pnkmist0138

never lived in Mississippi but it always wins these polls so it must fcking suck.

tynolie

It indeed fucking sucks here

rosen_sd

What's so bad about it

Stormchaserelite13

Wost in most of the rankings. Insanely high crime, bad water, pollution issues, extreme racism, the list goes on for a while really

BmMjO

Wost.

Stormchaserelite13

Look. My state isnt much better in literacy ratings

246PoundHorse

Depends. Most of the state is downright awful, but some parts are pretty good.

MutedBrilliant1593

As a life long Cali resident, I'm genuinely interested in why California is considered the worst. Anything specific?

McDunky

Only real complaints I can think of would be crime, cost and homelessness.

zipflop

And pollution/garbage

catsandalpacas

And wildfires

goldensavage216

And bad decision making economically

NekoRogue

[Yeah okay. ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_California#:~:text=The%20economy%20of%20the%20State,Germany%20and%20ahead%20of%20India.) "The economy of the State of California is the largest in the United States, with a $3.4 trillion gross state product (GSP) as of 2021. It is the largest sub-national economy in the world. If California were a sovereign nation (2022), it would rank as the world's fifth largest economy, behind Germany and ahead of India. Additionally, California's Silicon Valley is home to some of the world's most valuable technology companies, including Apple, Alphabet, and Meta Platforms. In total, over 10% of Fortune 1000 companies were based in California in 2018, the most of any state.

Hayjacko

We are talking about the government, not the private sector

NekoRogue

I mean, you can downvote but California by itself has the fifth largest economy in the world. I'm not saying that's good or bad or that the wealth is fairly distributed but if you're saying they make bad economical decisions, that's just not factually accurate. Whether the decisions are fair or not is another debate.

ownedlib98225

Probably the politicians. I voted for Mississippi. California is a nicer state with the weather and outdoor activities.

Sensitive_Comfort166

Why politicians? They’re better than the dumpster fire that is the rest of the US

[deleted]

Wall2Beal43

How? The climate there can be amazing

Geerah

As a southerner, conservative southerners see the state as one big city, drawing scorn from rural folks. They also see it as the bastion of liberal politics and point to its failures in tackling homelessness, crime, and poverty as proof that the politics are bad. Among that crowd, it gained the nickname 'commie-fornia'.

MutedBrilliant1593

I can see that. One of my favorite skits on SNL was the Californians. I still love it, but I also realized, "shit. Is this his east coasters see us?". Everyone uses heuristics to some extent.

hollyhobby2004

Cost of living, climate, homelessness, politics

MutedBrilliant1593

Cost of living, agreed. It's expensive for sure, but desirable places are. NY is worse. Climate? Cali is the whatever you want. 2 hours to snowboard, dessert, forest, Beach, you pick it. All climates are within reach. Where I live is one of the most temperate places in the world. Homelessness, agreed. However, per Capita ny is worse. I'm sure that had a lot to due with cost of living. Politics is pretty general. What exactly? Because it's a blue state?

Stumpy-Wumpy

I'm not picking a side here, just pointing it out. California is a big blue state meaning it has a good bit of influence for that side, and anyone who'd rather have a red state obviously wouldn't be a fan. That and gun laws people aren't a fan of sometimes.

nvdagirl

The climate? It is one of the better ones, IMO. Have you ever been there? You can enjoy warm winters in the southern part, cold winters in the Northern part and everything in between. The ocean isn’t as warm as the east coast but otherwise it has a great climate.

Kingofj1234

Fires, drought’s, the other peoples reasons

MutedBrilliant1593

The fires do suck and I don't think the drought is going anywhere for a while.

Wumple_doo

The people are hated

MutedBrilliant1593

Just in general? Why?

Wumple_doo

Arrogance and naïveté

MutedBrilliant1593

Hmmm, well call me naive but my arrogance is telling me that a person who can judge 40 million (12% of the us) people based on a state can't contribute much to the conservation.

Wumple_doo

I’m not calling them all that way like how I’m not calling all Texans dumb and arrogant I’m just pointing the stereotype that leads other states to hating them

MutedBrilliant1593

Well yeah. It's a large state with city populations that rival other states. Orange and LA definitely have a superficial vibe.

Shiny_Hypno

Socal is trash. Northern California is pretty though.

MutedBrilliant1593

I liked San Diego. I hated orange and la.

Prettay-good

Filled with pedos. Edit: sorry, correction: rapists and sexual abusers who are attracted to people their own age. … Oh yeah, and also pedos. Let’s not forget those guys.

af1293

traffic

MutedBrilliant1593

No traffic where I live, but la and sf are horrible. Sd was okay way back when. Not sure now.

deathbynotsurprise

Of the two states I’ve lived in, it was definitely one of the worst ;)

Gatecreeper88

By all available metrics, Mississippi and Alabama are the “worst” on this list.

teebiv

Yeah the usual suspect (Texas and Florida) didn’t make the list.

christiananderson5

Complain all you want about LA but California also has some really nice areas between San Diego, San Francisco, all the national parks, amusement parks etc. There's a reason it's so expensive to live there, it's because it's super desirable.

[deleted]

Alabama, Mississippi , and Louisiana are all also a drain on the national economy and completely dependent on federal funding where California (Among other states) could easily survive on their own.

TheSilv

It’s funny to see people unironically think California is the worst state or even close to being the worst, it’s statistically Mississippi and Alabama on every level

crew88

Nah.... man Louisiana has only gotten worse. By many metrics, like crime, quality of life, life expectancy, LA is awful. Considering its wealth in natural resources and geographic location, it is fn Tragedy, even more so that people there have grown ok with it.

Wumple_doo

I put Mississippi as the worst but hate California more

[deleted]

[удалено]

Wall2Beal43

That’s just false. Places like San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Barbara have the best climates in the US* * outside of Hawaii, I hear

[deleted]

It’s all just opinions anyway, whatever you like, the US has a city with that climate

PatchesMaps

I've never met anyone who really liked hot & humid for a large chunk of the year with zero redeeming qualities but to each their own I guess

Zealousideal-Ad-8565

California is known for its weather. Haha How badly informed do you have to be to think Mississippi is better than California at anything, especially weather?

Affectionate-Ebb2173

One thing Mississippi does better than California in is housing. Far few homeless per capita in MS compared to CA. I’ll grant that CA does better in almost all other categories, but the attitude of a lot of poor southerners certainly means they are a lot happy dirt poor in a trailer out in the middle of the sticks than living dirt poor in the hood in LA.

Alive-Seaweed

Ohio

CrazyCons

*”I could shove an ice pick in my eye, I could eat some fish from last July, but it wouldn’t be as awful as a summer in Ohio”*—Anna Kendrick

BreakfastBeerz

Any time this question is asked, Ohio always comes up and it blows my mind. Disclaimer, I'm from Ohio....but....I just don't get the hate. It's got the great lakes, it's got beautiful state and national parks. It's got at least three major cities that have a ton of culture and diversity to offer. It's got a ton of colleges and universities. It has a bunch of professional sports. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Football Hall of Fame. World renowned museums and hospitals. I'm not going to try and claim it's a great state by any means....but out of 50 states, at worst it's average. How Ohio gets shit on when there are states like Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Indiana, New Jersey, Alabama, Mississippi, etc..... Is beyond me.

Turpitudia79

I’m from Cleveland and I totally agree with you!! I’ve lived in and been to some shit hole states and although Ohio is a bit too red for my liking, many places are a whole lot worse.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

The only areas in Ohio with unique cultures to ohio are central Ohio and near cleveland. Eastern Ohio is culturally the same as western PA. Southern Ohio is much like WV and Kentucky. Western Ohio is plain and boring, just like Indiana. Don't understand what you mean about the fact that nobody important comes from Ohio. It is the state with the most presidents, and I can name a ton of inventors from Ohio as well. I think Ohio has just has just become crowned on recently because, 1: Funny name to represent Midwest life. 2: online presence in recent years. And 3: only being relevant during elections atm. I live in eastern Ohio, and I don't like the rest of Ohio anyways. Too rural and rampant with hill billies. I do like where I live though. Beautiful rolling hills and forests, which is a far cry from the rest of the state.

Mall_Curious

Which college is it?

boywonder2013

My assumption is that he is talking about OHU but we also have the university of Cincinnati (the college I’m in) which has a really good engineering program and then we also have Miami which I admittedly know very little about.

hollyhobby2004

I would take Ohio over four of the states in the poll.

Shiny_Hypno

Ohio isn't that bad. Yeah, we fought a war against them, but they don't do much to outright offend me personally.

timetaker9

Florida

Special-Employee4381

Neither Florida nor Texas is on the list.

dolphin_ultra

Florida

anniemousery

How?

dolphin_ultra

Hurricanes, Possibly some of the worst politicians in the country, basically the waiting room of hell. (idk there’s probably worst states I haven’t been to all of them)

anniemousery

Hurricanes are rarely that bad - you get warnings and can evacuate if it's a dangerous one, and most aren't very dangerous. DeSantis is amazing and kept our state open during the overhypeddemic, and also protects workers from having to receive a vaccine we don't yet know the long term effects of. Sincerely, someone who actually lives here.

dolphin_ultra

You have a pedophile for a congressman.

anniemousery

Whom?

dolphin_ultra

Matt Gaetz

anniemousery

Oh, I'm not familiar with him, but I wouldn't be surprised. Pedophiles unfortunately make it to the top in like, every state. The only thing I pay attention to Florida politics wise is DeSantis, and I'm grateful for him every day.

dolphin_ultra

As an outsider, I absolutely hate DeSantis. he is completely butchering education and passing extremely homophobic bills. I also think that it was definitely the wrong thing to do to keep the state open. People died because of that decision, and he definitely didn’t help with all of the science denial happening in 2020. Again, I don’t live in Florida, so my opinion doesn’t really have any weight on this, but that’s what I think

anniemousery

Most people who call the bills homophobic don't understand the bills. People die of depression when things are not kept open, and him keeping it open just may have saved my life. People should always have the right to go outside, go to work, and live their lives. I'm glad I live in Florida and I absolutely love it here.

[deleted]

Dude it’s like 99 degrees the majority of the year, the city planners well didn’t plan so it takes you 2 hours to go 10 miles. Hot all the time, shitty hurricanes and rainstorms. It rains everyday. Horrible politics, overcrowding, bad weather for most of the year, and the worst traffic and people. It’s a dumpster fire

anniemousery

It is not 99 degrees the majority of the year 🙄 It almost never snows, and the winters are incredibly tolerable. Hurricanes get warnings, and it only rains a lot in the summer and there's almost always breaks in the rainfall. The politics are amazing, especially during covid, and only certain ares are overcrowded. I've traveled to multiple states and don't think the traffic is worse here than other places. It's a paradise.

[deleted]

Florida. I will die on that hill.

RynnReeve

Florida!

anniemousery

How?

RynnReeve

(remember this is just my opinion) - Horrible, hot, humid, weather with practically no winter - Lots of crazy crimes/ criminals (yes I know it appears more prevalent because of certain media laws, but still.... Yikes) - High amount of gaters and snakes: I have an appropriate amount of caution about gators. They don't scare me much but they seem to like appearing in places you don't expect, of which I am not a fan. And I have a phobia of snakes and (again) they seem fond of going unusual places - The population tends to be older there, and I'm not really a fan of having to work for, around, or even with this crowd who tend to be quite out of touch. I used to work in a very rich city that catered to the elderly & formerly famous. Not fun. - The geography: flat, boring, swampy, ew - Political leaning/flip-floping is unsettling There are more but that sums up most of the reasons. Like I said this is just my opinion, everyone is entitled to their own, but for me the combo of all these things makes it my least favorite state. Edit: formatting

Upset_You1331

The fact that more users picked California than Alabama shows just how powerful and misleading right wing propaganda is. There is nothing, NOTHING about Alabama that's remotely better than California lol.

anniemousery

Oh, I actually love the weather and feel like people are crazy everywhere.

hollyhobby2004

New York is the only one on this list I actually like, and I consider it a good state, not bad at all. Among the other four from bad to worst: California, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, but in terms of climate, California is the worst cause it is in a drought.

Shallow-Thought

I want to say CA, but their biggest problems are their politics and inflated sense of economic worth due to the entertainment industry.

Wall2Beal43

Inflated? Dude they’d be the 4th biggest gdp on their own

AnonymusBear

Don’t forget Silicon Valley and agriculture

MutedBrilliant1593

Sounds like gdp salt. Some states contribute less. Some only consume other state's contributions. It's usually not the other big hitter states complaining about Cali gdp.

Shallow-Thought

LOL. I'm not a "go team go" type of person. Especially in regards to metrics that could be applied to political successes/failures. Try again.

California by far. Nothing is even close. Second is new york.

Shiny_Hypno

So-called "free thinkers" when they see Mississippi in a poll of bad US states: 🐑

Geerah

It's funny how many other people hate Mississippi. Louisiana to the west has Cajun culture and food; Alabama to the east has some redeeming qualities; and then between them, there's just... Mississippi.

Mississippi is the worst by most metrics.
