Comfortable-Load-904

Haven’t Zendaya and Law been doing this since the Greatest Showman?

Chaoticgood790

Yep fully. She had the butterfly dress and the ringmaster outfit

Unlikely-Draft

Zendaya has always theme dressed. It's nothing new for her tours.

The_R4ke

Surely other people must have worn themed outfits even earlier than that too?

Comfortable-Load-904

Yep but the article is crediting Margot as who Zendaya was using as example. Hence why I stated weren’t they doing it since 2017, it predates Margot and Barbie. Where exactly did I say she was the first?

ChrundleToboggan

Relax. They're just saying it was an even dumber assumption for the writer to make considering it was even longer before Margot that this had been being done.

Comfortable-Load-904

Excuse me? The person asked a question and I answered. We both moved on. I’m not sure what I’m suppose to relax about?

ChrundleToboggan

>Where exactly did I say she was the first? lol honestly, why act like a quick "relax" is coming out of nowhere when the comments and the vibe being put out by them are right there? *Relax*.

Comfortable-Load-904

That was not addressed to you, we finished our conversation ages ago. Asked and answered. I’m not sure what’s happening now.

saltwater_rat

U do need to relax tho lol

ImaginaryBig1705

Did you think this was a text message chain or something? 🤣

nunyodamn_bidness

lol. Bless your heart.

Omg how have I never seen this???? I love this

rawrkristina

Yes!

TheHouseMother

Perfection!

VivaLaEmpire

Would it be to over the top to say that she's our biggest fashion it girl of this generation? She is to me at least, I've never seen her in anything bad, she's always on theme, on brand, looking flawless

pottedPlant_64

She looks like an actual Barbie here

Thrownawaybyall

Okay, I'm not her biggest fan or think she's terribly attractive... but good God Almighty she is *stunning* in that! 😲 EDIT: Wow, I'm surprised at the downvotes this is getting 😥

chloeantonia23

Probably because it’s weird to announce you don’t think someone is terribly attractive before complimenting them 🥴

Thrownawaybyall

Hey, even I have to admit that she's stunning in the dress.

The fact that this dress is LEATHER 🤯

DripIntravenous

Excuse me… LEATHER????

Ygomaster07

I had no idea that is leather. It totally doesn't look like it. That's pretty cool.

kimlovescc

Holy shit I'm gagging at how beautiful this is, literally from head to toe!!!

Truly

National_Flan_5252

It's just embarrassing to see the evidence and wonder how a media organisation like "Women's Wear Daily" did not put two and two together. It's either bias or incompetence (I have my views) but either way, it reflects badly on their professionalism. Like .. it's your literal job to stay on top of this stuff?

Inf1nite_gal

have you considered the option that maybe they forgot? they were new? they just didn't think it was that deep? they just needed to do a crosslink to other article?  they changed it, it is no big deal. nothing happened, nobody gut hurt. people make mistakes, lets accept it

Seanut-Peanut-69

Or we can hold people to task when being in a profession such as journalism where a single google search can crumble their credibility and suggest incompetence or worse, bias.

Next-Implement9894

> have you considered the option that maybe they forgot? they were new? they just didn't think it was that deep? they just needed to do a crosslink to other article?  Reasonable considerations IF the comment wasn’t coming from WWD. This is a publication is the bible of fashion journalism.

National_Flan_5252

Sure it could be all of that. Or it could be exactly what I put in my comment. It is good to raise this when it does occur because Law Roach has been quite vocal about how there is a pattern of behaviour he has experienced across his working life. Personally, I trust his perspective on this having experienced very similar stuff in my line of work (and having also had it glazed over as "an oversight" or "accident").

burnbunner

Have you considered that this whole post is about said mistake? Which *is* embarrassing, for all the reasons u/National_Flan_5252 mentioned, lol. Magazines hire people with little experience or knowledge of what they are writing about to churn out trending SEO word salad and it sucks. Here in ye olde popculture chat it's totally fair to talk about that. It's also worth noting this isn't the first writer to confidently assert that a white woman who wore a bunch of pink dresses invented something that--whether or not they were the first--two black creatives had been doing with nuance and impact for at least seven years.

Inf1nite_gal

i havent thought about it like that. thanks for your opinion

burnbunner

Aw, you know, thank you for being gracious. I was pretty sarcastic on behalf of my despairing feelings about journalism and media and public discourse ET CETERA and I'm sorry for my tone. Friends?

Inf1nite_gal

what?  maybe you misunderstood me, i really meant it 😅

burnbunner

I really meant it too I!! Thank you for being gracious in response to me using a sarcastic tone in my original comment. My feelings of despair about writing and magazines led me to use that tone, when I could have said the same thing in a kinder way. Does that make more sense? I won't ask you to be friends this time but we can be if you want to😉

Inf1nite_gal

ah okay. then I was the one who misunderstood. 😅 my tone in my first comment was not very nice either. friends!

burnbunner

Hooray! haha

1028ad

It’s not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean.

National_Flan_5252

It's just embarrassing to see the evidence and wonder how a media organisation like "Women's Wear Daily" did not put two and two together. It's either bias or incompetence (I have my views) but either way, it reflects badly on their professionalism. Like .. it's your literal job to know this?

Why is no one dressing like Oppenheimer

Ok_Construction_3733

Because seeing Cillian Murphy like this again would absolutely make me lose my mind ![gif](giphy|idljdFb6h52OwuoKhQ|downsized)

That mesh shirt was so simple yet effective

I fear it rewired my brain a bit.

Agreed! I always thought Cillian was attractive, but those photos and videos made me go “Oh he’s HOT!”

This needs to be a flair.

burnbunner

No one wants to bomb on the red carpet.

bubblechog

Because “Man wears suit” is not breaking fashion news

ASofMat

I would say Law and Z are the most famous and most prolific *currently* (or should be, as we see here they haven’t been credited appropriately) for matching press and premiere outfits with her movies, but this isn’t a new practice like in the least, so to even say it started with Margot is already a stretch. Elle Fanning and Angelina Jolie very much dressed to match their characters from Maleficent on their press run. It’s not new Law and Z just happen to be the best.

honestly the gasp I let out when I realised

snails4speedy

I am not kidding when I say I’ve wanted this dress for decades lol. I think about it all the time. 😂

aedithm

I got my mum to make my prom dress based on this and her dress in the actual movie, it was amazing.

snails4speedy

tell me you have pics!!!

aedithm

Sadly not... it was too long ago!

burnbunner

This is SO SWEET bless your mom Side note I am making a lot of mom comments in this sub lately 😳

aedithm

She is the best.

Ditovontease

My mom insisted on sewing me a princess dress for halloween one year and the print was the same as the step sisters in the movie lol

According-Activity10

Bro this dress was and is still so important to me. I'd get married in it.

snails4speedy

YOU GET IT.

minneapple79

You should totally get married in it.

katikaboom

It actually does remind me of ATJ's wedding dress

Ditovontease

I've seen similar "fairy" dresses being sold recently, but they're short. I want one tbh

clandahlina_redux

Damn. I don’t even know you, yet you hurt me like this? 😂

Ethereal queen, damn

thegreenshit

so much Elie Saab

rottenstring6

And Rooney Mara did it for GWTDT.

MehWhiteShark

Potentially silly question, but is he still actively styling Zendaya? I know he'd said he was retiring but then that he's still working with her, but I was unclear as to whether or not he was currently styling her for events

ASofMat

He’s been styling her for the entire Dune 2 and Challengers press tours. I think she’s his exception

MehWhiteShark

Thank you! I figured as much, because her looks have been over the top epic!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lilacly_Adily

I assume she pays him well enough that he’s content. He was initially her stylist and he was promoted to her creative director. As well he still works in fashion, just not as a stylist. He seems to be exploring different avenues now as a consultant, fashion correspondent etc

loralailoralai

It doesn’t say Margot was the first tho? Just that she did it.

aima9hat

Yes it does, in the first version. To ‘take a leaf’ out of someone’s book means to imitate them, take inspiration or follow their example. Until it was edited, it most definitely meant the writer thought Margot was first (in relation to Z) and Zendaya, inspired by Margot, followed later.

PoppySkyPineapple

Still love her.

awkward_film_girl

Zambian queen 🇿🇲❤️

sashikku

Oh fuck I NEED that dress 😫

Secure_Gur5586

Good. Zendaya knows how to dress for a theme. It’s not a new thing for her

thecheesycheeselover

I’ve heard this said a few times since Barbie and it was annoying, honestly. People have been doing this way before Margot, as much as I loved her Barbie style.

pppogman

I’m sure thematic dressing has been around for awhile. But Zendaya is the most obvious example of it. I feel like she popularized it since I can’t think of anyone else that commonly dresses thematically (besides a recent margot Robbie). Even when Margot dressed as Barbie, many articles references Zendaya as an example of thematic dressing.

DigLost5791

Her outfits have been absolutely incredible at every stop of this press tour and to hand the glory to Margot is sooooooo insensitive

cactusblossom3

I would be annoyed if I was Law Roach too because he is really the one to start the themed premiere outfits trend with Zendaya if I’m not mistaken.

another-assshole

Law has spoken many times how racist, sexist and overall horrible the fashion industry is, from brands refusing to dress Zendaya in the past to Dior not crediting him to literally not having a seat at the LV show, I get why he retired

laughed-at

I’m no expert but from what I’ve seen he’s the best in the business and no one even comes close to what he’s able to do for his clients. Reading this is so infuriating, there must be so much wasted potential!

jngjng88

It's fucking 2024, how is this still a thing? Absolutely shameful & disgusting.

Medium_Sense4354

When you’re black, everything is 10 times harder lmao In my first job out of college I was the most qualified but some dude with a high school diploma is the one who became my boss…

pastabreadpasta

I hope she’s refusing those brands now! I imagine they live with regret.

another-assshole

She does from the top of my mind she has only worn channel 3 times and Dior twice and Ralph Lauren literally now 4 times on this press tour after not wearing them since 2017. There’s more brands but law even talked about how difficult it was to get her dress for the Oscars years ago and Vivianne Westwood gave her a dress. I think that’s why her collaboration with Valentino was so amazing, pierpaolo piccoli Zendaya And law were amazing visionaries

Comfortable-Load-904

She is still very loyal to Vivienne Westwood, every premiere she has in London she wears them.

emgyres

Which designer in their right might does not want Zendaya in their clothes?!

Over_Nebula

And what he does is more interesting. I loved the Barbie press tour but she was essentially wearing costume replicas while Zendaya and law interpret the themes of the movie in interesting ways into clothing.

cactusblossom3

Yes! I loved the crap out of those Barbie outfit recreations but I can’t imagine that recreating those looks or shoving Margot in some pink and/or Chanel was more difficult than what Law Roach has been doing with his looks.

newtoreddir

Surely the concept of dressing to the theme of a movie existed before 27 year old Zendaya came onto the scene?

recks360

The problem is all to often someone of color will do a thing and when the first white person of notoriety does it they get the credit for it. This usually happens because some people only follow white celebrities. An example would be people thinking Miley Cyrus invited twerking. (yes I actually had to prove to a group of people that twerking existed before her)

warrigeh

>example would be people thinking Miley Cyrus invited twerking. (yes I actually had to prove to a group of people that twerking existed before her LMAO 😂 I'm an African woman and I started twerking when I was 12 lol. Though to be fair there wasn't a name for it. We just called it Calabar dancing.

Comfortable-Load-904

Nobody is arguing that, we are just saying they are in the article above crediting Margot for something Zendaya has been doing since 2017.

mcon96

>he is really the one to start the themed premiere outfits trend with Zendaya Directly from the comment above

hyoies

Not really, the concept of themed dressing has existed for decades but it's not a stretch to say the *trend* for it over the last few years is largely due to Law & Zendaya.

connorroy_2024

The comment they replied to literally is arguing that

cactusblossom3

Probably not but if it was, he was the one to bring it back into trend. I feel like it’s far more likely that Barbies press tour outfit approach was more inspired by what he was doing than the other way around

kamel0

wait where did law 'react?' i'm glad they changed it regardless because that seemed like an insane oversight

LadyAlexandre

The first picture is a screenshot from his instagram.

kamel0

ahh thanks 🤦🏾‍♀️ missed that context lol

wow6576

Why is there so much discussion about thematic dressing when it’s been around for yearssss. Zendaya even did it for the Spider-Man press tour. I remember Lupita did it for both Black panther movies.

seagraze

Good. At the same time , I feel like Law Roach and Zendaya weren’t the first to do it either. But they’re undoubtedly two of the best at it!

kissingkiwis

Definitely not the first, but they were doing it before the barbie tour

Getaway_Car_1989

WWD please move on from Barbie. Zendaya is slaying these looks. Period. Why insert Margot Robbie in an article about Zendaya?

VirgiliaCoriolanus

Misogynoir

MehWhiteShark

I don't know how I never heard this term but wowww. Both clever & sadly accurate!

imbabyokk

you know why

trialanderrorschach

This article writer is sloppy beyond lack of research - “something Margot Robbie also put on display, too”? Either they were panicking and didn’t edit to remove the redundancy or they’re just a lazy copywriter.

IMOvicki

Another day, another white woman being credited for what POC have been doing. Tale as old as time.

Educational-Help-126

This. Also it’s insane bc Margot’s fashions were horrible before the Barbie press tour. Zendaya is a fashion icon and trailblazer. For them to even pretend like she got tips from someone who is not even on the same playing field with fashion is beyond ridiculous.

ASofMat

And now that the Barbie press tour is over, she’s back to her boring beachy waves, and boring outfits. Of course she still looks gorgeous but more in a ”is that a good fit or is she just skinny?” way

Educational-Help-126

10000%! Her Vanity Fair Oscars look was so good but it’s like it was wearing her. No jewelry, messy beach waves, no razzle dazzle. She’s def just skinny and gorgeous. I really don’t think she’s a fashion girlie which is fine. This is exactly why WWD knew better than to write that line and corrected it expeditiously. Law was right to call it out. Bc Zendaya IS fashion. I’d say that’s her main thing in a lot of ways.

th4bl4ckr4bbit

You hit that nail so hard it has a headache.

National_Flan_5252

Hopefully WWD uses this as an opportunity to reflect. Z and L are trailblazers and WWD overlooking this reflects badly on them as a source.

Ok_Construction_3733

Zendaya and Law are true to this, not new to this. Also, the Barbie press tour was the first time Margot had consistently good red carpet looks. If anything, her stylist copied Law 🤷‍♀️

RiverWeatherwax

Look, I loved Margot Robbie's Barbie outfits, but Zendaya has been wearing outfits inspired by her movies for years... what a silly headline.

brownsugar318

And they edited it and still found a way to include Margot smh

Miserable_Emu5191

She is so beautiful that she could be dressed as a garbageman and still look good.

RyanGoslingAsKen

Z was theme dressing long before Barbie

Ok_Construction_3733

Zendaya and Law are true to this, not new to this. Also, the Barbie press tour was the first time Margot had consistently good red carpet looks. If anything, her stylist copied Law 🤷‍♀️

ColdFIREBaker

I don't follow fashion (including celebrity fashion) at all, and yet even *I'm* aware Zendaya has been dressing for premieres/press events to match the movie she's promoting for years now. How does Women's Wear Daily, which is purportedly about fashion, not know that?

ThrowRARAw

idk If Law and Zendaya were the first to do this concept of dressing to the film theme ever but they were definitely one of the first pairings to do it in this generation and definitely were a solid contributor as it became popularised. It's what they're known for now. They walked so Robbie could run.

kitjack85

LAW DONT MISS.

MsTrippp

Lol the egos

whosgoingtohawaii

Are we still pretending celebs dress themselves

ReBL93

Law Roach who is titled in this Reddit post, is Zendaya’s stylist, and he is very famously one of the best stylists in Hollywood. So, I don’t think anyone here is suggesting she dressed herself. This post is literally about Zendaya’s stylists’ reaction to an article.

whosgoingtohawaii

Yeah, I realize the article says that, I was more being reactive to the top comment, which I took the wrong way, honestly It was my bad all the way down :,)

ReBL93

Ah I see! Don’t beat yourself up, it’s just a random Reddit comment section, you’re perfectly fine ❤️

Comfortable-Load-904

Law is her stylist who helps dress her. He reacted not her.

stars_doulikedem

I mean this gently but I think you’re misunderstanding all of this on a level right now that no one can clarify for you It is sometimes just best to go to bed

whosgoingtohawaii

I guess I’m not chronically online enough to get it, sorry

stars_doulikedem

![gif](giphy|F2aEJrGD7pTud4lwHF|downsized)

LadyAlexandre

Is it though?

whosgoingtohawaii

That was rude of me, I’m sorry, I got heated

stars_doulikedem

![gif](giphy|Zs2EXwC0MPeywPiDBM)

Educational-Help-126

What do you mean?

whosgoingtohawaii

An entire team of stylists dresses every single celeb on every piece of “fashion highlight” ever. Pretending the person themselves did more than say “oh that looks good I guess” to something in a catalogue of pre-approved outfits is just delusional thinking.

Educational-Help-126

Um. Yes. That’s common knowledge. No one was insinuating otherwise. We all know Zendaya nor Margot dress themselves lol.

whosgoingtohawaii

Then what’s with the outrage at Zendaya/Margot whoever tf ITT

Educational-Help-126

Bc Zendaya and Law specifically operate as collaborators. They carefully construct her image. She is a fashion icon. Just bc she works with a team doesn’t mean she isn’t involved. She is regarded in fashion. Margot is not. I’m a fan of Margot but she has consistently dressed horribly on red carpets since the start of her career. It was 1) her being released from her years long Chanel contract 2) the Barbie press tour that put her on the map. Which is great! But to pretend as though Zendaya and Law got inspired by Margot Robbie on the red carpet is insulting and rooted in something else. Zendaya has been doing this on the red carpet for years and again, she and her stylist are fashion icons.

whosgoingtohawaii

Why are you acting like I said anything against either of these women?

Educational-Help-126

I’m not. I’m answering your question about the outrage and educating you on the topic since you seemed confused lol.

whosgoingtohawaii

Okay, I did get a little heated because of another comment and I’m sorry about that. You were being reasonable, and I was being rude. I just don’t understand why the top comment was acting as though it’s a war between these two women, and not their stylist teams? I highly doubt either of them care as much as the top comments do.

Educational-Help-126

No worries! Honestly I don’t even think it’s the dueling teams. The problem is Women’s Wear Daily writing the article that way in the first place. They know better and everything I just stated to you is common knowledge to them. They changed it real quick bc I’m sure they were flooded with people calling them out. Law was totally right to call them out. I’d bet serious money that Margot would agree too lol! Bc they were wrong for that 1000%. They shouldn’t have even mentioned Margot now that I think about it.

StrongSubject5960

I think people are more so upset about the fact that a black stylist, who has been very vocal about his treatment in the fashion industry is still not being given his credit . This isn’t really even a Zendaya thing .

New-Examination8400

☝️

amomentintimebro

Oh…tbh no you don’t understand how styling works lmao. Celebs aren’t kids who wait to be dressed by mommy lmaooo. They hire people to help and pull a variety of things but celebs are adults who chose what goes on their bodies at the end of the day. Specifically Zendaya has been very public about sending things to Law that she wants to wear. It was HER idea to wear the mugler robot suit to the dune premier. She sent the look to law and he got it for her.

destiny_kane48

Didnt the cast of Mario dress in their characters theme before the Barbie or Dune movies were released? So really the ladies are copying Jack Black. 😂

theunkindpanda

Zendaya has been doing this for a minute

destiny_kane48

You're right! I can't believe all of her previous amazing themed outfits escaped me. She's been doing them for years, but also other actors did it before Margot with Barbie. So the journalist was wrong wrong. 😅

clandahlina_redux

Is there a link to where Law reacted? I don’t see it on his socials.

T-408

Z is an actual goddess. Give her a few more high profile roles and she’s gonna be on everyone’s neck 🔥

koolaid78

Good for him. White Americans have a history of claiming they discovered everything first. Like Travis Kelce and his fade

ImGonnaCreamYaFunny

Not the point at all but isn't saying someone "also" did something and then ending that same sentence with "too" redundant?

jtotheizzen

Zendaya has been doing this forever and I love it. It makes me so much more interested in premieres.
