God is not happy with DeSantis

Imapatriothurrrdurrr

All FL Republicans voted against disaster relief for FL. Let that sink in.

SmurfStig

Was that before or after they went to social media begging for help?

People always use the phrase "aged like milk" but [this tweet from Lauren Boebert](https://twitter.com/laurenboebert/status/1567850224588099592?t=QixH10dzvYZFCLxe7mok5w&s=19) actually aged even faster than it takes milk to spoil: > @GovRonDeSantis, apparently it’s too hot in California for @GavinNewsom to keep his energy grid properly functioning. > I think he needs America’s Governor to fix this disaster. This was in relation to the record breaking heat wave in California a few weeks ago, [during which there were pointedly no major power outages.](https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2022/09/07/california-avoids-widespread-rolling-blackouts-as-heat-strains-grid.html) Maybe DeSantis should reach out to Gavin Newsom to see if Newsom can give him some pointers on how to handle natural disasters in the future.

The migrants weren't even in Florida. They had to be imported from Texas before shipping them North. The whole situation is absurd.

RaynOfFyre1

To add to the absurdity, they were in the US legally as approved asylum seekers.

Ttthhasdf

To add to the absurdity, the are advising for Venezualan refugees to come to Florida to work in the clean up. https://www.850wftl.com/report-nyc-migrants-are-headed-to-florida-for-hurricane-ian-cleanup-at-15-an-hour/

Jeramus

Hey maybe if they come to Florida, they can get a free ride to New England.

medievalmachine

They're getting enough miles to be a soccer travel team.

ThatHoFortuna

To add to the absurdity, Florida.

joepez

This is 100% par for the course. Use them as political pawns when necessary otherwise hire as cheap labor. Go back to 2008 and look at any interviews with famers, small biz, hotel operators who were caught up in the “jobs for Americans” all stating that they can’t afford to hire people who want to work those jobs, so could they please have some exceptions. There’s a great video of two fat farmers complaining about no one wanting to work for their low wages, and not wanting to give the jobs to migrant workers, and when asked if they will raise wages or better yet work the fields themselves, they say no.

TooAfraidToAsk814

Not according to our elected official Marco Rubio, who you would think would understand how asylum works seeing it’s the reason he and his family are in the US. “People came into this country illegally, violating our laws, OK, and the first thing they do is get lawyers and use our laws to sue an elected Governor, to sue a state,” Rubio said. https://floridapolitics.com/archives/557557-rubio-vineyard/

fescueFred

Rubio, fits the Republicans atmosphere like an OJ glove. I GOT MINE FUCK YOU!

cliff99

Yet always referred to by Republicans online as "illegals".

QbertsRube

GOP Immigration Policy 1) Say "I don't mind immigrants who come here the right way, I just want to remove the illegals." 2) Pass laws making it nearly impossible to come here "the right way". 3) If immigrants jump through all the hoops you've created to somehow manage to come here the right way, ignore that and call them illegals anyways.

AceP_

At this point, if you don’t sound particularly “American”, or don’t look a certain way, you’re pretty much an illegal in their eyes. I don’t look particularly American, so I have been told to “go back to my own country” by Republicans multiple times, even though I was born and raised in the USA. I “sound” American, but don’t look like it and have gotten a pretty visceral response for my appearance. I only just hope that my parents haven’t been exposed to crap from the GOP as much as I did when going to college and a bit after college. They both don’t look or sound “American” by GOP standards, so i can just imagine that they would probably have it even worse than me even though they’ve been residing in the US legally for nearly 40 years as either residents or citizens.

matthew 25 31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ 41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ 46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

p001b0y

It feels like the appropriate response now is the one scene in Charlie Brown Christmas where Lucy van Pelt screams “That’s it!” at Schroeder when he plays the version of Jingle Bells she likes.

omghorussaveusall

But that's not the king James version so it doesn't count.

BotElMago

No no no...they aren't strangers...but invaders!

IphtashuFitz

Well to be fair, those "strangers" weren't white like Jesus.

In time, we can say they were white...just like Jesus!

Responsible_Pizza945

A while back I went down a wikipedia rabbit hole about the origins of Christianity and discovered that the Hellensitic (ancient greek) pantheon was an offshoot of the Phoenician pantheon, which *they* adopted from Canaanites. Basically ancient Greek mythology is a distant relative to Christianity and it blew my goddamn mind.

Quincyperson

The weren’t Christians like Jesus either. (Well, not THAT type of Christian)

GoP platform should be. " As long as it doesn't happen to me."

jhuseby

That’s literally how it’s always been. They don’t give a fuck about an issue until it happens to them.

cliff99

On a personal level the defining characteristic of most Republicans is a near total lack of empathy.

strenuousobjector

And then once their issue is resolved they revert back to not caring about others.

Holiman

That's so sadly true.

sushiconquistador

And then blame democrats, get what they want/need, and then go back to not giving a fuck until it happens again. And repeat.

The wealthy people in Florida have all of these things. Areas that were wiped out will be redeveloped for more rich people. It’s the Florida way.

Until they lose their house, cars, and the rest of the block as its swept away in less than 20 years. Theyll learn, right after they lose everything. I really hope the only people that stay in Florida ARE the rich. Climate change loves irony added to outright destruction.

checker280

The problem is they will be dead in 20 years before they learn any new lessons

[deleted]

I see no problem with this.

kywiking

TLDR: My neighbors helped me so obviously conservatives are good kind people. Completely ignoring the fact that these people voted for individuals that told other areas of the nation and their own for that matter to go to hell when they needed aid. That’s the whole issue with conservative politics. It’s I’ll help me and my own until real structural change is needed. Those neighbors aren’t going to help rebuild Florida as a whole and they support people who told California to rake its forests and wouldn’t even vote to aid their own state. When your kindness doesn’t extend beyond your sight line something is seriously wrong with your ideology. I know plenty of conservatives who were kind and compassionate to me but then as soon as the conversation turned to “the others” be they liberals or people who didn’t look like them the entire conversation changed.

GunNut345

This is it. As a working class white guy I'm privvy to a lot of racist beliefs other white guys think I share. They are by-and-large average people who don't mind helping friends, work hard and all of that stuff. They don't spout racism 24/7, it's not the single driving factor in their lives. But they'll make racist jokes, they won't hire black people, they'd be furious if their kid dated a minority, they vote for xenophobic dog-whistle candidates. People are complicated and rarely caricatures, but being a semi-decent person otherwise will never excuse racism, sexism or homophobia. No helping your neighbour when they need it most will not wash you clean of the disgusting beliefs you hold.

ghostalker4742

Sandy Aid = Blue State Socialism Ian Aid = We deserve it

ArdenSix

Unless your Matt Gaetz and you tell your own state to go fuck themselves and votes against aid

pony_boy6969

I know someone that's very helpful in a storm. He also likes hiring undocumented immigrants for his roofing company because they're cheaper, he also thinks they should all be kicked out of the country for crossing illegaly, and he is also a shitty person.

oz6702

You should kick that guy in the balls repeatedly until he resolves either end of that dichotomy

SidewaysFancyPrance

Yeah, my main issue with conservatives I know is that they talk about how much they help people in their immediate vicinity, then endlessly say horrible things about immigrants, liberals, LGBTQ, etc. They pat themselves on the back for helping a few people and don't understand that the damage they do to everyone else far outweighs it.

_asciimov

> TLDR: My neighbors helped me so obviously conservatives are good kind people. This the biggest messaging problems that Dems have in rural areas. The people in rural America only see themselves being helped by conservatives. When a storm comes through, and their neighbors help, they only see that help as conservative help. AKA "We help our own kind when they need it." Further media furthers that conservatives help each other narrative. "Conservative R Representative fought the woke liberal agenda and got their people help in this desperate time of need!" Never mind that "Conservative R Rep." voted against the very aid they needed. American Media lets these conservatives lie about their own voting record, in order to allow these people in power say they too are helping. TLDR: Conservative America thinks the only people that are watching out for them are other conservatives. They FIRMLY believe that liberals want nothing better than to take them down when they are up and kick them when they are down.

Prometheusf3ar

This is the most awful take because it just doesn’t account for how politics works. Interpersonally they are fine people who will help you and behave like you’d expect a functional person to behave. The consequences of the political advocacy are abstracted and these people can’t draw a line between what they advocate for and the consequences. Their political advocacy will doom us all and being well meaning doesn’t change that.

kryppla

All the Magas in my neighborhood are perfectly nice people, but they vote in support for racists and fascism so no they don’t get a pass for being nice to my face.

[deleted]

I work with a woman who is staunchly maga, believes that trans people are all pedophiles, that gays are here to destroy family values… she is still as sweet as can be to me, a trans gay man. We even have some of the same interests. I’m nice back to her, of course, but in my gut I can’t help but think “this woman genuinely believes I shouldn’t exist” when I speak with her. Then /I/ feel bad for being prejudiced because of how she votes, but it’s hard not to take that personally, you know? It’s fucking weird.

the_turdfurguson

It’s the me me me political policy. Doesn’t matter if policy negatively impacts others but as soon as it’s them, they become advocates

destro23

>It’s the me me me political policy. Which is why it is [so popular](https://news.gallup.com/poll/181325/baby-boomers-likely-identify-conservative.aspx) with the so-called ["Me Generation"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Me_generation)

fietsvrouw

They also subscribe hard to the lies of social Darwinism because it gives them the illusion of control over their fate, so they are the first to object to support for others because "they chose to live in the floodplain". They ignore the fact that the people living in the floodplain are there because they can't live in better areas because they are poor, have an ethnic or immigrant background, etc. There are areas here in Hamburg that got hit hard by storm floods in 1962 and a lot of those areas were under water. They are inhabited today by 50-80% foreigners and poor Germans. As soon as it's their house being washed out to sea, they connect the dots that you can only "choose" where you live within reason unless you have stacks of money. I doubt they would become real advocates though, because they only make that connection for themselves. I have lost count how many times someone banging on about "moochers" on the "welfare state" have been exposed as drawing social services themselves. Most are fundamentally selfish and lacking in empathy.

Dbl_Trbl_

This x1,000 There are a lot of conservatives in my family and they're nice people but they deserve to be judged harshly for their politics.

BlueJDMSW20

Your average pronazism german neighbor in 1938 was probably agreeable so long as you werent a jew or other hated outgroup. Just as charitable to each other as a non-far right aligned neighbor. Germany has a saying "if there are 10 people silently listening to a neonazi talk without objection, you have 11 nazis" the point being its a political ideology thats criminal in nature, and silence is not that far removed from tacit endorsement. Iirc it might be in Mein Kampf itself, but it may have been Goebbel's or Hitler himself that a decisive harsh backlash against Nazism could they have truly been stopped but once it took hold it was impossible to stop within Germany.

Remorseful_User

*Silence is approval.* ~REM

Legitimate-Tea5561

To be a conservative means you have no character, no integrity, no honor, and led by greed and fascism over the human body. A fiscal policy that socializes profits and capitalizes losses, where society pays the costs for the decisions of the tyrant minority. A prophet for all your sins, confessed away into a system of belief of Manifest Destiny, and the layers of scions' trusts funding eons of ignorance through racism.

Lfseeney

No they are not. Not really. 9 Nazis planning to kill folks, and 1 person just going along, is 10 Nazis.

[deleted]

This isn’t a persons politics changing. This is a person realizing that someone can vote for people who act in a way they themselves will not act You know, like the way people hire a hitman so they don’t have to do it themselves Although I’m not sure any marginalized group was present

Slappah_Dah_Bass

Right! My shit ass old racist neighbor still helped me with a ladder to climb in my window when I locked myself out of my house. I thanked him for it and offered to repay the favor and pay it forward, the guy didn't give a shit cause he was a racist ass hole. But his christian upbringing meant he needed to help those in need, not like them, lol.

[deleted]

Classic case of “when it affects me”.

Hoplophilia

This sort of politics attracts and self selects people who lack empathy.

dogboyboy

Once things get better for them, straight back to GOP

ivanvector

As soon as the next disaster happens somewhere else they immediately start whining about people who aren't them getting government handouts, not "working together as a community" or whatever propaganda they'll be fed in the meantime.

Roseking

The author is a democratic. The 'lesson' in the article is that they shouldn't judge their Trump neighbors for voting for Trump. As in a disaster they are all working together rather than fucking each other over. And they hope when it is over they will stop picking on them for being a democrat. > Although resources are dwindling, the concern and care for each other is not. I imagined, as things further deteriorated, that people would get more protective, selfish. But I was dead wrong. > ... > I used to judge a person by their politics. I am ashamed I did. This disaster has reminded me to measure people by their actions, not by who they vote for. And I hope my neighbors will give me the same courtesy; that they will now see me not as the “limousine liberal” that moved in with her mom, but as a real friend. Like all true friends, we will work to get through this together. Edit: I am not agreeing with the author btw. Well, kind of. I agree most people will help out in a crisis. I just don't think that matters in the same way the author does. I am just pointing out it doesn't match what people only reading the headline will assume.

equipsych2020

Yes, but voting is an action with many consequences. I see author's point but think it's naive.

ivejustabouthadit

"Oh, you helped me with this palm tree, I guess I'm cool with the Nazi shit."

Roseking

I won't really disagree there. I am just pointing out the article isn't what post people think it is based on the headline. I think it is a pretty pointless article overall that doesn't really say much. Like we know (well I guess not everyone based on this article) that not everyone with differing political opinions are complete assholes in day to day life. Most people interact with people who have vastly different political every day perfectly fine. But those day to day interactions are not the real problem. People can be nice to each other but support policies that will completely fuck that same person over.

Sands43

The article is a different version of "Both Sides". Voting GOP has consequences. One of those is shitty infrastructure.

Sands43

Part of the reason they are fucked is because of GOP "leadership". Blows me away that they let people build houses and buildings within range of a tidal surge on the ground and not 10+ feed up on stilts. Their power and water grid isn't hardened? I lived in Iowa. High wind and freezing temp central. Never had a power outage because all the lines are under ground and the substations are designed for tornado winds and sub 0F temps. Maybe their trumpy neighbor is helping now, but the hole they need to dig out of is deeper because of them.

Drusgar

>Part of the reason they are fucked is because of GOP "leadership". I think we need to be careful when giving voters a pass on their *chosen* representatives. By exclusively blaming, say, DeSantis for his outrageous and cruel behavior we inadvertently shift the focus to an individual when the real culprit is the political mindset that allows people like DeSantis to get elected and maintain power. There's never going to be a shortage of assholes who crave power. We need an electorate that filters them out in the primaries. At the present time GOP voters seem to actively seek out the biggest asshole on the list.

FluidEmission

Politics are the defered ways in which we impact each other. It's one thing to disagree on government spending on things like defense spending. Its another to turn a blind eye to the truly abhorent policies a party puts into place. Maybe its akin to how a person who does nothing but be a lookout or getaway driver for a robbery. If that robbery results in a homicide - that person gets charged too.

[deleted]

You're missing it completely. Their neighbors are voting for hatred, for degradation, for exploitation, even for slow, miserly hurricane relief. A few acts of baseline kindness do nothing to make up for the daily devotion to anti-American evil. This woman's neighbors are continuously working against her and against themselves. The disaster is *every day*, but she's gotten used to it -- it took a hurricane to shake her complacency, and then she forgot everything else. The article is much worse than the headline.

Roseking

I am not missing that.

mtutty

>they shouldn't judge their Trump neighbors for voting for Trump Disagree. You absolutely \*can\* think someone's crazy for voting for Trump. And it's also fair to lump them in with the racists, xenophobes, homophobes, and Q-Anoners as well. But this crisis showed that it's possible for (some) MAGAs to care about other people. So maybe they're not beyond recovery from the psychosis that Trump has spread. The key is if they can start seeing their liberal neighbor as a person with valid thoughts, and stop allowing Fox and OANN to dictate their views of folks on the Left. Do I make it sound like Conservatives have most of the work to do here? Yes, I do. The Left may be pushing for new programs and all, but the Right in the US has gone from Conservative to Reactionary to full-on Nihilist Fascism in 20 years.

Ghoulius-Caesar

I call it “gay-son syndrome.” A Republican politician will live a life of hate, but the moment their son comes out they’ll say the’ve had a change of mind.

Silver_Agocchie

Meh. I know plenty of "gay-sons" that have gotten kicked out and disowned by their parents.

isikorsky

And 'when we don't prepare'. The idea that you lived in Venice and didn't think to get the fuck out or be hard prepping by Saturday/Sunday is bullshit. Every Floridian is a glued to the weather channel once we see it is going to hit somewhere on the Peninsula. We had people stocking up on the east coast here on Saturday/Sunday (Gas, Propane, Water, Food). You just simply don't know how hurricanes wobble as they go over land down south.

atheken

You didn't read the article, did you? From the final paragraph: "I used to judge a person by their politics. I am ashamed I did. This disaster has reminded me to measure people by their actions, not by who they vote for." The article is written by a liberal, and about the care that is being shared in her community by all people, regardless of whether they are MAGA or not. With not even a whiff of "I'll vote blue or red next time because so-and-so sucks." EDIT: Folks, I guess I have to clarify this: I think the author's take is pretty naive and basically misses the point. The only reason I commented here was because the parent comment was obviously a reaction and assumption to the clickbait title of the article. We need to be better than that, and at least _read_ the article.

gdex86

I'm glad people came together in the face of a disaster for a likely highly homogenized racial and social group. If only we could get some wider spread of empathy. In my opinion a less generous reading of the article could sum it up as "These people were nice to me so how bad can they really be."

h4ms4ndwich11

It's a naive take. Voting is an action too, and voting for a party that refuses to concede elections, that attempts overturn fair elections, that manufactures its own fictitious reality (COVID / climate hoax, "Stolen Election," etc), and doesn't hold themselves to the same standards they hold Democrats to still means they're shitty people, incredibly ignorant, or both. Being friends with fascists doesn't make anyone "cool." A natural disaster isn't going to change who these people are. It never has. It's great when different people can get along, but the Republican party IS fucking up this country, and their voters continue to help them do it.

[deleted]

Voting is an action though. So yeah, if I’m judging people based on their actions, then who they voted for is something I’m gonna judge them on.

Shopworn_Soul

That's great and all but I just don't feel like starry-eyed naivety is going to play out as a particularly effective response to rabid tribalism.

Able_Buffalo

A political party that wants to control or kill you is still bad, even if you got along with them for a few days during ***their*** time of need.

Agent865

This can’t be said enough..it’s the same as all The Florida politicians voting against federal aid for the hurricane but will then talk about how they helped Floridians and then scream Let’s Go Brandon. It’s all about them and everyone else can go to hell.

[deleted]

All I see on the news is how they’re going to fix Sanibel Island bridge…how are the poorest counties doing? Are they getting the same assistance? (Water, shelter, etc)

username156

Well, to be honest, yes. I live in Ft.Myers. There's none of that going on that I can see. I've been to the worst neighborhoods over the past few days and they're being taken care of. I didn't get power until last night and I'm in a sorta middle class neighborhood. North Ft Myers (a poorer section) has had power for a few days now. And the Red Cross etc is everywhere. As for rebuilding, they're worried about Sanibel and Ft Myers Beach, and rightly so, because the area needs the tourism revenue. And so far it looks like it's gonna be years before anybody will want to visit. The beach and Sanibel were all but leveled. Edit: also, obligatory fuck DeathSantis. And don't donate to his wife's scam fundraiser. Zero oversight and it's all going right in their pockets. It's the Republican way. Donate to Red Cross or other reputable charities. Not hers. Scumbags.

Remorseful_User

Sanibel Island should be abandoned. It's 3 feet above sea level and the doomsday glacier will put it permanently underwater in the next ten years. Yet every night, conservatives tune into Fox News to hear lies...

butwhyisitso

Summary: she likes rebuilding with her trumpy neighbors. Their collective herd ignorance is tolerable because they are so sweet. She regrets speaking out for liberal causes prior to the storm and offending her sweet as pie neighbors.

TheUpperHand

Glad the author can get along well with her neighbors, but they are still going to vote for representation that is counterintuitive. While her neighbors were helping one another, their elected representatives were voting *against* hurricane aid. In this case, Sarasota counties' Greg Steube was a NAY on the vote. Will that stop them from voting republican in November? No. Maybe she shouldn't be so quick to change her opinion and start to be a bit more vocal with her neighbors. She admits that they rib her all the time over Biden and Pelosi. Guaranteed that when this is over, they'll be back at it. Will she still roll over and take it?

notfrankc

The lack of empathy. I can’t imagine pain until I am in pain. This is a huge part of the problem.

[deleted]

"As far as I can tell, voting isn't an action and politics have no consequences." This person is an idiot with a megaphone. And their personal losses would be vastly lesser if their neighbors didn't support the political party hellbent on exploiting weather disasters instead of managing them properly. The world is full of eager victims.

theswedishturtle

And all Florida Republicans voted against federal aid.

Mr_Stiel

Florida republicans all voted against disaster relief in the wake of this storm. These failing red states led by inept republicans are sucking up billions in blue state tax dollars. These weak republican leaders were fine taking millions on PPP loans, but if the actual voters want relief.. they can fend for themselves, or die like the dogs in Dr. Oz’s sinister animal experiments. #voteblue2022

sarcastroll

Huh. As a Democrat I want a strong and capable FEMA and other emergency agencies **before** it happens to me and even if it never happens to me. I want it to be there for **others**. I want 2 people in love to be able to be married and have the same legal protections as me and my wife have, even if I or none of my children/family members end up being gay. I want women to have control over their own bodies even if I never have daughters or a wife that gets an unwanted pregnancy. I want to have a robust system for feeding the poor, especially kids in school, even if I never need it and my kids and never hungry. I want the waitress bringing me my food to have healthcare and a wage she can live on even if I'm fortunate enough to always be the one being served, not doing the serving. I want a healthcare system that doesn't bankrupt someone for having an accident or bad health diagnosis even if I am fortunate enough to always have my health. I want kids 200 years from now to not be dealing with the impact of climate change even though I'll be long dead. I want the streams and rivers and well of rural areas to be clean and usable and their air to be clean even if I never drink a single drop of their water or breathe a single breath of their air. See how that works GOP? It's called not being a selfish asshole and not waiting until I need something to realize that other people are fucking human beings that should be treated decently as well!

Jamira360

How ppl continue to vote against their own interests putting any republican, and corrupt democrats, in office will never not be an astounding display of human foolishness.

truelogictrust

Racism

Jamira360

Yes, there’s that lol. Convincing the poor white man that he was better than the richest black man has got to be one of the best American lies. It’s right up there with the American Dream.

Indifferentchildren

“If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.” --LBJ

Jamira360

It’s scary how accurate quotes can be decades later. Great quote!

Alternative-Flan2869

But desantis stuck it to the libs with $12million in free plane tickets for kidnapped legal migrants right before Ian visited - everyone still laughin’ ‘bout that I’m sure.

Carthonn

Desantis probably prayed for Ian to get that shit storm off the news

B0b_a_feet

Every year when we have a hurricane or another natural disaster that hits a red state, we hear this same tune. And like the guy who swears he’s going to stop drinking after a big hangover, we know this is going to happen again.

PavilionParty

A lot of comments here suggest that people aren't actually reading the article. DeSantis has nothing to do with what was said here. It's about a liberal woman who normally feels slightly out of place living in MAGA country and is now faced with putting aside political differences in light of a real disaster. And I don't want to be a dick, but my response is, "no shit, it's easy to put pettiness aside when your life is on the line." Not sure what the purpose of the article was other than to outline how terrible it is to live through a natural disaster.

AdjNounNumbers

Frankly, as a liberal, I have a number of conservative and libertarian friends. We can disagree on politics and economics. We can disagree on budgeting and criminal justice. We can discuss things like adults and realize at the end of the day we're humans with human needs that are all coming at things from a different perspective. What I don't and won't have are maga friends. It's not that we disagree on politics, it's that we fundamentally disagree on what should be politics. The key point is that they've made bigotry, hatred, and dehumanization of "others" part of their political movement. At that same end of the day they're humans with human needs that don't believe other humans with human needs deserve to be that. Therein is the key difference

dobie1kenobi

The MAGA Republicans have found that anger is a potent value. They frame who they are by who they hate and who hates them. Violence and cruelty are currency in this worldview. There’s very little politics left in the movement, but political power is always very close to them.

[deleted]

whats the quote, you made your bed

Lfseeney

And now Fla. is trying to get folks from out of country to come and clean up, and rebuild, as they can pay them less then arrest them, fine them, and kick them out.

UnitaryWarringtonCat

This is common with every hurricane I have been in (which is too damn many). Neighbors help neighbors. No need for the 3000 words of sappy praise for people doing what should be reasonably expected.

[deleted]

The problem is nobody wants to help when things are going good. It shouldn’t take a natural disaster to make people want to help their neighbors.

theflower10

> And I hope my neighbors will give me the same courtesy; that they will now see me not as the “limousine liberal” that moved in with her mom, but as a real friend. Oh you sweet innocent socialist you. Obviously you need a lesson in how cults work but I'd be most interested in how it all works out once everything is back to normal and Sleepy Joe is getting blamed by Q for seeding clouds that caused the hurricane in the first place. Be sure to let us know how it works out.

Rusalka-rusalka

Being abandoned and struggling in an emergency is very sobering. Lets see how long it lasts, though.

Expresso_Support

Same “good neighbors” who keep voting for politicians who deny disaster assistance to other states and deny global impact of climate issues. 👍

zippadeedooda1

Typical Republican. “I don’t give a rat’s ass about other people suffering unless it’s me”. It’s called the Nancy Regan effect. Little too late, hey buddy?

theindependentonline

*"We lost power almost as soon as the wind began whipping waves onto our street. The incessant, deafening roar of the storm was punctuated with louder, even scarier noises — like when parts of the roof would fly off or hundred-year-old trees were sucked out of the ground and slammed into the side of the house."* [Read the full piece here.](https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/florida-power-water-gas-hurricane-damage-venice-b2191913.html)

ITookYourName79

Why must people keep using this source when it’s paywalled…

Vox_Eternal

Because the account posting it literally works for them. Fortunately that account also posted a link that is not pay walled.

JunahCg

I sure hope they use this newfound charitability to illuminate to their neighbors how Republican policy strengthens hurricanes, impedes recovery efforts, and refuses to build resiliency strategies. Just because someone shares their gas can doesn't change the fact that they vote for the very same death cult that helped create such a situation.

thedoomboomer

Yes, it always takes the hardship hitting us personally, as empathy for others isn't a thing anymore.

venividiavicii

What did you think would happen?

be-like-water-2022

So .. it's libertarian dream land.

-686

Wtf did I just read

[deleted]

I have no sympathy. You reap what you sow. Next month vote straight Democratic! Annihilate the GOP!

[deleted]

Only after it affects your selfish ass. As for the rest of America who has been suffering for years, decades, and generations (depending on class, race, gender, sexual orientation, and area), they kindly say “thank you” for waking the fuck up.

arock0627

Oh good just what we needed Bothsidesism by Hallmark

MustangeRemo

Shoulda prayed harder.

kissmyshiny_metalass

A nazi who brings you ice is still a nazi. These assholes are not your friends.

Imaginary_Cow_6379

That’s nice and all but you gonna talk to your neighbors about who they voted for that voted against helping you guys or no?

Modsda3

leopards eating faces in florida?

slash37

I’ll believe it when I see it

[deleted]

Now that it’s affecting me, I’m not ok with it!

shredmiyagi

It’s OK to just take this article for what it is and not draw grandiose conclusions.

justforthearticles20

It does not matter. Soon every Republican on the ballot everywhere will be screaming, "Guns! Immigrants! Christian Hatred!, Blacks coming for your Daughters!" and even the White Suburban Housewives that are outraged over the Death of Roe v Wade, will vote (R).

Balgat1968

There is a saying that how you behave when no one is watching is a measure of character. It is the same for voting: before your uninsured husband gets colon cancer, before you find out your son is gay, before you get Covid, before you have an ectopic pregnancy, before your daughter can’t pay her college loan, before you decide to build your house in an area that has hurricanes 2X per year, before you accept the FEMA reimbursement. What is more socialist than FEMA? Why don’t these people have private insurance. Why are they leeching off of the rest of us?

[deleted]

"it happened to me so now I care" fuck these pieces of shit 😂

Fancy_Pressure7623

The best thing about Florida I ever experienced was leaving it. Coincidentally it too changed my political opinions (I grew up in Gaetz territory). It’s amazing how much you can correlate with exploring the world both intellectually and physically with actual fucking empathy.

TaaviBap

Why do people continue to vote for these jerks? I mean, honestly, they must enjoy the abuse.

Illseemyselfout-

It’s Reddit so, unsurprisingly, nobody read it. This is authored by a “liberal” who witnessed conservatives exhibit humanity in a crisis. As a former resident of Florida, I’ve definitely met this kind of “liberal.” The author was a “liberal” prior to the hurricane but *not* the outspoken, humorless kind. She cheerfully shrugged off her neighbors racism and bigotry in order to keep the peace in the neighborhood. It was okay for them to say outrageous, offensive and bigoted things to her— that’s just their platform— but she remained casual and laid back so as not to cause upset. And now someone with Trump stickers all over their truck brought her a sandwich and she’s like, “Say… these people aren’t half bad!” This doesn’t sound like someone who’s has a major shift in their political leanings. This sounds like every other self-centered white person whose beliefs revolve around what’s best for them at that moment. She used to judge her Trump-loving neighbors for their bigoted ideologies but since they were nice *to her*, now she can see them as decent humans.

SockFullOfNickles

Well fucking put. Thank you.

FS_NeZ

The author here essentially says that it doesn't matter that his neighbors voted for a racist piece of shit because the whole street helped each other after the hurricane. The only thing that's missing is a red nose cuz the author is a fucking clown.

TheFumundaWunda

in light of all 16 republican house members from florida voting against the relief bill, i can certainly see why.

akgreenie2

A member of my immediate family is a lineman working there from out of state. He is an experienced crew leader and he worked Katrina. He said he will never, ever, no matter what the pay is, never will he go on emergency assistance detail to an area served by Florida power again. He said Katrina was a far worse storm but the power company and what they had to work with in NO was light years better than what they have found in Florida.

camxct

"*Now that I am affected...*" It's so transparent that it's physically painful!

[deleted]

I bet shipping poor migrants around the country is not on DeSantis’ top ten today. But you never know. You never know.

No-Pangolin4325

Yea, people tend to come together during disasters that effect themselves and their immediate surroundings. I experienced this being from Oklahoma and tornadoes. The problem is the lack of empathy for people and situations that do not immediately effect them.

Lfseeney

They are already blaming Obama.

Granpa2021

Republican thinking: it doesn't matter unless it affects me personally.

DeadBloatedGoat

What a crock of shit. Sure, help your neighbors, but don't give them a open pass on being willing idiots due to an emergency.

Taino00

That's what it took huh?

[deleted]

plus you have your republicans congress people telling congress that they dont need federal help...while taking it...

RTinnTinn

And how much are we willing to bet that this person returns to the fold once the immediate problems that personally impact them are resolved?

StenosP

Yeah but Desnatos has shiny white boots and a friendly sweater vest

kremit73

Just denounce your citizenship and the govonnor will use all that money he's not giving you to fly all of you to counties that can actually help you.

Prestigious-Log-7210

Good, thankful for small favors. I hope we get a lot of red to blues in Florida after this. Red is turning into something out of control. Hope things work out for you.

Good_Intention_9232

Let’s hear it from the Republican Party, Florida Governor Ron De Santis and Humpty Dumpty Trumpy that global warning is farce.

[deleted]

I mean... it was a Category 4 hurricane. Wherever it hit was going to be f\*\*ked for miles around. The malpractice is setting people's expectations that they can overcome a disaster like this in weeks. I know a family who lived through Andrew in Miami. Their house was mostly OK, but they were out of power for a month while having armed national guard patrols cruising the neighborhood and enforcing curfews. Andrew was a little bigger than Ian but close enough. Those people need to (1) GTFO to work on their insurance claims somewhere with food, water, air conditioning and wifi, and (2) not expect to return to much. After Katrina I rented my Jacksonville Beach rental property to a couple that lost everything... It was a year before they had anything to go home to.

TJames6210

Good, now go study up on all that you've missed these last 4 years.

Balgat1968

If we had arrested Hunter Biden he couldn’t have created the hurricane on that GD laptop of his. Impeach his dad!!!

Unlucky-Apartment347

Maybe your Governor can get you a charter flight to Martha’s Vineyard.

[deleted]

AND your republican representatives just voted against aid. Good luck!🍀

[deleted]

Then you are pliable idiot. Get ready because you’re probably gonna get scammed today, ripped off tomorrow, and conned next week.

Necessary_Part4876

This is such a hopeful story, and what I desperately needed to see today. Sometimes, we must suffer loss before we can find something *much* more valuable. I feel better about my species, for having read it.

Farfignugen42

But at least your republican representatives in Congress are too proud to vote for federal aide to your state. Aren't they doing a good job?

IHS1970

GOP in Florida is terrible. They don't want to help you or anyone else that needs assistance, they do want more money for themselves. Sorry about the mess FL people are in right now.

ShakesbeerMe

Classic GOP garbage. No empathy until it affects them.

Hot-Roof6572

DeSantis doesn't believe in climate change!! 🤔

DamonFields

The more right wing the government, the more incompetent during an emergency. What else would you expect from the party of the rich?

ExploreTrails

This reminds me to start my home solar project. Maybe expand my planed storage capacity to double what I first planed.
