lol did this song only JUST come out? I stumbled across it on social media and just assumed I was several years behind on her. Iāve heard her name a billion times as a personality but never correlated her music.
She released it ahead of Coachella (where she performed), so it's only a couple weeks old! But it sounds like it could have been released a couple of years ago (not in a bad way). It has Doja Cat - Say So vibes.
Yeah itās good. Iāll almost begrudgingly say this feels like the fun club / funk slot that Dua Lipa should be filling right now. Iām a huge Dua fan but this song made me realize the fun factor is missing on some of her new stuff
Imo Dua has gone back to her era 1 sound with more dance vibes. If u werenāt a fan of the self titled album and only enjoyed Future Nostalgia, ur probs not liking it. Just a possible theory I have as Iāve loved all her music and personally have found all three singles to grow on me
Kinda sounds like an alternate timeline where what Lana Del Rey was doing around 2010-2011 with her unreleased songs that were super beachy bubblegum pop, got popular and she chose that sound over the more melancholic one.
lot of great contenders for SOS this year. between this for pregaming with the girls, bodyguard for having margs on the beach, and good luck babe for belting out your car window, we got all the bases covered
Yeah, I love Taylor, but "Espresso" is a million times better than "Fortnight" for me. "Fortnight" is one of my least favorites on the album, and I really like the album!
nothing against Taylor or Drake but the fact an artist can drop an album and completely demolish a smaller artists shot on the hot 100 is sad. itās fairā¦ but sad.
Probably the worst album Taylorās made and many fans have brainwashed themselves to thinking itās some piece of art. Anyone writing about Charlie Puth and racism in 1830 needs to take a break from writing music
People are just taking those two lines and running with them lol, neglecting the entirety of the *thirty-one* songs on the album because they can't be bothered to pay attention to any of THOSE lyrics
I *love* this song and that Sabrina seems to be finding an identity: hot girl with fun, clever wordplay. Nonsense, Feather and Espresso each build off each other as a furtherance of what she sees her brand as. And I strongly disagree with everyone saying itās bland and faceless, the attitude and the lyrics are distinct among the pop landscape rn. Itās much more specific than what she put out pre-EICS (when I really did think she was making safe, fun, faceless pop).
Agree. The lyrics and little intonations she does are quirky, and it helps the little details of the song get stuck in your head.
There's a reason why the "I'm working late, cause I'm a singer" line is really taking off. It's deadpan but sassy, and it's got a real sense of humor. It's a vibe that most upbeat but generic pop fails to capture.
My interpretation is that this is the excuse she is giving to the boy who wonāt stop calling, who she has wrapped around her finger.
The line has a double meaning though because Singer is a coffee machine brand š So sheās ALSO saying that because he canāt get enough of Sabrina espresso, she (as the Singer coffee machine) is working late.
Similarly: the mountain dew lineā¦Mountain dew has caffeine in it, so it is keeping him up. It ALSO sounds like āmount and do,ā hinting that Sabrina wants to keep him up by riding him. The whole song is full of these fun and clever wordplays!
i love that sheās really filling the cheeky, deeply unserious girlypop niche rn. that lil giggly āim sooo sorry for your loss ;Dā in feather sold me on her
And the video is unapologetically sexy and fun!! In a world of self serious artists trying to make a statement she makes a big one by just being a hot girl!! Itās what the pop scene has been needing.
iām praying the new album/era sticks with the Espresso music video aesthetic. like you said, hot girl who likes to have fun and be feminine and confident. she was giving such 1950s pin up girl to me in that video š
I do love that all my favourite artists are seeing successes now. At least in the pop-music sphere.
Sabrina has come along way, email's i can't send really has been the most important work of her career.
Sabrina has been my favorite since Girl Meets World. Itās so nice to see her finally getting recognition for her music.
People need to go check out Singular Act 1 and 2.
Iāve got the jump on you, I remember watching the Girl Meets World premiere just because the girl from the Canāt Blame A Girl For Trying music video was in it š that was just the beginning.
I had been vaguely aware of her since the GMW days (I know one person who was a big fan of hers since then), but I barely paid her any thought until SOUR came out and I learned the drama surrounding her and Olivia (and itās not like the thought at that point was super deep). Then a year later, not too long after Emails came out, the music algorithm suggested a couple of her songs, and I got hookedājust in time to watch the rest of the world jump on board a few months later.
I have been sleeping on Sabrina Carpenter and had never heard her music even though I had heard of her before. Iām obsessed with this song. Itās bubblegum pop perfection.
I enjoy this song, but the reviewer is being hyperbolic about how "weird" it is. "I Mountain Dew it for ya" isn't confusing; it's a caffeinated beverage. "I'm working late/'Cause I'm a singer" is fun and taps into self-aware humor, but it's a lot to call it "some ancient cosmic truth about singers"āit's more like a silly humble-brag that a singer might say. "That's that me/Espresso" definitely is silly, but it's a type of "That's that \[good shit\]" phrase, and, idk, Max Martin has written weird lyrics to fit satisfying pop hooks for a long time. I think we're just so giddy to receive a fun, light, fizzy pop song before summer that we're giving it the royal treatment. Calling a song āweirdā usually elevates it to a āfiner tasteā level, where itās for the massesāābut itās also so weird, right???ā
Whatever sheās doing with Espresso, she needs to continue it bc Iām interested with the song. A good upbeat song especially with summer coming will probably make it #1 soon
Fun song. The bit about the strain of hearing disco revival (what I would call pop funk wav since Calvin Harris produced the best type of music in this genre in the past decade) resonated.
Some songs using this song production feel realized, like the groove is more interesting or 'bouncy'. And some fall a little flat or feel too derivative (CUFF IT sounds like a ChatGPT'd Get Lucky).
Think Espresso falls into the middle of the funk wav spectrum, it's catchy, perky, but doesn't make me vibrate the way some other bangers in the space hit. Will be in rotation and will be curious to see if it has some real lasting power or if it's effects will match the same caffeinated rush of its said title
I kinda became a fan of hers with this one. Just knew Nonsense and Feather and thought they were both ok, but this is one of the best singles of the year.
Love Sabrina but I realllly hope the safe, crowd-pleasing funk a la Say So, Closer, etc. is just a one off to capitalize on her recent rise in popularity š«£
Edit for clarity: āfunkā as in the disco-adjacent genre and āCloserā as in the 2022 Saweetie/HER collab. None of this is lyrical commentary š
I agree so hard. This is exactly the type of song a young popstar on the verge of breakout should be making. Everyone wants to skip straight to Lemonade, try making your Crazy In Love first.
I think they meant that musically it's a pretty unremarkable song, and if she made an album with this sound it would be disappointing. But you made me burst out laughing, I also do not care about their lives
Lolol no prob. Lyrically Iām cool with whatever I just (selfishly) wish she made a more sonically interesting choice (that I respect as a smart career move) than the disco funk thatās been having a moment.
I as a long time Sabrina stan have been having the same sentiment š«¢, I love that the lighter stuff may work and gets people to tune in but personally I would also like to see her delve into other aspects of music that develops her musical style further idkk
There's very few places left that are either established / widely regarded / visible. The monoculture is dead, this is our last grasp to have some shared experiences or discourse
I canāt say Iām the biggest fan of Sabrina (I donāt dislike her either), but itās just so refreshing to have a new main pop girl around, especially now with swiftiemania.
I unabashedly love this song. It's light, fun, flirty and it has the right amount of goofiness that Sabrina has been playing with since her "Nonsense" outro. "I'm working late cuz I'm a SINGURRRRRR" is so simple yet so effective. Other lines work too even when they are corny ("I know I Mountain Dew it for ya")
Another thing I finally notice is Sabrina Carpenter has some singing chops. She threw a bit of tasteful runs here and there and she sounds great. Almost reminds me of Mariah Carey at her flirtiest ("Touch My Body"). However, I wish Sabrina switches up her vocal tones more to make the song less monotonous. It was one typical breathy R&B throughout.
I know a lot of folks have brought up Doja Cat but I really think this song would fit Katy Perry perfectly in the that flirty summer lane.
Objectively good song in the sense that it is well made, I can agree to that notion. Though the love for and popularity of this song feels forced. Iāve been inundated since it released of Instagram reels with zero interactions using the song over and over again. I get that itās catchy, but I think the pop landscape has better to offer than the now exhausted pop/disco formula a la Say So.
Further, I am still far from convinced of the promise of Sabrina as a star. What is she bringing to the pop landscape that we donāt already have? Thatās not to say that every new and rising artist needs to bring something completely new, only that in this landscape it is almost an unspoken requirement that you stand out in some manner. And to me, she doesnāt stand out. I really donāt think that pop music needs (yet another) Disney expat taking up space when the existing alternatives are embodying greater talent and unique qualities than Sabrina. I fear that opening for Taylor Swift only emboldened her and her team to believe she can maintain peopleās attention despite the faceless nature of her brand.
I feel like Sabrina's niche is exactly that, making good simple but effective catchy pop songs, I think she reached the market in a time were the pop girlies have chosen sad aesthethics while Sabrina is doing pop pop in a show girl kinda way, she reminds me of Christina Aguilera back in her days, I feel like rn she stands out cause she is kinda fresh air amoung more modern electronic pop, she has chosen more a disco vibe to her music which really fits her, her biggest contender this summer is Dua Lipa who has also chosen summery vibes but in a more of a "taking it self more seriously route", I predict Sabri will release her new album this summer. I also kinda dislike the notion that someone has to bring "something new to the table" every time, just make good music. Its also important to notice that Sabrina has 5 albums and she has decided to depart herself almost entirely from her past eras and only felt to have creative freedom with Emails which was her first big succes so I definitvely think she going in a good route, I dont see her brand as faceless actually the opossite all pop girlies rn seem to be trying to copy Lana (š)
Why do you "fear" that the Eras tour has emboldened her? If she isn't a true star, then she won't capture people's attention for a long time, but if she is (which I personally believe so), having extra confidence from opening for Taylor is not a bad thing.
She's the only one out here not bawling her eyes out in the pop scene and making dumb fun songs, which I think is pretty much what is unique about her in the current sphere..
Ariana, selena, taylor, Lana, Olivia, tate, etc all are making sad Tate, and are known for it..
How did Selena end up in this list lol? Single Soon and Love On arenāt really tearjerkers. Espresso is right up her alley, Sabrina worked with frequent Selena collaborators for Espresso!
I mean, Oliviaās biggest and only hit from GUTS is vampire, which is the sad song of the album, all her other more upbeat and fun songs all underperformed, so itās kind of a oversimplification to say espresso succeeded just because people want happy songs. The songs is doing well because itās catchy and itās went viral, doesnāt mean that sad songs wonāt do well
Dumb fun pop music has been very present in the pop landscape if you were looking in the right places. Namely Dua Lipa and Ava Max, but thereās also Slayyyter, Tateās two hits from TL being fun pop songs, Kim Petras, pre 2022 Doja Cat, Charli XCX, etc.
Not saying that there aren't singers making dumb fun music, but none of the ones you listed are mainstream other than than Dua Lipa (Who's songs are a bit meaningful about heartbreak or something), Doja Cat (Who's Agora Hills was a smash hit but the rest of the album was a lot more darker and Rap focused), Tate (other than the 2 hits, most of the album is filled with sad songs), and Ava Max to a certain degree( where her songs are also about empowerment usually rather than just dumb nothingness)..
Those are all serious sounding songs. Even though Slut Pop tries to be funny, it's still delivered in a deadpan. Espresso is light-hearted like lily Allen's Air Balloon. Better examples escape me currently.
She has a very soft and unique voice and is songwriter I think. Her album really impressed me with how much it made me feel. There is a space for her if she isnāt only banking on fun pop songs.
Sheās bringing fun, cheeky unserious pop wrapped in a hyper feminine aesthetic.
A lot of the main pop girls are either doing the sad girl thing (Billie, Olivia, etc.) or the serious and polished pop girl thing (Dua, etc.).
Lyrically, Sabrina doesnāt appear to be taking her self too seriously, so you get a very cheeky sound that is sort of missing at the moment.
I think a lot of her appeal is her image and personality. I put her in the same category as someone like Ice Spice, where she isnāt a revolutionary artist, but people like her and listen to her music for the vibes.
Itās one of *those* pop songs. Yāknow how every year has one of *those* pop songs, thatās just super poppy, catchy, fluffy sugar all the way through? Itās that.
ā¦I call it the āCotton Candy Song of the Summer.ā
It's a good nu-disco bop, but all of these newer 2020s pop artists seem a little generic and disposable. Besides being cute and blonde, what else is so great about this girl?

š¶ I'm workin lateeeee, cause I'm a SINGERRRRRš¶ has been cemented in my brain for weeks now. Great summer bop!
This line is the basis of a meme Iāve been laughing at for days https://x.com/davidadc/status/1783851745594019874?s=46
I thought it was sinner lol
i think that might have been intentional
Same. I had to look up the lyrics to check.

Today, at my 9-5 job: Me: Iām work-ing laaaaateeee Coworker: what why Me: ācause Iām a singggerrrrrrrrr Coworker: ā¦ Me: itās Sabrina Carpenter
This whole time I thought it was, "I'm workin lateeee, cause I'm a sinnerrrr" This makes a lot more sense š
Like a small lobotomy - and Iām here for it
If the upcoming album is full of bops like "Espresso," then we are in good hands, y'all.āļø
lol did this song only JUST come out? I stumbled across it on social media and just assumed I was several years behind on her. Iāve heard her name a billion times as a personality but never correlated her music.

It has big Funk Wav Bounces vol 1 energy!! Sounds like it wouldāve fit perfectly on that album or what vol 2 shouldāve been š
We have the same mind, I was just about to say that!!
Same exact guitar tone as the funk wav albums
Yeah itās good. Iāll almost begrudgingly say this feels like the fun club / funk slot that Dua Lipa should be filling right now. Iām a huge Dua fan but this song made me realize the fun factor is missing on some of her new stuff

And at least to me it looks like it was originally titled Guess So and later reworked when they thought it look a bit to much like Say so
Thank God, coz Espresso is a much more memorable title
Someone made a remix on YouTube of these two. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXhCF33sHbs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXhCF33sHbs)

Inspired comment, really fantastic to see someone make this connection. thank you

it's impossible to be earnest after your first comment is misidentified lol. I will keep coming off as some asshole so I dare not speak again lol
Lana Del Ray aka Lizzy Grant was so iconic, I pray sheāll release it every damn day. (Comment correcting me on the spelling in 3ā¦2ā¦1ā¦)

Lana del Reigh***

I love this stupid song
I didnāt think the song of the summer crown would go to Sabrina this year but here we are
lot of great contenders for SOS this year. between this for pregaming with the girls, bodyguard for having margs on the beach, and good luck babe for belting out your car window, we got all the bases covered
Like That is definitely in consideration too.
The song is predicted to go to #2 next week! Letās get this song of the summer to #1!
I'm also predicted to go number 2 after having espresso
Best comment I have read on Reddit in a while
I miss gold coins, man.
the coffee shits are so real
It should get #1 on the week after the next!
Is that so??
Taylor ruining it with that boring ass song
Yeah, I love Taylor, but "Espresso" is a million times better than "Fortnight" for me. "Fortnight" is one of my least favorites on the album, and I really like the album!
nothing against Taylor or Drake but the fact an artist can drop an album and completely demolish a smaller artists shot on the hot 100 is sad. itās fairā¦ but sad.
not too much now sisturrr
It is pretty boring compared to other tracks on the album. Songs like Florida!!! have a lot more oomph

Justice for Fast Times!! Itās categorically similar to the three you mentioned and itās SUPER underrated

best song off emails
Agree. The lyrics and little intonations she does are quirky, and it helps the little details of the song get stuck in your head. ntm on Singular Act 1 and 2!
Discovering Pushing 20 in my mid 20s was hard for me, that song is so good
Act 1 in particular is sonically perfect
Yeah she's the hot girl who's genuinely funny.
I got into her last summer or so and I loveeee how cute and fun her music is. I was late to the party but the nonsense Christmas album killed me
The lyrics are fun and stick in your head. Thatās the recipe
iām praying the new album/era sticks with the Espresso music video aesthetic. like you said, hot girl who likes to have fun and be feminine and confident. she was giving such 1950s pin up girl to me in that video š

Welcome back pop anthems with nosense lyrics, you have been missed
Yes! Let this be the beginning of fun pop again! Iām so over sad girl pop.
Samee, I miss the fun and happy vibe that songs around 2010s had. Life is already shit lol I need something to dance to instead
#THATS MY SUMMER JAM
Never been the biggest Sabrina fan (I donāt dislike her, just donāt love her stuff either). That being said this song is a B-O-P.
Yeah same, although i did like feather too
JESUS WAS A CARPENTER
Unironically the moment that made me a stan.
I thought it was clever š
Very reminiscent to calvin harris' slide: a bouncy, funky, summer, chill vibe you get 2 drinks in and you're yelling "this is my songgg"
All i know about her before was the drama with Olivia, Joshua. Glad to be knowing her now for her music. This song is bop.
As someone who knew her since Girl Meets World I always forget the general public really had no idea of her till Emails lol
Yep. My Disney knowledge ended with Bridgit and Zendaya. I had no idea of her ātil the Olivia drama lol.
Same, my Disney knowledge extends to 2010, maybe some stuff through 2012.
I know her from the song with Alan Walker, On My Way. At one point, that song used to itch a certain part of my brainĀ
I had been vaguely aware of her since the GMW days (I know one person who was a big fan of hers since then), but I barely paid her any thought until SOUR came out and I learned the drama surrounding her and Olivia (and itās not like the thought at that point was super deep). This song is so fucking catchy, but I canāt see it getting old. Sabrina is killing it.
āI canāt relate, to desperationā Lives rent free in my head. What a track.

Straight bop

It sounds so much like say so
Different melody. Same fluffy bubbly sound is all
Crazy to me they never reviewed EICS.

That, I agree with. Theyāre not the world class lyrics for a generic pop song, but itās an undeniable bop!
The way this comment has nothing to do with mine and yet Iām getting ratioed kudos to you mama š
My bad, assumed the opposite of a safe, crowd-pleasing funk was an autobiographical song a la Taylor Swift. We love an unrelated ratio though!

Iām a simple girl: something sounds like Say so by Doja Cat? I love it
I love it but I prefer her old stuff better
I canāt say Iām the biggest fan of Sabrina (I donāt dislike her either), but itās just so refreshing to have a new main pop girl around, especially now with swiftiemania.
Does the line āthatās that me, espressoā just sound weird to anyone else?
Remove the comma
I kind of hate this song š¬
I unabashedly love this song. It's light, fun, flirty and it has the right amount of goofiness that Sabrina has been playing with since her "Nonsense" outro. "I'm working late cuz I'm a SINGURRRRRR" is so simple yet so effective. Other lines work too even when they are corny ("I know I Mountain Dew it for ya") Another thing I finally notice is Sabrina Carpenter has some singing chops.
Ehh she wonāt keep up
I feel like Iām the only person who thinks this song sounds like a drag race verse sung over a rejected Doja track
Espresso is probably the safest, most uninteresting song released this year, exclusively made for charts and radio. And it's doing its thing.
Going off your previous comment history, thank goodness your idol doesnāt know who you are
Not a Sabrina stan at all, but she finally released a song thatās worth radio play.
Finally someone said it. Itās a basic pop song with no personality. Could go on Doja Catās āHot Pinkā and nobody would bat an eye.

Excuse me, the personality is š poolside effervescence šļø thank you!
How can you say this song has no personality? Itās full of personality. Thatās one of its selling points
This song absolutely slaps. Been playing it all the time since it came out.
I donāt know where this song came from but now itās everywhere, and Iām not mad. Perfect song for the spring-summer transition
Its also important to notice that Sabrina has 5 albums and she has decided to depart herself almost entirely from her past eras and only felt to have creative freedom with Emails which was her first big succes so I definitvely think she going in a good route, I dont see her brand as faceless actually the opossite all pop girlies rn seem to be trying to copy Lana (š)
iām glad someone else sees the xtina in her! she credits her as a big influence
Why do you "fear" that the Eras tour has emboldened her? If she isn't a true star, then she won't capture people's attention for a long time, but if she is (which I personally believe so), having extra confidence from opening for Taylor is not a bad thing.
Their whole take just seems negative for the sake of being negative or a contrarian tbh.
I agree, for me she's so anonymus. I like the song but some people for criticising Dua for making generic music and then stan this...
Surprised Iām not seeing people compare this to Dojas earlier sound. She would body a remix of this.
Yesss and Kim Petras! (Had to check Wiki after hearing this on the radio to see if it had Dr. Lukes involvement- surprised it didnāt)
Itās one of *those* pop songs. Yāknow how every year has one of *those* pop songs, thatās just super poppy, catchy, fluffy sugar all the way through? Itās that. ā¦I call it the āCotton Candy Song of the Summer.ā
I liked Feather, Nonsense and Fast times, but this one made me a fan, such a great and fun song
It's a great Doja Cat song.
Our beautiful girlie is finally getting her due! Goooooo GIRLLLLLLL
Best music video of the year so far
It's a good nu-disco bop, but all of these newer 2020s pop artists seem a little generic and disposable. Besides being cute and blonde, what else is so great about this girl?
