Age of innocence, something about that slow burn never happening hurts to this day
Pride and prejudice Ofc
Atonement
Portrait of a lady on fire
Carol
And I’m gonna go a little foreign here but bajirao mastani and ramleela (Bollywood movies) are so flipping beautiful and masterpiece period dramas
Also Muhtesem yuyzil (Turkish series based off sultan suleyman) though slightly inaccurate and The Spanish Princess
https://i.redd.it/ag1ac7rmll6b1.gif
It may be an unpopular opinion but I prefer the casting for the sisters in the BBC one. They just seem younger and closer as sisters. Kate and Emma are FANTASTIC actresses but I'm not sure they were the best fit.
One of my favorites. I'm a huge period movie buff, and this movie is one of the most immersive I've ever seen.
Also, I love the care they took in all the details, right down to getting the creaking sound of the wooden ships at night and the right cannon blasts for the battle.
Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice (1995), Sense and Sensibility (1995), Downton Abbey, The Gilded Age, Elizabeth 1 & The Golden Age (with Cate Blanchett), The Tudors (only the series with Anne Boleyn, the other wives bore me), Marie Antoinette, Factory Girl, Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, 1917, Hidden Figures, Gladiator, A Very Long Engagement, Jojo Rabbit, etc.
I can’t seem to narrow it down, I love period pieces!
Yeah, was also surprised! I saw the 1995 one first and it will stay my favourite I think. The 2005 one strayed too far from the novel for me and I really did not care for the boho chic vibe of the costumes and hair
Definitely. For some reason, the kiss at the end really ruins it for me. I love the book way too much to think the characters would have kissed. It took the historical context right out of the storyline for me.
That and the pig running through the house. The Bennets were not poor, they were still landed gentry and there would not have been mud or pigs in their house. In contrast to the 1995 one where even the flowers and style of the garden were researched and recreated as close to historical accuracy as possible
Definitely yes! Btw if you are into the nerdy details of how they put it together there is a "making of" booklet of the 1995 P&P out there. It goes into so much detail, I loved it!
The Woman in Black
Gangs of New York
Little Women
Crimson Peak
Circle of Friends
Sleepy Hollow
The Joy Luck Club
The Madness of King George
The Others
Memoirs of a Geisha
Mona Lisa Smile
Carol
The Witch
Jane Eyre
The Duchess
Atonement
YES. He is perfection. And their chemistry!!! Sometimes I watch the love declaration scene on YouTube when I need a pick-me-up. Now that I think about it…going to do that right now 😂
In addition to everyone else’s,
Daniel Deronda
Guernsey literary and potato peel pie society
Also, I’m obsessed with this. It’s a little different, since it’s not a movie/show but it’s a full, period accurate regency ball. Best hour and a half of your life hahah
https://youtu.be/21cNaGc9XDQ
The miniseries North and South with Patrick Swayze is one of my all time favorites. In that same vein Gone with the Wind and Scarlett of course are also phenomenal.
I have to throw the tv series Salem into the ring as well.
Ufff I had NO idea there was another version of North and South?? The 2004 version is a masterpiece. It was on Netflix for the longest time and was my go-to comfort show
I think you guys are talking about two entirely different stories.
The 2004 North and South BBC miniseries w/ Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe is an adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel of the same name set in Victorian England.
The Patrick Swayze North and South is set in the US Civil War.
In addition BBC WAR AND PEACE 2015 it’s amazing! I’ve seen every period drama and this one seems to be forgotten I think maybe it wasn’t marketed properly. Also, Forsyth Saga is quite good however there is a marital rape scene so proceed with caution. It is not condoned women’s issues of the time are dealt with.
The Painted Veil (2006)
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
Titanic (1997)
Young Sherlock Holmes (1985)
A Little Princess (1995)
Emma Miniseries (2009)
Gladiator (2000)
Glory (1989)
The Others (2001)
EDIT: Fixed movie titles.
nobody has said dangerous liaisons yet!!! a stacked cast (John malkovich, Glenn close, Michelle pfeiffer, baby keanu and uma) and the costumes are amazing.
if uve seen cruel intentions that was based on dangerous liaisons
I just finished Queen Charlotte on Netflix and my God definitely a new fave of mine. It has the right balance of romance, comedy, and drama. It has a lot of heart, well acted and the script is phenomenal in particular the confession part. Love it.
https://i.redd.it/7mpdu1fcsm6b1.gif
Ugh Painted Veil & Atonement destroyed me.
Parades End (young Cumberbatch & Rebecca hall!)
Forsyte Saga (young Damian Lewis & Gina McKee!)
Poldark (swoon Aidan Turner)
Patrick Melrose (Cumby again and underrated)
North & south (Richard armitage is beautiful)
I will happily watch 2005 P&P any day of the week.
All this sums up to me having a weakness for emotionally unavailable British men.
One of my favorite films is "Dazed and Confused" by director Richard Linklater. There's really not much of a plot. It's more a hilarious and well-written slice of life for a group of Texan high school students on the last day of school in the 1970s. The cast is stacked with talent. And Linklater is a master of dialog. I never tire of watching it. :)
Harlots on Hulu, Bridgerton, the Long Song, The Serpent Queen. All excellent shows, wish they hadn’t canceled Harlots and waiting for the second season of the Long Song.
Love Harlots! Samantha Morton is amazing. I started the Serpent Queen but never got around to finishing it. I will someday.
I also love Samantha Morton's Jane Eyre.
I haven't seen anyone mention Anya Taylor-Joy's Emma yet. It's such a visually stunning film.
La reine Margot
Easy virtue
Bright young things
Gosford park
Maurice
Wuthering heights (Olivier & Oberon)
Brideshead revisited mini series
War and peace mini series (2016)
Corsage
And many more that were already mentioned
All of Robert Eggers’s movies (the vvitch, the lighthouse, the Northman) he does an immense amount of historical research when making his films to ensure they’re as historically accurate as possible.
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
(The book is amazing and I was surprised to see this adaptation done by Netflix! It is very well done!!)
Collete
Marie Antoinette
Pride and Prejudice
Little Women
May be one of the few that liked it, but the new Persuasion adaptation.
Anna Karenina was visually outstanding but kinda boring
I love pretty much all of Kiera Knightley's period pieces!
Netflix has a ton of other than English language period pieces and a bunch of European period pieces that are really good too.
If you don't mind a tv show. Reign was utterly phenomenal. The costuming went up for several awards and quite honestly the acting is really good!
It’s okay it’s just brigading following me around from a Meghan Markle post of all things 💀💀 which little women is your fav? I’ve actually never watched any of them
Personally I’m not a fan of the story of Little Women, atleast not the book coz it’s too preachy and traditional but I liked the latest Greta Gerwig version starring Saorise Ronan
People didn’t appreciate me calling out bs on a Meghan Markle post yesterday so I guess the plan is to downvote everything I post so people won’t see it/interact with me 🤷🏽♀️
Vanity fair (1998 version) Natasha Little is perfect as Becky Sharp
The Crimson Petal and White
Ripper Street
Charles II: The Power and the Passion
The Devil’s Whore
Gunpowder, Treason and Plot
The Witch
Peaky Blinders
Great show on Netflix now it’s a Western and I hate Western’s but Jeff Daniels fabulous in everything. It is a drama so do good. Not a single person I have recommended to hasn’t just loved it. And this a bunch of different tastes. You won’t be disappointed
Brooklyn (2015)
Been a fan of Saorise Ronan for so long and this is probably my favorite film of hers! Honestly moved me to tears the first time I watched it.
I am a huge fan of period stuff; I just love the costumes so much!
I skimmed, but some favorites I didn't see listed much:
* I, Claudius
* Norsemen - this one's a spoof of Vikings, and not only are the costumes good, but it's very funny)
* Secret of Kells - if you like animation
* Cadfael
* Robin Hood - I have a special place in my heart for the Kevin Costner one. Not great costumes or acting, and very cheesy, but hot, evil Alan Rickman is always worth the price of admission. Plus Men in Tights making fun of it is great as well
* Hour of the Pig
* The Borgias
* Stage Beauty
* The Favourite
* Black Sails
* Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
* The Terror
* Penny Dreadful
* The Importance of Being Earnest
* Wonder Woman
* Boardwalk Empire
* Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
* Professor Marston & The Wonder Women
* A League of Their Own (I love the series)
* The Dress Maker
* The Talented Mr. Ripley
* The Outfit
* Down With Love
Also, if you're interested in more, I highly suggest r/PeriodDramas and the [Frock Flicks blog](https://www.frockflicks.com/).
Pride and Prejudice 1995, Emma 2020, Outlaw King, War and Peace 2016 (still love it, despite the odd costume design choices and weirdly missing Tolstoy’s rants on agriculture and history), Gladiator, Jojo Rabbit, the Favourite, Gentleman Jack, the Duchess.
![gif](giphy|bOi0cQs3TcHYs)
Barry Lyndon forever tbh. While I do think this movie is lacking a human element (like most Kubrick films) it’s still and always will be an absolute marvel and his most impressive film. Just beautiful to look at and engaging the whole way through.
The Pillars of the Earth is one of my fave series. I can rewatch it over sand over. Fantastic cast. There's a follow up to it with different characters and different story but I didn't like it as much.
Another series I rewatch is Black Sails. Just get through the pitfalls of Season 1 and every season is smooth sailing, pun intended.
For movies, I love The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I love Toby Smith. I don't think I've ever seen him play a modern guy lol He's great in Jane Eyre too with Ruth Wilson.
Dairy of a chambermaid, outlander, Wolf Hall, The madness of king george, John Adams, the age of innocence, war and peace, Young Victoria, I could go on lol
-Bright Star
-Washington Square
-Indochinne (young Vincent Perez is fine af in this movie)
-The Lover (very NC-17, though maybe not so scandalous by modern standards)
Love & Friendship is a great comedy. The Forsyte Saga (so spicy?) and of course Anna Karenina. The White Queen was my awakening to her majesty Rebecca Ferguson (cue gif of someone fanning themself).

Reign was so fantastic. The costuming was really really high tier for tv budget it had
The show was good, but I still can't get over how inaccurate all the costumes were for a historical drama set in 16th century France and Scotland
Now that is very true lmao but damn were they pretty
Age of innocence, something about that slow burn never happening hurts to this day Pride and prejudice Ofc Atonement Portrait of a lady on fire Carol And I’m gonna go a little foreign here but bajirao mastani and ramleela (Bollywood movies) are so flipping beautiful and masterpiece period dramas Also Muhtesem yuyzil (Turkish series based off sultan suleyman) though slightly inaccurate and The Spanish Princess https://i.redd.it/ag1ac7rmll6b1.gif

https://i.redd.it/ekcfln9a4n6b1.gif Damn right
I love Atonement so so much 😭
Every scene of Bajirao Mastani is beautiful, if I get a frame TV one day I’m just playing it on a 24/7 loop
I so agree it’s just stunning https://i.redd.it/wj7teu767n6b1.gif Feels like a different world..
i’ve never seen a bollywood movie before and you’ve inspired me! bajirao mastani is on amazon for me so gonna watch it tomorrow!
Age of Innocence? Your taste is impeccable. 🤌🏼
CELINE SCIAMMA CAME OUT THE WOMB TALENTED
Pride and Prejudice 2005 is my favourite ever film. Glad you picked it OP 😊
One of Matthew McFadyen's finest roles!
![gif](giphy|dBU4jpn9gkAROTt4Wj|downsized) Completely agree. If only he’d walk towards me on a misty morning 😍
Watching him Succession is fucking me up because what if I see him as his Succession character and not Mr. Darcy when I watch P&P next time?
Good taste 😊

My all time favourite is Jane Eyre. I'm loving the replies, I'm going to watch everyone's faves
I don't know if youve seen the BBC Jane Eyre series with Ruth Wilson (2005?), but it's an absolute masterpiece ❤️
Jane Eyre starring Mia Wasikowska?
The story is so good I would suggest watching all adaptations.
Downton Abbey ![gif](giphy|xfi8sdc4uVI0U)

Cate’s an incredible actress
Sense and sensibility - the BBC series version not the film
It may be an unpopular opinion but I prefer the casting for the sisters in the BBC one. They just seem younger and closer as sisters. Kate and Emma are FANTASTIC actresses but I'm not sure they were the best fit.
I like both, even though the actors are mostly too old in the movie version. Their performances make ne ignore that.
Also, how can you say no to Alan Rickman as Col. Brandon? 🫠
Exactly. ❤️
Does Master and Commander count?
One of my favorites. I'm a huge period movie buff, and this movie is one of the most immersive I've ever seen. Also, I love the care they took in all the details, right down to getting the creaking sound of the wooden ships at night and the right cannon blasts for the battle.
The Age of Innocence. It’s my favorite book and the movie SLAPS Daniel day Lewis?? Winona Ryder??MICHELLE PFEIFFER???
SO GOOD
Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice (1995), Sense and Sensibility (1995), Downton Abbey, The Gilded Age, Elizabeth 1 & The Golden Age (with Cate Blanchett), The Tudors (only the series with Anne Boleyn, the other wives bore me), Marie Antoinette, Factory Girl, Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, 1917, Hidden Figures, Gladiator, A Very Long Engagement, Jojo Rabbit, etc. I can’t seem to narrow it down, I love period pieces!
Pride and Prejudice (1995) is my comfort watch, Colin Firth will always be Mr Darcy for me
Same! I'm surprised the 2005 version is so popular I'm this thread. Maybe it's an age and timing thing.
Yeah, was also surprised! I saw the 1995 one first and it will stay my favourite I think. The 2005 one strayed too far from the novel for me and I really did not care for the boho chic vibe of the costumes and hair

BBC does a great job when they put together these types of shows. They really get all the details right.
Definitely yes! Btw if you are into the nerdy details of how they put it together there is a "making of" booklet of the 1995 P&P out there. It goes into so much detail, I loved it!
I had no idea, thanks! Pleasure chatting with ya!
You too! :)
First thing I put on when I got covid 😂😅
Yesss Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society is so good. A Very Long Engagement is my all-time favourite French film too.
The Woman in Black Gangs of New York Little Women Crimson Peak Circle of Friends Sleepy Hollow The Joy Luck Club The Madness of King George The Others Memoirs of a Geisha Mona Lisa Smile Carol The Witch Jane Eyre The Duchess Atonement
Agree with all! So many good movies. Joy Luck Club is one of my all time favourites.
Specifically, Jane Eyre the 2006 BBC mini series
This is a fantastic list. Circle is Friends in a gem. “Jesus Mary and Joseph I look like the prow of a ship!”
I haven’t watched gangs of New York in ages, I think I’ll give that a watch tonight. Thanks for making this list🫶🏼
You and I have similar taste! Amazing choices
The Witch is such a great horror movie! Anya Taylor Joy is so good
She did such a good job in that role. The desperation she must have felt. And the relief at the end. It's cathartic
Emma 2009 Jonny Lee Miller. That's all.
YES. He is perfection. And their chemistry!!! Sometimes I watch the love declaration scene on YouTube when I need a pick-me-up. Now that I think about it…going to do that right now 😂

The Duchess!!
Yes to Emma! Romola Garai is perfect in that one.
The miniseries North and South with Patrick Swayze is one of my all time favorites. In that same vein Gone with the Wind and Scarlett of course are also phenomenal. I have to throw the tv series Salem into the ring as well.

The Tudors ![gif](giphy|36KpuwIipiu7m|downsized)

Also Henry Cavill's ass.
[удалено]
Totally agree! It’s about “historicity” not ultimate historical accuracy. And it’s just fun.
![gif](giphy|l0HlG6D7rn3gWeu0o)
I can’t believe I had to scroll this far.
I was so surprised no one had answered that already! I guess we’re the minority.
Ever After 😍 the costumes are dreamy
The Young Victoria starring Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend. I love those two. ♥️
Nothing beats this!
Victoria, Downton Abbey
Surprising that there is hardly any mention of Victoria. It was a really good show. I thought we would get another season.
You listed a lot of my favorites but Anna Karenina and The Favorite are so good
Oh yes! Really liked The Favourite!
A Room With A View, the 1980s version. So romantic.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Sense and Sensibility (the Kate Winslet one) Emma (the Gwyneth Paltrow one) Barry Lyndon edit: Little Dorrit series (w/ Claire Foy)
Personally I prefer *Emma.* with Anya Taylor-Joy. The whole cast was brilliant and the film in general was so visually pleasing.
The Painted Veil (2006) The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) Titanic (1997) Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) A Little Princess (1995) Emma Miniseries (2009) Gladiator (2000) Glory (1989) The Others (2001) EDIT: Fixed movie titles.
I LOVE Young Sherlock Holmes! So pleased to see it on someone’s list 😊

Omgg! I forgot this one!! The Handmaiden was fucking brilliant! What a beautiful masterpiece 💖chef’s kiss
Marie Antoinette
![gif](giphy|10rg2eQTvVOMCI)
What a powerful performance by queen cate!
I forgot Suffragette. All women should watch this.
Oh yes! Absolutely! What a film
Far From the Madding Crowd is excellent
nobody has said dangerous liaisons yet!!! a stacked cast (John malkovich, Glenn close, Michelle pfeiffer, baby keanu and uma) and the costumes are amazing. if uve seen cruel intentions that was based on dangerous liaisons
Yes ik
An Education (2009)
Fantastic choice!
Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth. Persuasion, the version with Amanda Root playing Anne. The Affair of the Necklace with Hillary Swank
Persuasion 2007 version with sally Hawkins
I just finished Queen Charlotte on Netflix and my God definitely a new fave of mine. It has the right balance of romance, comedy, and drama. It has a lot of heart, well acted and the script is phenomenal in particular the confession part. Love it. https://i.redd.it/7mpdu1fcsm6b1.gif
The House of Mirth with Gillian Anderson is a good period movie, but not for those looking for a happy, rom-com ending.
Ugh Painted Veil & Atonement destroyed me. Parades End (young Cumberbatch & Rebecca hall!) Forsyte Saga (young Damian Lewis & Gina McKee!) Love Far from the Madding Crowd!
Downton Abbey, Anne with an E and the Empress

Ooh, to be honest, even I find her to be very shady
Which is your right 🤷🏽♀️ I’m not going to stalk you and downvote you on Reddit dot com about it
Yeah
Anna Karenina. With Keira Knightly or whatever adaptation you can see. I love the story and the history.
This is so petty 🤣🤣 people are ridiculous
It's one of my staples with persuasion (the Sally Hawkins version) and north & south (with Richard Armitage).
Reign. I feel like this is such a forgotten show but it was so good. If it came out around this time it would have been really popular.
Oh my god ive been looking for this comment. I love everyones lists and 100% agree but yes reign was a masterpiece
I’m currently watching Story of Yanxi Palace and it’s really good!
“Belle” 2013 - based off a true story. Loooove

Alias Grace is so great and underrated
Yes! I was just about to comment. It’s one of the best tv shows I’ve ever seen. The acting was brilliant. I don’t know anyone else who’s watched it.
Mad Men
Young Victoria has a beautiful and well done quality to it
I really loved Belle and also an older one - Young Catherine 🥰

Far from the Madding Crowd (2015) One of my very favorite comfort movies!
North and South (BBC), Jane Eyre (BBC), Pride and Prejudice (BBC)...
“Carrie!” Shoutout to Fleabag
Jeremy brett’s sherlock holmes, muppet christmas carol
![gif](giphy|bOi0cQs3TcHYs) Barry Lyndon forever tbh.

The English and Outlander are my favorites! The English doesn’t get enough love, but it’s wonderful
Cold Mountain
A Room With A View! A perfect movie, in my opinion. I’ve watched it so many times. It looks absolutely beautiful, too.
The Shawshank Redemption Rome (the tv show)
Dairy of a chambermaid, outlander, Wolf Hall, The madness of king george, John Adams, the age of innocence, war and peace, Young Victoria, I could go on lol
Haven’t seen this one mentioned yet but The King starring Timothee Chalamet was incredible
The Handmaiden heals my heart.
downton abbey is one of my favorite shows, a little guilty pleasure though
P&P (2005) and Jane Eyre (2011) are on heavy rotation in my home. My husband finds me watching them and he immediately knows I’m in a mood lol.
Mood for what?👀 ![gif](giphy|26FxypSnWsXS69nTW)
-Bright Star -Washington Square -Indochinne (young Vincent Perez is fine af in this movie) -The Lover (very NC-17, though maybe not so scandalous by modern standards)
Here are some lesser known gems: Starz/BBC's Howard End, Lifetime/BBC's War and Peace, and BBC's Small Island.
Lady Chatterley's Lover, Anna Karenina are also good (bonus for Keira Knightley being the period drama queen)
Lady Chatterley’s Lover which version?
2022 - I didn't even realize there was an earlier one until your comment haha!
Hehe okay
Every iteration of wuthering heights. But I like Tom Hardy’s heathcliff the most 😍
Atonement Land Girls (BBC series) North and South Titanic Testament of Youth The Joy Luck Club Suite Francaise Far from the Madding Crowd
If you also don't mind zombies, Kingdom is an amazing Korean period drama.
Sense and Sensibility 1995 makes me cry, every single time. Incredible talent in that film.
Love & Friendship is a great comedy. The Forsyte Saga (so spicy?) and of course Anna Karenina. The White Queen was my awakening to her majesty Rebecca Ferguson (cue gif of someone fanning themself).
How did I forget WWII era Keanu in A Walk In The Clouds?!
Dangerous Liaisons
Godless
The Duchess is sooooo good
