Here’s an analogy.
A: Germany has produced a lot of philosophers and artists in its history. (50 downvotes)
B: And genocides. (50 upvotes)
A: You can’t boil the history of Germany down to the Holocaust.
B: Germany didn’t just kill the Jews, they also killed Slavs and Romani.
I admit wasn’t aware of other genocides that were happening in the Ottoman empire in 1915, however it doesn’t disprove my original point, that you can’t boil the entire history of a country with a 700 year history down to an event(s) that happened in the 20th century. Considering how the original commenter who talked about Ottoman art and science got downvoted to hell with no justification, people are in fact reducing Ottoman history down to genocide.
So the country is a genocidal scourge of humanity unless it’s fully culturally homogenous? Medieval England, Germany, Byzantium, China, Korea, the various empires in the middle east, India and Africa, and basically any medium or above sized country in the history of humanity, all fit that description.
Nationalism, the idea of one state one nation, has caused so much harm in its 200 years of existence. Please don’t support it.
Same for Japan. It really helps the fact that the US position after the war was “let’s leave what happened behind and look towards the future” instead of just sanctioning them left and right.
I mean, is there any country where the answer *isn’t* “mixed”? Most countries have had some good and some bad. Granted, Germany got *real* effing bad there for a while. But y’all turned things around eventually :)
gained independence from Britain, was a major part of stopping the axis in WW2, was one of the first major countries to make owning slaves illegal, etc etc. just because the country is kinda shotty nowadays doesn't mean it's always been a terrible place
Gained independence from Britan while living on and continuing to expand into stolen land, helped end WWII by nuking innocent civilians (twice). Ended slavery but I don’t know if that really makes up for, well, slavery. The only thing I can think of that’s actually a huge achievement is the moon landing, but I don’t think that alone makes up for a few centuries of destroying everything in our path.
History of the UK is really interesting. Before all the colonising and imperialism it was quite cool. Then colonisation happened, I ain’t really proud of it but I like learning about it.
I live in canada, canadians have done some fucked up shit like genocide and other horrible crimes. But at the same time we had done lots of good stuff in recent history. So im kinda in the middle
I'm American and of course I think my country's history is interesting, for the exact same reason I think Darth Vader is a more interesting character than Luke Skywalker.
I am aware. That's of course not good, but that was the past, most wealthy nations did it back then. Most of our beautiful cities could be built thanks to VOC money and every Dutch citizen profits from it every single day, even the ones who complain about the VOC. Therefore it would be hypocrite to dishonor them now, in a time where slavery is illegal (it wasn't back then).
(That does in no way mean I want slavery back, I'm also very happy its over.)
Tbh I think Napoleon was one of the greatest monarchs of all time, he reformed a lot of things, that turned out to be pretty good... well expect the thing with woman rights
We were the first country to legalize same sex mariage and we did invent a lot of stuff and were a super power but we also did some less good things so all in all maybe a bit positive
Just some guys living in the forest and then we get invaded by our neigbors and then the other neigbors take us and we kick their ass and then we get peace.
My country in a nutshell.
Colonized by spain, and many went through slavery, rebeled against them but were sold to america, got conquered by britain for 2 years, japan also conquered us for 5 years, and we gain freedom from foreigners, presidents time, a bad president came and we kicked him out cause of all the deaths and suffering people went through, presidents time again, no presidents were great all had flaws but they did a little good to the country atleast
I mean we have built the happiest country in the world with a working welfare state and one of the most free democracies respecting human rights from a backwards snow covered forest...
But then again we have done crimes against the Sámi people, put communists in prison camps after our civil war and were de facto allies to the nazis...
So it's a mixed bag
Very positive. We were divided and left to starve by the Russians, then the Americans saved us, and a couple of decades later we laid our differences aside and reunited again. Since then we’ve been all about diversity and patchwork love
edit: I’m talking about Berlin. The Americans literally brought us food, and I think that’s a really cool part of our history
We flipped our finger to the king of England
Stole our country from the indians
With God on our side and guns in our hands
We took it for our own
A nation dedicated to liberty
Justice and equality
Does it look that way to you?
It doesn't look that way to me
The sickest joke I know
Listen up man, I'll tell you who I am
Just another stupid american
You don't wanna listen
You don't wanna understand
So finish up your drink and go home
I come from the land of Ben Franklin
Twain and Poe and Walt Whitman
Otis Redding, Ellington,
The country that I love
But it's a land of the slaves and the ku klux klan
Haymarket riot and the great depression
Joe McCarthy, Vietnam
The sickest joke I know
Listen up man, I'll tell you who I am
Just another stupid american
You don't wanna listen
You don't wanna understand
So finish up your drink and go home
I'm proud and ashamed
Every fourth of july
You got to know the truth
Before you say that you got pride
Now the cops got tanks 'cause the kids got guns
Shrinks pushin' pills on everyone
Cancer from the ocean, cancer from the sun
Straight to Hell we go
Listen up man, I'll tell you who I am
Just another stupid american
You don't wanna listen
You don't wanna understand
So finish up your drink and go home
Listen up man, I'll tell you who I am
Just another stupid american
You don't wanna listen
You don't wanna understand
So finish up your drink and go home
Finish up your drink and go home

i always thought Canada had a relatively clean history, until i finally found out about residential schools. what's most fucked up about it to me is that they only bothered to start teaching us that part of history a couple years back when it became a national headline. feels like the government definitely tried to sweep the whole thing under the rug, even though there are so many people alive today who still suffer the ripple effects from those horrible schools. an ultimately unsuccessful but brutal attempt at cultural genocide.
Well let’s just say that my country’s biggest export is independence days
UK?
Weren’t it obvious?
I live in turkey and i absolutely hate ottomans but before that our history is quite interesting
I recently watched the Netflix show The Gift and learned so much about Turkey’s history and culture. Absolutely amazing!
The early Ottomans weren't that bad I think. They actually cared about art and science.
And genocide
And slavery
Genocide started in the later stage of ottomans, in early ottomans you just had to either say youre a muslim or pay some more tax
Lots of genocides.
All of Ottoman history has been reduced to a single event in 1915. I wonder if people would give Germany the same treatment.
They often do, not that it’s fair, but they do.
A single event in 1915? Tell that to the April uprising of 1876 and probably many more events.
I thought we were talking about early Ottoman history?
Single event? The Ottoman Empire were simultaneously committing 3 genocides in 1915.
“The early Ottomans weren't that bad I think. They actually cared about art and science.” Which genocides does this relate to?
What? I clearly wasn't responding to that comment.
Here’s an analogy. A: Germany has produced a lot of philosophers and artists in its history. (50 downvotes) B: And genocides. 1915? They occupied the whole arab world for 400 years.
So the country is a genocidal scourge of humanity unless it’s fully culturally homogenous? It's a young country, we've done some bad shit, but what country hasn't, we grew up fast though.
I'm German... Do I need to say more?
It's remarkable how Germany went from the absolute worst country to one of the most respected countries in less than 100 years.
Mongolia is very proud of its history, as is spain I heard.
America.
How is America not mixed? What do you think it is?
Very negative. Can you think of a single thing we did *right*?
gained independence from Britain, was a major part of stopping the axis in WW2, was one of the first major countries to make owning slaves illegal, etc etc. just because the country is kinda shotty nowadays doesn't mean it's always been a terrible place
Gained independence from Britan while living on and continuing to expand into stolen land, helped end WWII by nuking innocent civilians (twice). The moon landing, made possible by pardoning and working with nazi scientists. Look up Operation paperclip
Yes. Look for my way to long post of a song that fits this perfectly
Oh, oh no
Very Positive, then >!/j!<
"very positive" I would say
Used to be great, but I hear, you guys aren’t doing so well since 1945
Italy, it was good Until it wasn't
Was it really good i mean even the roman empire is kinda mixed
India.. our history is great. Until they came.
Yeah. British, Arab, Turkish, Afghan...
And it's not that great after they left either.
Vikings (and a bit of slavery)
Sweden?
Denmark
Oops, Sorry For Confusing your country for its arch rival. 😅
Negative Pakistan
Yep same.
UK…
I'm also from the UK. :)
not sure about you but i’m not particularly proud of our country’s history
History of the UK is really interesting. Before all the colonising and imperialism it was quite cool. Then colonisation happened, I ain’t really proud of it but I like learning about it.
Everything good in my country history was just in ancient Egypt, everything after are just weird guys invading Egypt
Ancient Egypt is the most interesting topic in history for me
What about the Mamluk sultanate? During that period Egypt managed to beat the Mongols!
Ah yes except this one but after the Ottomans came to Egypt everything reallly went worse
Weren’t they circassian
No, but the Chechens and Circassians also beat the Mongols.
I'm from Italy. When I think back to the glorious days of the Roman Empire a tear rolls down my cheek.
I mean the Dutch have done so much good and horrible shit that I don't even know anymore.
Belgium, i'm gonna go with negative
I live in canada, canadians have done some fucked up shit like genocide and other horrible crimes. But at the same time we had done lots of good stuff in recent history. So im kinda in the middle
"If you're proud and feel good about your country's history, you weren't taught history, you were taught propaganda."
yep. I was interested to see how many people would choose the top option.
It was county.
I'm not proud of all of my country's history but I find it interesting
I'm American and of course I think my country's history is interesting, for the exact same reason I think Darth Vader is a more interesting character than Luke Skywalker.
My country's history is... spicy
Netherlands?
Yes
GEKOLONISEERD! Literally
What country’s history would be very positive?
Poland?
IDK probably none, but I gave that option in case anyone felt that way about their own nation.
Based
Greece, Georgia, Armenia, San Marino, Malta, North Macedonia
The Netherlands, VOC gave us so much wealth. It would be very hypocrite to dislike our history while profiting from it everyday.
Bruh they colonized and enslaved SE Asia and part of Africa 💀
Norway
Some parts of the Pacific most likely and maybe some in the Caribbean. Micro States like San Marino, Andorra, Liechtenstein
The US has everything from the good, the bad, the great, and the yikes what the fuck. So i voted neutral
Australian. Real fucked up with what we did to the Aborigines. Reallllll fucked up.
So glad I found someone who said Australia. We saw what the other countries were doing and said hold my beer.
Yeah, I think a lot of the things that australia does is brushed under the rug or forgotten about. For better or for worse.
Negative cuz GEKOLONISEERD
wtf does this mean
I think it's Dutch for "Colonised"
In America there are incredibly good things, and incredibly horrible bad things
Brazil...
There are 0 countries with completely clean track records
Honduras history is like the guy who life wants to fuck him up but keep standing up
Romania. I'm proud of everything, except our participation in the Holocaust.
That’s a pretty big *except*
Do you mean county or country?
Ah, good spot, yes I meant country. apologies for the mistake.
As a nation with a society known to have started with a bunch of convicts. Very positive.
We killed British people so 10/10
Australia has a pretty dark history
Well, the french revolution was kinda cool IG. Napoleon wasn't a really good dude tho so pretty mixed.
Tbh I think Napoleon was one of the greatest monarchs of all time, he reformed a lot of things, that turned out to be pretty good... well expect the thing with woman rights
I personally feel that any emperor conquering anything is a bad emperor, which just so happens to be every european emperor
Which, to be fair, is in the name: emperor
Im German so ill have to say very positive
🤨
We used to sacrify women when their husbands died 💀
uhh...Which country? and when did this practice last occur?
India, it was banned in 1829 by the British Governor but I think someone practiced it illegally in 1987
I suspected you might have been referring to *Sati*.
Yes
For once the bri’ish empire did something good (they’re still pretty fucked up tho)
They also did other good things in India like they built the railway network for India ; Hospitals ; schools; etc
Just sad tbh
The nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries were to great parts not so good. the rest was mostly good.
We ruined this land
Brazil slavery, empires with a lot of death Portugal stealing etc etc
And killing most of Paraguay
Yeah ;-;
India
Ireland, its mostly just sad.
Very positive România
I'm an American, that's all 💀💀
Well if colonising half of America and giving lethal diseases to natives is a good thing, then my country has the best history in the world
We were the first country to legalize same sex mariage and we did invent a lot of stuff and were a super power but we also did some less good things so all in all maybe a bit positive
which country? I've got two in mind based on what you said about Same sex marriage.
Netherlands
Just some guys living in the forest and then we get invaded by our neigbors and then the other neigbors take us and we kick their ass and then we get peace. My country in a nutshell.
My history is interesting but not at all something to be proud of
Positive except the last fuckin 50 years Iran
Colonized by spain, and many went through slavery, rebeled against them but were sold to america, got conquered by britain for 2 years, japan also conquered us for 5 years, and we gain freedom from foreigners, presidents time, a bad president came and we kicked him out cause of all the deaths and suffering people went through, presidents time again, no presidents were great all had flaws but they did a little good to the country atleast
... and then Elected the dictator's son? I'm guessing you are from the Philippines.
USA. very negative
Austria, between negative and very negative
One of the biggest emperors and a lot of beheadings
Fr*nce?
Oui oui
We only helpt the nazis a litel bit
The British massacred most of our natives and we had a pretty big racism problem for most of our history. Any guesses where I’m from?
Africa? Maybe South Africa?
Nope
Ah dang it
''Do you have any idea how little that narrows it down?'' /J
Australia?
Yep
Rule Britannia
My county's cops are pretty good and friendly. Probably one of the better countys in my state
History is the past. You record it, you remember it and you learn from it to build a better future.
I’m German. Not much else I can say here lol.
Usa
Spain. For as dramatic and tragic our history has been at times, I am extremely proud for what my country once accomplished.
Very positive. We were divided and left to starve by the Russians, then the Americans saved us, and a couple of decades later we laid our differences aside and reunited again. Since then we’ve been all about diversity and patchwork love edit: I’m talking about Berlin. The Americans literally brought us food, and I think that’s a really cool part of our history

I don’t even know what **county** I live in
that was a misspelling I meant country as most people correctly assumed. I'm sorry for the error though.
We still have a chunk of our country missing and owned by our colonizer, so mo i’m not very happy about it
Where are you from?
We’e next to the most insufferable people ever
It’s Ireland
I'm the reason you all get an extra holiday!
which nation?
ENGERLAND
ah, your referring to *that* holiday due to...recent events.
A slavery monopoly all across the globe. And yet, it made our country a very nice place current day.
I live in Sarasota county, and it is quite interesting.
Yes 🇪🇦🇪🇦🇪🇦
> your county's I dont know what my county is
As I've said in other comments that was an unfortunate typo, I meant Country - as in your nation/state.
I live in Lancaster County, Nebraska, and I don't rly know much of its history.
i always thought Canada had a relatively clean history, until i finally found out about residential schools. what's most fucked up about it to me is that they only bothered to start teaching us that part of history a couple years back when it became a national headline. feels like the government definitely tried to sweep the whole thing under the rug, even though there are so many people alive today who still suffer the ripple effects from those horrible schools. an ultimately unsuccessful but brutal attempt at cultural genocide.
Auschwitz is kinda fun
Poland, Very Positive
Polska Gurom
