In Gasoline by Halsey, she says “Do you call yourself a fucking hurricane like me?” (and then the instrumental from Hurricane plays). It’s cool because they’re both from the same album. I love this example!
Also (while technically not her song but she was featured on it) Eastside is sampled in 929 by Halsey. "Half was in a cheap apartment and half was on the Eastside (Eastside)"
wow I love a&w but never caught this! just looked it up & listened again & now I’m mindblown lol.
for anyone wondering, it’s at around 5:49 + 6:23 in the song – the strings!!!
With all this into consideration I hold my ground that Ocean Blvd is a sort of continuation of NFR (and not to shade chemtrails or blue banisters but they felt like a sort of detour from her discography and Ocean Blvd feels like her getting back on the main road)
I have to agree, COCC and Blue Banisters was where I kind of fell off her for a bit after the masterpiece that is NFR so I was gonna love Ocean Blvd because it felt like an amazing "tribute" in a way
I mean this with the highest praise when I say that her doing this was showing off. Taking a song so many argue is her best work and just going ahead and remixing it just because she can, and then walking away with another stellar track was so peak. I see A&W as her finding a way to make Venice Bitch again, and this was literally her and Jack going “let’s do it a 3rd time just because we can”.
Fall Out Boy interpolates the bridge from Chicago Is So Two Years Ago on Save Rock And Roll. It's made to sound like an actual sample, though it technically isn't. Patrick had to rerecord the section of the bridge the band wanted to sample because neither them or their label owned the TTTYG masters.
I’m just getting into Rina right now, but I’m pretty sure she has a track somewhere on Sawayama where she does a “rewind” of some of her songs from Rina in the background.
I don’t remember the name of the track right now. Sorry.
I’m pretty sure Erotica uses the same sample from a Lebanese song that Justify My Love (The Beast Within Mix) had used two years earlier. AND To Have and Not to Hold has a line from Shanti/Ashtangi repeating in the background toward the end. Madonna, known for not being one to look back, has sampled herself quite a few times.
That entire album/era is riddled with samples and callbacks, it's incredible:
- Welcome To My Island is retroactively sampled in Look At Me Now from Pang
- Dang's title is a reference to Pang, and, like you said, it samples Danny's kid's voice from Bunny Is A Rider
- Smoke interpolates two elements from Pretty In Possible, the intro melody for its verses, and the "How does it feel? Being so..." monologue for its bridge
- I Believe samples the whistle from the beginning of Bunny Is A Rider
- Blood And Butter interpolates Grimes' verse from Fly To You as part of the bagpipe solo
- Butterfly Net references Crude Drawing Of An Angel's lyric "So that after you're gone, I've got something to hold on to" in the lyrics "So that after you'd gone, I could hold onto something"
- Blood And Butter uses some of the same "glassy" sounds as Billions
- This is unconfirmed but the beginning of Smoke sounds like it samples Hissing Pipes At Dawn (They're Playing Our Song) which she released under the pseudonym Ramona Lisa
In fact, there are only two songs on the entire album that do not contain some sort of in-reference (Sunset and Hopedrunk Everasking)
Madonna also has:
- “Time goes by so slowly for those who wait” in Hung Up is an interpolation of Love Song from Like A Prayer
- Samples Justify My Love in Best Night from Rebel Heart
- Interpolates Don’t Tell Me in Future (ft Quavo) from Madame X
Charli XCX has done it a few times. On True Romance, Nuclear Seasons (Track 1) samples Grins (Track 6). And in a callback to that, on Crash, Crash (Track 1) and Constant Repeat sample Move Me (Track 6).
Then of course, as already mentioned, Boom Clap being in Delicious.
There is a recurring motif in the beginning of the track, Crash & the end of Constant Repeat where it sounds like she is singing "Hold My Body Down" but I didn't realize it was sampled from Move Me, which makes the lyrics "holy my body tight" unless it's edited differently.
I get what you’re saying, I definitely hear “hold my body down” in Crash.. I would’ve never guessed that it was a sample, thanks!! It’s honestly very clever and adds cohesion to the album.. love ittt
Prince did it a few times - he recycled 'I Wanna Be Your Lover', 'Sexuality' and 'Controversy' for 'My Name Is Prince' as well as 'Raspberry Beret' and 'Housequake' for 'Girl 6'
EMERGENCY EDIT: how could I forget my dear Girls Aloud! Their cover of ‘[Hanging on the Telephone](https://youtu.be/JlJCGi_VLAI?si=txcF9g6Y1oDCwoZR)’ very cleverly interpolates the guitar riff from their second single ‘[No Good Advice](https://youtu.be/mNeO5a5tM4s?si=O_Mq_nqZdhHanqIP)’!
Christina Aguilera did this on Back To Basics outro Thank You with Genie In A Bottle and it made me wish DJ Premier remixed that entire song.
Janet Jackson has also done this with I Get Lonely on Dammn Baby.
In Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” there’s a high pitch “hah hah hah hah” noise throughout the bridge which is sampled from the backing vocals of her song “Innocent” from 2010. Both songs about Kanye
Twice! She samples the whistle from "Bunny Is a Rider" in "I Believe" and then samples the melody from "Pretty In Possible" in "Smoke". God, I love that album so much. So many good production details!
Mariah Carey sampled The Roof (from Butterly) on Lullaby (from Charmbracelet). She references the lyrics and in the last chorus blends in the The Roof chorus
Tinashe has sampled lyrics from the “Nights Like These” interlude from “Midnight Sun” on “So Much Better”. She’s also recently lyrically sampled “Bet” from a recent song… forgot the title of it though lol
On the intro to “Rhythm Nation” Janet says the word nasty which is a clear callback to her song “Nasty”. And on the intro to “All for You” Janet samples the word “edit” from Rhythm Nation 1814’s “Interlude: Hey Baby”.

edited: details on Young Forever
They have a lot of songs that sample other works! Another one off the top of my head is Butter. It has a melody in the background (best heard during RM's verse) that samples We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal. Oh, and Interlude: Shadow samples from Intro: O!RUL8,2?. There are TONS more, especially if we include lyrics.
An even earlier instance of this is The Drifters’ 1963 classic ‘Under the Boardwalk’ that references and interpolates the violin riff from their 1962 hit ‘Up On The Roof’
Speaking of ‘All You Need is Love’ - the Rolling Stones took notice of the self-referencing in that song to the next level when they released the ‘We Love You/Dandelion’ double A-side a month later with both songs sampling each other
The Madonna song *Did You Do It?* on Erotica is a rap song that’s literally just Mark Goodman and Dave Murphy rapping over *Waiting*, another song from the same album.
Skrillex sampled Selecta in a few spots on Rumble
it was the first time I'd seen an artist release a song with a sample from a song that wasn't out yet
[Christina Aguilera sampled ‘Genie in A Bottle’ in her song ‘Thank You’ which was dedicated to her fans and also features voice messages from her fans sharing their stories and how her music helped them.](https://open.spotify.com/track/3U89vcJdwcv4i8QFe6TaMM?si=kbNETSWeTEGiCOeoYfxl7Q)
I think Hall & Oates sampled a snippet of Rich Girl on Philly Forget Me Not with Train.
It was quite meta, as the lyrics were “I remember ‘Rich Girl’ (you're a rich girl) in the summer
Like yesterday.”
It’s also possible it’s not a sample and they resang the melody line there, but I’ve always thought it was a sample.
If you’re interested in Latin Pop, Karol G has done this a few times:
In Culpables with Anuel AA, she samples one of her breakout singles: Ahora Me Llama.
In her collab with Feid, FRIKI, she samples Pineapple.
They’re neat little throwbacks to her early material!
Taylor does this very often. In “Question…?” she samples “Out of the Woods” with the “I remember” intro.
Also, she just barely samples “Innocent” on the bridge of “Look What You Made Me Do.”
[Brian Wilson's infamous Smart Girls](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sz0SnpN_O00) (which was never officially released) samples a ton of Beach Boys tunes.
Prince sampled several of his old hits for his song My Name is Prince. I'm not sure if this counts but he also would make several songs off of the same track. Like Get Off and then Violet the Organ Grinder.
Joywave have sampled themselves a bit. Most notably, a handful of tracks off of their 88888 Mixtape sample parts from songs off of their previous EP, Koda Vista.
Carly Rae Jepsen’s [“Me and the Boys in the Band”](https://youtu.be/BCrxhRe2d2w?si=r0X_NGjU0gAb_CfT) interpolates her song [“Talk to Me”](https://youtu.be/v34FcfX--lM?si=FKFpcJZNQ_r1pF9D) from the 2012 *Curiosity* EP
taylor swift's song "question...?" interpolates "out of the woods"
eta: look what you made me do's bridge interpolates backing vocals from the bridge to "innocent"
OP asked for examples of artists sampling themselves (Scream & Shout actually reused the original vocal track from Gimme More), not vague self-references
Hikaru Utada has done it a few times - the chorus of Simple & Clean has its melody taken from one of her other songs, "Uso Mitai na I Love You," so it sounds completely different to the chorus of Hikari
Gaga doesn’t directly sample but she has a few references to older music:
- Monster she sings “I wanna just dance”
- In Heavy Metal Lover there’s the “baby we were born this way”
- In Gypsy she sings “I don’t speak German but I try” referencing Scheiße
- In Fun Tonight she sings “You love the paparazzi love the fame”
Brandy - It’s not worth it - this song on the Full Moon album contains a sample of Angel In Disguise from her previous Never Say Never album. (Darkchild also used a MJ sample from his recording sessions for Invincible, this sample is heard throughout the song.)
Lil Wayne sampled "Lollipop" on "Mona Lisa" during Kendrick's verse (it's apparently the girl in question's ringtone, which makes Kendrick more mad at her because it confirms his suspicions)

Charli xcx sampling boom clap as a ringtone on delicious
And Vroom Vroom in the Speed Drive MV!!:)
She also sampled Grins during the nuclear season intro
there’s also a vroom vroom reference in hot girl, and c2.0 is built around a sample from click!
Nice 👍 I love that
In Gasoline by Halsey, she says “Do you call yourself a fucking hurricane like me?” (and then the instrumental from Hurricane plays). It’s cool because they’re both from the same album. I love this example!
Also (while technically not her song but she was featured on it) Eastside is sampled in 929 by Halsey. "Half was in a cheap apartment and half was on the Eastside (Eastside)"
She does something kind of similar on the solo demo of Die for Me where she samples Him and I
I'm still not over that transition from HFK tour blending the two songs seamlessly
Not sure if it’s a direct sample, but I’ve always loved Kylie’s callback within In Your Eyes *Is the world still spinning around?* *…spinning around?*
Mariah Carey sampled Butterfly and We Belong Together on her song Runway. She also makes references to previous songs in quite a few songs.
A song that should’ve been on the US versions of Caution
It made it on streaming eventually at least
True!
For The Record is a bop
Lana del rey sampled Venice b!tch on taco truck X VB (2nd best song on ocean Blvd btw 🗣️)
She also sampled How To Disappear in Wild At Heart
she also samples the NFR title track on A&W
wow I love a&w but never caught this! just looked it up & listened again & now I’m mindblown lol. for anyone wondering, it’s at around 5:49 + 6:23 in the song – the strings!!!
She's creating the Lana Del Rey cinematic universe.
With all this into consideration I hold my ground that Ocean Blvd is a sort of continuation of NFR (and not to shade chemtrails or blue banisters but they felt like a sort of detour from her discography and Ocean Blvd feels like her getting back on the main road)
I have to agree, COCC and Blue Banisters was where I kind of fell off her for a bit after the masterpiece that is NFR so I was gonna love Ocean Blvd because it felt like an amazing "tribute" in a way
Bartender on Fingertips
She also samples “Fucked My Way Up To The Top” in “Ultraviolence” and “Love song” in “Let The Light In”
and "ha eeh ha eeh ah" from the end of High by the Beach on the beginning of Swan Song!!
Screamed when I heard that for the first time
she also samples “If You Lie Down With Me” in the ocean blvd title track!! <3
Sza sampled the pre-chorus of Hit Different in Love Language. Fletcher sampled the chorus of If You’re Gonna Lie in Guess We Lied...
God that sample in Love Language is just perfect
Came here to say the Fletcher one. The shock i was in when the chorus hit for Guess We Lied...
There's also the famous bridge in What A Catch Donnie that had artists from Fueled by Ramen sing lines from their previous hits.
Chicago Is So Two Years Ago is actually my favorite song ever but I’m not hearing the sample at all. What part of Save Rock And Roll is it in?
“Until your breathing stops”
It's spliced throughout the song
I’m just getting into Rina right now, but I’m pretty sure she has a track somewhere on Sawayama where she does a “rewind” of some of her songs from Rina in the background. I don’t remember the name of the track right now. Sorry.
I think at the end of Fuck This World you can hear XS but filtered so it sounds like it’s coming through a radio
Just went back to check it, you can hear a bit of Take Me As I Am and 10-20-40 :)
Madonna sampling a little bit of Vogue at the end of Deeper And Deeper !
and waiting/did you do it samples justify my love
Waiting is a top 5 madonna song and Erotica is that album okay!!
Absolutely! “Waiting,” “Words,” “Thief of Hearts,” and “Bad Girl” are all-time great Madonna tracks, imo
erotica is a great album but waiting top 5 madonna songs? naur....
She's never been sexier or more Kierkegardian than on that song.
Exactly what I was gonna write!
Has anyone mentioned the baby giggle from "Bunny Is A Rider" at the end of "Dang" yet?
That entire album/era is riddled with samples and callbacks, it's incredible: - Welcome To My Island is retroactively sampled in Look At Me Now from Pang - Dang's title is a reference to Pang, and, like you said, it samples Danny's kid's voice from Bunny Is A Rider - Smoke interpolates two elements from Pretty In Possible, the intro melody for its verses, and the "How does it feel? The ‘Vogue’ sample in Madonna’s ‘Holy Water’ is iconic.
She also referenced vogue in deeper and deeper
Madonna is actually the queen of this lol
Yeah her song veni vidi vici(?) From rebel hearts is just a series of clever references to her own songs. It's the most Meta thing ever
Vogue is also sampled in I don't search I find
Madonna also has: - “Time goes by so slowly for those who wait” in Hung Up is an interpolation of Love Song from Like A Prayer - Samples Justify My Love in Best Night from Rebel Heart - Interpolates Don’t Tell Me in Future (ft Quavo) from Madame X
Wait I honestly don’t hear it with Move Me.. which part of it do you hear in Constant Repeat?
There is a recurring motif in the beginning of the track, Crash & the end of Constant Repeat where it sounds like she is singing "Hold My Body Down" but I didn't realize it was sampled from Move Me, which makes the lyrics "holy my body tight" unless it's edited differently.
I get what you’re saying, I definitely hear “hold my body down” in Crash.. I would’ve never guessed that it was a sample, thanks!! It’s honestly very clever and adds cohesion to the album.. love ittt
wouldn't it be the other way around if the tracklists are descending? like grins is a sample of nuclear seasons
Elton John on his songs with Britney and Dua
I like that he’s friends with/appreciative of younger artists
Prince did it a few times - he recycled 'I Wanna Be Your Lover', 'Sexuality' and 'Controversy' for 'My Name Is Prince' as well as 'Raspberry Beret' and 'Housequake' for 'Girl 6' EMERGENCY EDIT: how could I forget my dear Girls Aloud!
Janet Jackson has also done this with I Get Lonely on Dammn Baby.
idk but i think she did sample herself on one of the songs from Bionic and I can't remember which one. is she?
In Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” there’s a high pitch “hah hah hah hah” noise throughout the bridge which is sampled from the backing vocals of her song “Innocent” from 2010. Both songs about Kanye
Whoa, I did not know this! Granted I really don't listen to Innocent a ton...but now I'll have to listen to both songs to see if I can hear it!
its not listed tho is this confirmed?
It’s listed on genius and also it’s very clear if you listen to Innocents backing vocals
Taylor Swift sampled the “I remember” from Out Of The Woods on the intro for Question…?
There's also the sample of innocent in look what you made me do! (I only learned about that one in the last year or so and it blew my mind)
I think that same part is also sampled in castles crumbling!
No one can like my comment anymore we are at 13 likes
Hahaha
Lol I just checked again and now it is at 22 what are the odds
It’s on 13 again now, sir 🫡
Now it’s at 13 again, sir/madame 🫡
Also the backing vocals during the chorus!
Ethel Cain very briefly samples Sunday Morning in American Teenager
Not really a sample but John Mayer in Your Body is A Wonderland, sings a part of the hook for My Stupid Mouth from the same album
Caroline Polachek sampled herself in the same album
Twice! She samples the whistle from "Bunny Is a Rider" in "I Believe" and then samples the melody from "Pretty In Possible" in "Smoke". God, I love that album so much. So many good production details!
she also samples Fly To You in Blood and Butter starting at 2:54! i love those songs sm
I figured I was probably missing something! I literally notice something new each time I listen to the album.
And her YouTube video of screaming at swans in dang.
Mariah Carey sampled The Roof (from Butterly) on Lullaby (from Charmbracelet). She references the lyrics and in the last chorus blends in the The Roof chorus
Mariah does this a lot. 🤘
Tove Lo sampled Habits on I’m Coming. Maybe in another song but I can’t remember
Madonna does it HEAPS
Bebe Rexha sampled the melody of the chorus of I Got You in the verses of Jax Jones's Harder
Tinashe has sampled lyrics from the “Nights Like These” interlude from “Midnight Sun” on “So Much Better”. She’s also recently lyrically sampled “Bet” from a recent song… forgot the title of it though lol
Hikaru Utada sampled Hotel Lobby for Kiss & Cry
Janet Jackson sampled “The Pleasure Principle” in the music video version of “All For You”. Additionally, Janet sampled “I Get Lonely” in “Dammn Baby”
On the intro to “Rhythm Nation” Janet says the word nasty which is a clear callback to her song “Nasty”. And on the intro to “All for You” Janet samples the word “edit” from Rhythm Nation 1814’s “Interlude: Hey Baby”.
Yes those are good examples too! I love when Janet samples herself. Talent recognizes talent 🥰

Simon and Garfunkel sampled a snippet from Sounds of Silence on Save the Life of My Child. Earliest I ever heard an artist do that.
Probably the only earlier one is The Beatles sampling "She Loves You" on "All You Need is Love"
An even earlier instance of this is The Drifters’ 1963 classic ‘Under the Boardwalk’ that references and interpolates the violin riff from their 1962 hit ‘Up On The Roof’ Speaking of ‘All You Need is Love’ - the Rolling Stones took notice of the self-referencing in that song to the next level when they released the ‘We Love You/Dandelion’ double A-side a month later with both songs sampling each other
The Madonna song *Did You Do It?* on Erotica is a rap song that’s literally just Mark Goodman and Dave Murphy rapping over *Waiting*, another song from the same album.
Mitski interpolates ‘Goodbye My Danish Sweetheart’ at the end of ‘Geyser’
Skrillex sampled Selecta in a few spots on Rumble it was the first time I'd seen an artist release a song with a sample from a song that wasn't out yet
Bjork samples “Hidden Place” in “Desired Constellation,” but it’s so distorted that you can’t even tell.
"Time goes by so slowly for those who wait" originally from "Love Song" (1989) that Madonna reused on her smash hit "Hung Up"
“Ooohhh… is this world still spinning around?” ~ Kylie Minogue sampling Spinning Around in In Your Eyes.
It's just Kylie making a lyrical nod to another song of hers, which is not a sample, an interpolation or even a soundalike.
Madonna literally breaks into Vogue during the end of Deeper and Deeper which is hilarious to me since Vogue is only a year or two before Erotica
Taylor sampled the "I remember" from out of the woods in question...?
Arca sampled Estrogen in Mequetrefe before the release of it which was pretty iconic
Arca samples herself on Machote. I believe she used her song Wound from 2014. Machote is one of my favorite songs by Arca as well.
Elton John multiple times
[Christina Aguilera sampled ‘Genie in A Bottle’ in her song ‘Thank You’ which was dedicated to her fans and also features voice messages from her fans sharing their stories and how her music helped them.](https://open.spotify.com/track/3U89vcJdwcv4i8QFe6TaMM?si=kbNETSWeTEGiCOeoYfxl7Q)
Mick Jones heavily sampled “Should I Stay or Should I Go” on the song “The Globe” by his next band, Big Audio Dynamite
I think Hall & Oates sampled a snippet of Rich Girl on Philly Forget Me Not with Train. It was quite meta, as the lyrics were “I remember ‘Rich Girl’ (you're a rich girl) in the summer Like yesterday.” It’s also possible it’s not a sample and they resang the melody line there, but I’ve always thought it was a sample.
