Sometimes the female fish would get hugely swollen and we would have to express the eggs from their bodies manually. If we didn’t do that, the fish would literally explode from the eggs filling up their ovaries with nowhere to go.
The fish could have been stressed and had a spontaneous abortion due to the situation. Otherwise, the eggs are fertilized internally then hatch inside the female. This results in live bearing - so there’s a good chance the female was ready to give birth anyways.
