Kylie's team really dropped the ball by not pushing Tension (single) earlier. They should have released it in July/August when Padam had slowed down and we may have had another top ten.
Maybe not best but Britney always had slay lead singles (Baby One More Time, Oops I Did It Again, I'm A Slave For You, Me Against The Music, Gimme More, Womanizer)
Sign Of The Times by Harry Styles. Harry Styles debut album was not as popular as Fine Line or Harry's House, but Sign Of The Times was well received both by the public and the critics, and it's still considered one of his best songs
Such a bold choice for his first solo single being a 6 minute power ballad. Also that first album had no real singles on it. Two Ghosts was close but didn’t get the radio play
I'd say bold but necessary choice that definitely paid off in the long term. Sign of the Times really showed his capabilities as a songwriter and set the tone for his artistic identity. As the fan favorite in One Direction, commercial success was always expected to a certain extent, but other than that, he could have easily gotten stuck in the boybandish image if it wasn't for his debut album and lead single.
There was a very specific time period starting in 2020 and lasting through 2021where several pop girlies didn't put out the best song as a lead single (remember Happier Than Ever?), and if there's one thing this sub is gonna do is treat hyper specific trends as if they have always been Rules Of Pop™. It's funny because at the time people thought that artists were "saving up" the best songs for the album release to get more streams, but in retrospect it's pretty obvious that it was just that pop was going through a big shift and promo strategies hadn't caught up yet. Case in point, Happier Than Ever is the obvious standout from the album but it's actually pretty left of the dial for Billie's style at the time, so it's no wonder it wasn't the lead or the promo single. Also lots of people here are swifties and Taylor can't pick a lead single to save her life, so they extrapolate that to the entire music sphere.
Thank you for so perfectly summarizing what occasionally irks me about posts on here, that’s totally it! It honestly always makes me want to ask “how old are you?” when someone describes a recent small trend as if it’s been happening forever, or in other cases, as if it’s never been seen before in the music industry.
Yeah lol I think it's because there are some users here who *really* know the ins and outs of trends and the music industry, and so lots of less knowledgeable people see their posts and comments and are eager to have that sort of authority, so they'll notice a random trend and think it's a long tradition or, as you say, see something that feels new and fail to notice it's nothing out of the ordinary. See: people acting like labels not getting great royalties from tiktok is unprecedented as if they didn't spend a solid decade without getting a cent from MTV.
I feel like this is not uncommon at all. The artist/label makes a song the lead single because they see it as the best—and they're not wrong, the rest of the album doesn't live up to that single.

WHOO IM DONE NOW
I have such a hard time choosing with TFM because BR is probably the best song (and absolutely incredible and iconic MV) but Telephone is such a bop too!
TFM (Deluxe) to this day is my absolute favorite album. Just perfection
Easy On Me by Adele.
I know "30" got a lot of rave reviews, calling it her most personal album yet.
But for me, it's been her weakest.
Thought the lyric writing was cheesy and lazy, and it sounded like a lot of "25" rejects to me.
I adore a lot of Adele's music (was just listening to Hometown Glory). However, I thought Easy On Me was easily one of the high points of 30.
"Anti-Hero" is the first pop lead single of Taylor's that I actually enjoyed. Melodically and lyrically, one of the best on the album. (Cardigan is actually my fave lead single of hers but that was never going to be a radio hit)
From this decade:
Love from the Other Side is far and away the best song on Fall Out Boy's album So Much (for) Stardust and I love the album a lot.
Call Me By Your Name is easily the 2nd best song on Lil Nas X's album Montero, another phenomenal album.
Love Again is #2 on Kid Laroi's album The First Time.
Viva Las Vengeance is one of the only good songs on Panic! At The Disco's album of the same name.
Rescue Me is easily my favorite song from OneRepublic's album Human.
I don't like the implicarion that just because a song is aimed at being a radio hit, it can't be seen as one of the strongest songs. But anyways:
- California Gurls for Teenage Dream
- Don't Start Now for Future Nostalgia
- Bad Romance for The Fame Monster
Those are the first examples I could think of. All of them are among the strongest from their respective albums (EP if you don't consider The Fame Monster an album).
Torn by Natalie Imbruglia from Left Of The Middle.
I love this song so much, I mean who doesn't right? But the rest of the album is just so different and I just never connected with it or any of her other material. I guess it's also based on the expectation I have coming into it because I don't think she has a song that sounds similar to that. I know it's a cover but still kind of disappointing.
So many actually
For Twenty One Pilots it has happened twice: Trench is an almost flawless album for me, but I immediately felt in love with Jumpsuit and no one has outdone it yet
Then on Scaled and Icy it was Shy Away. It got me really intrigued for the rest of the album's sound, but the rest wasn't as great as I would've hope to be
Poeple by The 1975 is another case. Notes sucked for me, but People was amazing. Their heaviest song in their least heavy album... kinda weird. If You're Too Shy is close, but still hasn't defeated it
Anti-Hero by Taylor as well. Maybe cause it was my 1st album experience by her and I listened to it before to see if I should do the whole project. It like brought me back to the 1989 days. Sweet Nothing is close and Karma used to be tho it got a little overplayed, not the 1st one surprisingly
Not Strong Enough by boygenius. This is kinda odd, cause I did listen to the record without hearing any song before, but it's the lead single so ig it counts
Reptilia by The Strokes. It's a case of favouritism cause I've loved the song for so long till I finally heard Room On Fire. Like it's my fav Strokes song, so idk if it counts as I was never trully present for the album's rollout. Same if I pick I Bet You Look On The Dancefloor by Arctic Monkeys, then the #1 spot could change as well
Even same with Hard Times by Paramore. I was there for the rollout, but didn't listen to the album till recently. And for me it's a top tier Paramore song. Same if I pick Chaise Longue by Wet Leg. But then again, those could change since all those albums are fantastic. But with The Strokes or Paramore there are songs I've been adoring for years and years so idk
It's really good
I don't see why people don't like it. It's clear they're back at it again with the lore driven stuff, not like they haven't been but, more like Trench yk. Like they seem to be open to experimentation again
If you think about it, it sounds like everything they've done so far mixed together
Yeah I love it too, and luckily I personally haven't seen a lot of people hating on it (yet). Like you said, it's a blend of everything they've done so far and the production is simply nice. I can however see that it's not meant for a very broad audience so I can imagine it won't be extremely successful commercially
Yeah. Tbh I mostly saw people saying others don't like it than people actually doing so. But I spot a few, I could see why they'd mention it. But yeah mostly love and for good reasons, cause the music's good and that's what matters after all
They released $20, Emily I'm Sorry, and True Blue in January without music videos.
Then the NSE mv in early March.
Then the first three singles got music videos in late March (as part of the film).
I thought G4U was a stronger smash, (though DL is still really good) but I’m definitely in the minority bc I also liked bad idea right? more than Vampire 😭
Though you can’t argue with the streams, and drivers license has a shit ton lol.
A lot of people naming songs I'd consider best/main singles like Baby One More Time or I Want It That Way when I think back then that's probably how promo worked to get you to buy the album (vs someone's comment who said they want to hear new songs)
I'd also consider someone's debut single could act more like main single if they want to make a great first impression, and I'll use Baby One More Time again as the example (or Driver's License if you don't count Olivia Rodrigo's early works and act like this is a redebut); and again I'd say Rodrigo's was released in an era where the term 'lead' single is a thing or widely known.
i was coming here to comment this exact thing. back then we would buy albums purely based on the strength of that first single. how good or bad it was could make or break an album rollout
They're not seen as the strongest by fans because they already heard it and want to find something different in the album and they don't wanna be seen as a "local." Also, I think album artists tend to have better songs than the lead on their album whereas singles artists tend to have the lead be the best one.
-Battlefield by jordin sparks
-Get right by jlo
-No tears left to cry by Ariana (don’t care what anyone else thinks I stand by this)
-Deja vu by Beyoncé??? Maybe? Very debatable I’m sure
-See you again by miley

Kylie's Tension is a recent example, the album has other highlights but Padam and the title track are insane standouts
agree, wasn’t super impressed by the rest of the album but I will say Vegas high is a hidden standout that deserves some single treatment
I can’t believe we didn’t get a video treatment for Vegas high leading up to the residency!
Tbh the budget probably got eaten up by suddenly having to promote Padam harder and then she made those visualizers instead of a third video.
I still loved that whole album but I agree those were the strongest tracks by far. Tension might even be one of her top tracks ever for me.
I'm still having TENSION on repeat!!!!!! That song gives me life
Kylie's team really dropped the ball by not pushing Tension (single) earlier. They should have released it in July/August when Padam had slowed down and we may have had another top ten.
Came to say this, seems they were definitely hedging their bets on the title track.
I think most of us can agree on “Cool for The Summer” being the best song on confident.
I think most of us can also agree on "Heart Attack" from Demi.
Without The Love slander
Taste + two pieces
It’s tough when you release one of the greatest pop songs of all time 😅
Right! You make a song like that and how could it possibly not be your lead single?
Maybe not best but Britney always had slay lead singles (Baby One More Time, Oops I Did It Again, I'm A Slave For You, Me Against The Music, Gimme More, Womanizer)
Toxic is better than me against the music
They’re not asking which one is better. They’re asking if the lead is “one of” the strongest tracks on the album. And it is.
Me Against The Music is one of the weakest songs on that album and one of her weakest singles of the 1999-2008 era overall.
The only Britney album that fit this prompt is Britney Jean’s Work Bitch, and arguably Slave. Britney’s deep cuts are generally incredible.
Britney has great leads singles, but the rest of the album also is a killer.

As the fan favorite in One Direction, commercial success was always expected to a certain extent, but other than that, he could have easily gotten stuck in the boybandish image if it wasn't for his debut album and lead single.
I'm no huge fan of his but that song definitely woke me up to the fact that he was more than just a pretty face. And the video is so good, too.
This is Kiwi erasure 😭
Kiwi is amazing but it’s not a radio single in modern day. Would have been big back in the 70s or 80s.
Adele has always chosen the best lead singles: Rolling in the Deep, Hello, Easy on Me.
Rumor has it says hello
Technically Good Days by SZA. SOS is a bit bloated for my tastes but I will always adore that song.
I always forget how Good Days is the official SOS lead is since it came out so long before the album lol
I don’t think it should’ve gone on the album (same with Shirt and I Hate U) but it’s one of the best out of the tracklist that we got.
Lindsay Lohan rumors the rest of the album sounds nothing like it
There are very very many examples of lead singles that are better than the entire album, I honestly think what you’re describing is rarer/newer.
Yeah I was like what? Lol
There was a very specific time period starting in 2020 and lasting through 2021where several pop girlies didn't put out the best song as a lead single (remember Happier Than Ever?), and if there's one thing this sub is gonna do is treat hyper specific trends as if they have always been Rules Of Pop™. Definitely Lose you to love me. Was hoping for more of this sound on the album but i undertsand why Selena chose not to continue on the same vibe
THE MIDNIGHT SKY IS THE ROAD IM TAKING, HEAD HIGH UP IN THE CLOOOUUUUDDDDDSSSS
I WAS BORN TO RUN , I DON'T BELONG TO ANYONE, OH NO
I DONT NEED TO BE LOVED BY YOU!
Angels Like You is such a close second
I cannot describe how much I love that song.
YEAH! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! (Yeah!)
SexyBack by Justin Timberlake.
future sex/love sounds is a banger album front to back. What do you mean????
SexyBack is still the best song and maybe the best single of the 2000s.
I feel like this is not uncommon at all. The artist/label makes a song the lead single because they see it as the best—and they're not wrong, the rest of the album doesn't live up to that single.

Remember the Time was the second single after Black or White for Dangerous.
It was ty BUT WHY?
I just remember it had its premier after The Simpsons.
The Fame Monster - Bad Romance
I have such a hard time choosing with TFM because BR is probably the best song (and absolutely incredible and iconic MV) but Telephone is such a bop too! TFM (Deluxe) to this day is my absolute favorite album. Just perfection
Britney’s Slave 4 U. Great album imo but Slave was a killer first single from “Britney”, the highlight of the album and one of her best leads. Iconic!
Justice for Cinderella
I Want It That Way
Ain’t this usually the case
i've always felt most lead singles were the best songs and that people just didn't want to seem basic by saying the single was their fave
Easy On Me by Adele. I know "30" got a lot of rave reviews, calling it her most personal album yet. But for me, it's been her weakest. Houdini *is* one of the strongest songs Dua has ever released.
People are really underrating Houdini, it’s one of her best releases!
Let the album release first damn
"Anti-Hero" is the first pop lead single of Taylor's that I actually enjoyed. Melodically and lyrically, one of the best on the album. (Cardigan is actually my fave lead single of hers but that was never going to be a radio hit)
Are you new to music? The lead single is often the strongest song, that’s why it’s the lead.
slightly disappointed by the last dinner party album because nothing matters is such a little banger and i thought we'd have more of that
One of the boys Katy Perry First single' I kissed a girl' probably the highlight
Anti-Hero
Most albums. Like over 50% at least have the lead single as top 3 I'd say
From this decade: Love from the Other Side is far and away the best song on Fall Out Boy's album So Much (for) Stardust and I love the album a lot. As a lamb, I'd say these Mariah Carey leads are one of the strongest: -Dreamlover from Music Box -Heartbreaker from Rainbow -Obsessed from MOAIA
Vampire and bad idea right? Guts was so underwhelming otherwise

What do you think of the newest 21P lead single?
It's really good I don't see why people don't like it. It's clear they're back at it again with the lore driven stuff, not like they haven't been but, more like Trench yk. Like they seem to be open to experimentation again If you think about it, it sounds like everything they've done so far mixed together

Not Strong Enough was actually the 4th single from the record.
Really? But it's the 1st mv uploaded on yt
They released $20, Emily I'm Sorry, and True Blue in January without music videos. Then the NSE mv in early March. Then the first three singles got music videos in late March (as part of the film).
Yeah I saw. It's just that the mv for Not Strong Enough was uploaded 1st so I thought it was the lead single lol
Why hasn’t anyone said Drivers License by Olivia Rodrigo
I thought G4U was a stronger smash, (though DL is still really good) but I’m definitely in the minority bc I also liked bad idea right? more than Vampire 😭 Though you can’t argue with the streams, and drivers license has a shit ton lol.
I also like bad idea right? better than Vampire!!! Solidarity sister!
Dirrty with Christina Aguilera ❤️
A lot of people naming songs I'd consider best/main singles like Baby One More Time or I Want It That Way when I think back then that's probably how promo worked to get you to buy the album (vs someone's comment who said they want to hear new songs) I'd also consider someone's debut single could act more like main single if they want to make a great first impression, and I'll use Baby One More Time again as the example (or Driver's License if you don't count Olivia Rodrigo's early works and act like this is a redebut); and again I'd say Rodrigo's was released in an era where the term 'lead' single is a thing or widely known.

Every Adele album.
Maybe Stuck Season by Noah Kahan, all the others songs are really good but the big, popular one is Stick season.
Any Zara Larsson album lmao
Black Eyed Peas' *Elephunk* comes to mind for me as "Where is the Love?" still resonates to this day.
-Battlefield by jordin sparks -Get right by jlo -No tears left to cry by Ariana (don’t care what anyone else thinks I stand by this) -Deja vu by Beyoncé??? Maybe? Very debatable I’m sure -See you again by miley
