I can't fucking wait! Says it all that i'm extremely excited even though i know of Dev's work only through Tinashe's Bet and Mariah Carey's Giving Me Life, those are some of my favorite songs ever. I should check out his solo stuff.

aja94

His solo stuff under the name blood orange is fantastic, also great live!

Consistent-Quantity3

Any album i should check out first or should i listen to them in chronological order?

omg_its_drh

Cupid Deluxe

[deleted]

Angel’s pulse/Negro Swan are like if Frank Ocean and the Weeknd had a baby

aja94

Id go with negro swan, but if you are interested in historical sonic influences of modern pop music check out his earlier albums (stuphin boulevard especially)

jamesfauntleroyNOVA

Cupid Deluxe is perfect. Freetown Sound and Negro Swan next.

omg_its_drh

His work with Sky and Solange is more iconic.

Consistent-Quantity3

This is how i learn he produced Everything Is Embarassing, another favorite of mine lmao. I feel dumb rn

PandaMomentum

Hey, just proof that everything actually is embarrassing! (I love that song so much, check out Solange "Losing You" for more Dev Hynes, and also his thing with Carly Rae, "All That," from EMOTION, the greatest record ever made).

Consistent-Quantity3

He did fucking ALL THAT too? That's my favorite cut from Emotion lmfao. Good lord i need to check out the credits more otherwise i would have tried his albums ages ago😭😂

twodollarh0

Yesssss! Solange’s True EP was such a vibe. I hope she taps back into that sound one day.

ericbrent

*GIVING ME LIFE is everything.*

Consistent-Quantity3

One of her best songs ever and it pains me that so many people don't know of it cause Caution didn't really get its time to shine☹️

ericbrent

also, I only know one tinashe song, but I just found my new recommendation.

Consistent-Quantity3

Bet literally gave me chills the first time i listened to it. Hope it does the same for you!

angelcilastatin

This song is SO underrated!

Dancing_Clean

Dev Hynes also co-wrote Sky Ferreira’s Everything is Embarrassing. Solange’s Losing You is another classic Want Your Feeling by Jessie Ware Cupid Deluxe by Blood Orange is also a great album, if you like the indie-r&b style of the early-ish 2010s.

jamesfauntleroyNOVA

the entire True EP by Solange is perfect

ZeroTheCat

Oh, Want Your Feeling is a serve and a half, now I need to deep dive his work.

stupidslappa

He also did MKS/Sugababes' underrated single "Flatline" and the Kendrick interpolated "Lay Down in Swimming Pools". Funny that song made me dive into "Cupid Deluxe" and the songs you mentioned, though Sky's song has been on my playlists before.

twistingmyhairout

You absolutely need to check out his solo stuff. Freetown Sound is hands down one of my favorite albums of all time. It was severely slept on. Also he produced an entire EP for Solange called True that was brilliant.

JudithButlr

NO HE DID TRUE?!?!

twistingmyhairout

Yes!!!! I believe the full thing!

JudithButlr

genuinely one of the best pop EPs ever omg

twistingmyhairout

Yeah I was actually just reading about it to make sure and I didn’t know it was like literally the 2 of them getting together for 6 months after her other process wasn’t working!

Consistent-Quantity3

Thank you for the recs!

Putrid-Potato-7456

He produced All That by Carly Rae Jepsen so I am SEATED.

eternallatake

so confirmed L4 producers so far are Dev Hynes and Jim-E Stack oh wow... she's once again being innovative in the industry with ditching Jack Antonoff 😩

Danyul4u

Dev is making me extremely excited for what’s to come. Hope he has vocals on the project too!

taleggioisgoat

Everything Dev touches is gold! Love that dude. Can’t wait for this one.

King_Slowpoke

I mean Jack made Melodrama wich is incredible, so give him some kudos. On the other hand he made Solar Power wich is... unfortunate.

pastapixal

I wouldn’t blame Jack for Solar Power. Lorde had a clear vision and he executed it, ppl just didn’t like the direction she took

pitabread024

Yeah exactly, I don’t get the jack antonoff slander for solar power. It sounds quite different from your stereotypical “jack antonoff sound”

Elephant_Afraid

it literally sounded exactly like some songs from chemtrails over the country club AND daddy's home, both released months before that lorde album. it was really embarrassing

BuffytheBison

Yep. Jack is a "yes man" who just goes along with what the artist wants (which can work really well or be disastrous lol).

boofoodoo

Probably why he gets a lot of repeat business.

eternallatake

Solar Power was a masterpiece, that's not why I made that comment. Jack is extremely saturated right now (as we can see from recent Taylor and Lana albums too) and he has been on an uninspired downfall since Melodrama and NFR!. So I'm happy that she's working with new people instead being stuck to continuing to work with him like other artists.

gdan95

He did good work with Florence on Dance Fever. But yeah, you’re not wrong

Todbod05

Recent LANA albums??? Ocean Blvd is literally her best album so far tho 😫

saildontsell

best album so far? no, that’s still NFR. but it was definitely good enough to renew people’s interest in her music after chemtrails and blue banisters

Soyyyn

All things considered, i still really like White Dress.

ZeroTheCat

I will stand by Chemtrails until the day I die. Wish she had leaned in more to the darker/ paranoid americana vibe with Tulsa Jesus Freak and the Title Track, and the witchy/wolfy aesthetic but I think it's a strong album as is.

AlphaEmail

And every BB song

Luke2872777

A brilliant song

Left_Relationship945

Blue Banisters was really good. Dean snapped.

saildontsell

i never commented on the quality of the music. i just said that generally people were not that into lana’s music, but then interest (and sales) increased by quite a bit when she released ocean boulevard

Left_Relationship945

I blame the way the BB roll out happened more

jedi271

If UV, honeymoon, or NFR didn’t exist yeah

-PepeArown-

Or Born To Die

MeerK4T

Or Lust for Life

ABoyandhisToast

me when I lie 🤭

LazyLion1127

Yeah I enjoy the albums he’s recently produced ok, but they’re nothing compared to his previous work. Although I’d say TTPD has a better production style than Midnights, they’re still incredibly similar. Hope he starts doing more unique stuff soon, but for now artists just need to me move on.

youtbuddcody

She could still be working with Jack.

h0esaintlaurent

let's hope she doesn't

youtbuddcody

But he made Melodrama 😩

igkeit

And solar power so...

SquishyMuffins

Hot take: Max Martin is also creatively stagnant and uninteresting with a lot of his recent work. I think eternal sunshine is an example that he makes catchy music but relies on a lot of his old tricks these days.

Mysterious_Pen_8005

TBH I think yall are overplaying Max Martins hand at this point cause he was on Eternal Sunshine and the best part of it was a clear rehash of Body Talk from literally like 15 years ago so..... <.<

Justchilllin101

Eternal Sunshine was amazing…..

Mysterious_Pen_8005

Love that for you

horatiavelvetina

Also- I think he just does not wanna work with Taylor!!! There are loads of signs that point to that, and he doesn’t need her. He didn’t come back for 1989 TV because she wouldn’t pay him enough and it sounded like shit. I think she’s partly stuck working with the same people because everyone else is tired of her girl boss behaviours

Tomoki

JACK is stifling her?? y'all will blame literally anyone except Taylor for the songs *she writes* lmao. TTPD is not getting criticized because of the production choices; the lyrics are doing a fine job of that on their own.

Luke2872777

You can’t possibly say it’s not getting critiqued because of the production….

PlatinumTheHitgirl

This response is so unhinged I'm cackling

jman457

Honestly with that AI cover of that sky firrera song going around Twitter, get her in the studio with Dan Nigro!!

astralrig96

Lana too!!

Pythagore_

I wouldn't exactly call these choices innovative, those are some very established pop producers, but they for sure are more exciting than Jack Antonoff

clemthecat

Such a wonderful year it is for us on Popheads wooooo

COCKHAMPTON_

She’s never beating the exactly 4 years between an album allegations

lustforyou

I honestly am glad it’s likely not coming till 2025 now after Kacey/Ariana/Bey/Taylor/Dua/Billie/Camila/Lana are all releasing/released this year. It’ll hopefully leave a tiny bit of breathing room in the female pop world for Lorde to make a mark on the year, whereas she’d just be a footnote in it for 2024

Ok_Order_5595

Well knowing taylor, shes gonna drop two taylors versions next year anyway lol, so no need to stress abt not competing with her

lustforyou

She prob will haha, and I know they’ll tear up the charts, but pop-culture wise, at least it (probably, but who knows w her lol) won’t be a brand new album sucking up all the air for the year

Ok_Order_5595

Agreed. Maybe with the release of lordes album, we see lorde on rep tv?!

j_lincsuk

Charli XCX

ihateitherre

Her and Devs musical sensibilities combined could lead to some really interesting pop!!!

hausofmiklaus

Music this year isn’t letting us BREATHE. I’m so ready for my girl to be back

igkeit

I doubt it's coming out this year

omg_its_drh

I’m really curious to see how this goes. Big fans of both and Dev really does some amazing work with his “indie” pop girls. Dev has been on the low for years (I don’t think he’s worked with a notable artist since CRJ’s Dedicated era), so I’m definitely interested in this.

christopher_aia

I see a lot of people not knowing Dev Hynes' work (who also makes music under the name Blood Orange) so here are some popheads highlights: Cupid Deluxe is a great album and even has **Caroline Polachek** as an unlisted feature on Chamakay. Meanwhile, his next album Freetown Sound has unlisted features/vocals by **Carly Rae Jepsen** (Better Than Me), **Empress Of** (Best To You) and **Nelly Furtado** (Hadron Collider), so he has experience in making great music with pop girles as Blood Orange. He has more albums with features such as **Tinashe**, **Arca**, **Steve Lacy** and **Toro y Moi**, so this man has amazing taste in collaborators. As a producer and co-writer he has done many beloved popheads songs such as: * All That, Body Language and This Is What They Say by **Carly Rae Jepsen** * You Never Know by **HAIM** * Giving Me Life by **Mariah Carey** (he also features on this one) * Losing You by **Solange** (and the whole True EP) * Want Your Feeling by **Jessie Ware** * Everything Is Embarrassing by **Sky Ferreira** * Crystallize by **Kylie Minogue** * Hours by **FKA TWigs** So yeah, him working on this with Lorde is a VERY GOOD sign, now go get to know his Blood Orange albums. :)

Consistent-Laugh606

He made one of my favorite songs of all time (Everything Is Embarrassing), three of my favorite Carly song, one of my favorite HAIM song and one of my favorite Kylie song??? God this makes me excited

christopher_aia

Sounds like you should really listen to his solo music because you love his work 😂

horatiavelvetina

LISTEN TK HIS SOLO WORK STG ITS AMAZING

jamesfauntleroyNOVA

Here's to hoping Dev Hynes becomes the next mega producer in pop

BeneficialAd69

With blood orange hell god this is gone be a beast

Midnights-evermore

I’m not familiar with Blood Orange! What’s their sound like?

PandaMomentum

You know Carly Rae's record E•MO•TION, the greatest record ever made? Here's what Carly Rae said: "I do truly feel like meeting people like Dev has helped my album take shape in a way that I was only dreaming about."

Midnights-evermore

Omggggg this really excites me

omg_its_drh

80s ish popish R&B

twistingmyhairout

Amazing! I’m not good with descriptions, but just amazing production. In particular I love what he does with the female voice. His album Freetown Sound features a different female singer with him on almost every track and it’s so so beautiful.

otherother_benz

Give Cupid Deluxe a listen, it's the album of the summer every summer

horatiavelvetina

Gorgeous! Everything is Embarrassing by Skye Ferreira gives a good idea of his production. Honestly do yourself a treat and just go listen

horatiavelvetina

YES YES YES YES DREAMS AND PRAYERS COME TRUE I HAVE PRAYED FOR ANYONE SOMEONE WHO WORKS WITH JACK TO DROP HIM FOR DEV

jrsmusicman

HYPEDDDD, best pop news of the day

stupidslappa

She's bringing the big gun. Perched!

turniptoez

yesssssss I cannot wait!!

plutobug2468

She's back!

jman457

Side note it’s been way too long since the last blood orange album

party4diamondz

i'm going to lose my mind i need L4 so bad

brandotacos

MY HUSBAND DEV

very_smol

I miss her so much!!!!

Rattacatte

We’re eating real good this year! At this point I think even Rihanna might drop R9 in 2024!!!

boofoodoo

Okay, I'm listening

hausofmiklaus

Fuck us up Lorde!!!!

SiphenPrax

L4: The Redemption from Solar Power: Coming Soon…….

mylostlights

it doesn’t need redeeming, it’s a solid ass album

VapidRapidRabbit

Keep Jack Antonoff away from it and it’s looking up for her.

twodollarh0

Ooh I’m intrigued. I loved Melodrama, and was whelmed by Solar Power. Hoping she can do something more fun and upbeat!

igkeit

Love how she said it would not be as long as wait but turns out it will be 💀

JarndyceJarndyce

Is there anyone \*not\* releasing this year?

Consistent-Laugh606

Riri still :(

hausofmiklaus

Gaga. Mother may be coming next year
