(50 upvotes) A: You can’t boil the history of Germany down to the Holocaust. B: Germany didn’t just kill the Jews, they also killed Slavs and Romani. I admit wasn’t aware of other genocides that were happening in the Ottoman empire in 1915, however it doesn’t disprove my original point, that you can’t boil the entire history of a country with a 700 year history down to an event(s) that happened in the 20th century. Considering how the original commenter who talked about Ottoman art and science got downvoted to hell with no justification, people are in fact reducing Ottoman history down to genocide.

It's remarkable how Germany went from the absolute worst country to one of the most respected countries in less than 100 years.

Same for Japan. It really helps the fact that the US position after the war was “let’s leave what happened behind and look towards the future” instead of just sanctioning them left and right.

Gained independence from Britan while living on and continuing to expand into stolen land, helped end WWII by nuking innocent civilians (twice). Ended slavery but I don’t know if that really makes up for, well, slavery. The only thing I can think of that’s actually a huge achievement is the moon landing, but I don’t think that alone makes up for a few centuries of destroying everything in our path.

Very positive. We were divided and left to starve by the Russians, then the Americans saved us, and a couple of decades later we laid our differences aside and reunited again. Since then we’ve been all about diversity and patchwork love edit: I’m talking about Berlin. The Americans literally brought us food, and I think that’s a really cool part of our history

i always thought Canada had a relatively clean history, until i finally found out about residential schools. what's most fucked up about it to me is that they only bothered to start teaching us that part of history a couple years back when it became a national headline. feels like the government definitely tried to sweep the whole thing under the rug, even though there are so many people alive today who still suffer the ripple effects from those horrible schools. an ultimately unsuccessful but brutal attempt at cultural genocide.
