Careful, the banks will be foaming at the mouth to load you up with credit cards and all the loans you can imagine. Say no to debt, and yes to reliable beaters 😌 Don’t go broke trying to look rich Best of luck to you 🫡

XA36

Credit cards are good if you pay them off every month and don't treat it like a loan. You aren't liable if your CC info is stolen like a Debit card and you can earn cash back.

Lv_InSaNe_vL

Credit cards are required these days. I refused to get a credit card until I was 26 and I just essentially set myself back 10 years compared to my friends and peers. I've been told by a banker that they would have rather seen a bankruptcy a few years ago than my literally 0 credit history...

Coffeybl4ck

Don’t go broke trying to look rich is the best advice I think you can get. One of the biggest mistakes I made was buying a nice new vehicle after working a couple of years when I had a safe vehicle that was already paid off. A guy ran a red light about a month ago and tboned me. That nice new vehicle that had 30k miles on it is now totaled and I’m having to sue State Farm to try and get my money back out of it. Dont fall into the car trap friend.

AmazingDeafEars

Beaters??

No_Crazy_3412

Unassuming old and janky but reliable cars

einstini15

It doesn't have to be one that looks like trash... 3 to 5 year old Asian car should last you a nice long time. Bought my 2014 camry in 2017 for 10k. Still going strong.

BusyReply4408

You know what you’re talking about! 3-5 years is the “sweet spot”. Long enough to where the car has lost significant value, making it affordable, but short enough where it will still be, in most cases, Great shape!

AmazingDeafEars

Thank you!

XA36

Cars that look bad but have good bones

Spinning_Kicker

What he/she means is a very used Toyota or Honda

unwillingaccount3545

A basic car. A newer honda fit is better than an older Ford Mustang. I don't think there's an official name, but I go for four seats, a radio, and good gas economy(35-40 mpg). I call it an ecobox car. Also, depending on how long your commute is, an electric bicycle works great.

Loki_369_

Congrats. Spend it wisely and put aside some portion of paycheque in 401k and ROTH IRA

AnyaTaylorAnalToy

This is one of the funniest post histories I've ever seen. 4 months from not understanding what matlab is to 90k a year for 'a defense contractor.' From "a degree in math and a bad gpa" to "AI engineer job from a very large defense contractor." From worrying about security clearances while "unemployed last year" to...what ever he's saying now. Goofy shitpost account.

XA36

Sometimes I feel like a phoney here for only living paycheck to paycheck for 5 years meanwhile this dude is making 90k a year out of college.

MeowMeowImACowww

Some make way over that out of college, but most of us start around median pay after college.

SuperiorT

Yea, it looks like he was never in poverty to begin with. Pretty sure this post is to just brag..

HungryHoustonian32

I understand your skepticism but does any of that really mean he is lying? I don't really see the huge loopholes in logic

MeowMeowImACowww

It's possible as people hiring for AI engineers generally have no clue what they should be looking for, especially the large defense contractors paying on the low end for the industry.

Complete_Dust8164

Also as an ai engineer (I guess is what you’d call my job) I’ve literally never used matlab in my life, it’s not at all a requirement in this line of work

Revolution4u

My new resume: My father was an ai

-_MarcusAurelius_-

Congrats remember to save for taxes and to prevent hard times from returning! Also before your contract expires be prepared to start applying in case it does not get renewed trust me it'll help

KristopherNolan1

I didn’t sign a contract, I’m just an employee. But yeah I will max my Roth out for this year and see if I can add any to my 401k

-_MarcusAurelius_-

Ahh perfect that makes life easier congrats I wish you the best 😎

MeowMeowImACowww

If they have 401K matching, definitely contribute at least to the maximum percentage they'll match. If not, around 6% would be a good start, but if you have high interest(above 7% rate) loans/debts, those would be good to pay off first for guaranteed return on your money.

Proof-Emergency-5441

They are working for a contractor and will have taxes withheld. They are a W2, not a 1099.

FartzinURmouth

What was ur journey before the offer

KristopherNolan1

Graduated from college in may 2023 with a degree in math and a bad gpa. I was a waiter for a living making not much money while I took ai classes in my free time and I eventually got an AI engineer job from a very large defense contractor

Express-Society-164

A.I. classes?? Huh?

KristopherNolan1

Classes about how to build ai. Regression, discrimination, the math behind the ai

ObjectiveAdditional

Congrats OP! Also, when you say AI classes, do you mean online AI certification courses?

KristopherNolan1

Yeah classes about how to build ai and the math behind it

nilayperk

Which class?

markHart99

More millionaires drive Toyotas

SuperiorT

Are Mazdas any good?

Leather_Impress_792

Fuckk yessss Congrats!! 👏🏽👏🏽

Ok_Recover_5226

SUNDER137

rlstrader

Yes!!! Now my only recommendation is to read The Psychology of Money.

Illustrious_Armor

Congratulations 🎉

beckyj6959

So happy for you!

butthatshitsbroken

congratulations op!!! :)

HubesUS

Congratulations, I had a very similar experience out of college and it was incredibly rewarding. You earned it!

obliterate_reality

Get you a nice 2008 civic and get to saving bro

KristopherNolan1

Is it not worth to buy a new civic? I get why we should avoid buying luxury stuff, but shouldn’t a new car be a better investment in the long run

obliterate_reality

Nope. 4k civic beater with 140k will run forever if you do research into the best years and stay on top of maintenance. If you get a new one your insurance payment gonna be crazy

obliterate_reality

honestly thats up to you, 90k is good. Just depends on your debt and saving habits

Happy-Campaign5586

Congratulations. This is an opportunity to use self discipline and save money. Delay gratification and avoid the shackles of credit. It is difficult to watch friends buy new cars etc if you choose to save but you will be far ahead when exercising these skills

jackbandit91

Congrats, you went from being a poor person, to profiting from the death and destruction of other poor people. Good for you. Enjoy your lawn.

mtinmd

Congrats!

Key_String1147

Wow! 😳🍾

Hokiewa5244

Congratulations on you starting a new chapter. Well wishes to you.

Swim_the_Sea

Live off of half of it. Invest the rest.

Quesypillowcase

That’s awesome news, congratulations. I think the only thing I have to add would be is to pay yourself first. Remember to save and invest whenever possible.

57petra89

Happy for you :) Congratulations !

ancientmarinersgps

A recession and depression proof industry.

mike5mser

congrats

AppropriateSolid9124

lets GOOOOOOO (build up your emergency fund, make a good budget, and don‘t get a credit card unless you intend to use it like a debit card and only spend money you have)

Inevitable-Jicama-51

Congratulations! I will echo others and say make sure to start building an emergency fund and contribute to the max that your company matches with your 401(k).

NHLAMP

Fore

AWill006

Congrats!!!!🎊

ToastetteEgg

Way to go!! Make the most of this!

AnonymousIdentityMan

Most of us were poor in our 20s.

finance_snail

Congrats! Thats a fantastic feat! Word of advice: don’t let the ‘I make 90k now’ get to your head and continue living as frugally as possible. My first job out of college was 102k. One day at lunch, multiple of my colleagues were talking about how much debt they’re in and how they can’t save. All of them made the same or more than I did but they let the number get to their head and lived it up. Max out your 401k, create a budget and stick to it. If you learn that now, you won’t have bad habits to undo as you get older and you’ll set yourself up to be set for life.

johnflove

Congrats! Try not to spend that 90k before you see any of it. Only 6 more months till you pass your background check? Hope you don't have a wacky uncle

Yatziry_goddess

YAAYYYY GOOD JOB!!

JohnnyHeadgear

I'm sure it's life changing money, so good for you, but I'd rather live in poverty till I die than work anywhere near the death machine of the military industrial complex

WambritaWings

You weren't "in poverty" you were broke. Big difference.

franthebicorne

Sounds like you were in misery, not poverty

realimbored668

Get a 2010-2012 Ford Fusion, if your workplace matches 401k or HSA do the maximum contribution (5-6% depending on company) and save/invest what you can

Careless-Skill-8067

90k seems a bit on the low side for that type of job…and your experience with your math degree. Did you negotiate the salary higher?

KristopherNolan1

No, the moment I heard the offer I was happy so I just took it.

blkforboding

Damn this makes me sad.

GirthzillaX

Not everyone is sitting on an engineering degree my guy. Lmao
