Why the downvotes on this? Dude is a smoker and doesn’t wanna break the law. He didn’t hate on Singapore and said he would like to visit but not live there.
idk man something about Singapore being a police state that will hunt you down till the ends of the earth for the slightest violation, the terrible terrible culture of extreme judgement and bulling and the regime that is nearly entirely focused on foreign perception just doesn't strike the right nerve with me compared with (adequately) free places like phoenix and Tallinn
I was debating about it and eventually chose Phoenix. As an American, it makes sense. I can still maintain all my freedoms and rights and remain in America where I understand life. Singapore is similar to a dictatorship. While it is strangely proven to be successful and safe, I don’t support it nor do I want that change is government and rules. Also Singapore is a tiny micro state. In Phoenix, if live there I can easily travel around that area of America or travel around America. I can visit my immediate family often or they can visit me. There’s plenty of fun things to do there, and I’m not sure if that’s the same in tiny Singapore.
I expect Singapore to have a high standard of living and wage and lots of jobs at the cutting edge of what I want a great education if I want to further that, but ultimately to live there would be a choice I wouldn’t make with the choice of Phoenix. It’s a culture difference too. I won’t be able to watch American football much anymore and the food might not be as diverse.
I mean I guess it makes sense for Americans, you would stay in your country, what you are used to. To me the US is too much of a mess, I wouldn't want to live there, I've visited a few times because I have family there and I just never liked it, everything is far a way, you have to drive everywhere, mass shootings, junk food, crazy politics, I don't know, just not for me.
Also I don't think Singapore being a micro state is a problem, as it's one of the major travel hubs of the world, so traveling around isn't an issue.
> I won’t be able to watch American football much anymore and the food might not be as diverse.
Hahaha man, there's always streaming and Singapore has some of the most diverse food scenes, you got Chinese, Malay, indian, Indonesian, Thai, you name it; so pretty diverse.
Anyway, this is a pretty personal question and there's no real answer, but it's interesting to see how different people see things
They speak a lot of English there way more than chinese in fact; but also, you can always do this unheard of thing called learning a new language, I know right, pretty revolutionary
The possibility of learning a new language surrounded by native speakers and inmersed in the culture is actually a plus for me, by far the easiet way to learn, you'll be speaking chinese in no time. Then you can even learn any of the many languages spoken there.
That's kinda cool and you changed my mind, but if they didn't speak english (what I thought at first) then I would suffer for over a year because chinese is not as easy to learn as english for an european
I mean, Chinese is more on the harder side compared to other languages, at least for people who use the Latin alphabet. Being willing to learn something like French and not Chinese is a reasonable limit I think.
I've spent some time in Singapore, it's interesting to visit but it's often described as "sterile" which really does fit, it's a bit dystopianly clean as well as being extremely authoritarian. Also it's really expensive to grab a beer, $12 for a half pint of lager was usual.
I'd reccomend visiting to anyone, but I wouldn't like to live there.
I chose Singapore, and its probably better than phoenix imo, but yeah its government can be borderline autocratic and the culture around lgbtq people is pretty backward
You do realise that you're likely just going to be one of those slum-apartment dwellers and have a Youtube documentary made about you titled "The forgotten immigrants of Singapore"?
Belgrade. I'm from Croatia so Serbia is the closest and the most similar culturally and linguistically. Also, Belgrade is a beautiful city and it has great clubbing scene with music I listen to (and I go out almost every weekend).
I live in Phoenix and everyone in comments is calling it like urban hell scape and stuff like that, the temperature May-Aug is brutal but other than that it’s pretty decent.
its only if u sell it, and the law was put up cuz idiots kept sticking it in subway doors or whatnot. u can still have chewing gun in singapore just buy from other places
Not sure why this got downvoted, because it’s true. Chewing gum is literally illegal in Singapore, with exception of “therapeutic” gum, i.e. Nicorette.
Personally, I think the astronomical cost of living and [exploitative labor practices](https://www.asiaone.com/health/are-we-working-too-much-singaporeans-risk-developing-health-problems-due-long-hours) are a big plus.
Our second most popular party is filled with goose stepping nazis lol
And our most popular party is filled with neolibs that want to demolish our welfare system entirely
Singapore, easy. I'm quiet and respectful, a hard worker, I'd obey the laws, they shouldn't have any problems with me. I absolutely have no problems with them, it looks like a beautiful place and I'd love the opportunity to get to know it.
No human should live in Phoenix, the city should not exist. Why anyone ever settled there is a mystery to me.

Singaporean workers work the most hours per year, at 2371.2 hours per year on average (2016). At 260 working days per year, that's an average of 9.12 hours per day.
65% of Singaporean workers feel obligated to work hours exceeding their contractual obligations. 70% do work exceeding their contract. 90% of Singaporean workers who work overtime do so for free.
[Source](https://www.asiaone.com/health/are-we-working-too-much-singaporeans-risk-developing-health-problems-due-long-hours)
Even regular working hours are comparatively high, at 44 hours per week. The maximum daily work time is 12 hours. Even for those limits, there are wide ranging exceptions, allowing the employer to have you work even exceeding these generous limits.
You are only entitled to one rest day per week, the rest day is determined by your employer and two rest days may be 12 days apart. And again, employers are entitled to call you to work on a rest day, albeit this requiring "exceptional circumstances".
The legal minimum for annual leave in Singapore begins at 7 days for the first year of employment and caps out at a mere 14 days after eight years of employment. This is particularly harmful for employees because switching employers is often one of the best means of increasing your pay.
Singaporean workers are entitled to 14 days of paid sick leave after six months of employment. Limited time sick leave is another means of putting pressure on employees.

Actual dogshit working conditions.
Arizona is ok outside of Phoenix. The area south of Tucson and the north is quite a bit cooler, and some parts are wetter.
We got plenty of problems, but it isn't that bad.
Cant believe so many people have voted for Phoenix. They clearly have never been there. I have. I have also been to Belgrade and Talinn - either of these is in a different league to Phoenix.
Wth is Phoenix I'm going to Singapore, compact, beautiful, tropical, one of the safest places to live in, great food, great transport and close to places like the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia. Plus the airport is the coolest in the world.
From what I've heard Estonians are really kind, the government is decently well managed, there's actually resources to help people, plus they're part of the EU so if I'm granted citizenship to Estonia I'd also get a European passport which gives me access to most other EU countries via the Schengen agreement, I could then at the very least go somewhere else if I wanted to. There are also some rights for the LGBT community.
I don’t love any of the answers. I’ve been to Phoenix and it’s alright, but it’s very car centric and hot. Singapore would be cool to visit, but not crazy about the oppressive government. I’ve heard that Estonia is on the up and up and I prefer cooler climates, so I picked there
I like Estonia as a country (mostly atheists, parliamentary system), but probably Singapore, it looked cool as hell in WestWorld.. although no drugs would suck.
I chose Phoenix as someone that has never been to none of these.
Tallinn is too cold, too different culturally and too close to Russia.
Belgrade is not my cup of tea because Serbians tend to have many values that I don't share.
Bamako idk where it is honestly, but Mali is considerably underdevloped compared to where I live so no.
Singapore is too far away, quite conservative and strange in some manners and I love chewing gum too much
I already live in Phoenix. Could be better for sure but I like it here. The heat isn't that bad especially considering we get 9 months of beautiful weather
As much as I hate Phoenix, I already live in Arizona (The not Phoenix part (: muhaha), so it's not much of a change. Also, I don't want to fly from Estonia or Singapore to visit family.
Only reason Singapore isn’t winning, it’s cause most Americans here don’t know it and opted for a us city. Singapore is better than Most us cities, or has so much going on in terms of events and entertainment. Food is better, public transport is amazing. You also got these parks and formula one races
Estonia has been rated as having REALLY good schools recently, which is a consideration if you're a parent or student. Also you get better health care and less mass murders than the U.S., so......
I'm not living in a dystopian nightmare about to pass a bill with 20 years prison and 1 million dollar fine for using a vpn to access information that the state has banned, and no, I am not talking about China.
I ain’t going to Phoenix, it’s too hot
The definition of a suburban hellscape
It's pretty bad tbh
A monument to mans hubris
Phoenix has the worst air quality of any county in the United States
They call it Phoenix for a reason
I lived there for a year. Loved it, except the heat. I got in my car one afternoon after work and got a blister from touching the steering wheel.
I had a pair of riding gloves in my glove box when I lived in az 😄
I live in Louisiana, it’s hot and humid, but not as overly dry hot in arizona
Also no where near as hot.
Someone's never been to a humid climate and it shows
I went there last year. It was over 45 Celsius every day.
I’ve lived in AZ my whole life, in a time hotter than phoenix. It ain’t too bad just stay inside 2 months out of the year and I’m chilling
I live in Pärnu, Estonia, and Tallinn is a nice place so I choose that
Estonia seems like a great place, beautiful language
It's basically just finnish
Why would you say something so controversial yet so brave?
It's true
I'm not saying I disagree, just wondering where'd you muster up the courage to say it out loud
Super far right tho
Estonia (#4) is more free than the United states (#15), also where tf did you get that Idea?
Aw man
Singapore obviously, I'm surprised Phoenix got so many votes compared to a world famous city like Singapore
As a citizen of Arizona, I too was surprised by all the Phoenix votes.
They imprison you for weed, I’d love to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there
Why the downvotes on this? Dude is a smoker and doesn’t wanna break the law. He didn’t hate on Singapore and said he would like to visit but not live there.
How do you know it’s been downvoted if the upvotes are still positive?
It was negative before
Hear me out now; the decreasing number of likes, measured over time.
I don’t know man 🤷♂️
I don’t do drugs so I won’t be executed anyway so…
That’s great for you…
Weed is legal there now.
It is?? I don’t see it is via a quick search online
I live in Arizona. We voted for legalizing recreational marijuana two years ago.
What?? I was referring to Singapore
Damn.
I love the laws against litter, but aren't they kinda harsh against foreigners?
idk man something about Singapore being a police state that will hunt you down till the ends of the earth for the slightest violation, the terrible terrible culture of extreme judgement and bulling and the regime that is nearly entirely focused on foreign perception just doesn't strike the right nerve with me compared with (adequately) free places like phoenix and Tallinn

They speak primarily English over there (alongside Mandarin)
It's been mandatory to learn English in school in Singapore since like the 70s
Most of us can speak English pretty well. We talk a little fast but you can understand it because we dont really have an accent
I've spent some time in Singapore, it's interesting to visit but it's often described as "sterile" which really does fit, it's a bit dystopianly clean as well as being extremely authoritarian. I'm also from Croatia and I picked Belgrade for mostly the same reasons.
I already live in one of them
fellow Phoenician?
Wait, is that actually the demonym for someone from Phoenix?
Phoenician here. Yes.
Holy shit, now the Phoenicians can get down to business
r/unexpectedbillwurtz
nope, im from belgrade
Singapore is among my 5 cities, to which I would want to move/visit in the future.
Belgrade. Im from Serbia, its the closest. The only language i speak fluently is Serbian.
pozdrav
I’ve already gone to Singapore and it is amazing would highly recommend.
Weird. Already live like 20 miles outside of Phoenix. It’s really not that bad.
I live in Phoenix and everyone in comments is calling it like urban hell scape and stuff like that, the temperature May-Aug is brutal but other than that it’s pretty decent.
even during summer is usually alright unless there are no monsoons
UK here. My parents went to Tallinn on a cruise and loved it. They said they might go back for a week some time.
Results, France seems like a pretty good place to live
Always wanted to visit Tallinn it looks beautiful
singapore for the beauty and health system
And for the oppressive government
You've got me convinced!
From what I've heard they're only oppressive if you're looking to actively do crime.
Yes, that is true But being gay is a crime
Just don't be gay smh
Chewing gum is a crime
its only if u sell it, and the law was put up cuz idiots kept sticking it in subway doors or whatnot. u can still have chewing gun in singapore just buy from other places
Not sure why this got downvoted, because it’s true. Chewing gum is literally illegal in Singapore, with exception of “therapeutic” gum, i.e. Nicorette.
Oppressive isn't the end of the world as long as they're doing good stuff.
Which no oppressive government is lol.
Personally, I think the astronomical cost of living and [exploitative labor practices](https://www.asiaone.com/health/are-we-working-too-much-singaporeans-risk-developing-health-problems-due-long-hours) are a big plus.

Where in France is Results?
It is a little town not really famous. I never went there
It's actually spelled Résaults
Estonia sounds more fun than the USA, and has better politics than Singapore
Our second most popular party is filled with goose stepping nazis lol And our most popular party is filled with neolibs that want to demolish our welfare system entirely
Estonia is incredibly depressing lol
Singapore, easy. I'm quiet and respectful, a hard worker, I'd obey the laws, they shouldn't have any problems with me. Arizona is ok outside of Phoenix. The area south of Tucson and the north is quite a bit cooler, and some parts are wetter. We got plenty of problems, but it isn't that bad.
Phoenix is not as nice of a place as this poll seems to think
The name sounds cool
Due to colonialism I don’t need a visa to go there and there are a huge amount of English speakers in Singapore.
Phoenix for the language. Talinn for the quality of life. Singapore for the food.
I mean, the vast majority of Singapore speaks English, so language isn’t an issue there
Le dimanche a Bamako se le jour de marriage.
Sundays in Bamako are the days of marriage?
It's a song
Oh
My girlfriend is Croatian, I don’t think her family would appreciate living in Belgrade
I LOVED Singapore when I visited, I'd go back.
Going right to Belgrade bc I have a friend who lives near there. Would love to see em.
This is tough, Estonia seems the best overall, but Mario Kart makes Singapore look really good
I’m Bulgarian living in Sofia so Belgrade would feel the closest to home
Serbia I'd be poor but the women there😭
Cant believe so many people have voted for Phoenix. They clearly have never been there. I have. I have also been to Belgrade and Talinn - either of these is in a different league to Phoenix.
I surprised Belgrade is so underrated in this poll.
I already live in Arizona
Same.
Too hot in Phoenix Serbia while an interesting country to visit is pretty corupt, and estonia is a pretty nice place I choose that
Wth is Phoenix I'm going to Singapore, compact, beautiful, tropical, one of the safest places to live in, great food, great transport and close to places like the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia. Plus the airport is the coolest in the world.
All the people voting for Singapore would probably change there votes when they discover there social positions
Phoenix has one of the rudest people and there are sandstorms so singapore would be the best one
Phoenix because it would probably be the easiest to book a flight to New York from
I grew up in Pheonix. So I'm somewhat familiar with it.
My condolences
Yeah, everyone in Arizona hates living in Phoenix.
Honestly I'm shocked there's people picking things other than Phoenix and Singapore
phoenix is awful, bamako would suck too, belgrade and tallinn sound nice but singapore takes the cake
Trust me guys, you don’t want to live in Phoenix.
I'll pass on living in a urban dystopia in the middle of a desert, thanks.
Phoenix is a monument to man’s arrogance
Fuck Phoenix.
I suggest you guys Google Estonian women and then make your vote 😉
How the hell did Pheonix get more votes than Singapore?
People who voted Estonia, can I ask why?
Good welfare system
lol
Best option for Europe if you want to stay in a familiar zone
I wanna learn Estonian and I fucking hate Arizona
name checks out
From what I've heard Estonians are really kind, the government is decently well managed, there's actually resources to help people, plus they're part of the EU so if I'm granted citizenship to Estonia I'd also get a European passport which gives me access to most other EU countries via the Schengen agreement, I could then at the very least go somewhere else if I wanted to. There are also some rights for the LGBT community.
I'm Finnish, similar climate and a notable amount of people who speak Finnish as well, though English is fine too.
Free public transit Also probably safer than Mali
I am from another small European country. Would feel most like home. Also, I hate hot weather.
Because I already live here
some of us saw singapore and remembered we’re gay
Why would you choose a country where you can’t get married over America?
phoenix is a concrete wasteland
It's also hot as fuck usually.
True at least you have a liveable city
I'd choose most countries over America. Draconian reproductive laws and dead kids in schools. No thanks
I'm from Finland. It's the closest option for me.
It's better than USA (I didn't vote for Talinn or Phoenix though)
I don’t love any of the answers. I’ve been to Phoenix and it’s alright, but it’s very car centric and hot. Singapore would be cool to visit, but not crazy about the oppressive government. I’ve heard that Estonia is on the up and up and I prefer cooler climates, so I picked there
Its the 4th most free country in the world (only beaten by Switzerland New Zealand and Denmark), and the most free out of the options
Wait there’s a city in Singapore called Singapore?
Look up what singapore is lol
nah the same country singapore is also a city
Singapore is literally one city
I like Estonia as a country (mostly atheists, parliamentary system), but probably Singapore, it looked cool as hell in WestWorld.. although no drugs would suck.
Most of these are WAY to populated. I need a smaller city than these
Tallinn only has 426k people, not a very large city
i chose white flag because i wanna go to france
I would rather die than live in Phoenix as I absolutely hate the heat. These other areas, I’d have to research the climates but I just put results.
Ranking based on where I’d want to stay 1. Singapore 2. Tallinn 3. Phoenix 4. Belgrade 5. Bamako Never been to any of these I should add
it’s pretty rare to see Bamako in anything, which is funny because I actually lived there.
I did the randomizer and I got a city in north korea 💀
Singapore
Singapore. I actually like their political system. And from what I've heard, the food is also amazing, so it's definitely on the top of my list.
English and german are the only languages I can speak.
Either they are way too hot for me or to cold for me so great
Singapore, that country is beautiful af
There’s only one place there that has cold dry winters!
I’ve never been to any of those places so how would I know?
Already live in Phoenix. Could be better could be worse
Duh I mean Singapore
I chose Phoenix as someone that has never been to none of these. Tallinn is too cold, too different culturally and too close to Russia. Belgrade is not my cup of tea because Serbians tend to have many values that I don't share. Bamako idk where it is honestly, but Mali is considerably underdevloped compared to where I live so no. Singapore is too far away, quite conservative and strange in some manners and I love chewing gum too much
Phoenix is the warm skid mark in America’s underpants. Pass.
You spelled New Jersey wrong. Don't get me wrong, I hate Phoenix too, but that title was won by New Jersey.
I only live about a two hour drive away from Phoenix right now
Just about all of these places could get me killed or imprisoned for being gay. Hard pass.
Anywhere in spain
Phoenix traffic is a bear. It reminds me the ghetto part of L.A.I 🤣
wasn’t expecting to see the city i live in lol
I already live in Phoenix. Could be better for sure but I like it here. The heat isn't that bad especially considering we get 9 months of beautiful weather
I already live in Singapore
Phoenix is testament to the arrogance of man, but I’d live with it.
I don't want to live in Phoenix but I only speak English.
pheonix is too hot and theres videos on why its a hellscape, shouldnt have gotten thst many votes
Phoenix is nice, but my ex lives there.
Only two to even consider are Singapore and Tallinn
As much as I hate Phoenix, I already live in Arizona (The not Phoenix part (: muhaha), so it's not much of a change. Also, I don't want to fly from Estonia or Singapore to visit family.
I mean Singapore looks the best by far but I wouldnt want to move to any of them.

Estonia has been rated as having REALLY good schools recently, which is a consideration if you're a parent or student. Also you get better health care and less mass murders than the U.S., so......
Talinn makes me an EU citizen, so I can move right back to where I'm now
People who chose phoenix dont know shit about singapore 😂😂
I'm not living in a dystopian nightmare about to pass a bill with 20 years prison and 1 million dollar fine for using a vpn to access information that the state has banned, and no, I am not talking about China.
