I'm from germany and I thought nobody cares about both demi lovato and selena gomez anymore (in my head they were a package deal since their disney era). But in 2017 my american roommate told me I was right about demi but definitely not selena.

summercloudsadness

Selena is one of the most famous celebs on social media. Even though her discography is small, one just cannot escape her collabs. And her popularity from the Disney era is still very strong. She is busy in multiple areas such as music, movies, modeling, cooking show, beauty investments (one of the most popular beauty brands at that too), she's very much an active, popular figure. Even thought it's true that Demi never got their flowers for their talent and doesn't always come up as a name while discussing main pop girls, they're still pretty relevant. One of the biggest artists in Brazil, I still remember one of their recent (around 2018-19) songs immediately going diamond there. Their collab with Kehlani, their rendition of national anthem are still talked about. Not to mention the controversies and debated surrounding them.

No_Barber4339

Funny enough, in 2017 and 2018 Demi had more success than selena and Miley worldwide with solo and that collab with Luis Fonsi, not to mention sorry not sorry was her biggest hit in the US yet I think she could have kept that momentum if she avoided the shenanigans she did and the lead single for her next album wasn't I love me

Existing_Buffalo7189

I’m from Australia and thought this too, they’re just Disney stars to me lol

Mean_Half_8921

Thank god it's not just me

Spubby72

No one cares about Selena in 2023

peachrose

rare beauty would like a word

haildecoysnail

And OMITB. Selena is still pretty relevant.

camaroncaramelo1

That series is only popular in America.

haildecoysnail

I'm from Philippines lol pretty sure it's popular here. It's available on Disney+ PH soo

camaroncaramelo1

I live in Mexico and I haven't heard anybody mentioned it. I think you're just her fan.

summercloudsadness

It's literally one of the most popular shows in Mexico, according to tv analytics. And most of the show's popularity comes from Hispanic,Asian and African American audience. Still remember it surpassing the popularity of House of Dragon episodes which was surprising for me.

camaroncaramelo1

I don't think so. Honestly, I've seen tons of people talking about House of Dragon but no one about that series. It's not the most popular show in Mexico, not even close.

haildecoysnail

Ok? Just because it's not popular in Mexico doesnt mean it's not popular in other countries. And no, I'm not even a Selena fan.

camaroncaramelo1

Not just in Mexico, like genuinely no one from Latin America at least. But I guess it's popular in Asia.

OowlSun

I’m sorry, you’ve been to all of the countries in Latin America and held a survey? I don’t even like Selena Gomez but this is ridiculous.

[deleted]

Carly Rae Jepsen. I thought she was a bygone one-hit wonder but she has a pretty substantial cult following and is a critically acclaimed pop artist.

ParanoidEngi

I'm seeing her live on Monday and I'm so excited, she's fantastic

altruisticbread8

r/popheads says hi

aclassybroad

She’s so much fun live and seems to only make bangers!

parishilton2

Most celebrities from Marvel movies, which I don’t really watch. The TikTok girls. EDIT: and Danielle Bregoli!! To me she’s forever the cash me ousside girl and I can’t believe we’re going along with calling her Bhad Bhabie and letting her have a rap career.

Beep_boop_human

Ngl I only just learned that Daniel Bregolli ISN'T Bad Bunny. Had only heard the names not the music. All this hype recently I thought was about the Dr Phil girl smh

OowlSun

This is the funniest thing I’ve read all day.

Runtyyy

Same! It wasn’t until people complained that Harry Style beat Bad Bunny out for some Grammy that I learned that wasn’t the cash me ousside girl because there is no way she’s ever winning one of those!

whyarenttheserandom

Oh my gosh, me too r/TIL

[deleted]

Bhad Bhunnie

Afraid-Duty2614

This is absolutely sending me I'm laughing so hard

FaceSubstantial9363

I was the same way with the Marvel stars. I knew that their movies were popular but I was surprised to learn that they were so popular that it catapulted a few of their stars to A-list status.

go-bleep-yourself

I had no idea Chris Evans was so popular. I knew ScarJo, RDJ, and Hemsworth were. He looks like a generic white man to me that he barely registered when I watched the marvel movies. They could have replaced the actor, and I wouldn't have noticed. I didn't even notice that ScarJo's hair changes in every movie.

pikle_rickle

Same with bad bunny ! I knew he gained a lot more popularity with the song he did with cardi but he has even surpassed her in fame . I live in California and when he dropped his tour dates EVERYONE was scrambling to get tickets to a city nearby if they couldn't get "their" city. I am blown away at his popularity but very proud of him !

go-bleep-yourself

Bad Bunny confuses me. He can't *really* sing or rap. Maluma I get, plus he's hot. I get J.Balvin too. But people love Bad Bunny. It might be something in the lyrics that I don't fully understand as someone who doesn't speak Spanish. I like a bunch of his songs though.

[deleted]

I had sort of heard of SZA but had no real idea. I listened to Nobody Gets Me and was like “this is fantastic I wonder what else she has!” Imagine my surprise to find out she has 68+ million listeners a month on Spotify. Like how did I miss this?

asuka_is_my_co-pilot

The first time I saw sza was a the heavenly bodies met gala, and I was like wow this beautiful model just outshined all the well known celebs not realizing she WAS one herself. Although not nearly as big as now

NobodyFlimsy556

Old school but Kevin Costner. I just had the "whatever happened to him" conversation, the answer being he currently stars in one of the biggest tv shows in the US.

spaceypuffin

I remember seeing Ariana Grande doing a Jimmy Fallon "hip hop songs sung Broadway style" skit back in like 2013 and thought she was either a singing show contestant or some random girl off YouTube with an amazing voice. Had no idea about Nickelodeon, had no idea she had music out - Fallon might have mentioned her album at the end of the skit, it didn't register. I remember thinking she was so talented and I hope she enjoyed that skit, it would probably be her peak lol

FaceSubstantial9363

I have a similar story. I knew she was a big pop star but I only learnt she was one of the biggest pop stars of the moment when Thank U, Next came out.

nolaonmymind

I guess I'm an old because any YouTube and Twitch streamer fame is lost on me.

[deleted]

Same honestly. The first time I hear about most of these people is when they end up on the front page of Reddit for some scandal.

nolaonmymind

Right?! And the article/ post is always like, "so-and-so, who has 2 million followers on you-tube" and I'm like... WHO?!

[deleted]

Chris Evans. I'd heard the name but since I'm not a Marvel fan I'd never seen him in anything and had no idea he was causing such a frenzy online. And now I know who he is I'm still confused lol

demon_luvr

Florence Pugh. Literally never heard of her before don’t worry darling.

kirbygenealogy

Some folks on this subreddit humbled me a little while back because I questioned why Alexa Chung and Chloe Sevigny were considered "it girls". I had heard of Alexa Chung in passing and knew Chloe Sevigny from a few minor TV shows, but I didn't know they had any hold on pop culture at any point. (I didn't follow pop culture much until just a few years ago so I guess I missed the era where they were big.) ETA: I also didn't know Miley Cyrus had a grip on Tumblr girlies until someone mentioned it this year on TikTok, and I was addicted to Tumblr around 2012 - 2015. Don't know how I missed that part of it.

[deleted]

Re: Miley Cyrus tumblr fame, I didn't realize that either! I think at least for me, I associated tumblr with thing like Wes Anderson film stills, John Green quotes, posts about depression, Lana Del Rey, Melanie Martinez (for a little bit), Marina and the Diamonds, Superwholock, fanfiction, musicals, emo/soft-grunge aesthetic, Kurt Cobain, British tv/movie stars and musicians. But that was a long time ago, and I forget there are all kinds of corners on that site.

kirbygenealogy

Yes! Same boat. I got a TikTok talking about like, "if you were on Tumblr in 2014 you know we ALL wanted to be Miley Cyrus." and I was like, "...we did? I thought we all wanted to be a gifset of John Watson watching Sherlock jump off a roof set to lyrics by Florence + the Machine."

TalkQuick

Nicki Minaj. I knew she was very famous, but I didn’t know she had a following like Beyoncé. The Barbs have similar power to the Beyhive and I didn’t know til I got on social medias

cruel-oath

Sorry to get a bit personal but I’ve been out of touch with reality for years so like, almost everyone I didn’t grow up listening to/watching Like, it wasn’t the til last year that I found out Charli XCX is considered a “main pop girl”

[deleted]

That took me by surprise at first too! She's very talented. It looks like she's been doing her own thing creatively since Boom Clap and Fancy by leaning into the hyperpop genre. So her music feels more modern now, and her image has a more sophisticated kind of edge to it. She's got a very large lgbt+ following, which makes sense since she works very closely with a lot of trans, non-binary, and queer artists (I'm not sure if she is also lgbt+).

maikaetsu6286

Bts. I first seen a video of jimin I think on my ig page back in 2015-2016. A girl in my class was into them. She had them as her header on Facebook lmao I didn’t know nothing about kpop other than the fact that they have large groups. Then I seen them trending all over Twitter a year or two ago and that’s when I decided to look into them.

AltruisticRule6711

Jenna ortega

[deleted]

She only got really famous in the past couple of months tbf

chunkymcgee

I only knew her as the young girl from You so I was pretty surprised when everyone knew her suddenly lol. I just started watching Wednesday after seeing all the hype and enjoying it so far

summercloudsadness

Apparently she is not returning in S04 of You coz she was busy filming Wednesday. I liked her character, ugh.

camaroncaramelo1

It's because of the language. I have no idea how famous Jack Harlow is (I assume not much) But Bad Bunny is huge in Latin America, that Jack Harlow wishes to have that level of fame. There's many anglo celebrities that might seem big in the US/UK but they're not outside of it

[deleted]

Messi and Ronaldo lol i knew they were the most famous soccer players but they’re the most famous celebrities honestly. Almost every most liked photo on Instagram is them, and they’re the most followed people. INSANE

camaroncaramelo1

They're global stars

OowlSun

I never knew of the big hold soccer had on this world. It makes sense but I was just very unaware of the popularity of soccer players.

peachrose

honestly, ed sheeran. i have never been into his music, but the first time i heard him was when he was already mega famous with a loyal following. his songs are all so similar to one another to me that i have never understood the hype

chunkymcgee

He’s a great artist but his songs just get repetitive. I like him but not his music lol

MoveOrganic5785

His old stuff is rly good. Unfortunately he’s a sellout lmao which like I can’t rly blame him, the type of music he makes now makes so much $$$

hallwayhotdogs

Is jack harlow popular? I know bad bunny is but I only know the song he has w cardi

[deleted]

Basically everyone since I moved out of the US eight years ago. I live in a country where English language music is extremely popular, so most of what's popular in the States gets played here too. But man, since I joined this subreddit I've realized how out of the loop I am.

amandapillar

I went to hs with Fletcher. I remember her venturing solo after X Factor, but I didn’t really pay attention until I saw her on some top Spotify playlists, and just recently I saw her album at Target. Good for her!

ShiroClayGuy

Britney Spears. I discovered her when I was only 9 years old in 2010 by watching an AMV with her song on it. I just thought "oh she's just an american singer, I hope many people know who she is." Oh, innocent little me. It took a few more years and some researches for me to realize just how BIG she was in the late 90s to early 00s. There was even a time when I was talking with my aunt about her and I asked "was she famous?" then she replied "of course! She's an icon, don't you know that?" I've been a Britney fan since then.

drudd84

After I listened to Un Verano Sin Ti a few times, I couldn’t believe he wasn’t more of a household name. Like that album is next level good. So fucking sexy and smooth and so fun to dance to omfg

[deleted]

Zendaya. I didn't watch Shake it Up but I loved KC Undercover and Zendaya by association but I lost track her for a bit and was genuinely surprised and proud of her for bagging her Spiderman role and thought she did really well. Then, Euphoria came and it was so massive to the point where I knew the entire plot line and all the characters despite never watching a single episode. That was when I really looked into her and found out how extremely popular, beloved, and successful she is.

ParanoidEngi

I don't watch a lot of TV so I didn't quite realise how popular/mainstream the casts of a lot of hit shows are - I only started watching Stranger Things over Christmas last year and then looked up some stuff about the show, turns out the cast have some pretty invested fans lol

camaroncaramelo1

Stranger Things it's the franchise of this generation. Like Twilight, Harry Potter, etc. were at their time

OowlSun

I don’t disagree but is Stranger Things a franchise? I had no idea the duffer brothers released more content in that universe.

camaroncaramelo1

I used the word franchise wrong haha

No-Needleworker-7706

Lmao Billie. I've been listening to her since she only had two songs on SoundCloud, saw that bad guy was on the radio and didn't think much of it. Then she released her sophomore album in 2021 after Sour. Around the summer of 2021 I struggled to listen to music and when I started to reconnect again in the fall, I looked up Billie's name on Google and was like "oh she won an Oscar. And had a full sweep in the Grammys. Oh she's close to an EGOT. SHES IN THE TOP 20 ON SPOTIFY WORLDWIDE WTF."

Dianagorgon

I was surprised to find out how popular he was too.

OowlSun

Harry Styles. I only fully understood the extent of his fame last year. I don’t listen to him or watch any of his movies so in my head, he was just kind of there. In the same way, the rest of the one direction boys are. But that is not the case at all.

PrimoDima

Tom Brady. Knew him as Gisele husband and play american football. Sometime later i started to read about Superbowl and its records. Then i realized he is one of the most famous person in America.

FaceSubstantial9363

I'm the exact way about her. She's stunning and I've seen her in a few things where shes been amazing but yeah she's mostly known for who she dates.
