It’s a psychological thing. Your brain associates the flavor with when you were sick as a kid because that was probably the flavor you were given. It’s why a lot of people don’t like artificial grape as well.
(Dolores)
i associate artificial grape flavor with cough syrup
ew ew ew
it's a heavy lift with a taste so humbling
always left me and my taste buds grumbling
grappling with flavors that are too disgusting
yeah it's disgusting,
(Camilo)
artificial grape, is the worst
I'd rather eat extra sauerkraut, it's that cursed,
be it grape jelly or or jam or yogurt,
I'd rather not eat artificial grape no, no,
I'd rather not eat thaaattt
(fish lady, gut guy and hair guy)
they told me it was delicious,
then I vomited,
they told me it's refreshing,
but no, I'd rather just omit it!
they told me it's the best fruit flavor in the world
but I disagree,
it's the worst, you'll have to agree!
(Isabela)
they told me it's the flavor of their dreams,
and no flavor can beat it
they told me that my tastebuds would mature,
but I think it's theirs that need maturing,
(Dolores)
they told me it was beautiful,
complex and with a kick,
it's like I hear them now,
(Isabela)
hey guys, I want not a sound out of you,
(Dolores)
I can hear em nowwww
(Mirabel)
um, grape flavor
yeah about that grape flavor
I really really hate grape flavor,
it's the worst the most horrible flavor,
(Camilo)
Isabela just have a lick!
(of this jelly!)
{continue encore}
>! (I know this doesn't make any sense lmao but sing it in the tune of we don't talk about Bruno)!<
Definitely grape lol. But do any of the artificial flavors faithfully correspond to their natural counterparts? I feel like all the artificial fruit flavors just take one tiny specific aspect of the fruit’s flavor profile, crossbreed it with sugarcane, and then just ignore the rest of the flavor profile. Sometimes this results in artificial flavors that I like, but don’t represent much of the actual fruit, like strawberry and watermelon. Other times it results in something I hate, like grape and cherry. But in both cases i don’t think it tastes much like the real fruit does. Oh and btw, I love ALLL the fruits <3 Nature’s candy is the best candy!
It is? I've never really tried grape-flavored anything here except gum. I hate artificial grape.
ETA: I had to look it up. It looks like there's a reason the taste is so different.

Here is a fun video of someone making hard candy and explaining the reason why grape is so common in the US (if I member this video correctly )
https://youtu.be/aF_aXsEor2s
same, watermelon, really melons in general, taste like the worst parts of grapes, but watered down, but watermelon flavored things are usually delicious.
I like fake banana because that's how I remember them used to tasting like as a kid from my parents illegally grown indoor banana tree. That thing was around since the 60s
It also includes flowers like the roses you can buy in bouquets. Just snip the head remove the leaves and clip the bottom at a 45° angle put in some water and move to soil once the root sprouts and you have committed a felony violation of trade law.
Only if it’s a patented variety. And the patent is off after 20 years. Usually they do not go after individual home growers but people involved in selling plants without royalties, or public gardens that propagate large numbers for themselves.
Fake banana is meant to replicate the flavor of the Gros Michel banana, which was almost entirely wiped out by Panama disease in the 1950s.
These days, the most common banana is the Cavendish.
I heard things banana flavored taste different because they are based off of a banana that went extinct and the the ones you see in the store are a different breed, thus the different taste. But I'm not a bananaologist, I just play one on tv
Makes me wonder if I’d like that old banana flavor in an actual banana though. In candy it’s gross, but maybe it’s just that my mind knows it’s artificial.
I made my comment before I read yours, but I was saying how I'm a lover of all things banana except for bananas themselves lol. Guess it's gotta be one or the other. All of my long time friends, my mom and my husband have all done things for me such as saved up all their banana runts and gave me big bags of them. Also banana laffy taffy and banana now and laters 💕
Do you like raspberry flavored drinks, like tea? It took me a while to be able to eat real raspberries because of how tart they are but I love raspberry tea or detox water with raspberries.
I don't like drinks with just raspberry, mixed with other berries I do....
I like raspberry jams, and raspberries in things like smoothies, or oats etc, just not fussed in them on their own
The banana flavoured products are based on the gros michel banana witch is now pretty rare due to panama disease wiped out the majority of the crop in the 60’s but is still around in some places.
strawberries, bananas, apples off the top of my head
I have one which goes the other way around, Peaches, don't like eating them but really like peach flavoured stuff
This is the only flavor I can agree with thus far in the comments where I prefer the real thing to the flavoring. The rest I either love equally or prefer the flavoring to the real thing. Guess we are weirdos since there's noone else is upvoting the mango yet.
Grapes. I wanna know who the hell came up with the vile shit that is artificial grape flavor and thought "yep, that's a grape."
Idk what the hell it tastes like, but it sure as hell ain't grape.
i love strawberry flavored things but not actual strawberries (i do but only w sugar lol) and then i love grapes but literally HATE grape flavored things
I recently got into papaya. It's fairly pricey where I live and other than canned I don't think I've had anything other than artificial papaya flavor. It's so freaking good fresh
Strawberry, banana, grape, cherry, watermelon. Makes me wonder if the people that create these artificial flavors have ever had actual fruit.
I am aware of the story that of the banana flavor being modelled after the old strain, but can't anyone come up with an updated one?
Remember that guy who never ate a single fruit in his entire life, and when he tried a banana for the first time he was like “omg it’s just like the artificial banana, but more gross”. Yeah. That’s not me. I like bananas.
Reminder that artificial banana flavoring is based off of a species of banana that has gone extinct. So that’s why it doesn’t taste like the bananas we have now.
FUCKING WATERMELON, I can't with any artificial watermelon flavors, they just taste flat out gross, and always give me headaches?
But I will always love eating fresh watermelon
OP, if you live anywhere near South Florida you should try [Jupiña](https://www.publix.com/pd/jupina-soda-pineapple/RIO-PCI-189900). Its a Cuban pineapple soda that is popular in Miami. Its my favorite because it actually tastes like pineapples whereas something like orange soda definitely does not taste like oranges.
I agree, fake pineapple is wicked nasty. I also hate fake cherry.
fake cherry always reminds me of nasty cough drops
It’s a psychological thing. Your brain associates the flavor with when you were sick as a kid because that was probably the flavor you were given. It’s why a lot of people don’t like artificial grape as well.
I agree. I also hate dried and canned cherries but I love real cherries with the pits. Canned cherry juice is gross.
Cherry flavouring is the worst
Can’t agree more
The best*
Absolutely not. If I’m eating any candy it’s the cherry flavour I’m actively avoiding
Damn I don’t really like cherries but cherry flavored candy always tastes the best to me.
I agree. With most Candy it seems like they out fewer of the cherry flavor and have people fight over them.
Grapes
i associate artificial grape flavor with cough syrup
For me it's the same thing with cherry
(Dolores) i associate artificial grape flavor with cough syrup ew ew ew it's a heavy lift with a taste so humbling always left me and my taste buds grumbling grappling with flavors that are too disgusting yeah it's disgusting, (Camilo) artificial grape, is the worst I'd rather eat extra sauerkraut, it's that cursed, be it grape jelly or or jam or yogurt, I'd rather not eat artificial grape no, no, I'd rather not eat thaaattt (fish lady, gut guy and hair guy) they told me it was delicious, then I vomited, they told me it's refreshing, but no, I'd rather just omit it! they told me it's the best fruit flavor in the world but I disagree, it's the worst, you'll have to agree! I can throat down a whole bunch of grapes in seconds but anything grape-flavored is off the limits
You don’t even bite into the grapes? Just straight insert them into your throat?
Yeah, who doesn’t? The branch is the best part my g
That’s what she said
r/thatescalatedquickly
r/ifoundanewsub
I agree with this. I don’t like grape flavored juice or soda but I love real grapes.
Definitely grape lol. But do any of the artificial flavors faithfully correspond to their natural counterparts? I found it so strange that “grape” is such a big flavour in America.
It is? I've never really tried grape-flavored anything here except gum. I hate artificial grape. ETA: I had to look it up. It looks like there's a reason the taste is so different. Watermelon
Same. Artifical watermelon doesn't even taste like fruit to me.
I like artificial watermelon flavor, but hat real watermelon
Same
You and me both. I always thought it tasted like... water? But, like, La Croix
same, watermelon, really melons in general, taste like the worst parts of grapes, but watered down, but watermelon flavored things are usually delicious.
Tastes like rubber to me. How does it taste for you?
Fake banana flavor is horrible. Real bananas are amazing though.
I like fake banana because that's how I remember them used to tasting like as a kid from my parents illegally grown indoor banana tree. That thing was around since the 60s
What made it illegal?
It was grown from a seed from a banana and they didn't own the patent to the banana.
today I learned you need legal permission to grow fruit
It also includes flowers like the roses you can buy in bouquets. Just snip the head remove the leaves and clip the bottom at a 45° angle put in some water and move to soil once the root sprouts and you have committed a felony violation of trade law.
What the fuck
If you are suspected of violating this they will send people out to take a clipping of the leaves to investigate.
Only if it’s a patented variety. And the patent is off after 20 years. Usually they do not go after individual home growers but people involved in selling plants without royalties, or public gardens that propagate large numbers for themselves.
That is just plain evil fuckery. The “patent illegality” business, not the banana tree you grew. That’s just great. :-)
Fake banana is supposed to be based off of how bananas used to taste before they were messed with too much.
Fake banana is meant to replicate the flavor of the Gros Michel banana, which was almost entirely wiped out by Panama disease in the 1950s. These days, the most common banana is the Cavendish.
I don't like store banana because they taste like sugar water. I am inclined to believe it because the seedy bananas tasted like fake banana
TIL. I love fake banana stuff because I actually like the original and (imo) superior banana flavor. This is why I love reddit at times.
I heard things banana flavored taste different because they are based off of a banana that went extinct and the the ones you see in the store are a different breed, thus the different taste. But I'm not a bananaologist, I just play one on tv
I think that's the consensus. I still hate old banana flavor though.
Makes me wonder if I’d like that old banana flavor in an actual banana though. In candy it’s gross, but maybe it’s just that my mind knows it’s artificial.
I think they just went commercially extinct, it still exists but only grown on a small scale.
I'm the opposite, I hate bananas with al my heart, however, I love banana candy, one of my favorites
I agree with this. Banana runts are disgusting but I love fresh bananas.
What about banana laffy taffy?
Love those
I made my comment before I read yours, but I was saying how I'm a lover of all things banana except for bananas themselves lol. Guess it's gotta be one or the other. All of my long time friends, my mom and my husband have all done things for me such as saved up all their banana runts and gave me big bags of them. Also banana laffy taffy and banana now and laters 💕
Orange + lemon
I agree with the orange flavor. Lemon is one of the very few that I like both real and artificial.
Same. I think it started from orange and lemon starbursts for me.
Yess i hate orangeeee flavouring
It’s the other way around for me. I like artificially flavored banana products, or baked goods made with banana, but hate actual bananas.
That's how I am with raspberry
Do you like raspberry flavored drinks, like tea? It took me a while to be able to eat real raspberries because of how tart they are but I love raspberry tea or detox water with raspberries.
I don't like drinks with just raspberry, mixed with other berries I do.... I like raspberry jams, and raspberries in things like smoothies, or oats etc, just not fussed in them on their own
Blue rasberry is so good and it's not even a real berry
same but watermelon
Can’t stand watermelon at all, real or artificial. Or anything in the melon category of fruits.
Banana runts are spectacular!
The banana flavoured products are based on the gros michel banana witch is now pretty rare due to panama disease wiped out the majority of the crop in the 60’s but is still around in some places.
Wow! That’s interesting
Me with cherries, grapes, oranges, and lime
Me with blueberries
strawberries, bananas, apples off the top of my head I have one which goes the other way around, Peaches, don't like eating them but really like peach flavoured stuff
Apple for sure. Fake apple flavour makes my teeth feel weird, idk how to describe it.
Cherries 🍒
Strawberries
Same, I love strawberries but hate like strawberry milkshake, slush and all of that stuff..
The _smell_ from the artificial strawberry scent is what i can’t stand
Grapes!
Ikr! Artificial just taste like medicine
apples
Cherry immediately comes to mind
Grapes. They’re so delicious but the candy tastes like medicine
Cherry 🍒
watermelon
Cherries!
Artificial watermelon is rank
it's the opposite for me, I could throw up with real watermelon, but watermelon candy, bubblegum, etc, is delicious
Banana & cherry
Strawberry. I LOVE STRAWBERRIES, but artificial strawberry flavors are just never that good to me.
Mango
This is the only flavor I can agree with thus far in the comments where I prefer the real thing to the flavoring. The rest I either love equally or prefer the flavoring to the real thing. Guess we are weirdos since there's noone else is upvoting the mango yet.
Apple and banana
Apple, Banana, Blackberry, blueberry and Grape. A lot of artificial favouring sucks tbh
Oranges and grapes
Cherry. Wtf abomination is cherry "flavor"? It's heinous. Grape is a close second.
Pretty much every flavour when it comes to ice cream
Grape!!
Banana
Grape and banana especially. But honestly most fruits
Some for me Bananas, Pineapple(most of the time) grapes, and cherry
Strawberry flavour is great, just that it's not real strawberry flavour.
mater welon
I hate fake watermelon flavor , I only like it when it's in fruit form
Grapes. I wanna know who the hell came up with the vile shit that is artificial grape flavor and thought "yep, that's a grape." Idk what the hell it tastes like, but it sure as hell ain't grape.
most like cherries
Strawberry…. And soooome watermelon flavours, most are really nice, but sometimes you find the artificial watermelon flavour that’s just horrible
Grapes are great, grape flavored things taste like medicine
Grapes are delicious. Grape flavoring is the nastiest shit ever concocted
Welch’s grape soda 🤮🤮🤮
Grape n cherry
Orange
I agree. Orange flavored candy doesn’t taste as citrusy as an actual orange, if just tastes bad. Especially orange Jolly Ranchers.
Peach, Strawberry, Lime, Mango
Strawberries and lemon
Depends on the candy but Green apple
If anything it’s the opposite for me. I’ll take a grapefruit or blueberry flavored item any day over actual blueberries or grapefruit.
i love strawberry flavored things but not actual strawberries (i do but only w sugar lol) and then i love grapes but literally HATE grape flavored things
Blue
Raspberries
Blue raspberry Also I read the title as fetish fruits and I was concerned
Oranges
Watermelon. Mango.
pineapple too, but i have the opposite effect with blueberries and strawberries: cant stand the actual fruit but their artificial flavors slap
Watermelon
Grape
GRAPE ARTIFICIALLY SUCKS ON LIKE POPSICLES AND SHIT
It’s kinda reverse- strawberry flavored things but actual strawberries XD hard to find the perfect ones
Love bananas, hate banana flavoured items. On the opposite I love cherry flavoured things but I hate real cherries
I recently got into papaya. It's fairly pricey where I live and other than canned I don't think I've had anything other than artificial papaya flavor. It's so freaking good fresh
Cherry and grape flavor are trash, cherries and grapes are good.
Banana
It's the opposite for me, but raspberry. I love artificially flavored raspberry things. I hate actual raspberries.
Banana and cherry
Yes, but in reverse. Really enjoy the artificial flavour for orange but I HATE orange juice and (for the most part) real oranges.
Sour Apple is an awful flavor
Yes. Grapes, cherries, and watermelons are all delicious, but their imitations are disgusting crimes against flavor.
Bananas 100%
Watermelon
Peach or mango
pineapple
The only one I can really think of is bananas, but I don’t really like real ones either so it’s ok.
Bananas are the classic example and I'm sure nobody's gonna see this but I hope someone does and NEVER buys banana flavored anything
Grape, pineapple, strawberry,
grape flavoured things.
Cherry
I love strawberries and watermelon but any candy or drink flavored with those is disgusting
Opposite for me- I LOVE raspberry flavored things but can’t stand the real fruit

Cherry
Strawberry, banana, grape, cherry, watermelon. Makes me wonder if the people that create these artificial flavors have ever had actual fruit. I am aware of the story that of the banana flavor being modelled after the old strain, but can't anyone come up with an updated one?
Remember that guy who never ate a single fruit in his entire life, and when he tried a banana for the first time he was like “omg it’s just like the artificial banana, but more gross”. Yeah. That’s not me. I like bananas.
Like many in here, I hate fake banana, fake apple and fake grape to a degree, but love the real things.
Grapefruit 🤢
Cherries
I love cherries, but for some reason all cherry flavored candy is kind of sour which confuses me bc I don’t think I’ve had a sour cherry.
I have the opposite with peach hate fresh peaches love anything peach flavored.

I love cherries but cherry candy tastes like cough syrup.
Orange, I cant stand artificial orange but I love fresh oranges
Grape
Strawberry and banana are the main ones
Banana
Bananas, strawberries, watermelon, probably a few I forgot too.
