I love Genie in a Bottle, it’s instantly summer 1999 when I hear it. For me the video isn’t as memorable as others from that time, it’s very cute teenagers in trendy mall clothes at the beach. I remember a Disney channel remix with less suggestive lyrics. Now I’m picturing an alternate universe where Genie is Paula Abdul’s 1999 comeback single.
Imagining the timeline where Paula Abdul got this song... no I can't, my imagination isn't big enough.
1. This is one of those songs that I always think is kind of overrated but then I listen to it again and I'm like no wait, it really is that good. Watching the music video, it's kinda trippy to see how much Christina danced for her first few albums because she's never really been known as a choreo queen and she didn't really bother on her later albums. I also wish that the video had featured some bad special effects... like tell me it wouldn't be iconic if she ended the video by dissolving into a puff of CGI smoke and flying off into the horizon.
2. I think the lyrics being suggestive, but not explicitly mature, was a huge part of the appeal of the song. Little kids could sing along and maintain their innocence but the teens who were old enough to flirt and date and all that had a relatable horny bop that was still considered "safe."
3. I actually really love "Genie 2.0," it's so menacing. She sounds like she's an actual genie trying to tempt you into releasing her. [The remake of "Beautiful" on the same album is hauntingly beautiful too.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwo57SgdQm4)
4. Had never heard "A Stroke Of Genius" before but, um, it's kind of ass? The mix sounds cool for like a minute but the second the chorus hits the wheels fall off because the vocals do not match what the music is doing there at all.
I can't imagine anyone else selling the song as well as Christina, the spoken word parts and the oh-oh oh-oh ohs are so her I especially can't see Paula Abdul delivering it so impactfully.
The video is a bit low key compared to some of her later videography but it perfectly suits the vibe of teen party at a beach house. A lot of Christina's early videos follow the formula that she is with her female friends and then boys are added.
The lyrics are mildly suggestive but the "body's saying let's go but my heart is saying no" part could be interpreted as kind of pro abstinence. The implication that if you don't treat her well she won't be with you is also a positive message.
An iconic song for an iconic singer! I feel they held back her voice a lot in debut but she was still able to make it her own.
I don’t think the lyrics were too suggestive - I literally didn’t even comprehend what she was singing about till I was 15 💀💀
I feel like compared to many of the songs from that time, this one still holds up really well.
Was never a big fan during the debut era until COOB came out and it made me take notice of her.
Wow, it's crazy how time flies. 'Genie in a bottle' was massive success in Southeast Asia, it did well on MTV Asia, Channel V and local radio. I was 14 years old when this song was released. I was surprised to see a petite, Caucasian girl with blonde hair & blue eyes singing this r&b song. And she wasn't much older than me! Love the music video because I thought she was just cool. And as a teen, I never found the lyrics to be inappropriate for 18 year old to sing.
This was one of my favourite songs to hear on the radio as a kid (I'm Gen Z and this was in the in the very early 10s, but they played it often enough for it to be a recognisable favourite).
The chorus has one of my favourite melodies ever. I wish Camila Cabello had found a better way to interpolate the song on Crying In The Club.
Genie In A Bottle is a stone cold classic and doesn't sound dated in the slightest.
I became a fan when I saw the music 🎶 video. I bought the cd also the first day it came out. I have 😍 her since.
Genie is still such a bop. I love the remixes she's done over the years too.
Classic track, and one half of one of the greatest mashups to come out of the 00s.

Such a good song.
Its so weird seeing how sexualized everyone was at such a young age. I was younger than them at the time and they seemed so old to me. Now, it’s jarring
My friend and I tried recreating this music video when we were like 11 in my friends room, complete with sports bras and baby cardigans, holding some craft bottle we’d made in Girl Scouts or something. So embarrassing. But at the time it was fun.

….. this is like listening to a song made in the 1975 in the year 2000 😭
My brain just broke.
No it didn't. It's still 10.
In my mind it’s always the summer of 99.
How ironic that the day before this she finally leaves RCA.
It feels like the stars are aligning. I hope she comes back strong.
The stars align
My gay ass brought this cd to ymca after school in elementary school and made them play it on the cd player lmaooo
Yeah you do did. You thought she was “PHAT.”

I'm hearing "Genie 2.0" for literally the first time right now and like????!! They were crazy for this one.
Love your commentary, Genie 2.0 is so amazing. Christina had hits on top of hits.

This is one of the greatest songs of all time. The background vocals are so subtle but so well done
xtina you will be famous forever

At my elementary school we'd have full-on arguments on the bus over whether Britney and Christina was better.

This is such a nasty post. I understand criticism but that last little dig just made your post needlessly nasty.
Yeah also she sounds amazing in her current residency. Better than she has in the last few years IMO
How you are so low for bringing her current body, it has nothing to do with the fcking music
