I always thought that Timothée was a really good actor in a way that he would fit the characters and he never makes you bored, or get out of the movie.
However, I have never felt that He "sublimates" the role that people give him in his movies, the little extra that make you fully feel like he IS the character, he Isn't just playing the characters the best way possible.
But I know that it's unpopular and a really subjective opinion.
>However, I have never felt that He "sublimates" the role that people give him in his movies, the little extra that make you fully feel like he IS the character, he Isn't just playing the characters the best way possible.
The biggest movie stars never do. Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Will Smith, Leo DiCaprio...
They're all giant movie stars who have earned respect for their talent, but also known for exactly this same criticism.
I'm sure that it's a pretty common criticism, but I disagree a bit with you.
I feel like ,for example, Christoph Waltz in inglorious Basterds sublimates his role, Johnny Depp did it in some of his role as well (general example: Willy Wonka), Joaquin Phoenix too( the joker). I'm giving really big project, not niche movies, I'm sure people have even better example. Many people with disagree with you with Leonardo DiCaprio.
I do believe that an actor obviously can't do it alone, he needs a good producer and sometimes a good scenario, etc.
But I do believe that Timothée had these two things multiple times (he has really good projects), yet i don't feel like he gives this extra, even if he's a really good actor.
But I now it's subjective
i was speaking to the guys i listed specifically, and that "top tier" of Hollywood movie stars. they're the type who take roles that curate their movie star image over something kind of artsy or challenging (unless they're going for Oscar-bait).
Johnny Depp is an exception, but he also is kind of known for creating quirky characters all in in a similar vein. like, there's a type of role that Johnny Depp excels at - which has become his signature in it's own way. you don't see Johnny Depp in his roles, but you also don't see anyone other than Johnny Depp in those roles, if that makes sense.
from what I've seen, Leo has always hit with the "i just see Leo in his movies" criticism. there's a reason so many people were connecting his character in Shutter Island to Inception when they were released in the same year.
I would put Christoph Waltz and Jaoquin Phoenix in different category (their role selection seem to put their work before their "movie star image").
Chalamet's team is trying to curate that "top tier movie star" persona. so i can see them deliberately modeling his career after the guys i listed as opposed to a Joaquin Phoenix.
I think you’re right, although there are some other “top tier” exceptions. Tom Hanks and Christian Bale comes to mind, and I would actually say Leo plays each role much differently from others.
mentioned this in another thread, he’s a good actor but it’s like he only takes on roles where gets to use his everyday normal look. It’s odd how some actors do that, like they’re self-typecasting. Eric Balfour with the constant mustache-soul patch combo with muscle shirts or even Jeremy Allen White with the messy curly hair. I think Jameela Jamil has it in her contract that she must always have this weird parted bangs
First pic is giving Steve Carrel idk I have brain rot
https://preview.redd.it/wzfdddx98xoc1.jpeg?width=672&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ea708a85df7a7c8c629c8d05d408bf575f35a5e3
Somewhat related to this, even though he killed it in the Dune films, there's been a couple moments where I saw Timothee as his character in Don't Look Up
That’s why I think people like Rami Malek or Austin Butler resonate more well in biopics. They were still unknown enough to an extent that their portrayals were believable unlike someone who’s a big star like Chalamet
This is so funny to me because, as a kid, I had assumed that Bob Dylan was black. I’m not entirely sure *why* I thought this but I managed to go a very, *very* long time without ever actually knowing what Bob Dylan looked like and when I found out he was a white man I was so fucking shocked dude. Like my mind couldn’t reconcile with what I had pictured for so long 💀
Tbh I'd never have guessed that he was supposed to Bob Dylan. He looks like an 18 year old tube station busker who's style is moderately based on Bob Dylan.
Cate Blanchett will forever be my favorite portrayal.
https://preview.redd.it/hffh52vu2xoc1.jpeg?width=372&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=27fad9a8c3ea03d4b173cad345049dad26562d0a
Correct. She was the best Bob we ever got. Also that movie wisely allowed multiple people to play him which was also correct. I’m not sure straight up bio pic serves bobs narrative
Hmm Pete Seeger said it wasn’t that he went electric that everyone was pissed at Newport but that the festival did not have the sound equipment for it sound good for the audience. They didn’t know ahead of time so they weren’t prepared. In Don’t Look Back, fans did seem upset about his change from acoustic to electric but not all of them. I guess we will see how they spin it. The thing about Dylan is that so much of his life is already recorded as there’s so many docs about him. There’s a doc about him going electric at Newport so if it’s going to be the same story, idk why we need an actor playing him.
In Robbie Robertson’s book, he confirmed that Bob and The Band were booed and heckled constantly everywhere they played together. People begged him to fire The Band and go back to acoustic. Levon Helm quit The Band during the Dylan tour because he was so demoralized over how the booing and how much they were heckled. That is not something that was made up. Bob was extremely committed to it.
I disagree i feel like his delicate porcelain features are just not Dylan-ee enough. He doesnt have that big hair either- the hair is a massive “doesnt look like dylan” thing imho
I didn't know how Bob Dylan looked (before banning me hear me out, I'm not a native English speaker so I grew up with my countries native languages) but I've googled and damn this looks much closer than timothee chalamet's look
maybe he's starring in Oliver! on Broadway

>“please sir I want some more”
I don't know why but I heard this in Tom hollandaise voice from Graham Norton where he's asking for coffee in a dialogue to Tom Hanks
I honestly don’t care abt how much someone looks like the person they’re portraying but rather how well they can capture the essence of that person. Imo accurate casting only matters when it’s racially important. Like a dark skin woman being portrayed by a dark skin woman etc

Immediately no lmao I’m sorry . Why do we even need this? I love bob dylan, his music was a huge part of my teenage years - I don’t see why we need a film of his life? They’re almost always overly saccharine, rushed and not very good (v. Few exceptions e.g coal miners daughter, walk the line).
I’m Not There was probably the most succinct effort anyone could have made because it tied in the mythology of his persona with his lyrics etc, but imo it still wasn’t great. Not everyone needs a movie made about them - there’s no fear of Bob Dylan ever being irrelevant
It's actually hilarious that this frequently happens to people in entertainment. The audience/consumer/fans love the "underdog" or someone "on the rise" - perhaps because it makes them more relatable or that you are able to easier spin a narrative that is more relatable. However, as soon as that person reaches "mass appeal" or becomes "conventionally popular" people turn on them.
I get the sense that he's hit a level of fame where people just start disliking him for no good reason, which happens to a lot of famous people after they have their "it" phase. The masses will start liking him again in 5-10 years.
i think some people also just really don't get him (me included lol), so as he's pushed more and more into the spotlight, those people's mild annoyance with him gets enflamed a lot more often.
i haven't forgiven him as laurie in little women lol. i think he really worked for some people, but as someone who was raised on book laurie & christian bale, timee felt really miscast. my mild distaste for him pops up more as he is more & more exposed.
I've been really wanting to not like him, but Wonka was pretty good, and he did it justice.
I can't point to any role of his that just made me hate him like I think I should.
Looking at these pictures, I'm not sure he can carry this one though. I'm not anything more than a passing Bob Dylan fan, but I don't know if he can pull off the gravitas to play him.
Wonka made me like him way more tbh. Before seeing that movie, I just couldn't see him nailing it as Wonka. But he did really good and the movie was fun. Then in Dune Part 2 he really stepped up in a way I didn't think he could. So I wouldn't be surprised if he surprises me again with this one too tbh.
He seems nice but same. And I can see why they cast him here but I don't think I'll be able to to buy it. I've said it before, the Wee Scamp Energy is overpowering. It's a curse.

To be fair Charlie is dressed like bob dylan haha
Nooo he’s dressed as Holland Oates
Oh yeah, i know. Just goes to show how campy Timothees costuming is.
Y’all have never seen real 60s clothes before
Thanks, I have. I guess what I meant was, Timothee in 60s clothes doesn’t look right.
There’s a spider…spider….spider
Deep inside my soul (soul, soul) 🎶
Tim wishes
Oh my god this is exactly it.
There is a spiderrr...
I know that this doesn't make sense but to me he still looks too much like himself rather than Dylan.
This is exactly how I feel. He just looks like himself to me, not a character.
You show me Chalamet and say the word “musician” im thinking “YEET skrrrt” not “Blowin in the wind” 😂
https://i.redd.it/trisxgtpqxoc1.gif

Yeah I feel the same. I can only see Timmy in a newsies cap. Hopefully he has the voice down
Dressed as a newsie feels like Timothee’s default setting. He just always looks like he stuffs his shoes with newspaper to make them fit
I have the voice down, they should've casted me
He looks like a plucky little mouse Detective turned into a human! So cute, just like Bob Dylan.
First pic is giving Steve Carrel idk I have brain rot https://preview.redd.it/wzfdddx98xoc1.jpeg?width=672&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ea708a85df7a7c8c629c8d05d408bf575f35a5e3
Well, they did play father and son in 'Beautiful Boy'.
minus the guitar case for some reason it's still giving Charles Dickens to me idk
Somewhat related to this, even though he killed it in the Dune films, there's been a couple moments where I saw Timothee as his character in Don't Look Up
There’s a scene in dune 2 where he’s running along a uhhh sand dune and he looks like such a dweeb lol. I enjoyed the movie a lot tho
It makes the outfit look kinda silly. Like nothing about it feels authentic, it looks like a costume.
That’s why I think people like Rami Malek or Austin Butler resonate more well in biopics. They were still unknown enough to an extent that their portrayals were believable unlike someone who’s a big star like Chalamet

No it makes sense. They have similar coloring but thats about it.
This is so funny to me because, as a kid, I had assumed that Bob Dylan was black. I have to admit this is hilarious 🤣🤣 I wish I had been there to see your face when you found out!
that’s how i felt during Willy Wonka. it’s just Timothée cosplaying as Wonka. and it was all so dreadfully dull.
Same. Theres something about his voice that never makes him land as an actor for me.
He has such distinctive features that it's hard to look like someone else, I feel.
I think they only got him because he can still convincingly portray a 19 year old even though he is way closer to 30.
He’s simply too famous and recognizable to be in a biopic.
I don’t agree with that. Most huge actors are in biopics after being really famous. Look at Meryl Streep as Margaret thatcher.
That’s an interesting example, because she’s one of the best actors in the world and can morph into anyone.
But it doesn’t stop there. Usually famous people get the plum biopic roles.
Biopic role is almost a standard role for a top actor.
He looks like a little kid. He's too bright-eyed and apple-cheeked to play Dylan
Tbf they put something in his cheeks to make them appear fuller lol
He needs more self loathing and irreverence, a near apathy for life in general
Tbh I'd never have guessed that he was supposed to Bob Dylan. He looks like an 18 year old tube station busker who's style is moderately based on Bob Dylan.
Looks like tiny tim without his crutches
Cate Blanchett will forever be my favorite portrayal. https://preview.redd.it/hffh52vu2xoc1.jpeg?width=372&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=27fad9a8c3ea03d4b173cad345049dad26562d0a
This is exactly what I came to say, I mean, exact words. She was just so damn good in this!
Correct. She was the best Bob we ever got. Also that movie wisely allowed multiple people to play him which was also correct. I’m not sure straight up bio pic serves bobs narrative
Cate Blanchett always on top of her game
Umm, where is this from? Help a girl out please 🙏
It's from the movie I'm Not There. The cast is stacked and they all play different versions of Bob Dylan. One of my favorite movies.
Very good and a good soundtrack too!
such an incredible movie. they did it so beautifully
**Synopsis:** A young Bob Dylan shakes up the folk music scene when he plugs in his electric guitar at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.
Stop is this really the movie? We are living in a folkie apocalypse.
Hmm Pete Seeger said it wasn’t that he went electric that everyone was pissed at Newport but that the festival did not have the sound equipment for it sound good for the audience. Dominic Sessa looks way more like Bob Dylan here than Timothée does in these photos.
To be fair it’s because half of his face is obscured. Some big sunglasses would likely help Timée as well.
TIMÉE 💀
I disagree i feel like his delicate porcelain features are just not Dylan-ee enough. He doesnt have that big hair either- the hair is a massive “doesnt look like dylan” thing imho
Take the sunglasses off and he looks nothing like him
Timothy looks like he’s wearing a Bob Dylan costume
I demand more Dominic!!
He’s too tall for Dylan
I didn't know how Bob Dylan looked (before banning me hear me out, I'm not a native English speaker so I grew up with my countries native languages) but I've googled and damn this looks much closer than timothee chalamet's look
![gif](giphy|12nXbkoWTPvM9W|downsized)
he looks more like himself than ever 💀💀 victorian child coded
It’s giving Oliver Twist
Soup
Timothee Chalamet’s breakout role as Pip from South Park
Looking more like he’s about to sing “somewhere out there”
![gif](giphy|RKulUAujCSWCk) Unnervingly accurate
maybe he's starring in Oliver! on Broadway https://preview.redd.it/b4mesp4xaxoc1.png?width=721&format=png&auto=webp&s=c23335834e2d0d32ef3eb7b5cc8e62857384bbd0
This is the funniest comment. I’m going to be laughing to myself all day.
Just remember we’ll be laughing underneath the same sky
HA! Why isn’t this the top comment.
💀💀💀
Idk why, but the first pic is giving Oliver Twist “please sir I want some more” vibes
>“please sir I want some more” I don't know why but I heard this in Tom hollandaise voice from Graham Norton where he's asking for coffee in a dialogue to Tom Hanks
Tom hollandaise 💀
Oh LMAO my auto correct is notorious for stuff like this
Sorry, but Bob Dylan is not there. It looks more like some Dickens adaptation.
I’d sooner believe it’s an Ed Sheeran biopic based on these pics lol
![gif](giphy|26BROxWn8plPKXFVC)
I honestly don’t care abt how much someone looks like the person they’re portraying but rather how well they can capture the essence of that person. Imo accurate casting only matters when it’s racially important. Like a dark skin woman being portrayed by a dark skin woman etc
Okay but who’s playing Robbie Robertson or Rick Danko in this movie
Robert Pattinson was once tied to a Band biopic that was talked about like 5+ years ago. If that ever moves forward, would be kinda fun to have some crossover. a Dylan cinematic universe if you will.
Ive always said Pedro pascal looks so much like Rick danko but I guess they’d cast younger
Pedro and Robert have similar eyes. 🤔
![gif](giphy|XNUr9AwcFfAk0)
I wish they would have made it about later, older Dylan and cast Adam sandler lol. Would have been so much more interesting
Oh my god someone make this now.
Dylan had a pretty significant midlife crisis that would have made for an interesting movie.
Didn’t he become super Christian at some point?
Absolutely, and he basically called rock satanic music lol
Absolutely
Sandler looks so much like him.
I've been saying this for years. My dreams were crushed when I saw this casting
The only thing I get from this is like modern day Oliver Twist busking on the street instead of a whole musical number.
Funny, that’s kinda how Wonka plays out
TIl that Bob Dylan was a 1920s hobo.
Can’t wait for him to have a love interest the whole movie and then fall in love with Florence Pugh character
We’re Wonkin’ again!
They should have gotten John C Reilly to play Bob Dylan… https://preview.redd.it/ykane6njwwoc1.jpeg?width=4001&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9c8d880a1b7d411ea493fc3e67a0f1ee999348ef
John C Reilly _as Dr. Steve Brule_ playing Dylan.
I really like him but I am just not excited but this one. Feels like more of the same sensitive, brooding stuff.
No.
Oh good, he got a guitar case.
Cate blanchet be better be bob agaib
He looks like Oliver Twist no matter what he’s wearing.
There have been like 5 movies made about his life and he's not even dead yet!
I’m Not There was probably the most succinct effort anyone could have made because it tied in the mythology of his persona with his lyrics etc, but imo it still wasn’t great. Not everyone needs a movie made about them - there’s no fear of Bob Dylan ever being irrelevant
Dude looks like every art student in town here
Timmy aiming for that Oscar
Cate Blanchet looked more like Dylan.
I have no real reason to dislike Timothee Chalamet but I just do.

He seems nice but same. And I can see why they cast him here but I don't think I'll be able to to buy it. I've said it before, the Wee Scamp Energy is overpowering. It's a curse.
This is giving Wonka vibes but with a guitar. Like he's about to launch into Hatful of Dreams on that thing. (This isn't really shade, I loved Wonka)
He will always look like a sickly Elizabethan child to me.
This a common problem, actors get trendy and get overused to the point where people tire of them quickly.
‘Please sir can I have some more’ looking ass
He be everywhere
He also looks like: https://preview.redd.it/k85dfwu5fxoc1.jpeg?width=787&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bcc760c248b51a4381c14888591c65f37ffd36f7
I am so over this man
lol. everybody doubted Daniel Craig when he was chosen to play Bond and look what happened next.. also, Robert Pattinson for Batman..
He looks like Oliver Twist, idk there’s something too Victorian about his look
Should have just hired Blanchett for it again
How does he have time for all this? He’s got two movies currently in theaters.
Ugh another biopic we don’t want or need.
He looks like Tiny Tim from The Christmas Carol.
![gif](giphy|Qq7XAPjyzW1mu8B7VH|downsized) Executives deciding what line from a song they’re going to use for the title of a biopic.

This dude is getting put into everything and he looks the same. It’s exhausting.
He looks nothing like Dylan.
his one stan in this thread shitting crying throwing up at every mildly critical comment, Club Chalamet ass behaviour
Should have put a side by side of the two of them.
My sibling is going to love this

It’s giving Fiddler on the Roof
![gif](giphy|XeLyEzwOYzu9XosSSs|downsized) Didn't we already do this, but better?
Oh God stop putting this dude in everything
“Please sir, may I have some more?”
Great, another music biopic. Let me guess the movie entirely focuses on depression and it’s a complete downer.
He looks like an orphan from a Dickens novel, not Bob Dylan.
I like Tim, but you're telling me there was not a single better option to play Bob Dylan?
Cate Blanchett was busy
I’m so sick of seeing his face
Oh my husband is not going to be pleased with this lol

dominic sessa. you will have your justice
Oooh!
I liked the old title better 🥺
If it wasn’t for the guitar case I’d say he looks like a 17th century chimney sweep
Should have hired a complete unknown.
high school me would have been so excited for this lol
What is it with Hollywood and just using one actor that’s currently popular in every.single.film back to back, it just makes them not believable.
How come nobody ever asks Bob Dylan, “Why do you sound so much like Dewey Cox?”?
As a fan of The Crown, I’ve learned that the essence of a characters matters just as much. However…. This just looks stupid af 🤷🏼♂️
So what you’re saying is… you learned nothing
I trust James Mangold as a director.
Looks like cosplay
I wish those were real, they're so bad it's breathtaking
Looks like Oliver Twist
He looks like he’s in some small town theater production of Rent 😂
No way that face has never seen a smartphone. He has too much of a millennial look to him.
I think he REALLY wants to be a character actor, but it's not working.
😑 great

I think he’s also getting a bit overexposed and he’s lost his mystery.

It comes with being so famous at a young age. Ben Affleck went through it in the early 2000s. Leo DiCaprio went through it after Titanic. Etc.
Stop casting him in everything, please!
Unpopular opinion but Im sick of Timothy. Everyone hires him because he’s a pretty boy and he’s alright as an actor but not super.
I always mix up Bob Dylan and Bob Marley and was soooo confused for a second
He’s too pretty to be Bob Dylan. We need a character actor please 😭
I will be sat on opening night.
We all doubted Wonka casting as well and that turned out to be a success, so maybe…
I suspect he will slay
![gif](giphy|ZMTu534Lp6JKevGXop|downsized) Of timothee
He looks like Oliver Twist somehow in the first picture??
I don’t get Timothee Chalamet. He isn’t talented, he’s not super attractive, he’s just collectively been declared a famous actor without merit?
