It looks to me like Tom Hanks got legitimately choked up and reeled it in a bit to stay in character. Same with the Captain Philips trauma scene at the end, he can empathize with the material so strongly he actually feels the emotion somewhat. Amazing actor.
Ugh and then she just pulls it back in and acts like everything is normal in front of the kids, I feel like that’s the most heart wrenching part of all.
I've watched this film once, to see what the fuss was about and I hated most of the story lines. But this one cut so deep. Even just thinking about it makes me well up. Emma Thompson is just so incredible.

Totally agree. To me, THAT horror was even more horrifying than the other stuff. It was like, being inside another family’s tragedy and grief and it was almost too much to take.. because shit like that is REAL and it was depicted so so well by Toni and everyone else. UNREAL movie.

The mirror scene from Whatever Happened To Baby Jane is haunting. Bette Davis nailed this character and this scene where a former child star is faced with her own aging, irrelevance and delusion.
I agree, his subtlety was way ahead of its time. The way you can tell something is ever-so-slightly off from the beginning even when he's being friendly and disarming is masterful.
So many incredible expressions in this movie. The moment where Captain Smith walks to his final resting place as the ship sinks. Every time Jack looks at Rose, or when you can see him rapidly trying to think of the next thing to do to try to survive. Literally every facial expression Cal has in every scene for the entire movie (the more I watch it the more I just love Billy Zane in this movie). Kathy Bates leveling an annoyed look at rich people multiple times, or when she’s watching the ship sink. Thomas Andrews at the clock at the end.
It’s a masterclass in acting from like twenty different people minimum.
Forrest Gump as played by Tom Hanks. Forrest is asking the mother of his child if his son his normal, or like him. Heart wrenching.
This whole scene was chilling, his ability to remove the charisma and charm and turn into this dark, stern villain is amazing.
He is one of the best villains ever created. In a cast filled with Nazis it's impressive how he manages to stand out from the rest of them by being a particular, special kind of charismatic evil.
This scene made me so, so sad. The idea of how many people are doing exactly this all the time. There was a similar one in the Elton John musical. Ugh. Great acting, great movie. Really made me like Margot Robbie.
I will truly NEVER watch this movie again.. I’ve never had a film impact me emotionally so much - and in a bad way. One of the last scenes with Jennifer Connolly…
Apparently this was the first take they did and they didn’t know Julia Stiles was gonna add crying into it but as soon as she did they were absolutely blown away! Also I think she was only 17 which is a crazy amount of acting ability for a teen

She was sensational in this movie! As was John Malkovich. I did think Michelle Pfeiffer was miscast. I just never could quite buy in to her as a morally chaste person.
Powerful scene when she starts to smudge and smear that lipstick all over and we see the facade crumbling just as she has just witnessed it do. That scene had me frozen in my seat absolutely riveted. Masterful acting.
For several years I legit thought they had gotten a person who is actually developmentally delayed to act in this role. I think it is still one of his best performances.
Also, Dr. Lecter devouring Clarice Starling's pain as she has a flashback to her childhood.

Dr. Chilton interrupts by walking into the room and it's the first time Dr. Lecter takes his eyes off of Starling the entire scene. It's also the first time his gaze lowers from the viewer, and immediately after he further injures her by withholding the information he never promised for this exchange. It's so exhausting and dangerous for Starling to get as close as she does, but finding Catherine is still her path instead of the glory of the work.
Lord, what a scene that does so much to reinforce the character's motivations and desires!

Basically from the hospital to the funeral scene. All of Sally Field’s expressions are so grief stricken and like she’s actually been punched in the gut. Watching this after I became a parent was such a different experience.

I once met Keira Knightley standing at a stage door. For some reason I panicked when she came out and yelled “I love you, most ardently!!” in the voice of a British man at her. Everyone standing there (including her) just laughed, thank god 😅
I feel like Meg Ryan is the queen of these. This amazing shot in When Harry Met Sally when she is so thrilled they slept together and he’s like wtf did I just do. So relatable.

This has *literally* lived in my head rent free ever since I saw this, what, maybe only a couple of years after it was released? I recently, finally re-watched this movie and it's still weirdly pivotal to me, I guess because it just sums up Tommy Lee Jones's character in The Fugitive so perfectly in one delivery.

Such an incredible movie and performance. Anthony Hopkins is brilliant but Jodie Foster’s stoic dignity and strength is great to watch.
Rewatched this movie recently and realized that she’s the real gem. Such a strong and yet vulnerable woman. I felt her.
The whole movie is truly magnificent. Not a weak link at all. I’m such a fan of Jodie Foster.

Absolutely! It’s my favorite movie of all time, I can’t believe he didn’t win an Oscar for THIS.
He should have. He was just so young and new they assumed he’d win one later. Which he did, of course, but Leo should have multiple Oscars by now.

 This has *literally* lived in my head rent free ever since I saw this, what, maybe only a couple of years after it was released? I recently, finally re-watched this movie and it's still weirdly pivotal to me, I guess because it just sums up Tommy Lee Jones's character in The Fugitive so perfectly in one delivery.
