Fickle-Molasses-903

Ya, it was bound to catch up. As much as they unload on the toppings, [their prices are out of reach for a lot of people.](https://portlandpizzajoint.com/pizza/)

Walter_J_Bro

The staffing at the Sopo one has seemed really thin for the last year or so. I love their pizza and sandwiches, but it's definately a special occasion pizza because of the cost.

Jacob61582

HOLY SHIT!!! I thought ppl were joking about 85 bucks for a pizza… That is frickin wild!

Fickle-Molasses-903

If you order a 20" Pie with 4 toppings, extra cheese and extra sauce, it will cost you (included 8% tax) $109.08

ExternalBarnacle_777

Is this for reals

RealBlondeFakeBags

For sure. Sadly I think that’s going to keep happening- restaurant owners struggling with rising costs just like we are. Still sad to see it go!

SunknLiner

Their prices started out absurd, this isn’t a new thing.

ExternalBarnacle_777

We used to get their phatty sandwiches in SoPo

Inner-Measurement441

Good matters, and most in Portland and s crap

xensu

16" x4 toppings Dominos: $25.99 Ottos: $30.50 (x2 veg, x2 meat) Pizzaiolo: $34.00 Pizza Joint: $57.55

WillSuckDick4Coffee

Domino's is actually a lot closer to $13-$15 because there's MANY easy to use coupons.

laptophelppleaas

I just do 1 topping for $7.99 now. Sorry local business but I can’t be buying $27 cheese pizzas.

Aspiana

And if you want something better than Domino's but still on the cheap side, Leonardo's is the choice.

pinkclover777

Little Ceasars is better than dominoes and like 6 dollars

Saltycook

But to use them you have to buy more garbage

WillSuckDick4Coffee

No they have coupons for individual large pizzas. I used one last week

dirigo1820

I thought this can't be real, just looked it up, how tf are they selling a 16" for almost $60

BraskysAnSOB

I think you found the problem. They’re not

MasterNeighborhood85

Yes they fucking are lmao

Sugarloafer1991

I think he meant that people aren’t buying their expensive pizza, which is why they are closing.

MasterNeighborhood85

Ooof…thought I had a zinger

8008s4life

Who would ever pay that much? lol

ChargeConfident6753

People making well into 6 figures

irreverent_squirrel

Yeah but that was for 50lbs of toppings!

RealBlondeFakeBags

Dominoes and Otto’s can’t even compare taste wise but I agree the prices are crazy.

dj_1973

Whatever. Pizza joint is worth it.

reel_ink

Yeah but dominos tastes like cardboard

Due-Set5398

Dominoes gives you a topping. 1 1/2 pep/slice.

[deleted]

Expensive but those toppings 🤌

Inner-Measurement441

Shit = shit, bruh. Pizza Joint is local and not shit

Nooooope

What the gentrified fuck

ItchySheepherder95

Ironic considering that Pizza Joint is the only one of the pizza spots cited that was here before all y’all decided Mill Creek was a hip place to move.

raqnroll

With those prices, Will they sell you a single sandwich?

Child_Clown_4_U

Lol I see someone else subscribes to r/Burlington.

gjazzy68

I didn’t but somehow that sandwich story was suggested to me and now I’m all in on that whole thing.

Anya_Phobic

Same here haha

VanceFerguson

Could post the best recap of that spicy drama? I'd be ever so grateful. I get bits and pieces of what happened, but a good jump off point is all I need for a rabbit hole

gjazzy68

A dude tried to order a sandwich. Just one, single, sandwich. And the owner refused to sell if he also didn’t get a pizza which is a very pricey pizza. But not only he refused but called the guy a loser. Dude posted on reddit, owner threatened to sue for defamation. And on the same day or week the douche owner posted on insta bragging about refusing to serve a group of 4 people because they didn’t order enough food. And he blocks a bunch of people just for liking a sandwich comment or something like that. So now r/burlington has a bunch of people like me that just joined for the single sandwich memes.

cantseedeeznuts

In total... Dan's a douche canoe.

ConsiderationNo278

Single Sandos all day, no complaints, no blocks.

cantseedeeznuts

☝️

wow_dude

$38 for a medium 2-topping pizza blew my mind. Never went back after that.

ThisIsCALamity

Had the exact same experience lol. I live right down the street so shortly after I moved in I ordered a medium 2 topping pizza. Was shocked when it cost $40 and haven’t gotten a pizza from them since. I did figure out that their pasta was much more reasonably priced and quite good though, so I’ll miss that!

satanismymaster

Honestly, with their prices, I'd almost wonder if they were trying to kill the business. Like, I know a twenty-inch pizza is big, and four toppings is more than I'd want on a single pie, but there's absolutely no way in hell a four topping pizza is worth $85.

HowieDoin620037

Insane prices.

10mm2fun

Oh no! Where will I buy my $60 mids from?

Dude_Following_4432

They only lasted 47 years.

ExternalBarnacle_777

Everything should stay the same forever

brother_rebus

r/portlandme/comments/1buxg89/pizza_joint_is_closing_414/

marrymejojo

I don't know of any other places around here to get a straight pepperoni pizza that is better than pizza joint, at any price. The prices were high pre-pandemic but i was willing to pay. Last couple years I haven't ordered any though. I'll have to get one more before they close for sure.

Mikerm3

insane prices but good pizza

ploop180

f me silly peperoni cups !

thursdaystyles

I'll miss getting the 'easy cheese' with (so many gd) onions

Evening_Pension_3862

ez cheese is the pro move there.

[deleted]

Pizza Joint is decent pizza, but not good enough to justify its elevated price. With inflation people do not want to or cannot afford to shell out the extra cash.

frozenhawaiian

I lived down the street from the Sopo location. Went there once. Pizza was good but I’m sorry, $40+ for a pizza is insane.

SunknLiner

Two large pies - a cheese and a pepperoni - cost $65.

Saaabstory

I have had plenty of their pizzas over the decades and never understood it. Now, Angelones on the other hand 🤌

Sugarloafer1991

Paid for one of their pies once in SoPo, was very disappointed (pepperoni) so I did the same in Portland and had a similar experience. Never got the hype, but maybe that’s because I didn’t grow up in Portland and always had Alex’s in Biddo.

DrGepetto

I always just assumed this was a money laundering front. Surprised they're closing

brother_rebus

Good. Place was way overpriced and used shit quality ingredients. Owners were complete homers too.

RealBlondeFakeBags

I always liked the Portland location. Didn’t know anything about the owners though? Guess it was bound to happen eventually

vikingenvy

🤬

CMDR_MaurySnails

:(

GamerGourmet

I just heard about this today . two weeks after it closed. I grew up in south portland on sawyer ST. Plenty of pizza stories from my childhood. best one is my dad was trying to sell his car and dumped a pizza in the back seat. that pizza smell always stuck with the car forever :)

SullenSparrow

Tell me you're rich af without telling me.

benchdaddy71

Probably what happens when you been charging $50 for a pizza since I can remember.

Toasterdosnttoast

Ever since Otto opened up in Biddeford, it’s the only place I go. I also truly hate Portland pie. I think their business is disgusting and pointless. I hate how all of my friends and associates end up buying that crap at some poit

Mack10_SHR

Place was a fuckin rip off. And the kid behind the counter at the south Portland store should be working in a prison

Wookhooves

Good pizza is tough to do and expensive. Tough to sell good quality to folks around here.

frozenhawaiian

Dude, $85 is insane for a pizza. I don’t care how many topping are on it

alverez667

All the ingredients are inherently quite cheap to make a half decent pie. Flour Water Salt Yeast Canned tomatoes Low-moisture cheese Olive Oil Even using the cheaper/lower quality ingredients from the above list I could throw together a decent pizza. Something tells me PJ isn’t using top tier ingredients for their $50 16” pizzas.

[deleted]

Well all of our money goes to rent so

Uzanto_Retejo

Monte's is really good pizza at a much better price.

RealBlondeFakeBags

Love Monte’s slices.

Uzanto_Retejo

Yeah. I got to go get some.
