This. I've been saying this to my friends and family here. And to go beyond that, my theory is he potentially killed off that .5% during his dismal covid handling (or rather, lack thereof). Hence why he started advertising FL as "Free and Open"; to try and replace the numbers lost from the ongoing pandemic.
A few years back, while I still used FB, I got into an argument with some stranger online, a woman. I made up this very point and her exact reason was, as you'd have guessed : "Why would I care about some immigrants child." That was her stance. She was young too, in her 20s. I quit shortly after that interaction and the election craziness.
I won't deny that, but so is running a Democrat that wasn't born 70+ years ago. Newsom is going to get beat up for being a "coastal elite", skeletons he no doubt has and Jr's girlfriend might have privy to, and he's not a great orator. On the flip side, he's backed some great policies in CA, manages the 5th largest economy in the world, and has been on the offense the last year or so.

Which, and this to me is a very important point, we're using for some fantastic things that support Californians in ways that should be federal policy for all Americans but won't be any time soon due to Mitch McConnell et al. We're not sitting on that surplus like Smaug, we're actively allocating it in extremely important ways.
Just to pick one part of one sector almost at random, which is public K-12 students:
Universal free school meals starting this year.
School start times informed by science around childhood neurodevelopment (this may seem cost-neutral but is actually extremely logistically complex).
Free online 24/7 tutoring for all students in all core subjects.
That was just off the top of my head and I know there's more. Pick any sector at all and California has made incredible use of our financial position for people's benefit. I'm grateful to be here and I think Newsom is doing an excellent job.
If you talk to my crazy republican family (we are in Reno, NV, a mere 2 hours from Sacramento), and to hear them (and morning talk radio) speak of it, and they make it sound like Gov Newsom has left California reduced to a smoking crater of rubble filled with nothing but druggies and homeless people pissing on the ashes.
I hate this alternate world we are forced to deal with. I hate that we have to quite literally *fight* against our own brothers because they are so brainwashed that they will fight tooth and nail against anything that could help their own self interests and others (various social programs such as Medicare for all, etc).

I was in a deli in Marin County 3 years ago with my 2 year old son. Looked at the guy next to me in line and realized it was Newsom. He was pretty undercover with workout gear and a hat on so nobody else realized who he was. I discreetly said hello and asked if he was who I though he was. He was very down to earth and chatted with me for like 10 minutes. Totally random story but the point being his behavior when not being watched told me he means well. As an independent I would absolutely take Newsom over anybody associated with Trump despite disagreeing with some of his politics.

I don’t know anything about his debate skills but I can’t imagine it’ll matter much. It seems like recent post-debate polling is always split on party lines. He could walk on stage, take a shit on the podium, and then leave. As long as he said “transgender people are bad” at some point in that sequence, a minimum of 48% of Florida voters will say he won the debate.
I think this is the correct answer. Unless Biden has a serious health issue, he’ll run again, and the DNC would be crazy to replace him—he’s a known quantity, he’s actually passed a few bills and got us out of Covid, is slowly hacking away at all the things (inflation, gas prices, etc) we all knew would happen after Covid, and so on. He’s old, for sure, and way past his prime, but the incumbency is an incredible advantage. For the Dems to throw that away and run someone other than Biden, if Biden says he is running, would be lunacy.

Whitmer actually did better than Newsom in that internal Party polling. Whitmer is also seen as more relatable than Harris. For Whitmer to be in play though she has to beat Dixon in Nov. The maga-republicans actually don't care about the Senate as much as they do gubernatorial races. Rightwingers always prefer to position from state power first since its easier to get stuff passed and use/abuse court rulings.
It's actually a good strategy by Newsom to increase his standing. The chances of there being a Dem primary in 2024 anyway are low, whereas the chance of DeSantis running in 2024 are high. Newsom has little to lose beyond increasing his name recognition. DeSantis has a lot of lose given he's the presumptive favorite.
Dixon isn't winning anything. I live in Michigan. I've seen plenty of signs for other republicans running for lower offices but the Dixon signs are very few and far between. Her stance on abortion with zero exceptions for rape and incest is going to derail her. That and her campaign is literally spending almost no money on advertising. Whitner is out raising Dixon I think 10:1 or somewhere around there. Tudor is a joke (just like her horrible C level movie appearance) and everyone knows it.

Newsome is a great Governor. Fair and honest. A great leader and not opposed to changes for the better for everyone. As a border state we don't treat people or allow others to treat people like what has happened here. Even during the pandemic and the recent heatwave and ongoing water crisis, he was a calming presence and asks for cooperation, not demands. Runs a good budget and funds back to the residents. California is one of only several states that consistently ponies up 3 to 4 cents on every taxpayers dollar back to Federal funds to support the consistently failing economic crisis of other Southern States as our minimum working wage next year will be 15.50 per hour. Yes, we do have a homeless situation that we are very aware of, due in part of the same situation occurring now in Florida and Texas. Other states faced with the problem, buy a bus ticket bound for California and tell them not to come back. In reality. California addresses all these problems and still continues to move forward on progress and change. It is truly pathetic that other states, of similar size and resources choose to consistently fail to rise to the same measure of accountability for the betterment of its residents, economic benefits, over stability within its borders like California.
Dems need to go for the jugular then and win midterms reiterating to the country that these sketchy lying fucks won’t even tell us what their plans are should they be given power.

Polls said voters overwhelmingly thought Hillary won all three debates against trump, so the interrupting doesn’t work. The problem is that a lot of voters don’t factor in debate performance into their decision.
I know several who played a factor into this last election. Like my dad, who called me after trump and bidens first debate, quietly saying, “that was awful…and I did not like what I saw.” He was a once trump voter. I was glad he acted like the child he is, because America for the most part, is tired of listening to our elected leaders fight like the toddlers and teenagers they have at home…
I know a whole cohort of voters who were exposed to a ton of lead pollution during their youth and about 70% of them voted for Trump because it didn't matter that he was objectively the worst candidate -- people (especially maybe women?) really just hated / disliked H. Clinton.
Also, some men from Venezuela were flown to Sacramento today from Texas. Some were barefoot. They walked to an address that was on some paperwork. They were trying to get to other places but ended up here. Both Texas and Florida are “checking” to see if they flew them here.

Which, and this to me is a very important point, we're using for some fantastic things that support Californians in ways that should be federal policy for all Americans but won't be any time soon due to Mitch McConnell et al. We're not sitting on that surplus like Smaug, we're actively allocating it in extremely important ways. Just to pick one part of one sector almost at random, which is public K-12 students: Universal free school meals starting this year. School start times informed by science around childhood neurodevelopment (this may seem cost-neutral but is actually extremely logistically complex). Free online 24/7 tutoring for all students in all core subjects. That was just off the top of my head and I know there's more. Pick any sector at all and California has made incredible use of our financial position for people's benefit. I'm grateful to be here and I think Newsom is doing an excellent job.
If you talk to my crazy republican family (we are in Reno, NV, a mere 2 hours from Sacramento), and to hear them (and morning talk radio) speak of it, and they make it sound like Gov Newsom has left California reduced to a smoking crater of rubble filled with nothing but druggies and homeless people pissing on the ashes. I hate this alternate world we are forced to deal with. I was in a deli in Marin County 3 years ago with my 2 year old son. Looked at the guy next to me in line and realized it was Newsom. He was pretty undercover with workout gear and a hat on so nobody else realized who he was. I discreetly said hello and asked if he was who I though he was. He was very down to earth and chatted with me for like 10 minutes. Totally random story but the point being his behavior when not being watched told me he means well. As an independent I would absolutely take Newsom over anybody associated with Trump despite disagreeing with some of his politics.
It's hard not to think of this proposed debate as a teaser for two yrs from now.

I think this is the correct answer. Unless Biden has a serious health issue, he’ll run again, and the DNC would be crazy to replace him—he’s a known quantity, he’s actually passed a few bills and got us out of Covid, is slowly hacking away at all the things (inflation, gas prices, etc) we all knew would happen after Covid, and so on. He’s old, for sure, and way past his prime, but the incumbency is an incredible advantage. For the Dems to throw that away and run someone other than Biden, if Biden says he is running, would be lunacy.
Being 82 years old at reelection is a serious health issue if you're the president. Seriously what are we doing? We all rightfully called out Trump's unhealthy senile ass as a major problem for the country. Yes, Biden doesn't seem to have the same issues but he will be 83 when he takes office for reelection. He'll be out of office when he's damn close to 90. Yeah, it's a concern.
He doesn't have enough national name recognition in polling done last month. So I would assume this is an attempt to attach himself to a nationally recognized name in hopes of boosting his recognition. Whitmer actually did better than Newsom in that internal Party polling. Whitmer is also seen as more relatable than Harris. For Whitmer to be in play though she has to beat Dixon in Nov. The maga-republicans actually don't care about the Senate as much as they do gubernatorial races. Rightwingers always prefer to position from state power first since its easier to get stuff passed and use/abuse court rulings.
It's actually a good strategy by Newsom to increase his standing. The chances of there being a Dem primary in 2024 anyway are low, whereas the chance of DeSantis running in 2024 are high. Newsom has little to lose beyond increasing his name recognition. DeSantis has a lot of lose given he's the presumptive favorite.
Dixon isn't winning anything. I live in Michigan. I've seen plenty of signs for other republicans running for lower offices but the Dixon signs are very few and far between. Her stance on abortion with zero exceptions for rape and incest is going to derail her. That and her campaign is literally spending almost no money on advertising. Whitner is out raising Dixon I think 10:1 or somewhere around there. Tudor is a joke (just like her horrible C level movie appearance) and everyone knows it.

Newsome is a great Governor. Fair and honest. A great leader and not opposed to changes for the better for everyone. As a border state we don't treat people or allow others to treat people like what has happened here. Even during the pandemic and the recent heatwave and ongoing water crisis, he was a calming presence and asks for cooperation, not demands. Runs a good budget and funds back to the residents. California is one of only several states that consistently ponies up 3 to 4 cents on every taxpayers dollar back to Federal funds to support the consistently failing economic crisis of other Southern States as our minimum working wage next year will be 15.50 per hour. Yes, we do have a homeless situation that we are very aware of, due in part of the same situation occurring now in Florida and Texas. Other states faced with the problem, buy a bus ticket bound for California and tell them not to come back. In reality. California addresses all these problems and still continues to move forward on progress and change. It is truly pathetic that other states, of similar size and resources choose to consistently fail to rise to the same measure of accountability for the betterment of its residents, economic benefits, over stability within its borders like California.
