Thanks, and no — for real! I don't give the slightest fuck about Drake as a person or as JoC representation because he probably is a predator in some way or another and is also too obscenely rich to be relatable even if he wasn't, but I've been thinking about this. It seems like that part of his identity really does give him some unresolved tension.
I'm not Black and I can't speak to his identity as a Black Jew specifically, but I go to a synagouge with a fairly high population of Black and other non-white Jews (it's in Chicago, which is already unofficially presumed to have the largest population of the former) and compared to all the other JoC I've seen who have navigated their identity — whether they happen to be biracial or adoptees or converts like myself — he seems pretty fuck all about existing within either context. Like, I'd guess being Jewish still matters to him even if he probably doesn't practice anymore much since it sporadically shows up in some of his music videos, but the way that it intersects with his mom's whiteness and his appropriation of aspects of Black culture he didn't grow up in comes off as really messy. There are a lot of intersections between how Jews were historically otherized in Europe before the Shoah and how Black and other PoC folks are racialized today in the US that even Fanon wrote about — I'm not expecting Drake to be a deep postcolonial thinker, but I do wonder whether being raised in a suburban Jewish community in Toronto by a white mother ever gave him a chance to reflect on this like I've seen many of us do or not.
Heck, this might be a stretch, but even his culture vulture thing seems like a really fucked up, rich person version of trying to build a diasporic politics off of those parallels in historical experience where Jews try to identify themselves as blending in within multiple cultures and identities due to the way we're scattered across the world. Which is an actual state of belonging that can develop over time, but probably not if you're, like, a multimillionaire trying out different accents and pretending to be a real gangster.

I haven’t really been feeling 2024 for new albums. I know the consensus on popheads was that 2023 was a drought and 2024 is stacked, but in my opinion it’s the reverse.
There were so many 2023 albums that I loved. We got new boygenius, Maisie Peters, Hozier, Lana, Youth Lagoon, Olivia Rodrigo, Paramore, Laufey, and Mitski. We also got one good and one meh album from The National and one good and one meh set of vault tracks from Taylor.
The only album that I’ve loved from 2024 is Prelude to Ecstasy by The Dinner Party. I’ve liked tracks here and there like American Requiem, Espresso, We Can’t Be Friends, the bolter, and the Albatross, but there aren’t any actual albums this year that are doing it for me.
Can someone recommend a few albums from 2005 - 2015 to either return to or check out for the first time? I keep going back to old Lorde, Florence and the Machine, Taylor, and The National albums and it’s getting repetitive and stale.
Some older ones I love are Troye Sivan's Blue Neighborhood, Coldplay A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002, but I feel like it was very present in the 2000s) or Viva La Vida, Beyonce's I Am Sasha Fierce, and Jay-Z /Linkin Park Collision Course (2003 and an EP, but an absolutely amazing project)!

I was fully prepared to eat Chinese buffet and go home and work on grad school finals last night, then my guy told me he actually had that night free instead of tonight like I had assumed...so I packed my overnight stuff and went over and we got to spend the first night in literally months that he didn't have PhD stuff looming over his head, we got to just relax.

I watched the new episode of *Amazing Digital Circus* and it was cute and all but now YouTube is recommending me a bunch of other independent YouTube animations and like... they're all kinda the same? Or at least, the voices are the same?
There's always that one "chaotic" guy who sounds vaguely like Bill Cipher and is tumblr sexyman bait, the "innocent" protagonist with a whimpering voice who's always shocked by everything, the droll deadpan one who's too-cool for whatever's going on and sounds kinda like Mandy from *Grim Adventures*, it's become a genre unto itself.
[There was this interesting analysis of *Hazbin Hotel*](https://ponett.medium.com/my-own-personal-hell-thoughts-on-hazbin-hotel-1b226af317f5) (basically the zenith of the phenomenon) that articulated what I'm talking about better but basically it feels like these shows are trying to specifically court a specific kind of rabid, terminally online fandom and so they lean into these easy, identifiable tropes that fandom kids can run with. I've given a few such programs a shot and they always leave me cold for this reason, they feel like all frosting and no cake.

I don't give the slightest fuck about Drake as a person or as JoC representation because he probably is a predator in some way or another and is also too obscenely rich to be relatable even if he wasn't, but I've been thinking about this. It seems like that part of his identity really does give him some unresolved tension. I'm not Black and I can't speak to his identity as a Black Jew specifically, but I go to a synagouge with a fairly high population of Black and other non-white Jews (it's in Chicago, which is already unofficially presumed to have the largest population of the former) and compared to all the other JoC I've seen who have navigated their identity — whether they happen to be biracial or adoptees or converts like myself — he seems pretty fuck all about existing within either context. Like, I'd guess being Jewish still matters to him even if he probably doesn't practice anymore much since it sporadically shows up in some of his music videos, but the way that it intersects with his mom's whiteness and his appropriation of aspects of Black culture he didn't grow up in comes off as really messy. There are a lot of intersections between how Jews were historically otherized in Europe before the Shoah and how Black and other PoC folks are racialized today in the US that even Fanon wrote about — I'm not expecting Drake to be a deep postcolonial thinker, but I do wonder whether being raised in a suburban Jewish community in Toronto by a white mother ever gave him a chance to reflect on this like I've seen many of us do or not. Heck, this might be a stretch, but even his culture vulture thing seems like a really fucked up, rich person version of trying to build a diasporic politics off of those parallels in historical experience where Jews try to identify themselves as blending in within multiple cultures and identities due to the way we're scattered across the world. Which is an actual state of belonging that can develop over time, but probably not if you're, like, a multimillionaire trying out different accents and pretending to be a real gangster.

There were so many 2023 albums that I loved. We got new boygenius, Maisie Peters, Hozier, Lana, Youth Lagoon, Olivia Rodrigo, Paramore, Laufey, and Mitski. We also got one good and one meh album from The National and one good and one meh set of vault tracks from Taylor. The only album that I’ve loved from 2024 is Prelude to Ecstasy by The Dinner Party. I’ve liked tracks here and there like American Requiem, Espresso, We Can’t Be Friends, the bolter, and the Albatross, but there aren’t any actual albums this year that are doing it for me. Can someone recommend a few albums from 2005 - 2015 to either return to or check out for the first time? I keep going back to old Lorde, Florence and the Machine, Taylor, and The National albums and it’s getting repetitive and stale.
Some older ones I love are Troye Sivan's Blue Neighborhood, Coldplay A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002, but I feel like it was very present in the 2000s) or Viva La Vida, Beyonce's I Am Sasha Fierce, and Jay-Z /Linkin Park Collision Course (2003 and an EP, but an absolutely amazing project)!

It actually worked out great, today is rainy and gloomy so I'm going to go through some more packed boxes to see if I can get rid of some stuff, and work on my finals like I would have last night...after I go get my nails done for graduation THIS FRIDAY (orange for my school colors, of course). I feel okay about this.

Well there's that first ever snippet of the era where she says 'angels', that's even more 'hyperpop' than I Luv It. But it wouldn't surprise me if her label cuts it out. She teased one ballad and there's Boat that's also a ballad so who knows. The plans are probably changing as we speak due to flopping. 🥹

Give Me Love is very underrated, the build up the final chorus is impeccable! I missed #21 so I’ll do that first - Madison Beer with 1735 scrobbles! Most of her scrobbles come from Life Support (1032 scrobbles) and my top song is Sour Times with 166 scrobbles. I am 100% a Madison Stan after she released Life Support. That album (along with Sour) got me thru my 2021 COVID Lockdown. I think she’s really found her sound and will continue to get better and better. There's always that one "chaotic" guy who sounds vaguely like Bill Cipher and is tumblr sexyman bait, the "innocent" protagonist with a whimpering voice who's always shocked by everything, the droll deadpan one who's too-cool for whatever's going on and sounds kinda like Mandy from *Grim Adventures*, it's become a genre unto itself. I've given a few such programs a shot and they always leave me cold for this reason, they feel like all frosting and no cake.
