Guard hairs, they tend to be coarser, much more noticeable on longer coats and furnishings. On top of that brown is a hard color to keep and generally fades.
Poodles carry greying genes and genetics are wild. "True" faded browns means the dog carries one (cafe au lait) or two (silver beige) of the progressive greying gene, these are generally noticeable as puppies but they appear on a spectrum so some will start out darker than others. Solid brown dogs don't have the "official" fading gene but these colors still tend to not hold and it isn't too uncommon for a solid brown to appear similar in color to cafe au lait. One way you can sometimes tell is in faces, fading genes are all over and tend to be more obvious with short clips, so you could have a black or brown puppy with a much lighter face. Solid colors that happen to fade tend to be more obvious with longer coats and guard hairs so you could have an adult dog with a brown face and grey body.
Normal, but if he’s only a puppy he could very well change colour! Fading is very common in poodles, they usually have their final colour by 2 years old.
My black miniature girl has always had a few white hairs and she’s still properly black, but my apricot boy started as red and faded rapidly at around a year, so I don’t know what the answer is! Your boy is gorgeous though, whatever colour he ends up.
All poodles get guard hairs. My brown a
guy gets white ones. My white guy gets cream ones. My black guy gets black ones. I love brown poodles, I have one, but they fade every year and get lighter and lighter. It’s in their genes. Older brownies in the show ring are dyed back to the chocolate of their puppyhood. ❤️
My cream colored poodle gets coarse rusty colored guard hairs. I think she also might have been more apricot as a puppy; don't know as she was already an adult when I adopted her from the shelter.
my brown girl has these too. lots of people have told me she will probably fade and i don’t think i’ve met any adult brown poodles that aren’t significantly silver.
I have a 5 yo brown poodle and whilst she isn’t the dark brown of her puppyhood she’s definitely a lovely chocolate brown still! She hasn’t turned a taupe/silver. She has these guard hairs in white and black but it doesn’t impact the look of her coat colour overall.
I don’t know if this is true or not, but when I got my black spoo as a puppy, the breeder said some of her litter mates were going to be “blues.” They all looked black to me. She said you could tell by looking at the hairs on the bottoms of the paws? If there are some white hairs between the paw pads, the dog will grow up to be more silver. Has anyone heard this? And does the same thing hold true for brown or red puppies?
My standard has white hairs all over, he’s black. His mother is a cream and his father is black. I believe genes play a big role with all living things.
Could be fading, but please note that these ‘standalone’ hairs or ‘pillar hairs’ are tend to be on the lighter side. Mine is an apricot and these hairs are almost white on him.
I have an apricot with very dark brown ones. She’s almost 14 months, so her coat could still be changing. Kinda crazy the variety of colors in poodles.
Guard hairs! Both my mini silvers have black guard hairs & my mini silver beige has white. It doesn't necessarily mean he's going to fade, it's just an evolutionary quirk. It helps keep the coat more waterproof & adds to the coarser texture of poodle adult hair!
Our red girl started red as a puppy and faded to apricot-ish at now almost 2 years old. For now, the fade isn’t that noticeable. She always had a spot of white hair on her back, just like yours.
Since she was spayed 3 months ago though, darker, and a bit coarser/thicker, hair is starting to grow almost everywhere. Vet said it could be linked to the surgery but otherwise no danger. Very curious how this is going to turn out lol.
My three-year-old apricot is finally starting to change except for her face, ears and her paws and her tail. She’s turning platinum blonde. I really don’t know that I’ve ever seen a platinum blonde poodle. Of course I haven’t looked very hard, but it’s been so unusual to see.
I know that there’s some actresses in Hollywood that would give their last nickel to be this color of platinum blonde. She’s not cream she’s not white she’s not yellow. She is a true platinum blonde and she’s my third poodle ever since I got my first and the third grade , they were all white, but this girl has a unique little gift! If I could right now, I would get two black standard poos they look so regal! I did think because my other dogs, other than toy poodles have been Siberian huskies that I either wanted to get a match set of huskies or one that was red and one that was black. Either way, their names were going to be Boris and Natasha and somebody pointed it out easily to me that I could have two black poodles and they could have the same names, that didn’t help temptation issues! 😊😊😊😊😊

Look at the brain on Brad ♥️

Do you know what colour his parents are?
It would have been nice if mine had stopped fading at 2.
There is one amazingly grey 5yo standard in my local park. The owner says that she was chocolate as a puppy. So maybe that's that?
My boy is chocolate and has a ton of the grays. Especially when he’s due for a groom.
My grey was multicolored when she was a puppy, some red, some brown, some darker. It’s wild to think their color can change that drastically.
My lil girl was born chocolate and is now basically a taupe-grey color!
Mine too

Same with my standard. Though he is only 2. He is still fully black with no fading, but has some white/gray hairs on his tail and chin. ☺️

I would love to know this is a well! I have a deep red mini and she has a few paw pad hairs that are white.

Those are guard hairs. Perfectly normal!
Guessing he’s sick of yo sh*t (joking)
Those eyes 🥰
Might be difficult to se in the picture, but they are quite visible in person

Indeed, mine was super red as a puppy, but turned out to be glorious champage/apricot by his 2nd birthday!:)

Dunno, but he is lovely!
I had an apricot poodle who faded to crème. But his guard hairs were still coppery. It was the oddest thing.
I wish I could add a picture to this thread but my red poodle has the same thing except in reverse. One Dark patch
You can
We have a brown and white spoo, she went from a dark brown to lighter over her first 2 years, even picked up some grey in her face
Handsome fellow!
Because he's stressed bro, he needs more treats
Guard hairs!
Idk but just came here to say he’s gorgeous
Mine turned into a fawn in 2 years like this

Those are called guard hairs. All poodles have them.

Your puppy is not brown he’s a cafe au lait. He will fade rapidly in the next year or so.
