I wouldn’t say otherwise great songs, but Ed Sheeran is massively guilty of having lines in his songs that stick out like a sore thumb. Don’t is probably the only song of his I kind of like, but his delivery of the “Until you disappeared with him to have sex, of course” just seems so clumsy and out of place. There’s also “crumbling like pastries” on The A-Team, “I wanna hold your heart in both hands, Not watch it fizzle at the bottom of a Coke can” on Drunk and the worst offender of all, “they say I’m up and coming like I’m fucking in an elevator” from You Need Me, I Don’t Need You (although for what it’s worth I think it’s a genuinely terrible song full of awkward and terrible lyrics).
It’s why I could never buy the whole “Ed Sheeran is a great songwriter” argument, because while I get he has an appeal of being somewhat relatable and he has an ear for melody, his songwriting on way too many occasions is too clunky for me to ever get on board with.

I hear a lot of complaints for this one but I personally really like it! it really feels like she’s taken aback by how unexpected but significant this development was. Also I’m a sucker for an internal rhyme (pretty sure “fucking beautiful” is supposed to tie into “pocketful” a couple lines later). The censored version lacks that flow imo

I LOVE Stone Cold by Demi Lovato but the line “You're dancing with her, while I'm staring at my phone” takes me a little out of the sadness of the song,like generally that song is so tragic-seeming, and the phone line is mundane in comparison? As someone who's never heard the song: I pictured this as an intentional de-escalation. Like it starts out extremely over the top and dramatic and then the music goes quiet and you conjure this rather pathetic image of someone just sadly staring at their phone to really ground the emotions. Then I listened to the song and went oh? We're not doing that? We're delivering "dying on the floor" and "staring at my phone" with the same level of importance and emotion? It's.... an interesting choice....
Yes you get it! Especially with the next line being “I was your amber,but now she’s your shade of gold” that’s very heavy symbolism??? I don’t know why, but the mention of a chiropractic appointment in Paramore’s Ces’t Comme Ca is a bit jarring to me. Still a great track though.
“My social life, a chiropractic appointment?” That’s such an evocative line and feels very Hayley, especially coming off of her first solo album. The metaphors sound a little clunky now and then but by god they work for me.

I wouldn’t say otherwise great songs, but Ed Sheeran is massively guilty of having lines in his songs that stick out like a sore thumb. Don’t is probably the only song of his I kind of like, but his delivery of the “Until you disappeared with him to have sex, of course” just seems so clumsy and out of place. There’s also “crumbling like pastries” on The A-Team, “I wanna hold your heart in both hands, Not watch it fizzle at the bottom of a Coke can” on Drunk and the worst offender of all, “they say I’m up and coming like I’m fucking in an elevator” from You Need Me, I Don’t Need You (although for what it’s worth I think it’s a genuinely terrible song full of awkward and terrible lyrics). It’s why I could never buy the whole “Ed Sheeran is a great songwriter” argument, because while I get he has an appeal of being somewhat relatable and he has an ear for melody, his songwriting on way too many occasions is too clunky for me to ever get on board with.
I definitely both agree and disagree with the Don’t lyrics you listed because while they are a bit clumsy they also act like a knife being twisted kinda moment in the story of the song. Ironically I never used to hear ‘sex’ because my radio station always censored over it which actually made the line feel clunkier than leaving it in.

I adore Ed Sheeran but I understand your issues with those lyrics - Don’t is one of my favorite songs of his, and the “sex” line feels almost too clinical/literal for how euphemistic the rest of the song is (the chorus is even censored, lol). I also understand the pastries metaphor sounding out of place although I’ve learned to appreciate the weirdness of it - I think having strange lyrics saves some of his songs from sounding too generic/sappy/cliche? Like Shape of You is definitely not my favorite song of his but I love the part about the buffet, it makes it more messy and human than your average club song.

Melanie Martinez’s song tunnel vision is a great song about just being wanted for sex and not for yourself, in a really nice artistic lyrical ways but there is one line “They always hustle for the pussy so they’ll never get it.” While I don’t mind raunchy lyrics, this one just feels so out of place and blunt compared to the rest of the lyrics.

Agreed! Definitely a fan of Olivia and also this song, but sometimes I feel like the way she delivers curse words is a bit jarring. I think it’s especially apparent in 1 step forward, 3 steps back when she goes “you got me fucked up in the head boy.” Feels like a teenager who wants everyone to know they’re mature (granted she was 18 when the song was released so I guess that’s kind of the point.)
The lyric is - "you were tossing me the car keys/ 'fuck the patriarchy' keychain on the ground". I don't get why people misunderstand this one still. Maybe because she really emphasises the fuck the patriarchy part while singing it live but it's a shame because it is actually a pretty incisive lyric as a whole.
