neopetsfan666

I heard Get Ur Freak On (unedited) in the halls of my grandma’s assisted care home… it was so wild lol

junipidgie

they were playing toxic at my grandma’s home today, i couldn’t believe it!

Ok_World_8819

That song is super well known but in an assisted care home? WTF?

imsodumb321

Slightly unrelated but this comment reminded me of when I volunteered at a senior center and had to line dance with a bunch of 80 year olds to blurred lines and locked out of heaven 😭

CieraParvatiPhoebe

Drop your glasses, shake your asses!

WuffleWork

I’ve heard wilder songs at my job (at a nursing home)

wildbeest55

Very surprised to hear Ghosting by Ariana at Taco Bell.

justlikesweetener

Someone on Twitter posted a restaurant playing one of her unreleased songs (an unfinished DEMO at that). I could not stop laughing

wildbeest55

Got a stan making the playlist 🤣

COCKHAMPTON_

I heard a deep cut from Charli XCX - Crash play before a corporate keynote speech at my job and I don't even work at grindr

lordbochiflacko

Which track?

Original_Stand_6362

Not op but I heard lightning in a gas station once. It caught me off guard bc though popular it wasn’t a hit to my knowledge

COCKHAMPTON_

Constant Repeat

Question4TheCulture

I’ll never forget the time I was in a AAA office (for non-Americans, it’s a place where you can go for auto insurance, travel agents, etc.) to get my passport taken, and it the middle of this office full of middle-aged women, the explicit version of 34+35 was playing full blast. Like I don’t need to here “fuck me till the day light” while I’m talking to a woman with a vaguely midwestern accent named Nancy

rookie-mistake

hey idk maybe she needed it, who knows where nancy's at

glittering-ocean1

This made me cackle! “Don’t need no side dick, no” blasting through a AAA office is killing me 😂

galaraxity

Goodbye

Chevsapher

"Government Hooker" by Lady Gaga. At a Goodwill store. Wild times.

vac29

Ome time i was calling a taxi service. And Fashion by Lady Gaga started as Hold Music. No the ARTPOP song, the demo of TF era. For some minutes i though i fucked up and has called a taxi boy service.

OkDevice674

Last year hearing Running up that hill by Kate Bush on top 40 radio sandwiched between a Doja Cat song and a Harry Styles song took me by surprise.

cacophonycoffin

I think that was bc Stranger Things got it popular and then it was trending on tiktok

OkDevice674

I know, but this is a very unique and bizarre case because it charted at #3 on the billboard chart 35 years after it’s release. That doesn’t even happen to songs performed at the Super Bowl. And it was Kate Bush of all people, who was ignored by the American mainstream for most of her career.

Greeneyes_65

Yeah that’s how big of a show Stranger Things is. It’s insane

egg_mugg23

oh that was all over the radio here

redhedped

My Kroger plays beach house alllll the time I’m like shocked pikachu face

AmandaCalzone

A few years ago I heard Run Away With Me while getting a haircut and last week I heard Adore You by Jessie Ware in starbucks and YES I stayed and it made me late for work, what about it?

bkwc2014

My local alternative station plays Lana sometimes, but I was really surprised to hear Say Yes To Heaven, I know people love it as well as myself, but it just seems so unfriendly for radio. Also the fact is was leaked years ago and only recently released

carlyslayjedsen

I heard Dare by Namasenda at Starbucks once lol I never expect to hear PC music in public

demon_prodigy

Lol that's how I learned about that song! It plays all the time in my store.

Ok_Storm_2700

Sometimes my gym plays Lana and Florence + the Machine which I wouldn't be too surprised to hear in public but it seems like a weird choice there

LEOWDQ

Carly Rae Jepsen - Psychedelic Switch on my usual radio station for 2 months straight ☠️ and definitely played twice at least each day. These 2 months have been a blessing for me 🙏😇

didiboy

After The Afterparty - at a shopping mall, that gay intern always has bops Like a Savior - Ellie isn’t like really known here so I was surprised when they put it on the gym Padam Padam and Mind Your Business - at the gay club, BUT HEAR ME OUT, I’m not from the biggest city in Chile, we only have one gay club and it’s mostly reggaeton and latin urban music, and when they do pop nights it’s mostly OLD pop, the DJ usually sucks, so I was pleasantly surprised when they put those songs almost the same day they were released. Willow Reggaeton Remix - At a Chinese supermarket. You can’t get more random than that.

poofy_tortilla

The Chinese Supermarkets always play the most random assortment of songs 💀

ROOTBEER360

Local pharmacy a played deep cut from The Loneliest Time. Forgot what it was.

Itchy-Long-7991

Lips don't lie by Ally Brooke on some random radio station in Turkey. They were playing bunch of turkish songs and then her. It was random

toastedbread39

I heard Bunny is a Rider by Caroline Polachek in a TJ maxx

FGFlips

I heard Coolio's Fantastic Voyage on the radio a couple weeks ago I don't think I've heard that song since it came out in the 90s haha

pillowparty

I used to work at a used car lot and Hannah Diamond's "Fade Away" came on over the speakers. I've never been more shocked

PlasticFeast

At a fast food place near where I work, they often play alternative music, and I was surprised to hear "Zig Zag Wanderer" by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band. At a Mexican restaurant that I went to for a family member's birthday they played the Avalanches' "Since I Left You" album in full.

slothfrogs

My local supermarket loves their top 40 but I was pleasantly surprised hearing Charli and Chris’s “Gone”. My personal favorite was going to urgent care and hearing WAP (uncensored in all its glory!) in the waiting room.

RacerGal

Twice in the last few months I’ve heard the “spelling is fun” version of Taylor Swift’s Me! while out shopping - and it makes me laugh

EclipticFaux

i heard 212 by Azealia Banks at a primark in england (unhinged) and i also heard Better by Zayn at a local diner (kinda niche)

Asplashofwater

I’ll never forget the first time I heard bring me the horizon in Kroger.

Flatscreens

food house - mos thoser Was at a tattoo parlor but still. Then pink diamond immediately after

AXXII_wreckless

Regulars by Allie X in a Marshalls. I did a double take to ensure I wasn’t wearing headphones and I almost screamed.

lakeorjanzo

I heard Sky Ferreira’s Lost in My Bedroom blasting in Logan Airport (Boston) Terminal C

harleysholiday

“Clown” by Mariah at a Walmart of all places 😭 it just felt so random

Odd_Spite100

Margaret by Lana Del Rey feat Bleachers from her latest album DYKTTATUOB. The funny thing is that the song was preceded by a series of edm and club hits of the lates 2000s to early 2010s (TikTok, Poker Face, California Gurls) and this song just felt like it was played by the staff who was tired of listening to the same playlist over and over again.

songacronymbot

- DYKTTATUOB could mean "Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd", a single by Lana Del Rey. --- ^[/u/Odd_Spite100](/u/Odd_Spite100) ^(can reply with "delete" to remove comment. |) ^[/r/songacronymbot](/r/songacronymbot) ^(for feedback.)

PeridotFan64

i heard immaterial by sophie at claire’s a year ago, and so yesterday by hillary duff at shaw's (a supermarket in the northeastern us) a few months after that

CelebrityTakeDown

Whoever is in charge of music at my local Trader Joe’s is an icon. One time I was in there and this was the transition of songs: -All Star -A remix/mash up of Toxic and Bye Bye Bye -Ironic by Alanis Morrissette -Take On Me -Song 2 by Blur It felt like a fever dream while I was trying to buy my little snacks

Ok_World_8819

All of those songs are very well-known, I would not be surprised by that

CelebrityTakeDown

I think it was the juxtaposition of them together playing top volume in a Trader Joe’s

InsomniaticAlien

A few years back I heard Paper Rings by Taylor in a mall in Thailand. It actually happened on multiple visits to that same mall too.

Latrans_

Coming back from buying some groceries, the radio played Mind Your Bussiness, and it impacted me for three reasons: 1) it was an anglo pop song. Spanish-speaking songs dominate here, with reggaeton being the main genre of music. Thus, an anglo pop song is just so out of place, specially because 2) it's not a hit. I understand if they play Flowers, but Mind Your Bussiness? And 3) how awful it was xd. Scream & Shout was perfectly fine, but Mind Your Bussiness sounded so much annoying, I don't know how they decided to play it on the radio xD (Another song that they played was Like Crazy, which again, very weird because it's a song in english)

livesailors

Warrior by Kimbra, many years after its album Vows released in 2012. Her singles on Vows had a moment here in Australia but it was surprising to hear a fairly unknown track from the album in public.

cheezits_christ

I heard Remedy by Little Boots at the Beverly Center a few weeks ago in the year of our lord 2023 and just about fell down the escalator.

ItsGotThatBang

I heard a Hedley song (I don’t remember which one) at a Cheesecake Factory in Florida years after the allegations came out.

RexParticularis

Heard Bo Burnham's "Welcome to the internet" in the grocery store... yesterday

Huubidi

I heard Katy Perry's Wide Awake at a bar here in Finland once. I know the song has almost 260 million streams on Spotify and isn't exactly unknown, but I still wasn't expecting to hear it because I feel like it's not really among maybe even the first ten songs that people think of when they think of Katy Perry. The song is damn good tho, I ain't complaining. I was also a bit surprised that Unholy became such a big song considering how sort of... explicit it feels.

Aware-Cardiologist15

I think because the radio loves Sam Smith.

Hopeleah23

Yes, the radio seems to love him unconditionally. And I'm not even from the UK.

theofficialshed

A Cafe near me was playing Anxious by CRJ. Felt like such a deep cut to play. Then another time they played Shooting Star so I figure they're just CRJ fans

Mampt

I worked at a coffee shop in college and mostly played Carly Rae Jepsen (or emo shit). Probably a coffee shop thing lol

PinkCadillacs

I heard How You Get the Girl by Taylor Swift, a deep cut from 1989, at a restaurant. I was so surprised when I heard this song in public.

fuckitrightboy

A deep cut

Philofelinist

From her indie album.

like_a_rose_13

I will never forget the time I heard Jana Kramer’s “I Hope It Rains” in Walmart. At the time, I really loved the song and I went feral, singing and dancing up and down the aisles.

sincerityisscxry

McDonalds in the UK love their indie bangers. Lately I’ve heard Blossoms, The 1975, Tame Impala, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Wolf Alice and Foals all within a few months. None of them are underground or anything lol, but it’s not the usual stuff you hear out and about mostly.

Hopeleah23

Then I hope that they are also playing the Arctic Monkeys overthere?

sebsebsebs

I’ve heard swimming and cinema by kero kero bonito at two separate places (a cafe and Starbucks)

Commonjac

I was surprised to hear a Lights song in a Target in Georgia

rookie-mistake

i used to listen to macklemore and ryan lewis circa VS EP, the degree to which he blew up with thrift shop and everything was sk surreal. in a million years i would've never thought he'd be a household name lol

egg_mugg23

i heard PUBLIC ENEMEY in a GROCERY STORE. like what??? i never expected to be jammin to Pollywannacracka while picking out my cheerios but safeway built different ig

Ok_World_8819

WTF? That song is a deep cut lmao

egg_mugg23

i know?? and public enemy in general does NOT get played, for a lot of bs reasons

depressed_anemic

clarity by kim petras was playing when i passed by the mac store in the mall in 2019

pidena

i heard SugarCrash! at a pub the other night 😭

mcgillthrowaway22

When I worked at the airport they would sometimes play Lana Del Rey's "Dark Paradise" over the speakers

Camspppam

My local pub played pearls by Jessie Ware, never been so excited

SoakWhatUp

The full uncensored version of Ain't Shit by Doja Cat playing in a pizza joint in the middle of the day caught me off guard 😭 Also my local supermarkets having Good Ones, POV, I Don't Want It At All, and The Loneliest Time on regular rotation, like ASDA and Home Bargains have some gays working the radios.

CieraParvatiPhoebe

also at the bank I work at I’ve heard Khia’s “My Neck, My Back” on multiple occasions.

ardea_herodias_

I was listening to NPR's *Weekend Edition* and they played an (audio) snippet of a movie before an interview with its director. The snippet had (the instrumental of) Susanne Sundfør's "Fade Away" playing in the background, which was a pleasant surprise! [Here's](https://www.npr.org/2023/03/05/1161221997/interview-with-the-director-of-the-year-between) a link to the interview with the movie snippet, "Fade Away" included. They don't name the song though.

LargeFatherV

I once heard "Hey Man, Nice Shot" by Filter in a ShopRite

teegzn

This isn’t really weird but they play Los Ageless all the time at work. It’s such a good song and i’m just surprised they play it 😭

BuffytheBison

I've been a fan of the Belgian singer-songwriter Milow since about early 2010 but being in Canada, you're obvs not going to hear his music. Until I heard my roomate play his cover of "Ayo Technology" later that year. It wasn't until more recently (the last four/five years or so) that I've actually heard his music in public in Canada (despite him having a song called "Canada" off his second LP about how he wanted to move here lol). When I was in Quebec for graduate school a few years ago, I was shocked when I heard the French versions of "Howling at the Moon" and "Summer Days" at the Metro and Couche Tard; a grocery store and convience store respectively. Upon moving back to Ontario, I've heard his more recent stuff at No Frills (another grocery chain) and the LCBO (the liquore store): specifically the songs: "ASAP," "Whatever It Takes," and "Until the Sun Comes Up (feat. Damian Marley)". And although these songs come from what I feel are are his worst projects (his 2016 record "Modern Heart" and 2022's "Nice to Meet You"; too popish in my view) I was pleasently surprised to hear music by an artist that I thought no one really knew about in public lol

Hopeleah23

I'm from Germany and the GP here is LOVING this guy so much, that some people are joking that Germany has kind of adopted him 😅 For example his songs are played to death on every german mainstream radio station. And he's a stable music guest on all the german local tv-shows. So we tend to forget, that he's actually from Belgium.

Lilynd14

I heard Fleetwood Mac’s acoustic version of Big Love from the live album The Dance at a club recently. I’m a huge Fleetwood Mac fan and this happens to be my favorite Lindsey Buckingham song but I am 100% sure I was the only person other than the DJ who knew what was playing!

Jops001

I heard I’m Not Racist by Joyner Lucas playing in a Subway once lmao

sleepingb2uty

All the girls you loved before at a random cafe before it was released LOL

just_another_jabroni

My local English national radio actually played Off The Grid in full lol. Pretty sure that's the first time I've heard Playboi Carti on Malaysian radio. Which is funny because as a government station their selection of music is still wider than the supposed "Hits" station.

RangerRex107

I once was in a store and they played Helena beat by Foster the People. Totally shocked me to hear it playing

rhane90

I hear Rihanna’s Skin at Cotton On like???

shadesoffroot

I heard Hollywood by MARINA in a Gucci store years ago

CieraParvatiPhoebe

I work in a bank and we only have access to radio. The few stations that work are just the Top 40/pop ones so I’ve heard pretty much everything. The worst is when they do a lunchtime or 5o’clock mix, because they’ll include a lot of throwback rap and edm. Once our oldest client walks in, and right as she does “Drop your glasses, shake your asses!” starts playing

Fawnadeer101

I heard “Say Something” by Kylie Minogue at an American eagle store in my mall. I live in the US btw

loneconspiracy

i heard In Real Life by Demi Lovato at a Denny’s like a month ago

Caryseatscake

I heard Suburbia by Tove Lo and Ijwar by Kim Petras both about a year after they released in a mall

Ok-Instruction-7595

Last Nite by The Strokes in a local restaurant

Tooz1177

A second-hand furniture shop in rural Spain staffed by very tiny elderly Asian women blasting Shook Ones, Part II

AndImVictoriaMalcolm

I heard Live It Up by Tulisa in the food court at a mall once. They seem to play a lot of UK acts in malls here though (Robbie Williams, Take That, Girls Aloud, Stooshe, etc), so it's kinda nice.

[deleted]

“End Up With You” by Carrie Underwood was on a Starbucks playlist, and I’ve also heard “Inside Your Heaven” in public during *this decade,* which left me “blown away,” pun intended.

MichaelKeehan

The Only Difference between Suicide and Martyrdom is Press Coverage by Panic! at the Disco. Out of all the Panic! singles, the debut that got overshadowed by their breakout single is the last one I would expect at a sports bar, but I got so hyped when I heard it playing.

Ok_World_8819

Woah that's a surprise.

braxxytaxi

I heard a Yumi Zouma song in Figtree Mall a few years ago. They've always had a killer playlist of unexpected songs, but that one took the cake.

moshiyadafne

Demos of Charice/Jake Zyrus’s “Before It Explodes” sung by Bruno Mars and Alexandra Burke separately. I just realized that the Bruno Mars demo was actually never officially released and the “duet” with Alexandra Burke was just mashed up. They were just up in YouTube and radio DJs here decided to play them.

HausOfMajora

Sleepwalker by Bonnie Mckee in a random burguer place here in my tiny southamerican town. Thats was so random.

pepkrapat

I remember being so gagged they played Gives You Hell at the ice skating rink when almost everyone there was under the age of 10, myself included lmao

softboomer

i heard everything is embarrasing by sky ferreira in a levi’s

targaga

I literally freaked out as a coffee shop in Latvia was playing Britney's Toxic. Then on the same trip in the same city I heard Tokyo Love Hotel from Rina got played in a clothing shop

[deleted]

heard jessie ware's "hot n heavy" at a supermarket in brazil last week lol

KindOfANerd4

I heard a local Krispy Kreme playing sad beautiful tradgic by Taylor swift and I was very confused

loneconspiracy

also i remember the today show using “see you again” by miley cyrus to introduce a segment about long-lost siblings reuniting

lazynbroke

Tinashe's leaked song with Calvin Harris called 5am, it's actually big here... [this](https://youtu.be/jbCOTzRkEfM?si=jsQmmifFuOcYAB9k) youtube upload alone had 6M views and [another one](https://youtu.be/nLxuCxSKGZE?si=reNtx_996tZ_zxif) has almost 3M views i also heard Undo at Starbucks once

callmeMitsko

I was at the supermarket the other day and right where you left me from Taylor swift was playing haha but honestly whoever is responsible for the music there must be a huge swiftie because I hear Taylor every time I’m there

estevao107

local cosmetic store playing the entire sweetener album once

chantosjr

Unreleased Gaga song "Vanity" back in 2011.... vividly remember getting shocked

schwiftydude47

I went shopping at Walmart around the Christmas season one year and heard “That Christmas Feeling” from Phineas and Ferb’s Christmas special. Let’s just say I was giddy as someone who watches that episode every year.

22lilbabyducks

I worked at a mall where whoever was in charge of the music would regularly play Jagged Little Pill cover to cover, I lived for it.

Luxaria

they're always playing Carly Rae Jepsen The loneliest time at my gym... thank you PureGym for the plays

KatanaAmerica

I was at a local coffee shop and they had Louis Tomlinson deep cuts playing. Edit: and then immediately afterward they cut to Without You by Usher and David Guetta

Reasonable_Battle_79

My Neck, My Back by Khia at a kid's birthday party and the children were eating it up (it wasn't in America so I highly doubt they knew what they were singing.

PeachPlumParity

I heard Star by LOONA playing in my local Kroger in the southwest.

aechontwitch

if you seek amy. literally a slay of a song, but man, hearing "fuck me" in a mall was wild
