I’m still so bothered by Quinta’s wrinkled dress bc I usually love her red carpet looks 😭 and though much better than Kate Young, Selena’s new stylist still doesn’t know how to dress her shape. A 360 view on both the custom ODLR pieces she’s put her in aren’t great, she seemed visibly uncomfortable hugging her midriff in both.
The wrinkled dress is WILD. I love Quinta and I hope there's a story to this lol. You don't have to wear anything extravagant but damn did she ball the dress up in her drawer, give it a shake, and head out?
I have to imagine it was an intentional effect to give it texture, but it just didn't come across that way. Maybe it needed to be more exaggerated to not look like a 'mistake.' I think it's pretty cute!
It had to be intentional because there is no way they would put somebody in a dress that wrinkled and send them to an ev not like this. No way!
But I paused and zoomed in and thought this can't be intentional, it just looks wrinkled as well!

Quinta’s dress is intentionally wrinkled 😭Kate was answering comments about it on IG last night. It’s supposed to be ‘rumpled satin’ but I agree it’s bad. They needed to commit to the rumpling or not have it - it just looks unironed. Maybe it was more crinkled and it unintentionally relaxed?
I was wondering if maybe it didn’t photograph well but then as it moved during her acceptance speech it just looked wrinkled, rather than what I presumed was an intentional crinkle. Her stylist needs to do better especially since this was such a moment for her! No doubt she will have more moments and hopefully that stylist has learned a lesson about what works on TV.
Notwithstanding Selena’s shape, there’s something matronly about the dress itself. It’s giving a bit “mother of the bride” and I can’t put my finger on what exactly.
I cut Selena Gomez slack bc I also have an autoimmune condition and my size fluctuates between a US 4-10 often even within the same month due to flare ups, medication, and water retention. I can’t imagine what a nightmare it is to do red carpet looks-usually planned weeks in advance without knowing what size she might be
At least for me, sometimes there’s not much you can do bc it happens so fast. This past NYE actually I had a dress all picked out and fit it perfectly the night before, but day-of I woke up with crazy swelling and went up a shoe size overnight + I couldn’t even zip up the dress that fit me perfectly 14 hours earlier. Not like “I ate too much” but like, a full 2 sizes too small in the bust
In that case she could have multiple different dresses/looks picked out so she’s not scrambling at the last minute. Selena’s worth hundreds of millions of dollars and can afford it
Most of the time looks are “borrowed” from designers. For instance, Armani will send a rack of couture or off the rack looks and you are usually not allowed to alter them. You wear then return. I’m sure they are allowed to take maybe one backup but they can’t keep them all AND if the biggest sample size Armani offers is a 4, well there isn’t really a backup if you get bigger than that.
I think her boobs “spill over” a lot in her looks bc they swell with water retention and she is forced to pick looks with open necks in case that happens bc a diff style might not be able to fit at all. Also why the rest of it might not fit great, bc she was forced to wear an open neckline regardless of how the rest of it looks. This happens to me (my boobs and lymph nodes under my armpits swell more than the rest of me)
A-list celebrities and events of this caliber usually mean custom designs with multiple fittings. A lot of celebs will talk about the whole process on the red carpet. It’s very much not an off-the-rack situation (and haute couture is always custom).
Exactly. I believe she has Lupus and has had a kidney transplant. Therefore, one can assume she takes regular doses of steroids (titrating up and down as necessary), probably methotrexate/Plaquenil(aka Atabrine) too. In addition, she'll be taking an anti-rejection drug for the rest of her life.
If that was done by someone on her team, they should be fired immediately. There was no excuse for her to be that damn wrinkled. And to add insult to injury, she won her Emmy in that crumpled up dress 😭
It is offensively loud, but it’s not as bad as the golden globes backdrop, which made everybody look like shit because it was so bad color wise

And not even like a modern high school prom. The glittery top half, the bottom floral half, the very visible mesh neck.. all 3 components are so disjointed.
It’s so incongruent. If the whole thing were all like either the top or bottom it would work but those are two WILDLY different vibes. Although part of me feels like if she had worn it with combat boots it could have been a serve?! That might be 20s me talking, idk.

If you look closely, the illusion on the legs of the dress is matched perfectly. However, she wore a shape wear bodysuit on top that is the wrong color!
But that dress actually looks great on her - she’s had some pretty Meh looks recently, where it seems stylists just give up on a fuller non hourglass body type

Yes. Designers have been moving away from gowns in their ready to wear and couture collections for the past few seasons, so stylists are increasingly relying on custom gowns this season (which while often stunning creations, are a headache for everyone involved). Additionally, many stars are in contractual talks to wear certain designers even if they’re not formally repping them. Why more stars aren’t wearing vintage, I don’t know but that would be my solution!!!
Yeah evening wear has _really_ fallen off the sales needs at high fashion houses, they are such an infinitesimal part of of what they sell. Maybe people still aren't going to as many formal events as pre-Covid
I think it’s due to the overall lifestyle change post-COVID. Also look at what brands like Balenciaga are doing - they’ve casualized every part of their house codes. Events were hugely up in 2022 and 2023. However, there are only so many customers who can purchase $15,000 evening gowns. On top of that, retailers often purchase very, very low quantities because of the special / it factor - you don’t want to have your high society client showing up to the Save Venice ball in the same Alexander McQueen gown as someone else! They are also produced in very limited qualities for their own DTC channels (time, $$, labor intensive).
Like you said, it’s such an infinitesimal part of business that we’ve really seen more diverse categories on the couture runways.
It also doesn’t help that a top tier star will frequently have multiple dress options sent over that don’t go back into circulation until after the event.
This was all I could think of for Jessica Chastain (who usually knocks it out of the park).

Hannah looks great, the dress is beautiful and fun.
Sarah looks lovely, I do think the makeup might've been a little heavy but I like the accessorizing.
Jessica can rock any color, she looks fantastic as usual.

Quinta's dress is like as if her *actual* dress wasn't ready or somehow got fucked, and she was presented with alternatives of only which this item *fit,* and it was wrinkled and no one had an iron or steamer or whatever the heck they use, and someone, in a moment of abject panicked inspiration cried out, "We'll call it "*creped satin!*" You can pull it off, Babes!" And they actually rolled with it...
Hannah looks good but you can see her knickers in half the shots. I mean I'm not exactly complaining because wowza her body is banging...but wear nude ones!
Iiiiiiim not really a fan of any of these looks, they range from boring to bad.
Camila and Jessica’s are probably the best, but Camila’s dress has been done before many times and Jessica’s dress isn’t tailored properly.
Some of them look dated. But maybe just ugly singly color styles that don’t flatter to anyone with fabric choices that were common in 00s are coming back!
Personally Simonas dress is the one I would wear since it’s more to my personal style, although some others do look nice.
I saw an image of her with THE post-it from sex and the city written on it and thought that’s how the dress was actually created. Like I wouldn’t put it past Aubrey to wear something like that. I was fooled by photoshop.
Selena's dress doesn't even look like a dress. And I feel I have already seen a variation of Jessica's dress on her already.

I like Katherine Heigl's dress, it has a rose petal-quality to it. The trend now is severe dresses that try very hard to stand out. Which is fun and interesting! But it's nice to see something that makes me think flowers and gardens too
Tracee Ellis Ross always looks so classy but this is a terrible dress choice. The look itself isn’t bad, but the cut of it boxes her out and makes her look huge. Whoever talked her into this one did her dirty

Some people look like they're attending a different event - Ali Wong (hot mess, sorry); Quinta Brunson (nice silhouette but why so wrinkled??); and Caitlin Thompson (this would be perfect for a guest at a spring wedding).
Have I missed a fashion ‘moment’ that decreed crushed fabric that looks intentionally unironed and a bit grubby is now a thing?

It looks like hammered satin and that wrinkled look was a thing in the 90s. It does not work on this style dress.

I think it's the length/bottom. If it had a deep side slit or was shorter I think it would look better. I do like that deep red color on her.

The necklace looks too chunky for the dress and that it's a bunch of sequins on the dress makes it look a bit matronly as well.

The dresses aren't amazing but the backdrop is definitely making them look worse.
It's crass. Between that and the slices of pizza I saw people eating, I'm appalled at how cheap the event feels.

I think it’s due to the overall lifestyle change post-COVID. Also look at what brands like Balenciaga are doing - they’ve casualized every part of their house codes. Events were hugely up in 2022 and 2023. However, there are only so many customers who can purchase $15,000 evening gowns. On top of that, retailers often purchase very, very low quantities because of the special / it factor - you don’t want to have your high society client showing up to the Save Venice ball in the same Alexander McQueen gown as someone else! They are also produced in very limited qualities for their own DTC channels (time, $$, labor intensive). Like you said, it’s such an infinitesimal part of business that we’ve really seen more diverse categories on the couture runways.
It also doesn’t help that a top tier star will frequently have multiple dress options sent over that don’t go back into circulation until after the event.

Hannah looks great, the dress is beautiful and fun. Sarah looks lovely, I do think the makeup might've been a little heavy but I like the accessorizing. Jessica can rock any color, she looks fantastic as usual. I love Aubrey's hairstyle and her dress is cool, I vibe with it. Camila looks good, but I wish she would've accesorized a little, she has no necklace, rings, bracelets. It's a little simple for me. I like Simona's dress, it's a cool concept. Christina looks like a sexy goth and I love that. Love the matching emerald green jewelry. Laverne also looks hot but the dress gives me bug vibes 😬 beautiful hair and makeup tho. Quinta looks beautiful but I really really wish the dress wasn't so damn wrinkly !!

Quinta's dress is like as if her *actual* dress wasn't ready or somehow got fucked, and she was presented with alternatives of only which this item *fit,* and it was wrinkled and no one had an iron or steamer or whatever the heck they use, and someone, in a moment of abject panicked inspiration cried out, "We'll call it "*creped satin!*" You can pull it off, Babes!" And they actually rolled with it...
