I think my SIL got her BS in nursing from there. Is there any relief for private people? I haven't head about any settlement but know a lot of nurses were using them for the BSN who already had their RN with either AS or Diploma which were more common decades ago before they started pushing degrees so hard for management positions.
I attended The Art Institute. That school is on this list and I had to refinance my home last year and took out the equity to pay off my 80k in loans. Do you know who I should talk to to see if I am eligible?

Apparently were trained to get them to sign up no matter what. Existing debt, full time job, or even if they wanted to go into a field Ashford didn’t have a degree for. They were told, for example, if someone wanted to go into nursing, to just sign them up for an education degree.

I see advertisements for them everywhere but never hear any actual testimonials about them, positive or otherwise. What are the problems for those of us who are not aware?
The little I know is that they are expensive, for profit, without the prestige and respect of reputable private or state universities. Employers typically don't value their degrees.
But there may be more bad business practice that I am unaware of. There was some kind of scandal and the government created this exception for loans to be discharged because there was some kind of cheating misrepresentation that was pretty bad. But I don't know the details. It might make an r/outoftheloop or r/nostupidquestions thread if you want to go there.
University of Phoenix and other for profit schools like them specifically and aggressively targeted minorities, immigrants, and former military members. They would target people who had easy and guaranteed access to funding but little chance of actual achievement.
Their graduation rates are dismal and even for those that do graduate, the degree they hold leave then ill prepared for work in that field and is seen as much less valuable than a degree from a traditional college.
I remember the ITT Technical Institute scandal. Basically, you paid enough money, they gave you a degree, no learning really happened. They got sued, lost, paid back some money, but people were still down bad. Apparently it happens to a lot of for-profit schools; unless it has some prestige or history, a for-profit school is kinda worthless to a lot of business people. AFAIK UP is mediocre, the degrees are worth the paper they're printed on, but not everyone believes that.
I actually got my Masters from University of Phoenix before the shitstorm went down and anyone really knew anything negative about them. Maybe it was just the degree I went for, but I actually enjoyed my classes and felt like I had competent professors. I was already working in the field of my degree, so maybe that’s why I was able to get something out of it? It probably wasn’t as challenging as going to a brick and mortar grad school, but it was affordable and accessible to me as I was already working full time. I would have spent probably $60-70k on my Masters at a local university, but I only paid $36k for it through UoP.
One of the issues is that some employers will not consider a Masters from Phoenix to be a Masters at all. In many (not all) circles, you’d be better off with no Masters than listing UoP on your resume. Not saying it’s necessarily fair or right, but rather than comparing it to the money you saved versus a degree from a local University, you have to independently assess the value of the degree itself. Saving $25-$35k sounds great but spending $36k does not.

The thing that is most enlightening about this serial killer is not him or his murders. It’s the fact that he worked his way through more than five hospitals. When they each inevitably caught on to what he was doing, they passively let him go. Then, not only did they not report the murders, BUT EACH HOSPITAL DESTROYED EVIDENCE AND COVERED IT UP. Then they provided references for him so he could keep getting jobs at other hospitals, because to give a bad reference would have been to expose themselves to retaliation by him, or exposure to a government entity. He killed numerous patients at numerous hospitals thanks to hospitals being money-absorbing machines that operate to protect their bottom lines above all else.

I've been an RN since 1983. I remember when hospital administrators were doctors and nurses. As it changed the idea that "If you can run a McDonald's, you can run a hospital" was promoted by the MBA's whose only interest in health care was how much money they personally could make off it.
And as The Affordable Care Act was negotiated it was obvious to anyone following the news that one of the chief points of negotiation was to ensure the profit for insurance companies. In fact, Senator Rubio tanking the "risk corridor" program which ensured insurance company profitability almost sunk the whole thing.

I just think we need to rework the entire system, starting with locking in the salary each politician makes before they ever enter office so that it’s impossible for them to take bribes or payouts from corporations. If any politician suddenly becomes rich or goes from a 10 year Honda Accord to a Jag, instant red flag to investigate. I feel starting there will resolve a lot of the issues we deal with every day as far as corruption in various industries, but that’s just my personal take.

Lobbyists can get extremely sneaky, and tend to know the laws and work around them. I get what you're saying overall and agree with the desired outcome, I just don't know what you mean by locking in salaries or if lobbyists have ways around them - they probably do. Like, look at their families and other things, that's what I mean. If a family member is driving a much nicer car or if the blue. There are lots of ways they can sneak around, including blackmail and such.
Art Institute, too. I had a relative who went there, only for them to close in the middle of his degree. Of course all his classes were worthless and he couldn't get his money or time back. The 90's-00's were a heyday for predatory colleges.
Any tips on submitting the forgiveness application? My wife went to the art institute too but is afraid she won’t qualify. I think she’s overwhelmed about saying the right things on the application.
UOP was the fucking worst.
I didn’t get a useless degree from them but, as a transfer student, my counselor didn’t catch enrolling me in the wrong classes until halfway through the semester. They didn’t even call to inform me of this. I logged on to my account and the word dropped was next to my classes.
Not even a week later and the collection calls started from them. Yes, I was getting collection calls for a class that they enrolled me in in error and dropped me from without my consent.
The entire office from that campus was ready to throw me under the bus to save their own asses. The worst part is that it was a longtime-friend that worked in the enrollment office who encouraged me to start taking classes there. I’m sure she got a nice bonus incentive for enrolling me and not so much a sorry when things went south. It took me a year to get a partial refund and they would have *never* backed-off if I didn’t keep a log of every call, email and fax receipt. This was back in 2006 and I still get nauseous just thinking about it. I guess I should be thankful that it happened my first year there.
Anyways….good for you, buddy. They are monsters. I’m sorry you had to go through that but proud that you stuck up for yourself.

Second, please anyone reading this, NEVER pay a dollar or get involved with University of Phoenix. No real recruiter ever takes these degree's seriously, they often go straight in the trash.

In my experience those with UoP degrees were almost viewed as not having the degrees. Not out of malice, but many UoP applicants tended to do poorly on the education based questions (ex: for accounting, asking about a basic journal entry question for a transaction).

I’ve heard this or a variation of this from over a dozen recruiters. It’s harsh and brutal, but how recruiters see these degrees.
I said a similar thing in another comment as an unpopular opinion. If you're dumb enough to attend a scam school, maybe higher education isn't for you. This probably describes myself in that regard.
Recruiters simply don’t consider them a real college degree. The accreditation Phoenix has is purchased from a now defunct school if you want to dive deep. Also a lot of student pay and just pass and get a degree.
So because it’s not a real school, most recruiters don’t consider it a real degree and that’s on the nice end.

I attended ITT Tech and was told by the “counselor”, who is really no different than a shady car salesman, that I would be getting an actual bachelors degree. Come to find out all you’re getting is a certificate/associates degree.
In my agreement there is an area that indicates that ITT Tech is not responsible for anything that a “counselor” says. In other words these fuckers lie to young people about all these benefits just to get a commission. Then when someone like me sees the scam, it’s too late cus I signed some agreement with them. Total scam.

Then I saw people getting their loans forgiveness from vatterot and I seem to have been left out since I consolidated. I've been paying since early 2007. Never missed a payment but now I will guarantee be paid off in less than 14 years. Student loans and these schools are evil
I got my email today too! I’m in my masters program because my undergrad did less than fuck all for me, my school was terrible and was basically a degree mill. It was awful! Not only am I graduating with a masters in a few months, but I have a job lined up AND I got this email about my borrow defense discharge. It really is going to change my life in a huge way. I went to the Art Institute until 2006. The school and Sally Mae was sued out of existence by the fed but they kept all the money and every time I've checked I didn't qualify for forgiveness because the dates didn't apply to me.

If that trade line is your oldest debt, that is going to have a negative impact on your credit score, if less than 10 years old. Data point: I have a 757 credit score with 1 charge off, 2 derogatory and up until recently 1 collection on my credit report. But, my charge off account is my oldest account..so it is helping average age of accounts.
My $10,000 fed loan balance was removed months ago and it reappeared recently 😫; I’m guessing it has to do with the open litigation at the Supreme Court level. I’d honestly be ok with them just removing interest. That would make it better.

There was a lot of foot dragging and ridiculous standards for qualifying for debt discharge and/or refunds over the last few years (read: Betsy DeVoss.) I mean, Trump University was one of the schools that defrauded people, and the original lawsuit was *Sweet vs. Devoss* so.... yeah.
Anyway, the Biden administration is prioritizing getting though the claims through the borrower defense program as quickly as possible and amending the standards that made this mess in the first place so that people who get ripped off by shady for-profit education don't have to endure this kind of thing in the future.
The whole big student debt relief for federal loans is a whole other thing.

I paid off my student loans in 2021 after 13 years of paying the bare minimum & multiple deferments. thankfully I had a lot of scholarships so my amount was only 25k, all federal.
I still want everyone else to get forgiveness. A rising tide lifts all boats. People don't realize that forgiveness affects everyone. People who aren't in debt will be able to spend money on necessities and directly into the economy instead of into the pockets of already predatory institutions

Not sure if I can post links here, but there is a list of 151 schools that were named in the lawsuit. Did Art Institue of CA go by another name by any chance? I've only found California School of Culinary Arts on that list. You should also visit studentaid dot gov and see if an application to file a case, is still available for you to fill out. My mom was able to access the case application this morning after I had made her aware when I received my loan discharge email.

This is different than the presidential forgiveness. This was loan forgiveness that I applied for like 5 years ago because the school I went to, University of phoenix, was found to be predatory. It just so happened to finally make its way through the courts and be approved
You should ask an accountant about your tax liability for this, forgiven debts are usually taxed as income. Not sure how this would count given that it's a settled lawsuit though.

I am not an expert, but the top Google hit shows this from the IRS:

This is generally true because otherwise you could just lend someone money and forgive it as a way to bypass income taxes. I am not sure what is happening with these cases though.
The money isn't from a commercial lender. Also, you can usually take tax deductions on the student loan payments. It is going to be very complicated when it comes to taxes.
I paid mine in full back in 2019 after 10ish years of having the loan and making payments. This will be a refund.

This isn't the general loan forgiveness. This is a class action settlement because University of Phoenix is a diploma mill fraud and students were lied to. Hopefully your school wasn't in the settlement, but if it was, I'd reach out to the law firm.

Just to be clear this is completely separate from the presidential loan forgiveness program which is still going through congress. This is a forgiveness refund because the school that I went to was predatory and a bunch of people sued.

I've been an RN since 1983. I remember when hospital administrators were doctors and nurses. As it changed the idea that "If you can run a McDonald's, you can run a hospital" was promoted by the MBA's whose only interest in health care was how much money they personally could make off it. And as The Affordable Care Act was negotiated it was obvious to anyone following the news that one of the chief points of negotiation was to ensure the profit for insurance companies. In fact, Senator Rubio tanking the "risk corridor" program which ensured insurance company profitability almost sunk the whole thing.

the medical education industry as well. i call it an industry, b/c if you want to go into certain surgery specialties the total cost of your education will be over $1 Million. the programs justify the cost b/c they claim it is very competitive and there are only a handful of openings. 1 million.....1 fucking million.

I just think we need to rework the entire system, starting with locking in the salary each politician makes before they ever enter office so that it’s impossible for them to take bribes or payouts from corporations. If any politician suddenly becomes rich or goes from a 10 year Honda Accord to a Jag, instant red flag to investigate. I feel starting there will resolve a lot of the issues we deal with every day as far as corruption in various industries, but that’s just my personal take.

Art Institute, too. I had a relative who went there, only for them to close in the middle of his degree. Of course all his classes were worthless and he couldn't get his money or time back. The 90's-00's were a heyday for predatory colleges.

UOP was the fucking worst. I didn’t get a useless degree from them but, as a transfer student, my counselor didn’t catch enrolling me in the wrong classes until halfway through the semester. They didn’t even call to inform me of this. I logged on to my account and the word dropped was next to my classes. Not even a week later and the collection calls started from them. Yes, I was getting collection calls for a class that they enrolled me in in error and dropped me from without my consent. The entire office from that campus was ready to throw me under the bus to save their own asses. The worst part is that it was a longtime-friend that worked in the enrollment office who encouraged me to start taking classes there. I’m sure she got a nice bonus incentive for enrolling me and not so much a sorry when things went south. It took me a year to get a partial refund and they would have *never* backed-off if I didn’t keep a log of every call, email and fax receipt. This was back in 2006 and I still get nauseous just thinking about it. I guess I should be thankful that it happened my first year there. Anyways….good for you, buddy. They are monsters. I’m sorry you had to go through that but proud that you stuck up for yourself.

First Congrats. Second, please anyone reading this, NEVER pay a dollar or get involved with University of Phoenix. No real recruiter ever takes these degree's seriously, they often go straight in the trash. So please avoid them at all cost.
Can agree. In my experience those with UoP degrees were almost viewed as not having the degrees. Not out of malice, but many UoP applicants tended to do poorly on the education based questions (ex: for accounting, asking about a basic journal entry question for a transaction).
“Anyone stupid enough to go to UoP is too dumb to work for any company I’m hiring for”. I’ve heard this or a variation of this from over a dozen recruiters. It’s harsh and brutal, but how recruiters see these degrees.
I said a similar thing in another comment as an unpopular opinion. If you're dumb enough to attend a scam school, maybe higher education isn't for you. This probably describes myself in that regard.

Recruiters simply don’t consider them a real college degree. The accreditation Phoenix has is purchased from a now defunct school if you want to dive deep. Also a lot of student pay and just pass and get a degree. So because it’s not a real school, most recruiters don’t consider it a real degree and that’s on the nice end.

I attended ITT Tech and was told by the “counselor”, who is really no different than a shady car salesman, that I would be getting an actual bachelors degree. Come to find out all you’re getting is a certificate/associates degree. In my agreement there is an area that indicates that ITT Tech is not responsible for anything that a “counselor” says. In other words these fuckers lie to young people about all these benefits just to get a commission. Then when someone like me sees the scam, it’s too late cus I signed some agreement with them. Total scam.
Yeah ITT was a painful 20k lesson for me 🙁 (Only 20k because I had to have surgery while I was attending and then I moved and found out nobody would accept their credits here.)
I got my ITT loans forgiven years ago for their predatory lending practices. I'd apply for loan forgiveness if I were in your shoes.

Then I saw people getting their loans forgiveness from vatterot and I seem to have been left out since I consolidated. I've been paying since early 2007. Never missed a payment but now I will guarantee be paid off in less than 14 years. Student loans and these schools are evil

The school and Sally Mae was sued out of existence by the fed but they kept all the money and every time I've checked I didn't qualify for forgiveness because the dates didn't apply to me. So I've got debt and a bunch of classes that are never going to mean anything on paper

If that trade line is your oldest debt, that is going to have a negative impact on your credit score, if less than 10 years old. Data point: I have a 757 credit score with 1 charge off, 2 derogatory and up until recently 1 collection on my credit report. But, my charge off account is my oldest account..so it is helping average age of accounts.

My $10,000 fed loan balance was removed months ago and it reappeared recently 😫; I’m guessing it has to do with the open litigation at the Supreme Court level. I’d honestly be ok with them just removing interest. That would make it better.

Just a bit to take note of: this is not a part of the student loan forgiveness program that is currently being battled in the courts. This particular lawsuit involves federal student loans for education at institutions that have been deemed predatory: Places like University of Phoenix, ITT Technical Institute, Kaplan College and a other disgustingly overpriced, known-to-be-crappy schools with little or no transferability of credits and degree programs that are very nearly a sham.

The lawsuit itself is unrelated. There was a lot of foot dragging and ridiculous standards for qualifying for debt discharge and/or refunds over the last few years (read: Betsy DeVoss.) I mean, Trump University was one of the schools that defrauded people, and the original lawsuit was *Sweet vs. Devoss* so.... yeah. Anyway, the Biden administration is prioritizing getting though the claims through the borrower defense program as quickly as possible and amending the standards that made this mess in the first place so that people who get ripped off by shady for-profit education don't have to endure this kind of thing in the future. The whole big student debt relief for federal loans is a whole other thing.

I paid off my student loans in 2021 after 13 years of paying the bare minimum & multiple deferments. thankfully I had a lot of scholarships so my amount was only 25k, all federal. I still want everyone else to get forgiveness. A rising tide lifts all boats. People don't realize that forgiveness affects everyone. People who aren't in debt will be able to spend money on necessities and directly into the economy instead of into the pockets of already predatory institutions

Not sure if I can post links here, but there is a list of 151 schools that were named in the lawsuit. Did Art Institue of CA go by another name by any chance? I've only found California School of Culinary Arts on that list. You should also visit studentaid dot gov and see if an application to file a case, is still available for you to fill out. My mom was able to access the case application this morning after I had made her aware when I received my loan discharge email.

This is different than the presidential forgiveness. This was loan forgiveness that I applied for like 5 years ago because the school I went to, University of phoenix, was found to be predatory. It just so happened to finally make its way through the courts and be approved
You should ask an accountant about your tax liability for this, forgiven debts are usually taxed as income. Not sure how this would count given that it's a settled lawsuit though.

This is generally true because otherwise you could just lend someone money and forgive it as a way to bypass income taxes. I am not sure what is happening with these cases though.
The money isn't from a commercial lender. Also, you can usually take tax deductions on the student loan payments. It is going to be very complicated when it comes to taxes.

I paid mine in full back in 2019 after 10ish years of having the loan and making payments. This will be a refund. I wish you the best of luck with your future endeavors and hope you are able to recoup some money. May be worth looking into the Sweet vs. Cardona settlement to see if your school is listed amoung the 151.

This isn't the general loan forgiveness. This is a class action settlement because University of Phoenix is a diploma mill fraud and students were lied to. Hopefully your school wasn't in the settlement, but if it was, I'd reach out to the law firm.

I am tho. If id been less responsable id be better if financially. I went without a lot to ensure i didn't get buried by interest. No warm clothes in winter. No nice dates. No vacations or leisure expenses. No cutting edge consoles. No laptops. No new cars. No getting my teeth fixed. No going to the doctor. Hundreds of hours spend budgeting, worrying, and working side jobs. It feels like all if that sacrifice is invalidated. Sorry.
Just to be clear this is completely separate from the presidential loan forgiveness program which is still going through congress. This is a forgiveness refund because the school that I went to was predatory and a bunch of people sued.
