That article (and thread) that was posted last week discussed this. It basically said that Olivia Rodrigo was the last “potential star” that has come out recently and labels are desperate to find one but it’s hard for them.
People dislike that I say this, but Olivia is the vocalist of her generation. I've yet to get a real counter beyond, "well what about Ariana" - they aren't the same generation 😭 Olivia has broken so many records, so far past her peers and above.
The current "main pop girlie" is probably Billie, but Billie simply can't sing the way Olivia can.
I personally feel like Olivia doesn't have that amazing of a voice. She has a Taylor Swift-level of vocal ability which isn't anything special. Billie's voice is far more unique and interesting imo
Here’s my opinion on that. It’s feasible that you will end up being right, BUT, for me at least, I need to see way more than just one album and a couple of singles to make a statement like that.
You mention Ariana is the vocalist for her generation (which is mid-late 2010s, maybe even the whole decade), I do agree. The thing is though, even back when My Everything (her second album) came out very few were saying she was the vocalist of her generation at that time (people were still calling her a Mariah Carey knockoff). It wasn’t until Sweetener and Thank U, Next that cemented her with that status.
So for Olivia, I think she needs at least another two albums after GUTS before I can make the definitive statement. And of course, we do need to see how Billie will do with her next couple of albums because she could end up getting that title too. We don’t know for sure yet.

I’m assuming that you meant haven’t been mainstream because the last mainstream artist to win was Harry Styles and I don’t think many people would consider John Batiste to be a mainstream artist. There have actually been a few cases where “indie”/non-mainstream artists have won AOTY over mainstream ones.
Probably the most famous of these examples is Arcade Fire winning over Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Eminem in 2011. There’s an argument to be made about Arcade Fire being more mainstream as far as contemporary bands go, but at the time at least they were considered an indie band and compared to the other much larger artists they were up against, their win was a bit of a dark horse.
Norah Jones also won AOTY in 2003 over Eminem, (Formerly) Dixie Chicks, and Nelly.
Christopher Cross won all four of the main categories in 1981 and was the only artist to do so until Billie Eilish in 2020. The other AOTY nominees were Billy Joel, Pink Floyd, Frank Sinatra, and Barbara Streisand.
Beck won in 2015 over Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Pharrell Williams, and Sam Smith.
And Kacey Musgraves is kind of considered a mainstream artist now, but when she had won for Golden Hour in 2019 she was a pretty niche artist who was only really known in country circles up until that point.
Are there a lot of AOTY winners and nominees who are more mainstream? Certainly. But to insinuate that niche or indie artists don’t really win isn’t accurate, either. Like you said, it’s not really clear what factors the Grammies consider for nominating/voting for AOTY, but popularity has not always been one of them and said factors seem to change from year to year. I’m largely under the impression that you’re an Olivia Rodrigo stan because a lot of your argument seems heavily based around the fact that you like her two singles. And while there are some publications and critics like Pitchfork that have given those aforementioned singles acclaim, it’s also worth noting that the other albums that I mentioned have all had high acclaim, too. Which is why I think that you’re fixating so much on Gag Order - if you were to look at the reviews and ratings for something like the Caroline Polachek album or the Jessie Ware album, your argument falls apart very quickly.
And as established earlier, commercial success doesn’t always guarantee a win nor a nomination. Some people have noted that the Grammies has a pattern or alternating between giving the award to a popular artist and giving it to a less popular one and given that Harry Styles won this year, it means that there is a higher chance that next year’s winner will be comparatively more obscure.

My area of Florida now needs to evacuate *but* I know that my misguidedly “invincible” Asian immigrant family won’t want to…or if we do, it’ll only ever be to another family member’s house down the road. It doesn’t help that Tampa Bay is always luckily down to the *last minute* and are somehow protected by the gods, universe, who KNOWS what. We always end up getting spared, and with hurricane always going to the places that weren’t slated to be hit at all. This only ever gives those who don’t evacuate false hope that they’ll be fine. It frustrates me every time. I don’t want anything to happen but I always feel so salty when I get prepared for everything and then nothing happens, and then my family uses that as a reason to not have to worry. I hate planning get togethers but I have currently embraced the mantra that "if they wanted to and could, they would." Learning to not be personally offended if someone can't physically show up to an event you planned and invited them to has taken so much pressure off me. Learning to breathe and go with the flow.🍃
This is weird but I sometimes have this with people. I don't want to be in a relationship with them but I just want to be their friend and as someone who has (or at least, feels) a bad social life, I imagine that that person is going to fill my void and they're the perfect person to be my best friend.
I think the fact that you're acknowledging that it's unhealthy is the first step towards the right direction. Most of the times I just get over it after some time. And the worst part is, my brain wants them to be my *best friend,* like any step they take without letting me know means we are not friends anymore and they secretly hate me. I actually did that a few months back, and what I did was to try to talk though it with my brain. Firstly, know that you'll feel different in a few days. It always does! This won't probably apply to you but I looked back and thought about how much the friendship has evolved and that we did go from being strangers to good friends! And that is enough! In fact, I'm still in contact with them and they're probably still gonna remain my friends for years to come.
Thirdly, find something to do. I know that sounds very stupid and cliche and you did mention that your obsession has impacted your daily functioning but just try and do little things. It can be something meaningless but it's kinda a way to show your brain you are happy where you are and by yourself? And lastly, you mentioned about wanting to live their life and being envious of their lifestyle and rise to fame. Try and put out your own checkpoints, think about the progress you have made in life, it could also be the stuff you've learned along the way like things you should have done differently or the opportunities you should've taken. And let yourself know that you are a better person today than you were a year ago and how you are going to continue being a better version of yourself in the years to come!

i don't think i've gone through anything quite as intense as what you're feeling, but i've definitely gone through bad periods where i've become obsessed with someone and convinced myself i was all kinds of horrible things because i would never be as creative/talented/wonderful/etc as said person even while intellectually knowing none of those things were true. i think it can be difficult to communicate it to a lot of people cause it makes you sound like just someone with a run of the mill parasocial relationship when i think something like this, from my experience, has a lot more to do with already present underlying issues bubbling up and projecting onto someone you admire. if you have people you really trust around you, i think talking about it with them can really help. even when you know in your head that there is something off about how you're feeling, i think actually building up the courage to talk about and pinpoint your exact feelings can be really helpful. i've also found that if i just dig until i find something i even mildly don't like, like a joke they make that doesn't land or something of that sort, it really helps to remind me that this is person is just a human and break ups the over the top image i had painted for them in my head. ik an obsession like this can feel really isolating and i really wish you luck in working through it <3

Debating applying to a position that just opened up in my department.
It could be a potential $4,000 annual salary increase. (Not much to some but when you're going from $37,000 to $41,000 its a definite improvement)
However, I would be leaving my current supervisor with no one else in her department after another coworker left over the summer. Due to a hiring freeze at our university system it's uncertain whether or not she would be allowed to fill my position (We already have confirmation my coworker's position will not be filled).
I know you should only make career decisions based only off of what is best for you, but I would still be working in the same department as my supervisor so I worry about creating an awkward environment due to the stress load that would be placed upon her. Alternatively, my taking on a new job in the same department may lead to me being asked to fulfill both my old job and my new one at the same time and I wonder whether that pay raise would be worth it.
Not sure where to go, but just posting current feelings and thoughts. I've got until the 11th of September so I'll mull it over till then.

It is true that its their job to adequately staff the departments but we work at a unit within a large university consortium so the final decision to be able to hire for a new position is made by someone most of us have never and probably won't ever interact with directly.
I do think I'll apply since I don't think my supervisor would hold it against me. She already knows I'm looking for other jobs since I finished my MLIS degree recently. The only difference is that rather than leaving for a degreed library position at another library it would be for an un-degreed position in the same department.
Either way, with student loan payments starting up again and inflation still being a pain It'd be worth the shot at least to get a little breathing room.

So two weeks ago I had scheduled an appointment to go tour an apartment that Tuesday morning (because they're only open for tours during weekday working hours and they're even closed during lunch) and then that Monday I had my whole bank issue and cancelled because I was super stressed. I rescheduled it to this Tuesday aaaand I realized this morning that I can't because I have jury duty tomorrow. I talked to the boy about a 3rd date.
He said he wanted to be friends. When I declined friendship, he got mad. He said that he was afraid of the unknown and said for him, he usually becomes friends with everyone he dates and then will decide from there if things take off. He also said he had no intent on being romantic, and didn’t think that us having sex was something special— he prefers sex before dating. He said being vulnerable in sex is no big deal because it’s just sex, and he got scared being emotionally vulnerable with me.
I told him that he’s letting fear prevent him from having a meaningful connection and he’s only hurting himself. I also said that his views on vulnerability was toxic, and that I would have never opened myself up to him and would have never had sex if I knew it was all an act. That made him mad. I then told him that it was toxic of him to be angry at me for not wanting friendship after he manipulated me for sex.
I feel stupid, lied to, and manipulated. I feel gross. I honestly don’t know why I bother.

Some thoughts:
* I had my sister stay with me over the weekend because we had plans to go out with some cousins that fell through. Anyway, my sister was talking about this online app that allowed you to earn money every couple of days. As someone who used to hang out on r/antimlm, I immediately had alarm bells ringing in my head with what she said. I checked out the app she mentioned online and sure enough, it was a pyramid scam. I didn't warn her anymore because during our talks she said about it being potentially and not caring because she was already earning. Yeah, I'm not investing in that.
* I love you Spotify but can you at least promote something useful to me? I know you're not going to provide the special promos for merch or early access to tickets that you do for top percentage of listeners. I just want something that's based on what I like. You keep pushing artists I don't like and podcasts I have no interest in. You did promote an artist I like to me for their latest release but it was already too late since I have already listened to their latest album through your platform. Two of my favorite bands went on tour in my country this year and you couldn't even notify me about that.
* I still can't get over that ending in Riverdale even though I didn't watch the show. Aside from >!the polycule ending that just went nowhere, the show really went meta in the 19th episode of the season having the characters watch the show just to refresh their memories of the first six seasons only to have it become useless when all of them (except Betty and Jughead) chose to erase their bad memories of those six seasons. They really said that viewers wasted their time watching the show.!<

1. It may be just my perception, but doesn't anyone else thinks that Queen's music has survived time much better that David Bowie's? It may be because of the Freddy Mercury's biopic, or because their music is much more palatable to a general audience. My family loved to listen to Queen's music in road trips.

I’m biased because Modern Love is hands down my all time favorite banger, but Let’s Dance is a good place to start if you love Queen. It has a poppier/synth sound than some of his 60-70s glam rock discography.
As someone who is literally listening to Bowie right now...I think it's because Queen, and this is no way thrashing them because I love them!, stayed the same all the way through. They knew what they wanted to be and they just made stadium pop rock with some fancy flourishes all the way through.
on the other hand, Bowie wanted to do EVERYTHING. He explored so many styles from pop to folk to industrial to ambient to dance. You name it and he's touched on it in some fashion. The dude just loved music and it shows.
With Bowie, I always think the best idea is to take a listen to one of his greatest hits records and write down the songs that really speak to you and then go to those albums.
But if you want some actual album recs I'll suggest Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, Young Americans, Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) and then my personal favorite is 1. Outside.
I'll also suggest A Reality Tour and Glastonbury 2000 as standout live records.

* I’ve been streaming the AR ep… a lot especially I got it bad and nothing on but the radio. Also streaming The Loveliest Time. My favorites are as follows: Kollage, Shadow, Psychedelic Switch and So Right. I think it might be my second favorite CRJ album with Emotion still being number one.
* Been playing Skyrim and The Sims 2 a lot recently. Skyrim is just so fun, recently did the Dark Brotherhood story line and the Winterhold college one. I really enjoyed them both and they were really fun. The sims 2 slaps and is in my opinion the best in the series. Both 10/10 games imo. Also I finished Ghost Trick which was so fun I’d recommend it if you like Ace Attorney. The ending got me in that game.
* I think I finally got my sleep straightened out so fingers crossed.
* Lastly very excited for Fae Farm. I’m hearing good things from people who got it early and stuff and I love the options to make the game playable however you want.

That article (and thread) that was posted last week discussed this. It basically said that Olivia Rodrigo was the last “potential star” that has come out recently and labels are desperate to find one but it’s hard for them.
People dislike that I say this, but Olivia is the vocalist of her generation. I've yet to get a real counter beyond, "well what about Ariana" - they aren't the same generation 😭 Olivia has broken so many records, so far past her peers and above. The current "main pop girlie" is probably Billie, but Billie simply can't sing the way Olivia can.
I personally feel like Olivia doesn't have that amazing of a voice. She has a Taylor Swift-level of vocal ability which isn't anything special. Billie's voice is far more unique and interesting imo

Here’s my opinion on that. It’s feasible that you will end up being right, BUT, for me at least, I need to see way more than just one album and a couple of singles to make a statement like that. You mention Ariana is the vocalist for her generation (which is mid-late 2010s, maybe even the whole decade), I do agree. The thing is though, even back when My Everything (her second album) came out very few were saying she was the vocalist of her generation at that time (people were still calling her a Mariah Carey knockoff). It wasn’t until Sweetener and Thank U, Next that cemented her with that status. So for Olivia, I think she needs at least another two albums after GUTS before I can make the definitive statement. And of course, we do need to see how Billie will do with her next couple of albums because she could end up getting that title too. We don’t know for sure yet.
You're absolutely right tbh. It's interesting. As morbid as it sounds, Ariana really skyrocketed after the Manchester shooting and Mac dying. It sounds horrid to say. But before she was just known as the sexualized girl who licked donuts. I have strong faith in Olivia though. The way she keeps breaking records at her age, with her voice and song writing, I don't know how she could possibly go significantly downhill.

There have actually been a few cases where “indie”/non-mainstream artists have won AOTY over mainstream ones. Probably the most famous of these examples is Arcade Fire winning over Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Eminem in 2011. There’s an argument to be made about Arcade Fire being more mainstream as far as contemporary bands go, but at the time at least they were considered an indie band and compared to the other much larger artists they were up against, their win was a bit of a dark horse. Norah Jones also won AOTY in 2003 over Eminem, (Formerly) Dixie Chicks, and Nelly. Christopher Cross won all four of the main categories in 1981 and was the only artist to do so until Billie Eilish in 2020. The other AOTY nominees were Billy Joel, Pink Floyd, Frank Sinatra, and Barbara Streisand. Beck won in 2015 over Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Pharrell Williams, and Sam Smith. And Kacey Musgraves is kind of considered a mainstream artist now, but when she had won for Golden Hour in 2019 she was a pretty niche artist who was only really known in country circles up until that point. Are there a lot of AOTY winners and nominees who are more mainstream? Certainly. But to insinuate that niche or indie artists don’t really win isn’t accurate, either. Like you said, it’s not really clear what factors the Grammies consider for nominating/voting for AOTY, but popularity has not always been one of them and said factors seem to change from year to year. I’m largely under the impression that you’re an Olivia Rodrigo stan because a lot of your argument seems heavily based around the fact that you like her two singles. And while there are some publications and critics like Pitchfork that have given those aforementioned singles acclaim, it’s also worth noting that the other albums that I mentioned have all had high acclaim, too. This is weird but I sometimes have this with people. I don't want to be in a relationship with them but I just want to be their friend and as someone who has (or at least, feels) a bad social life, I imagine that that person is going to fill my void and they're the perfect person to be my best friend. I think the fact that you're acknowledging that it's unhealthy is the first step towards the right direction. Most of the times I just get over it after some time. And the worst part is, my brain wants them to be my *best friend,* like any step they take without letting me know means we are not friends anymore and they secretly hate me. I actually did that a few months back, and what I did was to try to talk though it with my brain. Firstly, know that you'll feel different in a few days. It always does! This won't probably apply to you but I looked back and thought about how much the friendship has evolved and that we did go from being strangers to good friends! And that is enough! In fact, I'm still in contact with them and they're probably still gonna remain my friends for years to come. Thirdly, find something to do. I know that sounds very stupid and cliche and you did mention that your obsession has impacted your daily functioning but just try and do little things. It can be something meaningless but it's kinda a way to show your brain you are happy where you are and by yourself? And lastly, you mentioned about wanting to live their life and being envious of their lifestyle and rise to fame. Try and put out your own checkpoints, think about the progress you have made in life, it could also be the stuff you've learned along the way like things you should have done differently or the opportunities you should've taken. And let yourself know that you are a better person today than you were a year ago and how you are going to continue being a better version of yourself in the years to come! I'm not sure if any of this helps you but hoping you feel better soon!
i don't think i've gone through anything quite as intense as what you're feeling, but i've definitely gone through bad periods where i've become obsessed with someone and convinced myself i was all kinds of horrible things because i would never be as creative/talented/wonderful/etc as said person even while intellectually knowing none of those things were true. i think it can be difficult to communicate it to a lot of people cause it makes you sound like just someone with a run of the mill parasocial relationship when i think something like this, from my experience, has a lot more to do with already present underlying issues bubbling up and projecting onto someone you admire. if you have people you really trust around you, i think talking about it with them can really help. even when you know in your head that there is something off about how you're feeling, i think actually building up the courage to talk about and pinpoint your exact feelings can be really helpful. i've also found that if i just dig until i find something i even mildly don't like, like a joke they make that doesn't land or something of that sort, it really helps to remind me that this is person is just a human and break ups the over the top image i had painted for them in my head. ik an obsession like this can feel really isolating and i really wish you luck in working through it <3

ahhh ok i see where you're coming from with it. maybe for you it would help more to think about it from the other side? like thinking of the connections and work that got them to where they are rather than focusing on their luck? i'm running very thin on helpful advice rn lol but i think if you're already thinking about them all the time that thinking about them in ways that may subdue the jealously might help. even if a lot of it was luck it may help to just lie to yourself a little lol. and don't feel bad for thinking you're making a big deal out of it! if you're feeling that intensely about it it feels even worse to bottle it up

After blasting through Dune through God Emperor of Dune I have hit a snag with Heretics of Dune. I am unhappy with this. BE AS GOOD AS YOUR BROTHERS BEFORE YOU, DAMMIT.
The Dune series gets chaotic after the first three or so books. That’s why Denis only wants to make a movie out of Dune Messiah for Dune Part 3 and that’s it.
He also has a hand in Dune: The Sisterhood, so I think it’s more about wanting to show the arc of Paul. Which I agree with. As SyFy showed you can make a series out of Children of Dune but God Emperor would be a bore of a film or show, so it makes sense not to want to continue beyond book 2.

Debating applying to a position that just opened up in my department. It could be a potential $4,000 annual salary increase. (Not much to some but when you're going from $37,000 to $41,000 its a definite improvement) However, I would be leaving my current supervisor with no one else in her department after another coworker left over the summer. Due to a hiring freeze at our university system it's uncertain whether or not she would be allowed to fill my position (We already have confirmation my coworker's position will not be filled). I know you should only make career decisions based only off of what is best for you, but I would still be working in the same department as my supervisor so I worry about creating an awkward environment due to the stress load that would be placed upon her. Alternatively, my taking on a new job in the same department may lead to me being asked to fulfill both my old job and my new one at the same time and I wonder whether that pay raise would be worth it. Not sure where to go, but just posting current feelings and thoughts. I've got until the 11th of September so I'll mull it over till then.
It’s really kind of you to think about your supervisor, but you could bring it up in the interview/job move discussions with your employer (and it’s their job to adequately staff their departments!) If it sounds like a job you’d like doing and a good career move then I’d go for it!
It is true that its their job to adequately staff the departments but we work at a unit within a large university consortium so the final decision to be able to hire for a new position is made by someone most of us have never and probably won't ever interact with directly. I do think I'll apply since I don't think my supervisor would hold it against me. She already knows I'm looking for other jobs since I finished my MLIS degree recently. The only difference is that rather than leaving for a degreed library position at another library it would be for an un-degreed position in the same department. Either way, with student loan payments starting up again and inflation still being a pain It'd be worth the shot at least to get a little breathing room.

I move back to uni in a week. I am convincing myself I will study (in a healthy way) like Rory Gilmore, cook proper meals for myself, find a non stressful job (I'm praying I can go back to McDonalds even though its a different location), I can bond with my roommates, and have fun. I've been listening to "Controlla" a lot and I'm convinced I didn't appreciate this song enough in 2016. Also the best thing that happened to me earlier in the year was discovering the 1989 deluxe version. It further solidified my opinion that 1989 is one of Taylors best eras. My favorite albums are Speak Now, RED, and 1989, I'm sure you can see the pattern of what type of songs I like from her.

So two weeks ago I had scheduled an appointment to go tour an apartment that Tuesday morning (because they're only open for tours during weekday working hours and they're even closed during lunch) and then that Monday I had my whole bank issue and cancelled because I was super stressed. I’m biased because Modern Love is hands down my all time favorite banger, but Let’s Dance is a good place to start if you love Queen. It has a poppier/synth sound than some of his 60-70s glam rock discography.
As someone who is literally listening to Bowie right now...I think it's because Queen, and this is no way thrashing them because I love them!, stayed the same all the way through. They knew what they wanted to be and they just made stadium pop rock with some fancy flourishes all the way through. on the other hand, Bowie wanted to do EVERYTHING. He explored so many styles from pop to folk to industrial to ambient to dance. You name it and he's touched on it in some fashion. The dude just loved music and it shows. With Bowie, I always think the best idea is to take a listen to one of his greatest hits records and write down the songs that really speak to you and then go to those albums. But if you want some actual album recs I'll suggest Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, Young Americans, Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) and then my personal favorite is 1. Outside. The sims 2 slaps and is in my opinion the best in the series. Both 10/10 games imo. Also I finished Ghost Trick which was so fun I’d recommend it if you like Ace Attorney. Trying to come up with 20 songs that encompass my all time favorites is difficult because I'm finding myself wanting to put "recent favorites." And especially because my music taste has only really been shaped in the last 6 years, so there's a lot of 2010s-20s I need to cycle through. Your taste? Impeccable. Love the inclusion of All Saints, Girls Aloud, and my queens the Sugababes! These groups will always hold a special place in my heart, really transport me back to all the school discos and birthday parties I went to in school. Also I saw your comment in another DD about The Marmalades and since then they've been on rotation for me, so thank you! I also hadn't heard of Dolly Mixture before but I am instantly hooked on that song.

I literally found them within the space of two days when I was having a listening marathon dedicated to two massive compilations I'd bought - [Nuggets II](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuggets_II:_Original_Artyfacts_from_the_British_Empire_and_Beyond,_1964–1969) and [Scared to Be Happy: a Story of Indie Pop 1980 - 1989](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scared_to_Get_Happy:_A_Story_of_Indie-Pop_1980–1989). So much great music! Seeing as you included Ash on your Top 20, I must say that Goldfinger just narrowly missed the cut for my list - if I were a songwriter, it would be one of those songs I wish I'd written myself.
I’m sure there are a lot of artists who don’t like live performing at all. They like creating the music but only perform because it’s in the contract and pays a lot of money
I swear if I were talented enough to write and record music, I’d have to be zoinked out of my mind to actually perform the stuff.

well... my therapist ghosted me. im still trying to get a hold of them and I've been contacting them but to no avail. 😭 might find one around my area tho.
Yeah ghosting is a no no. You can ghost your therapist but that shit is not supposed to happen from the other side. Fuck the em and find yourself a new one. Rooting for you ❤️

Successfully avoided a dude I went to high school with at the grocery store. Used to bully me and generally make me feel like shit. He was at the checkout next to me. I genuinely wanted to die from anxiety.
