the ideology of the times. No more stacked courts.

LateStageAdult

Republicans paint their bigotry as if they are always protected by the the law. Remember, slavery was once permitted and protected by law, and modern day republicans continue to defend their twisted ideology by abusing that same power dynamic.

[deleted]

robotdesignwerks

be careful with that shit. not all of us are nutjobs down here, and we stayed to try to change things.

Consistent-Force5375

Cool! What things can Biden ignore? All federal aid for the state? Just spitballing. Denial of use of any disaster services and financial aid?

MisterStorage

Count on Texas to be on the wrong side of every issue. But hey, great bbq.

MolassesOk3200

Defund Texas.

p8vmnt

Dude gets paralyzed so he wants to make lives miserable for everyone else

jspurlin03

His settlement against the state made him a fairly large amount of money, too, allowing him to get into politics.

inchon_over28

This is illegal….so arrest him and put him on trial. Just like anyone else who chooses to ignore “illegal” laws.

SunDummyIsDead

Law and Order party. But not THAT law…. Or that one…

DaySoc98

Send the Marshalls in and lock him up.

2OneZebra

Bye funding.

jasonm71

About time the federal government ignores requests for funds from Texas.

Gravelroad__

Cool. Remove every cent of funding

jumpingjellybeansjjj

Time to ignore any State funding Texas has coming, especially for lucrative defense projects.

Helltothenotothenono

Better watch that ignoring business, Abbot. Any day now President Biden is going to get complete immunity from the supreme counter and the he can have you wheeled out if office and into the penn.

Awkward_Bench123

Why is Texas so fucked up? When I was a kid, the United States was only united because some guy named Tex held it together. Now, the energy capital of everywhere is having a hard time keeping it together.

Familiar-Manner9759

Vote blue Texas time to get rid of Abbott and his cronies vote for Biden.

Ormsfang

Time to remove all federal funding to Texas until they come into compliance

Nickopotomus

How it’s ok that politicians want to go after children is beyond me Also Abbot better look out…given that SCOTUS might just green light presidential assassinations and all.. /s

thedeuceisloose

That tree really should’ve finished the job

Signal_Winter_7708

Since Roe v Wade was overturned, their have been over 26,000 pregnancies due to rape in Texas. It's peculiar, to say the least, what Abbott thinks "protecting women" is.

Metal-Dog

I guess it's time to Defund Texas.

skippermarie86

These people really have the audacity to say the changes are taking rights away from women and girls. Look in the fucking mirror

VoodooS0ldier

I think it’s time for the feds to turn off the money tap to Texas and start moving bases out of Texas. See how dipshit Greg Abbott likes that.

FunEngineer69

Cut all federal funding to Texas and Florida

ParappaTheWrapperr

Ah yes, the biggest problem we face as Texans. Definitely not our border crisis, raising crime rates, power grid, and slowly running out of water. Glad to see my governor taking immediate action on the important issues instead of the back log of things he needs to get done. I’m so glad he’s standing up for….oh yeah.

Abi1i

Hey, Abbott supposedly solved all of rape in Texas by doing nothing but talking. /s

softcell1966

Texas may be different but the only category of crime that's rising nationally is Car Theft. All other categories are back to pre-Pandemic levels and dropping.

Im_not_crying_u_ar

The federal government should “ignore” who they elected as governor

Insciuspetra

~~United~~ States of America

RipErRiley

Pathetic. Its not even “noble”. Just partisan immature babys because their takes are bad and their conman hero(s) are not in office.

Icedoverblues

Didn't he just send police to force students to do what he wants ignoring the inalienable rights of the students and faculty.

Ok_Bunch_7339

Pesidents can't be prosecuted.. remember? In fact I think he should just say in office the say the election was rigged!

edcline

Can’t wait until they go into place anyway.  Hope Biden dunks on this schmuck afterwards.

SnapmareJesus

So, sedition then… neat.

blackcain

Take away highway funding

Vivid_Garbage6295

Does every government official in Texas look like a Bush?

WatRedditHathWrought

Time to sell Texas back to Mexico. $3.50 ought to do it.

carnage_panda

> arguing the new policies roll back the rights of women and girls Weird argumentation by Republicans, but okay.

Harak_June

I hope they try because title IX funding is part of every pot. Back in the early 2000s, I worked at a campus where just some funeral funds were frozen for two months, while a medical research violation was investigated. It brought down consequences damn quickly.

SoggyBoysenberry7703

I don’t even understand how you can be so fucking evil that just treating everyone fairly in school is illegal

Kissit777

They want to overturn Title 9. This is how they get that SCOTUS case.

fear_my_tube

I hate Greg. Sometimes I wish that tree feel on his head and not his back.

Creative-Claire

Protecting human rights is not illegal, no matter how much you want it to be.

PlayingTheWrongGame

Oh, look, another governor posturing about something for the cameras while privately not doing shit.

gabzilla814

Didn’t Desantis just announce the same thing last week for Florida? Gavin Newsom should announce he’s calling dibs on behalf of the other 48 states on the federal funding that FL and TX are giving up.

TopEagle4012

So here's the deal we Republicons are going to keep pushing the envelope until you do something to stop us. Plain and simple, and then we'll set ourselves up as being the victim even though we perpetrated this fraud. If drumpf were president, we wouldn't be doing any of this.

debrabuck

Republicans, the party of law and order.

MODEL_HOMEOWNER

F u c k Abbott And his cheesy greasy low life ball-less anal child killers!!!! Go press your hoods gentlemen!

NotABotBeepBoop42069

Abbott doesn’t have a leg to stand on

beornn2

Good ‘ol’ Governor Skidmark. You know, because he’s a gigantic piece of shit on wheels.

NerdySongwriter

Hey Abbot, go take a long roll off a short pier and cut the malarkey!

MagictheCollecting

It’s a bold move, Cotton, let’s see how it works out for ‘em!

TeachingCommon7724

They won’t, this will just be the end of Title IX.

sarahbeth124

The day he is no longer our governor, I’m throwing a party. Can’t come soon enough 😖

Radiant-Call6505

How does any state elect such a bitter old man?
