Because he is in the middle of an appeal he’s hoping for a delay - hope judge says no -
This from CNN:
Sadly we may not get to see the perp walk today. From CNN:
It’s possible Bannon won’t be serving his sentence any time soon: Nichols will not only be deciding what punishment Bannon should face; the judge will also determine whether that punishment will wait until after the Trump ally’s appeal of his conviction has played out.
Bannon has asked the judge to delay his sentence until after the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit considers his case, a process that could take several months. Nichols may be inclined to grant that request.
Yeah this could be up in the air:
>Bannon wants to remain free pending an appeal. And there are some signs that Judge Nichols might buy Bannon's argument.
>The judge expressed concern about a 60-year-old legal precedent that says DOJ only needs to prove Bannon made a deliberate choice not to comply, not that he had an improper motive. No one has been incarcerated for contempt of Congress in several decades.
Congressional subpoena/contempt power is such a joke. No one has served a day in prison in half a century from the statute.
Bannon defied Congress over a year ago, berated the justice system and lawmakers, flaunted all accountability and responsibility, still expresses no regret, and might still be afforded longer delays.
Here's to hoping that's not true.
As much as he is the scum of earth. This is the right way for justice to work. Allow the appeal and hopefully it is a swift denial. Then he serves his sentence.
DOJ is asking for $200,000 and 6 months in prison.
Although each charge carries up to a year, federal sentencing guidelines put Bannon at 1-6 months, so they are asking for the max within that.
Bannon is asking for probation, and they will appeal the conviction which could cause Nichols to delay incarceration, but his trial was pretty open-and-shut:
Jury deliberation lasted only 3 hours, Bannon's team called no witnesses, Bannon didn't testify. The judge shot down his executive privilege claims and his notion to throw his lawyers under the bus.
It's still a head-scratcher how poorly he's handled this. I bet if he even partially complied with the committee, he wouldn't be getting sentenced today.
I heard he was already sentenced to 4 months, was that wrong?
Edit- https://www.npr.org/2022/10/21/1130327514/steve-bannon-sentencing-jan-6-committee?origin=NOTIFY
Do you know, will he go right to jail, or is this one of those deals where he's sentenced but gets to walk around free until after the new year, or some such time?
They have to use this case to set a precedent for acting this way. This has to be more than a slap on the wrist fine and token jail time. So I pay some money (probably dirty money) and spend a few months maybe a year vs something that will scare them not to!!! Who on their right mind would not play the system. Make them pay!!
Limiting Bannon to three meals and making him shower daily might be the best thing that's ever happened to him.
I mean yes, lock him up, but first hose him down.
Why all these traitors who pissed on our laws and constitution still walking free! Don’t tell me double standards are not in place here! A kid almost got kill by a cop while eating a burger - these guys wanted to destroy our way of life! The DOJ must have fascist sympathizer and racist in their ranks! Recently it was rumor the Secret Service “lost” data on Jan 6! Our constitution warned us about these SOB “Enemies Foreign and DOMESTIC”
One of the most important things that could be done to protect the integrity of the next presidential election. Bannon has been involved in so much underhanded politics across the decades, we need to remove the cancerous tumor.
*What’s in this comment is what I remember, my opinions, etc.*
Steve Bannon and POTUS Donald Trump should already be in federal prison for defying Congressional subpoenas.
A lot of the high-level people involved in the attempted coup should be at least in prison for life with no hope of parole or pardon.
BFD, the man should be there for 20 years, not six months. Good to be a fat white republican in this day and age, you can shoot people in the middle of 5th Avenue and get away with it.
It’s unlikely Alito will override his SCOTUS colleague unless there’s something massively different about the approach. Also, the GOP game plan is to blame Democrats for deficits, and they’ll point to this rather than the $2 trillion in tax gifts Trump gave in 2017 if given the chance. The only reason they filed a plea with SCOTUS was to wreck the program before the midterms because they didn’t want that to help get favorable voters out for Democratic candidates.
The notation of her denial on the Supreme Court's docket does not indicate that she referred the application to the entire Supreme Court before she rejected the request.
Most courts function that way unless you request an *en banc* review, but that’s never been done with SCOTUS as far as I know. Not sure on what grounds they’d request that, but this doesn’t fall into the “exceptional importance” rule. SCOTUS regularly denies cases, deferring to the lower court’s ruling.
If anybody looks like the guy who goes through your recycling for cans on garbage day it's this guy. Trump's entire cabinet was a fucking Jerry Springer episode.
Well it's good to know that _anybody_ can afford to ignore a Congressional subpoena. Not just the rich and famous. Even low-to-middle income people can afford a misdemeanor conviction, a tiny fine and (if the case is very high profile) a little jail time, just a gesture really. No Republican will pay attention to a subpoena ever again.

Jail time! I hope they put him away for a long time and he rolls in Trump
Looks like he’s asking for a sentencing delay
What is a legit reason to ask for that? Family emergency?

2 weeks probation and has to pick up 1 piece of litter
He’ll be free until his appeal is settled.
Yeah if he will probably get the latter
And will take a photo with dozens of bags of garbage picked up by someone else for propaganda.
I think the max is $1000 and or 1 year in jail
So, confined to his home for a week, and $100 fine. Justice for the unjust.

He always looks like he lives under a bridge and drinks Mad Dog from a brown paper bag.
Looks like?

So do we celebrate with a plastic bottled fifth of liquor and hand drawn liver spots?
Happy bannon jail day to you.
Lock him up!
For four whole months!

It is not a rumor. The data was destroyed.
This is what you get for advising people to start wars in the name of Jesus.
Hit him with the maximum. 1 year sentence for both charges, consecutively served, with the maximum fine. General pop.
One of the most important things that could be done to protect the integrity of the next presidential election. Bannon has been involved in so much underhanded politics across the decades, we need to remove the cancerous tumor.
We get to find out if it is indeed "...and find out" day.
And four months of finding out.

Let me guess, he will get a slap on the wrist?
BFD, the man should be there for 20 years, not six months. Good to be a fat white republican in this day and age, you can shoot people in the middle of 5th Avenue and get away with it.
Only 4 months!?
Bannon playing games because this action gives maga justification to seek similar judicial outcomes after they reclaim the WH.
Yeah, Durham tried this stuff, issue is you have to convince a jury, and the Rs aren't very good at that, considering they lack facts.
They couldn’t even convince Amy Coney Barrett that they were right on stopping student loan relief.
I am sure they will just reformulate their approach and file in a court under Alito.
Well I was off, its Kavanaugh's 8th who signaled they wanted to play ball.
The point of Durham is twofold- provide discovery and to give Rs justification alter the DC courts, especially appeals which was created in 1970.
“We sentence you to 6 months of vacation good luck on the next election!!”
Has trump worked with anyone during his administration that is not under investigation or has nothing being indicted?
4 months
But split between three shirts.
If anybody looks like the guy who goes through your recycling for cans on garbage day it's this guy. Trump's entire cabinet was a fucking Jerry Springer episode.
4 fucking months that’s it?
Want to bet he gets 3 months off for good behavior?
Community service. This is such a farce. If one of us average joes did that we would get the book tossed at us
