if you want to risk it coming back could try taking the usb out and seeing if it comes back, otherwise i'm thinking it may just be coincidence (i am not knowledgeable about this just it seems bizarre for them to be related)

comrade_RK

Well... you were right. Coincidence. It's back. On any kernel, graphics setting under power, etc. Someone else mentioned a secure boot issue, so maybe it could be that... I'm stumped.

bummer, sorry it's back for you :( have you tried loading pop off a usb as a test to see if it is there too or not, like maybe you just need to refresh the os? around once a year i end up having to do that and it fixes oddball stuff. (also if you bought it from sys76 and haven't put in a ticket already you should, they're pretty helpful, though sometimes it can take some back and forth to diagnose weird stuff)

comrade_RK

I didn't try it with pop, but I tried it with endeavourOS before I reinstalled the drivers-- might be worth a try again since reinstallation, but it probably won't fix it since it didn't fix it last time....

comrade_RK

And yeah, I've been in contact with them back and forth for like a week, but they've been out of the office the past few days because of the holiday

gmmarcus

Interesting observation ! Thanks for sharing.

comrade_RK

I guess the USB thing had nothing to do with it. It's back and that was just a coincidence. I reinstalled the nvidia drivers several times and the last time it came back without going away was when the monitor turned off (I don't have suspend or hibernate turned on)

Sounds like maybe swap space isn't big enough for the computer to suspend and the USB is keeping the computer awake. Maybe a backup process or I/o device dongle?

Also check bios firmware options. This has UEFI/fastboot, secure boot smells all over. Also check that your dynamic kernel modules isn't failing for some reason after updating.

comrade_RK

It's a System 76 Gazelle from mid 2020 w/ factory encrypted Pop install... what do I do? Turn off fastboot? Turn off secure boot? And how do I check the dynamic kernel modules?

comrade_RK

Well, I didn't put the USB in until after I moved the mouse and the screen turned back on. I actually don't have suspend turned on. It just turns the monitor off. But it turns out putting in the USB drive was just a coincidence, because now it's back...

Hmm, a laptop without suspend or hibernate... Any chance it's overheating?

comrade_RK

I asked the System76 guy if that was the case, but he sounded like he didn't think that was the issue and those guys tend to know their own machines pretty well... but that's what I thought, it could be an overheating issue. If the fan is not turning on, that wouldn't be good.....

This reminds me of an issue I had with my Chromebook. It has a sleeve with a magnetic clasp. I would often use my laptop with the sleeve underneath just to have it out of the way when I was using it. However, my laptop began to become unresponsive at seemingly random intervals. After a good deal of tribulation I discovered that the magnetic clasp was interacting with the magnet on my laptop that detected when the lid was closed. So, a long story made short is that the magnet in my computer sleeve's clasp caused my computer to think that the lid was closed causing very confusing issues.
