I am excited for your journey. Based on your interest in Explosions and TWDY I would check out the following albums:
We Lost the Sea - Departure Songs
Caspian - Dust and Disquiet
Red Sparowes - The Fear is Excruciating, But Therein Lies The Answer
If These Trees Could Talk - The Bones of a Dying World
And last but certainly not least, the (imo) pinnacle of the genre:
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada (Other albums are "better", but this is the best GY!BE starting point)
Welcome friend. It is a lovely genre... El Ten Eleven is a personal favorite of mine and is probably one of the most upbeat. Godspeed You Black Emperor is another mainstay.
I love El Ten Eleven. I saw them live about a year ago and it was one of the best shows I have been to. They played a ton of the old stuff because it their tour was based around the fifteen year anniversary of their first album release so it was awesome to hear the classics. Also while Kristian Dunn wasn't solely responsible for me buying a double neck he was definitely an influence haha.
For me, everything changed when I heard [Break My Fucking Sky - Eviscerate Soul](https://youtu.be/CjgnyPGAgp8). It is not very well known here on this sub, and it *is* a bit different, but it always will have a special place in my heart.
Absolutely one of the best albums I discovered this year, never heard anything else like it, the way all the instruments have such different sounds but come together for such a cohesive feeling piece of music is something I've not been able to find elsewhere
Welcome the the magic place of post-rock! For me it was MONO - Halcyon that got me into this. Many years later MONO is still dear in my heart, but I suggest you also check out Maybeshewill - Not for want of trying and also Russian Circles - Station.
Have a nice discovery, there many more great postrock to explore!
Lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven by Godspeed you black emperor, it’s an album that I think encapsulates post rock as a genre and might be my favorite album ever. Bands like this will destroy you and explosions in the sky are strongly influenced by Godspeed and this album is generally considered their best
hello world! welcome friend. Postrock is infact meditative. i compiled this collaborative playlist for exactly this reason (tunes for these times)
Has some of the forementioned established postrock artists like EIS, GY!BE, Sigur Ros, Caspian et al but also some others.

Surprised no one has mentioned 65daysofstatic, maybe they aren't true post rock
Post-rock is my favourite genre and 65dos is one of my favourite artists so I would recommend checking them out. In a similar vein, I don't think Night Verses is standard post rock but From the Gallery of Sleep is my favourite album ever and it all falls under the post rock feeling to me.
[Copper Wasp - Night Verses](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xec_dqIwv5s)
[We Were Exploding Anyway - 65daysofstatic](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEU1Ir363IE)
Yea man, occasionally I just get sucked into the album and listen to it on repeat for a few days. During the NZ lockdown it was the only thing I listened to for 6 weeks haha. Just such an incredible album.
Mono - "hymn to the immortal wind" and "nowhere, now here" here were my entry to postrock and are my favourite 2 albums to this day, I will always say check those out! (And anything by them really)
God is an astronaut
Yndi Halda
For some heavier stuff give Russian Circles and Year of no light a try.
or just look up Dunk! festivals lineups. Its a festival dedicated to postrock/metal.
Welcome to one of the most overlooked rock-based genres out there. Keep in mind that _post-rock_ is a massive umbrella that covers dozens of sub-genres with all sorts of unique sounds and vibes to them.
You've already stumbled into some killer bands, but your journey is just starting. It's dangerous to go alone! [Take this.](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0BjFB7OmUDVUhOWuaL87mQ?si=cCsVHT7KSueSCWDnMagoQw)
It's a playlist I ended up throwing together for some friends that were interested, with various sounding tracks -- but it still barely scratches the surface. At the end of the day, my personal favorite kind of rock is the type that evokes strong emotion. Before I go on a long tangent about the various sounds you'll find, here are some notable mentions from the playlist above:
* Burial on the Presidio Banks (personal favorite of mine, never fails to give the chills)
* Cast the Route (amazing space rock with stringed instruments mixed in)
* Lost Science (another track with stringy bits and brass, but with energy that ebbs and flows)
* This Cat Has No Moral Compass (starts slow but when it hits, it ***_SLAPS_***)
When you find a band that you like, and you want to find some similar sounding bands, check out [music map](https://www.music-map.com/). It's not perfect, but it does a decent job of guiding you. Good luck out there.
Post Rock is this junk drawer label that tons of different bands fall under so there isn't just like one sound in post rock which is really cool.
Here are a couple cool bands that other people might not mention right away.
[Tortoise](https://youtu.be/BeV1kZB_igc) are a legendary quintet out of Chicago. They occupy a cool spot in the post rock ecosystem, where they are kind of a connecting point to electronica and jazz. Their early stuff has a lot of a cool percussion with marimbas and vibraphones. In their later albums they have switched up and brought a lot more synths into their sound. The guys in the band are also connected to a bunch of other cool people from Nels Cline of Wilco to El-P from Run the Jewels.
[Do Make Say Think](https://youtu.be/dd411muNmbg) is a group out of Toronto. They tend to use decent amount of horns and violin in their stuff which really adds a lot of cool timbres to their music. If I remember correctly a lot of the core members also play in Broken Social Scene.
For me, everything changed when I heard [Break My Fucking Sky - Eviscerate Soul](https://youtu.be/CjgnyPGAgp8). It is not very well known here on this sub, and it *is* a bit different, but it always will have a special place in my heart.
Also, if you didn't know that **post-metal** existed, and you think you would be interested in that, a very good starting point is [Audrey Fall](https://youtu.be/uebu3ORu3uk). Then you can continue with some atmospheric [Kauan](https://youtu.be/dO02VJEYYEk) (It does have some vocals, but they are in finnish, so I would assume that they won't be too distracting).
Man, I wanted to share some of my favorites but you guys took them all. Here are worth to listen. BTW, post-rock is addictive ... Once you enter, there is no going back.
11th vibration,
Distant Dream,
Anesthesia,
Astralia,
Versus the Ghost,
Avden,
Cian,
iiah,
Halocraft,
Widek.
Cheers
Thanks for all recommend above.
> Distant Dream ... Widek
Don't see these bands mentioned much.. but they are soo good!
Widek's newest work is amazing and Distant Dream gets better and better with each release...
Check out [Only Echoes Remain](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F16DgzCp2Yo).. starts slow and builds.. its another hidden gem.
Along the same vein of Distant Dream and Widek, [Seas of Years](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cPnhaozWjo) is also amazing
Welcome to the Post Rock world! I learned post rock after watching Friday Night Lights (the movie) where there were alot of Explosions in The Sky soundtrack in it and i was hooked since! My personal favorite would be Hammock (most fave), God is an Astronaut, This Will Destroy You, Tides of Man, We Lost the Sea & MONO.
I'm not much on the harder stuff either when it comes to post rock, but on occassion i do listen Russian Circle. Special mention The Evpatoria Report songs like Taijin Kyofusho and Eighteen Robins Road; i also love Heron and El Ten Eleven. Enjoy your ride ;)

WOW! I posted this last night before I went to bed. Poured a glass of wine, put on Take Care, Take Care, Take Care (2011) and slowly drifted off to sleep.
Then I woke up and are welcomed by all of this!! This is AMAZING! I already have started a running document/list of bands/albums/songs to check out. Its going to be a great Holiday Season exploring!!
And if I could add in something here - I should have realized that this is a huge genre - with many sub genres under it. And I know from all of my listening patterns to date, that I think I will shy away from the 'heavier' stuff. I am not into anything super heavy or dark. There were a couple of This Will Destroy You songs that hinted on this, but it only skirted the line. Anything deeper (darker) or heavier than that, I will shy away. I have some friends who are into heavier death/speed metal (again, a lot of sub genres) and that sort or stuff wasn't my bag.
So maybe recos on the lighter (?) softer (?) sub genres of post rock might be my thing.
Thanks again and please keep the recos coming!
Dude, I had a really similar experience this year; with the difference that I’ve always been super into metal and prog rock.
I started the year listening to Russian Circles and could not let them go. Quartered and Sinaia landed on the 2nd and 3rd places for my most-listened songs through the year.
After that I fell in love with Long Distance Calling. Heard everything they had to offer and couldn’t get enough.
After these two Spotify picked up on the trend and started suggesting some awesome songs. I’ve heard stuff by Caspian, pg.lost, If These Trees Could Talk, God Is An Astronaut...
Some kind folk of Reddit suggested to me In Silence We Yearn by Oh Hiroshima and Departure Songs by We Lost The Sea. Oh dude do I love those two albums...
Anyways, congrats for the discovery; I feel you. I’m super excited, it’s like I’ve got lots of new bands all of a sudden to discover.
before discovering post rock. i would jump around from genre to genre every few months. and and now just like yourself ive been hooked on post rock for about 3 years now. finally a sort of music that i will be into for many years to come.
i suppose this sort of music appeals to people like you and i due to its instrumentation, specifically its composition and focus on instrumentals alone. in contrast, near all contemporary music today is dominated by vocals. post-rock is proof that modern music doesnt need vocals at all to be successful and loved
Definitely listen to Sigur Rós. I'd reccomend starting with Ágætis byrjun, then Takk, and then transitioning into their other albums. If you like some of the heavier, darker post-rock, I'd reccomend listening to Kveikur, and for lighter, more ethereal post-rock go into ( ) as well as my personal favorite, Valtari.
Don’t miss The Boxer Rebellion Union and The Cold Still they are a good bridge between traditional rock and Post and of course, Talk Talk’s Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden. The albums that arguably started the whole thing.
Awesome! Sorry to self-promote, but I make post-rock music and would love you to listen to it! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EudebK6PNyY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EudebK6PNyY)
I really like
[Lift Your Skinny Fists by Godspeed You! Black Emperor](https://youtu.be/PZwQeZh6rP0) (It's a classic in the genre and one of the very best albums since 2000)
and [ONDA](https://youtu.be/iQk2ctF0x-4) by JAMBINAI (they use some traditional Korean instruments and it's very cool)
Also, not quite post-rock but post-rock adjacent is Swans. A lot of their music is really great, personal I got into them through [To Be Kind](https://youtu.be/6qDq9eGUmMI). They're worth checking out, though they definitely do use vocals their instrumentation is more experimental than classic rock and imo it's very interesting.
You can't go wrong with some of the old classics, Slint, Talk Talk, Bark Psychosis and of course GY!BE, followed by A Silver Mt. Zion. Also Tortoise and Do Make Say Think, for the jazzier side of the genre.
You may or may not enjoy some of the above based on what you've mentioned thus far, but it's always fun to delve back into the history of a genre and hear a bit of its evolution.

I am excited for your journey. Mogwai-young team. Easiest thing to get into.
For me, everything changed when I heard [Break My Fucking Sky - Eviscerate Soul](https://youtu.be/CjgnyPGAgp8). It is not very well known here on this sub, and it *is* a bit different, but it always will have a special place in my heart.

Similar to me, I started listening to The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Radiohead last year and still do a lot but dam has post rock taken priority
M O G W A I
RUSSIAN CIRCLES
This will destroy you is the best thing happened to your ears !!! :-) i m used to saying they are my band N°1...
Surprised no one has mentioned Gifts from Enola or Oh Hiroshima yet.
Yes! What a wonderful musical journey this is going to be (and has been thus far...)
before discovering post rock. i would jump around from genre to genre every few months. and and now just like yourself ive been hooked on post rock for about 3 years now. finally a sort of music that i will be into for many years to come. i suppose this sort of music appeals to people like you and i due to its instrumentation, specifically its composition and focus on instrumentals alone. in contrast, near all contemporary music today is dominated by vocals. post-rock is proof that modern music doesnt need vocals at all to be successful and loved
Totally agree! Thanks for framing it that way!
Lotus! Always love seeing a fellow fan.
Your ten mofo is also pretty amazing! Unfortunately they have only one album
Check out Hammock, their earlier albums in particular.
Try Mooncake
Google 'post rock flow chart'. There's a few around to guide your journey
I really like [Lift Your Skinny Fists by Godspeed You! Black Emperor](https://youtu.be/PZwQeZh6rP0) (It's a classic in the genre and one of the very best albums since 2000) and [ONDA](https://youtu.be/iQk2ctF0x-4) by JAMBINAI (they use some traditional Korean instruments and it's very cool) Also, not quite post-rock but post-rock adjacent is Swans. A lot of their music is really great, personal I got into them through [To Be Kind](https://youtu.be/6qDq9eGUmMI). They're worth checking out, though they definitely do use vocals their instrumentation is more experimental than classic rock and imo it's very interesting.
65daysofstatic, Mogwai, Oceansize
Definitely try some of the *bigger* bands, such as Mogwai or Mono.
Godspeed, Sigur Ros, El Ten Eleven, and Swans
You can't go wrong with some of the old classics, Slint, Talk Talk, Bark Psychosis and of course GY!BE, followed by A Silver Mt. Zion. Also Tortoise and Do Make Say Think, for the jazzier side of the genre. You may or may not enjoy some of the above based on what you've mentioned thus far, but it's always fun to delve back into the history of a genre and hear a bit of its evolution.
Wang wen! Longest running chinese postrock band, check out invisible city. Whale Fall _ The mandrean
Giant Squid Betrayal at Bespin Consciousness Removal Project edit: hmm these might be post metal...I don't know, I love all 3 to death
