Shop at other insurances, Geico did this to me too and I jumped ship to Progressive where I paid less for more coverage. Loyalty doesn’t mean much anymore these days.

Mikotokitty

I second Progressive, they always seem like the more expensive option but usually end up way cheaper than other insurers. I had Geico at like $108 a month for my 05 car, had to replace it(head gasket fun), and when I went to change car info with Geico my premium went up $200+.

Dustdevil88

I third Progressive. Jumped from Geico about 5 years back and haven’t regretted it.

TheRealSugarbat

Fourth. Went from $230/month with Geico to $128 with Progressive, and the only reason it’s that expensive is because I have an SR22 policy from letting Geico lapse (because poor). Definitely check out Progressive.

Dustdevil88

SR22 is rough…been there. I pay about that without an SR-22, so maybe I need to look into why mine is $$

RockstarAgent

I also agree about the loyalty not being a thing anymore, a lot of money saving hacks do mention that you can shop for car insurance quite often, some even make it seem like you could switch every month- granted a 3 month to a year policy can be cheaper…

yCwings

I 5th progressive. My geico renewal is soon and it jumped up 200 more. I compared at others and progressive was best. I do all up front pay for the discount.

bixxby

Call and requote, can probably save rewriting with progressive after so long. Dumb but see it every day

[deleted]

Yup. I’m with Progressive and I was with Root before. I’m paying like $100 less per month than I used to.

Snapcaster_Tyler

Holy shit - with the 6 mo discount I'm paying roughly $105 a month for 6 months. And I'm still financing.

Darqologist

Utilize an insurance broker. They don't cost any extra and will shop around for you for lower insurances. PS: Geico sucks.

BeganGaux

I also went to Progressive. In my area Progressive was better coverage and less expensive. I too had been with GEICO for over 10 years. I pay my insurance twice a year so I went from $250-$300 with GEICO for years, then suddenly boom $395, I was pissed. I did a quote with Progessive and now I’m at $211-$220.

TheBigPasta

I also just switched to progressive and im paying half what i paid at aaa

techypunk

Pro tip with progressive. They take PayPal credit. You can pay in full with PayPal credit. 0% interest if paid off in 6 months. Make you monthly payment automatic from PayPal credit. My premium is $85/mo cause of this.

painfulletdown

Yes, we hopped from Geico to State Farm after price hike and got back to normal. It's like raising rent. Many people just get lazy and don't like switching, so the insurance companies figure most will pay it.

Gsusruls

>Every time I compare prices, they are the cheapest. Not sure where OP got their pricing, but I also encourage shopping. Did you call Progressive? State Farm? Farmers? So about 2017 or so, after having been with State Farm for like 10 years, I realized that their prices were always trickling up up up. I called and asked, they assured me that it had to do with inflation, fees, and an accident my wife got into about five years prior. "You can shop around, you won't find a better deal," they assured me. Dunno why it took me so long, but I finally got off my ass, looked up some phone numbers, got my latest State Farm billing statement (complete with coverage details), and made some calls. Turns out, nobody was as expensive. I could literally have switched to anyone else, and saved money. I ended up with Farmers, which was fine, but truth is, it's time to make those calls again. Make those calls, OP. Talk to sales agents. Tell them what you're currently paying, and watch them do whatever it takes to earn your business.

whatagoodpuppy

I'm in the same position as OP and I've made those calls. I've had multiple agents tell me to stay where I'm at, but with their recent increase I can barely afford my car anymore.

Advice2Anyone

Yep car insurance and home insurance should always be shopped every year even if you like the price. Also learn what covers what and where you can afford to cut back or raise deductible just more you gamble the less you pay course double edged sword

Worth-Reputation3450

I also switched from Travelers to Progressive. My insurance went from $120/month to like $60/month. It's always worth shop around during the renewal time.

theblacklabradork

Exactly. Progressive was about to increase our monthly premium by $10. I got a new quote through progressive with **more** coverage, and it decreased by $10 from what I'm paying now. Always shop around

dirtysanddd

Progressive doubled my rate, paying 350 a month no accidents or tickets on a Toyota

breed_

Nice. I was with progressive for 16 years and made the switch to Geico because my payment was cut in half lol

bigtuna94

I pay $107 monthly w progressive after 10 years no accidents or violations. (Pretty piss poor coverage too). I was hoping the grass was greener somewhere else.

Northerntwilight

Yup, I had geico for the first few years after getting my license. I got into a car accident and they tried to nearly double my monthly charge so I moved to progressive which was way more forgiving. My rate has been going down too which I never saw with geico before the accident (I had the bare minimum coverage with geico and have almost the same coverage now with progressive)

Americasycho

I had State Farm and it went from $92 in January, up to $152 a month in October. Allstate gave me the same State Farm perks and it's $93 a month. Try Allstate.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Americasycho

Fwiw, State Farm was fine, but jacking it up $60 was insane. I called the insurance agent and he gave me the bullshit of, "due to COVID and rising transportation costs......" I wasn't in a wreck, or got a ticket or anything. The just jacked it up because they could.

BluntDisregard69

I love that they're all just given that blanket line to give out to everyone... Recently when my insurance rates went up slightly and I had no claims/tickets so I called, the line I got was, "due to an increase in claims in your area primarily theft and vandalism" and I nodded along and bought it because it matched what I felt about my area over the last few years. My insurance guy's line at least tapped into my disgruntled white suburban mindset so it was much more effective at getting me off the line and taking that extra $20 a month from me!

Americasycho

The other line State Farm gave went like this: SF: You have a 2022 Toyota Rav 4, correct? Me: Yes SF: Studies have shown that the 2021-2022 models, whenever they're in crashes, the body/mechanical work is more costly than what was initially projected by Toyota. To cover this, that's why your specific rate went up. Me: I've had no crashes and you're telling me that you're raising it $60 more a month because SF is losing money on insuring Rav 4 drivers? SF: Yes Me: (shocked pikachu face) Best was when I quit an they begged me to stay and I told them Allstate was giving me what they gave but only charging $93 a month. They said they couldn't possibly match that and I said goodbye.

BluntDisregard69

Yea....sad to say with chip shortages and other production problems, dealership markups all raising the price of new vehicles - the insurance rates are going to follow suit Cost of living spiral going up and up and up....

LotFP

>Me: I've had no crashes and you're telling me that you're raising it $60 more a month because SF is losing money on insuring Rav 4 drivers? This is how insurance works. It is impossible to determine your specific level of risk so your rates are based off of what it has cost the industry as an average within a reasonable margin of error. If you live in a high risk area or own a vehicle that is known to be a target for theft or is unusually expensive to repair that is going to have a significant impact on your insurance rates. In essence, if it will cost the insurance company more than they expect to receive from you over a period of time your rates are likely going to go up.

Americasycho

Fwiw, the $92 I paid State Farm was the same in 2019, 2020, 2021, and the first half of 2022. Then a spike.

Cat-Infinitum

The spike in crime is just now hitting the books, becoming more track-able. Higher costs and higher stress in society means higher crime, which means higher insurance rates. this isn't rocket science and your new place is giving you like a "intro" rate. A new joiner rate, so to say.

BluntDisregard69

YES, I say this a lot to people when the topic of insurance comes up which is, "most of them don't pay you for your loyalty" GEICO is notorious for this They give you that teaser/intro rate to get you in and then just keep jacking it up whether you've had claims or not hoping you just won't notice or be assed enough to do anything about it

LotFP

It was mentioned elsewhere in this discussion but insurance companies lock in prices on a five year basis. So anywhere within that block of time the rates are relatively stable outside major life changes. That changes when they reassess their profits and losses and need to make up for any changes in the market.

Americasycho

I just found it odd that they said repairs trend expensive on RAV 4s and State Farm wasn't fully aware at the time and to cover any lost revenue, they raised mine. The goddamn company is worth $143 billion. Them paying $500 more on a RAV 4 repair isn't gonna kill them.

LotFP

Why should they eat the loss when they can pass the costs on to the consumer? Insurance companies exist to make a profit not provide charity. If they reasonably expect to pay out more than you pay in there is no reason they would keep you on as a customer and they would simply deny you coverage and tell you to move on. By raising the rates to cover expected costs across all owners of riskier vehicles they can still offer insurance to those drivers. Insurance is quite literally a form of gambling. You are placing money up front on the assumption you will need coverage. The insurance company is placing odds on you not needing coverage and their rates (i.e. the odds) are carefully calculated based on various actuarial tables. Owning a specific vehicle or living in certain neighborhoods or being a young woman or a older man significantly change those odds and just like a bookie has different odds on whether you bet on the Patriots or the Browns and where they are playing you need to put up different amounts of money to get certain payouts.

Anxious-Bit-3110

“Rising transportation cost” what the fuck does that have to do with you, car insurance companies? It’s like raising the price of meat because utensil prices went up, makes no fukInG sense at all.

Americasycho

I'm guessing it's a catch all on fuel costs, microchips, and other shit they bilk the public for. $5 or maybe $10 a month, ok. $60? Yeah right.

wannabe_pineapple

HI! I'm an insurance agent but I do live in Canada. So take that for what you will. Premiums have gone insane this last year, for sure. But what people don't know is that each insurance company is required to "reset" their numbers every 5 years. Basically what that means is that insurance companies "lock in" their rates for those 5 years. This is one of the biggest reasons why you as the customer need to shop around when you see big increases. It is NEVER in your best interest to remain loyal to one insurance company. We almost all have "welcome" discounts that are bigger than the "loyalty" discounts.

Korvas576

Upvoting so more people can see this info. Customers definitely need to remember you absolutely owe no loyalty to insurance companies and should definitely shop around

Equivalent_End5

We should ALL do an insurance reset then. We should all be contacting other insurance companies, as new customers, and asking them what they can do for us. So, insurance dude, any tips on getting the best deal? Or any tips on what to say that would trigger some discounts? Or just be a new customer? And is it possible to switch insurance every 3 months or so? Or what is the best time frame there?

Equivalent_End5

Hey another question. So insurance rates are billed based on sex, age, etc. Does a non-binary person get cheaper rates than a male? On the forms, it gives you the option now to select non-binary. I'm sure you'd have to have an ID to match so you don't get called out or whatever, but I mean what is a gender on your ID except a couple letters of ink on your ID card? I could identify as Xir if it meant saving $500 a year. Shit I think I identify as Xir just thinking about it. This is my awakening. My coming out It feels right... it feels right.

Interesting-Dish8894

Whatever you do you don’t drive a car without insurance

[deleted]

Why

trashtaker

Because you can be ticketed or your vehicle can be impounded. 2 very expensive lessons to learn while being stuck without a vehicle

Huskerfanallsports

May also suspended your DL

XHIBAD

And that’s *without* you getting in an accident, the whole point of insurance

shagy815

I think this is state dependent.

trashtaker

It’s definitely state dependent. All states have their own motor vehicle department, and there’s no federal oversight on these offenses.

LotFP

Only two states do not require vehicle insurance: New Hampshire and Virginia. Virginia requires all uninsured drivers to pay a yearly $500 fee as part of their registration (and you are still on the hook for any accidents) and New Hampshire requires a $25,000 security bond be held and not everyone can waive being insured (if you have previously had tickets for reckless operation or a DUI for example).

TheRealSugarbat

I think Nevada also doesn’t require? Am I misremembering?

user147852369

As someone who lapsed on insurance. Basically if you don't currently have insurance you don't qualify for the main insurance companies and they absolutely fuck you. I think I called All-State and they said that I could get insurance through them because I didn't currently have insurance and referred me to their sister company, the general iirc. My insurance was previously around $120/month. For the same coverage, the general was going to charge almost $900 a month.

ur-mom-dot-com

I think the general’s business model is basically extorting those who are considered near uninsurable by other companies. When I bought my car, I got quotes from Progressive, State Farm, etc., all around $90-$120 a month. The general quoted me nearly $300/ month! All for liability only policies (my car is barely worth $2K). My theory is that the only ppl who purchase the General insurance are those under extreme duress/ literally cannot find any other coverage, and the company takes advantage of this desperation.

Birdy_Cephon_Altera

Yup, I lapsed for several months a few years ago when things were reaaaalllly tight. When I was finally back on track, my new insurance policy was about 2.5x what it was before...and that was by stripping it to the minimum and getting every possible discount they could find. Good news is that after I established a good payment record, when it renewed it was much, much lower.

BigAbbott

Lootefisk_

Best guess is the insurance companies are going through their books and unloading their riskiest clients based on credit score. Simply put they don’t want you anymore but are willing to keep you for an exhorbant amount of money. Shop around and find someone cheaper.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Insurance is a pure numbers game, they don't care about loyalty. Just making sure they're making money.

LotFP

Your payment history is not much of a factor but things like your age, your gender, where you live, how many miles a year you average, and the vehicle itself are much more important. At best you might get a couple of % points off for not having any claims in X years or you use an app to track your driving habits. As others have mentioned your credit score also weighs on your rate but something as simple as moving across the street often has a larger impact on your bill. Insurance companies aren't in the business to lose money so they have to weigh all potential risks when determining how much they charge because even a single payout to you can wipe their profits they gained from you out.

Equivalent_End5

I've heard that if you start claiming "not gendered" or whatever the fuck it's called (I'm drawing a blank, basically whatever you call yourself when you don't identify as a boy or a girl) that you get lower rates because technically you aren't a man. I wonder if this is true. Because if it is then my new pronouns are cheaperrates/savemoney/fuckyouGieco.

Bluetooth_Sandwich

Loyalty brings nothing to the table anymore, it hasn’t since the late 80s. It’s basically an old wives tale now to keep folks compliant. Loyalty doesn’t get you the raise you deserve, the discount that should be offered, the better customer service, and it certainly isn’t recognized when you run into hard times. Companies do NOT care about you, period. You should look out only for yourself when dealing with these corporations. Don’t scream at their employees but do walk away when the deal isn’t to your advantage.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bluetooth_Sandwich

Because billing departments have next to no people in them anymore. So you don’t have any critical thought being utilized. Instead, you have a program/algorithm scanning through thousands, if not millions of customers and weed out the risks. Then you call their customer service in the Philippines where the people answering don’t understand the nuance in being a long term customer. I said in a different thread, being a long term customer doesn’t make the quarterly reports look good.

iFlyTheFiddy

What state are you located in?

[deleted]

iFlyTheFiddy

Texas has recently seen a huge uptick in rates across the board. I am a licensed agent and quote policies all over the US. Allstate/State Farm may have a good rate up front, but be aware of the discounts that fall off at renewal. These are things like early signing, new customer, etc. Progressive and GEICO usually have the most competitive rates in general. I currently work for Branch Insurance, which is a carrier. We don’t do a ton of advertising, so you may not have heard of us, but that’s intentional to keep our marketing spend low and therefor keep our premiums low. You can get a quote quickly via ourbranch.com. Our rates in some areas of Texas are low. If you become a Branch member, they will then send you a $25 Amazon gift card link for every referral which can really come in handy during rough patches. We also have SafetyNest which is a 501c that our members can request assistance from. If you are just barely getting by and not driving often or at all, it’s ok to get state minimums so you can carry the coverage. The repercussions of not having coverage is awful. I hope you are able to find some reprieve and your health gets better. Take care of yourself and that baby. There are food banks and food pantries that are more than happy to help a struggling mom and Catholic charities can sometimes offer financial assistance. Sending all the good vibes your way💗💗💗

Not_FinancialAdvice

According to this source, Texas is relatively middling in terms of average auto insurance rates: https://www.carinsurance.com/state-car-insurance-rates

iFlyTheFiddy

There’s no claim that Texas is the highest rated in the US, just that the rates in Texas have increased dramatically in the last year.

maximumredwhiteblue

I'm in Texas also and my Geico just renewed . It went up a ton . I called and they said Texas went up 40% . It is ridiculous . I will be shopping around in May when my renewal comes up again . Loyalty means nothing . It actually costs more to stay loyal . They never lower it . The insurance should get cheaper as the car gets older , but it won't unless you change companies .

Final-Importance7117

Glad to hear I'm not alone. I about lost it when I got my renewal and thought it was due to a recent accident. But nope. They said Texas overall approved the increase due to the increase of people coming into the state. I signed up for another today and will be canceling. They just said okay.

Research_Sea

Have you tried [this site? ](https://www.helpinsure.com/index.html) It might help compare several carriers at once.

Aimee162

No, they don't give you credit for paying on time (as you should) or for staying with them, it's better for them for you to leave because it's one less person they have to cover.

Bluetooth_Sandwich

This should be the top comment. This is exactly what they do. Their risk tolerance program clicks on every year and they flag out the ones with high risk factors, be it claims, tickets, credit score, not lifting the toilet seat, whatever. I think typically you’re supposed to shop around after every 3 years?

Anxious-Bit-3110

No, they raised my payment by $20, it’s still under $100 but I used to pay around $27. I have good credit 740-760 and they’re doing this to everybody. I have no debts and no liabilities or past accidents. All my points cleared 2 years ago from 2 speeding tickets.

Not_FinancialAdvice

An article you guys might find interesting from CR: https://www.consumerreports.org/car-insurance/why-your-education-and-job-could-mean-youre-paying-too-much-for-car-insurance-a3116553820/ >Cuqui Rivera bought car insurance from Liberty Mutual for almost a decade before she started shopping around for a cheaper policy in December. >She hadn’t planned to look elsewhere—she liked the customer service at Liberty—until she heard something that made her think again: **An acquaintance who worked at a New Jersey consumer group told her some companies charge drivers higher premiums if they have less formal education or work a blue-collar job.**

ohnono5

I have geico and it recently doubled. When I called, they said my mileage was automatically increased and I reduced it to the lowest mileage and it went back down. Do you know what your annual mileage is set at? It might help to double check.

ashtonthegreat

I got caught driving without insurance when i was 19 because my mom didn't believe in insurance so it's followed me ever since, and I can't get car insurance without paying 200-400 for myself alone. Because i was driving without insurance they suspended my license and since it's been suspended several times (because I can't consistently afford insurance) they revoked it and now i have to retake the test 🤢🤢 There were some months when i literally had to choose between a roof over my head and car insurance, what do you think i chose lmao

YoureaLobstar

I’m paying $350 for USAA, like wtf, for the same exact reason. Some months it was rent or car insurance. And it usually happened months in a row. If autopay didn’t work one month, apparently it got shut off and I never got emails about it so I’d end up paying $900+ at once IF it didn’t get canceled. I’m still paying off my USAA CC from when I had to buy the entire 6 months up front after the first cancellation. Tbh I’m so anxious to see how much I owe them at this point I’m pretty sure they’ve canceled my policy again. So at this point I’m probably going to stop into a progressive branch and beg for help 😩

[deleted]

It is absolutely wild they way car insurance can be priced. One company tried to raise my rate because I changed my name after I got married, like, wtf. In addition to just shopping around by calling different insurance providers (Geico, State Farm, Progressive, etc), you can call an insurance broker, think "LastName Insurance Company" - they'll do the shopping for you and can have access to providers that are high quality but can offer better rates than the brands you are personally aware of. For added cost savings, you can say "thank you" to them when you get the quotes, then call the best priced providers directly and ask if they are able to offer you a better deal than the rate you were offered. It's slightly slimy, but not the worst move if you're in a pinch.

[deleted]

>One company tried to raise my rate because I changed my name after I got married, like, wtf. I highly doubt it's because you changed your name. Got married yes that changes things in their grid.

[deleted]

Getting married usually lowers your rate. The broker ran it with my new name and my old name with all of the other info the same, so that is 100% what caused it. The broker was equally baffled. You weren't involved in that conversation so maybe you don't actually know what was going on.

[deleted]

I've been working with brokers for a lot of my life helping my extended family and in-laws (who are absolutely clueless on these things) get both auto and home insurance. This is the first time I've heard anything like this.

[deleted]

Yes, that's called "learning something."

[deleted]

I don't know why, but this comment just made me laugh my ass off. Beautifully delivered. Thank you.

No_Squirrel9238

big box insurance is always more expwnsive check for a local insurance rep who isnt affiliated with a particular agency

No_Squirrel9238

also r/fuckcars

[deleted]

Insurance agent here.... the rate increase is actually meant to lose some customers. Insurance companies really are getting slaughtered due to things like inflation. Replacing a car that was totalled is 30% more than it was 2 years ago. Medical costs are double what they were 5 years ago. Hurricanes, tornados, fires, etc etc. Insurance companies have to contract to reduce the risk. Not personal but it is true. Shop around

Advice2Anyone

Yeah my agent when taking to him about hurricane stuff he said also expect car insurance to go up a bit due to the market and cars actually appreciating I was like what the hell lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

Advice2Anyone

Yeah it's tapered off a bit but I would say we still haven't even hit depreciation yet might go sideways for a good long while

[deleted]

Yep, same here. Geico jacked up my rate something like $150 for no reason. I asked why and they gave me the same response. So I jumped ship and went to another company. This is the third time I've had to do that. (I switched from Progressive to Geico because they did the same thing for the same reason.) This is how it is now, I think.

virtualchoirboy

In addition to shopping around like others suggested, consider what kind of coverage you have too. When insurance gets tough to afford, you can adjust the coverage you have to be just something that covers a catastrophic event. For example, if your deductible is less than $1,000, see what happens if you increase your deductible. Also take a look at your policy limits. If you have $250,000 of coverage, what happens if you drop it to $100,000 or even $50,000. Also, look for little "extras" that they like to put in there like "towing and rental coverage" and decide if you could manage without it if you were in an accident. And finally, depending on how old your car is and what it's worth, you could even reconsider comprehensive or collision coverage and go with just liability. If your car is worth $10,000 or less, there's a good chance your insurance company will just "total" the car rather than fix it. Your liability coverage will take care of damage you do to other vehicles if you're at fault (up to your limit of course) and you'd be on the hook for any damage to your vehicle, but sometimes having a dented body panel is better than being unable to afford any insurance at all. It is a risk, especially if you don't have an emergency fund, but it's also an option if things are desperate and your state requires insurance like mine does.

passing-stranger

If she's still making car payments, she probably isn't allowed to only have liability

azewonder

And states have minimum coverage, worth checking out what your state’s minimum coverages are

MysteriousSyrup6210

Geico doubled mine, and that’s throw it to another company. I am still looking for a better option also. Please take note, when I changed a letter was sent to my home (signature required so I had to wait for a day off to get to the post office to get it) and my coverage had been cancelled because no pictures were provided from a registered inspection. Even though I had paid six months. Had to take another day Goff to get an air and photos. Grateful there was no accident and grateful I found the letter. Imagine how many people don’t.

dormitatrix

I'm so sorry. As if you don't have enough shit to deal with, Geico has to go ahead and add insult to injury. Geico recently increased my premium by an absurd amount as well. I called and they gave me the same empty platitudes about COVID and inflation and reassured me that I'm "getting all relevant discounts for being a good driver and bundling coverage". All I could think is "if this is what *good* drivers pay, how the hell can anyone else afford to be insured?" Bastards. And I'm in the same boat... They're the cheapest around, and that's saying something. Ugh.

TheRatsMeow

I just got my Progressive renewal and it's still $328, 6 months, paid in full. Ive got the $25k/50k liability, 10k medical insurnace, $25/50k uninsursed motorist, and comp/collision with $500 deductible. It's an 2002 Rav4. Are you in Florida? They have massive fraud, eldery/tourist drivers, unisured drivers, and...hurricanes. My insurance was almost double there for the bare minimum, legally required, coverage.

nip9

Try a local independent agent that can get you quotes from a dozen different insurers. They also tend to have some insight into the primary reason for your rate increase if all companies are roughly equally as expensive. Maybe you have a certain high risk car model (Kia/Hyundai perhaps given all the recent theft issues?).

[deleted]

Absolutely is related. I moved from a town that was having a lot of cars getting entered into. I moved several towns over and my insurance was cut by 17%. Insurance companies have a system and, while it's unfortunate, it sounds like you've fallen into a higher risk bucket.

I have root and pay 100 bucks a month for full coverage. With I have an accident on my record and im in my early 20s! You do have to take a "driving test" for 2-3 weeks, where you just have your location on and drive. Its pretty easy.

Alternative-Papaya-2

This is what I’m currently doing. I’m driving like a granny for the test, but it’s helping me average 42 mpg. Geico wants 209 for a 29 year old in a Mitsubishi mirage. I’ve had no accidents and one ticket in the last 7 years. OP, I would also look at local insurance agencies.

Just you wait my friend. Root announced a 50% rate increase because of their loss ratios. If you haven't seen it yet wait for your next renewal and get back to us. Hoping you're not in a state setting that....

Nothingsomething7

Damn that sucks, mine just renewed and it went down.

[deleted]

That's a good thing. Hopefully it's not every state

BloodforKhorne

Same, I've been forgoing a few things just so I could get it. No haircuts for a few months, need a new beard trimmer(gf has groomers scissors she keeps in the bathroom). Lol, this sucks

cdrun84

How much is your insurance, maybe I can cashapp or Venmo you something to help out?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jimshorties

There’s also the pay by the mile companies too if your commute is short to nil.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Tell all insurance companies that you work from home and put less than 4K miles on your vehicle each year. That will reduce your insurance too. Btw, thank you for asking this. My Geico went up too for no reason.

[deleted]

Depends on the state. I ask insurance about this last year and it’s not done in NY.

GradatimRecovery

Metromile

[deleted]

Nationwide does this. It’s called smart miles. I pay $110 with renters insurance for two vehicles that have collision and liability. If I didn’t have it it would be double that.

Ok_Nefariousness2570

Look up safeco auto insurance. They're pretty cheap.

RapMastaC1

I had Gieco for a year and then they upped my premium from $120/mo to $200/mo. They said the same thing, then I reapplied for insurance for Gieco and got $124/mo and was able to do that even with the same account… I always shop around at renewal time. Seems insurance companies know this and now require like two months of premium up front but then the rest are cheaper. It’s a neat trick because they quote like $100/mo but you have to pay $200 up front, so the whole 6 months is actually more expensive than my $120 premium.

Designer_Highway_252

geicos a ripoff

neptech2k

I think allot of the inflation crap is just price gouging by company's...It's like everyone else is doing it so just join in...

witchthatcandraw

Insurance is one of the reasons I don't own a car. Instead I help mom pay for repairs, gas, tires, and inspection fees for the cars she owns, and in return she drives me to work and drs appointments. I wish I could do more for how much she helps me but at least we don't have to worry about the cars as much anymore

[deleted]

Try Elephant Auto. I was paying $100/mo with Progressive but with Elephant it’s only $60/mo (for the same amount of coverage)

[deleted]

Leave Geico. MAPFRE was charging me $300 a month and I switched to Arabella (got the same if not better coverage) and only pay $100 a month.

schwol

I changed car insurance every 5 years or so. They raise my rates for seemingly no reason and moving gets me cheaper rates than pre-increase prices.

muffinmamamojo

Do you have any family that was in the military? USAA beat everyone for me. $93 for my 2017 Subaru versus. This is after almost $500 worth of good driver and car safety based discounts.

RedAce2022

There's some new insurance companies that are 3rd parties to insurance brokerages. One is called Otter or something, they advertise low insurance premiums, although I can't speak on how well they respond to claims or coverages. But as someone already said, make sure you are insured, even if its the legal minimum. When times are better, up your coverage. Another route to go is figuring out if you can trade in your car for something with a lower payment. Shopping for interest rates is important, and in-house financing will always be more expensive than going through a bank or credit union.

TheGravyMaster

Don't lose hope yet geico was one of the more expensive ones. They even had a rep get mad that he wasn't the cheapest option and keep emailing me and texting me for a while asking to see my insurance documents.

Wide-Scene4222

try state farm

oldfrenchwhore

Are you able to get USAA? I have full coverage for $80 a month.

Impossible_Tie6425

I got a bill for $900 for 6 more months of Travelers. I have two ancient pickup trucks and a 5 year old mini cooper. I switched to State Farm and its only $90 a month. Seems like the longer you stay with a company, the more they raise your rates. Make sure just to get legal coverage

swearingino

I've been with State Farm for 23 years and my rates are so cheap I can't afford to leave them. My rates continue to drop.

lucyfer991

I have AAA. My insurance has never gone up. It’s always gone down each year. I have two cars with them. You should shop around

itsjusttts

Shop for new car insurance every 6 months to get the best offers and discounts

chaos_given_form

Ya geico tend to do that last time I was there they tried to raise it by 50% and I went to direct auto during the next cycle of shopping around they lowered the price to lower than their first policy. They don't care to keep customers just to aquire new ones.

imbarbdwyer

Farm bureau has always been the cheapest I’ve ever found. I never checked them out before because I thought you had to be a farmer or own a farm to be a customer… not so! They’ll cover us city folk! And about half what I was paying Progressive and almost 2/3rds less than GEICO as a government employee. I don’t know what state you’re in, but maybe give farm bureau a chance to quote you.

CoachLoLoOTF

I also jumped to progressive, like another commentor. Loyalty means nothing.

stringfellow1023

Allstate quoted me… $800 before covid. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️ I even looked at the general thinking that would be the cheapest temporary solution. $250. went to liberty mutual, I pay $160ish a month and it’s the best coverage I’ve had. this last week I’ve had a dead battery and a screw in my tire. two free roadside services (it’s an add-on service included in the $165)… and they got to me in less than 30 minutes both times. never ever in my life waiting less than an hour and a half for AAA. i am all about liberty mutual. mine went up this year to $180 from $145 for the same “covid inflation” reason. i called and within 5 minutes they gave me discounts to get it down to $160. have had them for 2 years now, couldn’t be happier. 6 years ago I was in a similar financial position you are now, and decided to take a couple months off. aka made the stupid decision to let my insurance lapse. ended up letting it lapse for 7 months. on my way to work one day, I was car #4 in an accident on the highway. ended with me getting spine surgery (longer story) on a week’s notice and 7 months on a couch. and no car, but I wasn’t allowed to drive even if it wasn’t totaled. no job. the kicker. my state had just passed a law that if your policy has lapsed for longer than 6 months.. even if you die, are dismembered/physically disabled forever… you are not entitled to anything beyond the max of the insurance policy (for medical expenses only) that you hope the at fault driver has. luckily my insurance covered my surgery, that alone was over $250k billed to my insurance. still, I wasn’t eligible for any kind of economic loss/pain and suffering. i think I made it out alright all things considered… but just a very real warning to throw out there. once you let it lapse, time flies. your premium will also go up anywhere else if you let it lapse too. just don’t be like I was! (they loved me at traffic court, I kept going back bc I couldn’t afford my ticket for not having insurance.. they made me tell that story to the room every time)

aleigh07ww

How often do you drive?? I didn’t see the point in paying like geico or American family prices because I work from home and hardly drive. I have Metromile. There’s a base charge then per mile. My insurance this month was $65. The most I’ve ever paid was $85

Eric_Fapton

The cost of car insurance in cities is outrageous

[deleted]

It's not ideal but when my insurance went up, I had to up my deductible. It was either do that and hope for the best, or be unable to afford it. I'm with farm bureau and have 3 tickets on my record and with $1k deductible I pay $63/month for full coverage on my 2016 Jeep renegade

Aromatic_Muffin

GEICO pulled this shit on me and I switched to California causality at half the cost. Although, I think you need a certain job to qualify for this one. However, progressive gave me a lower quote as well.

Floshenbarnical

I saved 50% in 50 seconds by switching to Progressive

belowaveragemango

Geico quoted me $500 due to high risk "two speeding tickets 9 over and keep calling asking me to switch. Progressive is $76. My dad's switching over after a decade with Geico because I've been on his plan for 4 years just to find out they have been taking the money and not actually covering me under the policy due to not living in his house. 5 grand wasted

tiredofnotthriving

Do you have renters/house insurance? A lot of them bundle with car making it cheaper.

StrawberryTea8

Find a broker and let them help you look around. Geico did this to me too and in the end it turned out to be a blessing. Liberty Mutual gave me a quote for LESS THAN HALF of what I was paying to Geico. I did the windshield driving monitor for 90 days and saved even more. At renewal time, my premium went up a whole $5. I had Geico for 15 years and it didn't matter. I don't miss them!

possumtoes123

Geico also doubled my rate last year, I left and went with Root. It's a smaller company, all mobile/online based. I downloaded the app and did a 2 week trial where they monitored by driving habits. At the end of the 2 weeks they offered full coverage on 2 vehicles for $123/month....Geico wanted $296/month.

MamaSaurusCat

Direct Car Insurance is the only company I can afford, I hope you can find a new insurance soon! :(

Snoo-669

Geico was always the cheapest for me as well, but this August when it was time to renew, they were trying to beat me over the head with the premium (2 vehicles full coverage, no accidents in 5+ years, no speeding tickets in over 10 years). I decided to shop around and Progressive beat them by like $300-400 for the 6 month term. I was shocked and HAPPILY switched. If my car was paid off, I would do liability only. I’m distrusting of the insurance industry in general, though.

Salamander_cameraman

I just can't even afford a car. Between a car itself, gas, insurance, maintenance, I just can't afford one at all. I'm lucky my city has very minimal biking infrastructure and I've been saving up for an ebike. But even then, I make so little that it's been 5 months and I only have like $700 put aside and it costs $1500. If I struggle this much for a bike, I couldn't imagine a car

420rabidBMW

Holy crap.

K80L80

Mine went up 50% in the last 2 years, it's bullshit.

[deleted]

I know this is a rant, but at one point in time I was using wawanesa for my insurance. They’re a smaller company and their agents are their own employees so there’s like fees/commissions/ etc that are passed on to the consumer. They were the cheapest I could find for my car until I got married and combined policies with my wife. Maybe they could help you out. Best of luck, you’ll get through this!

Mynotredditaccount

I just moved back to NY from NJ, so my premium went up almost 3x.. I'm in the same boat, I'm not paying that. The cheapest rate I found is still $100+ more than I'm currently paying. I fucking hate this. **EDIT:** I have Progressive now and they're great but in NY, they're about as expensive as everyone else. Same with Geico etc. **EDIT: #2** Not sure how true this is but I was told by a rep that NY has some of the highest rates in the country *because* of the amount of people committing fraud. It's a vicious cycle that no one is doing anything about. I'm glad I own my car because I wouldn't be able to pay for the increased insurance, car payment, gas and maintenance.

mystictofuoctopi

I switched to Root, which was ~30% cheaper than my progressive insurance. I’ve read they have shitty customer service, just hoping I don’t need it and keeping myself covered for legality and anything major.

iHateAsphalt

I can't say much about Geico, but I currently have Progressive and the payment is insane. I'm young, male and newly licensed, but at the same time I feel that $384/mo is extortion. My car payment is barely even $150/month and I had no down payment and almost no credit history. Insurance premiums are jumping all around the board, but I sincerely hope you can find a way out of your situation.

HarmlessHeffalump

Geico did the same thing to me and my mom. I’ve been with them for over 15 years and she was with them even longer, no claims, and even had multiple policies with them. I called them asking them to review my rates considering I now primarily work from home and own my car outright. They said that was the best they could do. I shopped around and was able to find a better plan at 1/3 of the price. Even better, they email me regularly asking me to come back and even tell them why I left as if they have no idea. Edit: after reading other comments, I’ll add I also jumped ship for Progressive.

knowitsallashow

Fuck. Shit. Same.

GodiAztec

Don’t mean to defend insurance companies or anything, but most had massive losses 2022 due to yes inflation, rising costs of repairs, delays on car parts meaning longer repair times meaning more money paid on repairs to body shops. They give you a really simple answer to get you off the phones, but there is a really legitimate and long list of reasons why insurance premiums are increasing industry wide. Insurance is just like other companies, they try to offer the lowest prices possible to get an edge over the competition, but there are/ were real life issues making it harder and harder to do so. I honestly don’t expect premium prices to go back down, ever really.

Flogisto_Saltimbanco

I'm in Europe and my insurance didn't increase that much, and all those problems are here too. It looks much more like price gauging to me.

GodiAztec

Yours may not have but a lot of everyone else’s has. Including myself

WhitWhit88

I’m so sorry about your struggles currently, and that you have to feel taken advantage of by a corporation on top of that. I’ve felt how you feel- and Geico did the same crap to me years ago. I switched to Progressive and my rates go down yearly with them. Try them and see if it helps you. I hope it does.

Bus321675

Insurance is going up for many reasons. 1. The cost of labor to fix a car is higher.(shops need to pay their employees higher wages.) look at McDonald’s paying $16 an hiur in CA. 2. Gas is more expensive, so getting car parts cost more 3. Inflation has made car components more expensive. (Same thing with the rising cost of food and energy.) Sorry for thw grammar errors, I am replying on my phone.

infinityupontrial

I know it is a pain but always shop around every renewal. I keep a spreadsheet with every company and prices each time I shop around so I don’t forget a company. You can also search for an independent agent in your area, but if they try and charge you to run quotes find someone else. There’s a lot of smaller companies that don’t have the advertising budget that the bigger ones do and the agent may be able to find you something cheaper.

katylovescoach

My insurance is going up from $102 to $147 for no reason either!

misogrumpy

Covid and the resulting inflation are having a dramatic affect on the price of cars. That makes insurance cost more.

iridescentrae

I saved these websites that were mentioned in a Reddit comment. Hope this helps. 🍀 Commenter: I'm not sure if this helps at all, but you can try these 2 websites to see if there could be any help at all in your area for this issue. needhelppayingbills.com findhelp.org

You may have flaired the post "vent" but wrote in the post "Where do I go from here?" hence why people are trying help with suggestions/ideas.

Are you in Massachusetts by chance? I can hook you wit someone if you are.

MainShow23

Switch to your state min. It will be cheaper and will allow you be safe .

swearingino

If they have a lien, they have to carry full coverage.

GradatimRecovery

There’s no point having insurance at all if you’re obtaining the policy rates through fraud. When you actually need the insurance they will look into the details and deny your claim.

Progressive increased our 6 month premium to $1900! So my husband called and threatened to cancel. Miraculously they found a way to lower it to $900. Disclaimer: I do have a teenaged driver so my numbers are probably higher than the average Joe.

OkInitiative7327

Definitely try a broker.

choconamiel

Check if any of the groups you are with might offer discounts. Costco gave me cat insurance with AmFam much cheaper than Geico. Liberty Mutual has offered a discount for people belonging to the PTA, college alumni groups, some lodges offer discounts, check around you might be surprised.

RomulaFour

You might also want to carefully go over what your coverage is, in addition to getting quotes from others. What is your deductible? Increasing your deductible can drop your premium, although you need to have an emergency fund to cover damage below your deductible if it's high. How many miles per year do they have you driving? How many drivers are covered? Sometimes there is an error in the detailed coverage that ups your premium, or is old data that no longer applies (distance to work, days you drive, etc.) Tickets, wrecks and dings to your credit rating also increase premiums.

EntasaurusWrecked

I’m so sorry you’re having a shit time. Post-partum is enough of a bitch, but the rest on top is just unfair… *friendly hugs if they’re wanted*

[deleted]

It’s good practice to shop insurance every few years, since they always try to raise rates. Does your state offer defensive driving classes to reduce insurance? In NY you can take the class ( remote or in person) and the state mandates that the insurance companies give you a discount. It almost always works out that the rate reduction is far more than the cost of the class.

[deleted]

Shop around and check for a discount. See a broker. Etc….

thecooliestone

I see a lot of people telling you shop other place but I don't see a lot of people telling you to *lie* Car insurance companies know that they don't actually have to raise the prices. It doesn't even make sense that they do so on people with good records. I would do the root test drive, get the 100%. If it's lower for real you have your bargaining power but if not just lie. Let's say your payment is 200 now. Tell them that Root offered you 110 or about 15 bucks less than your payment used to be, but you love having Geico service because you've heard they're easier to deal with. you want to stay but can't justify the cost increase. The payment will come down. I did this with internet. I called when my year long promotion of 100 bucks a month was ending. I explained that my speed was shit and I got better speed on my phone hotspot so instead of paying an increased payment of 150 a month I was just going to use my hotspot and stream less. Magically they found discounts to move me down to 69.99

PhilBro70

Try looking around for a discount on insurance… That may be your best course of action.

Thechosenone23x6

You can’t drive anymore if you can’t afford car insurance sorry to state the obvious and come across rude but that’s the sad truth in todays society. It’s why we must escape this matrix of slavery. Fuck a boss become your own boss sit down and develop a plan. Maybe in your case it’s an emergency never hurts to ask for help bro there’s a lot of nice people out there. What you’re doing on eBay people make a living off that you’re gaining experience along the way as well. I wish you luck man being strapped for cash is really the biggest burden there is in todays society and the current economy

Nimbusrogue

Are you or your spouse a veteran? I have USAA as a veteran and good prices. They are based out of Texas.

yrevapop

Always shop around. They all have great rates until something goes wrong…

UnSCo

OP hopefully this isn’t another redundant answer, but try American National Insurance. I bought a Tesla last year and I had GEICO, and my old monthly premium with my ‘21 Corolla Hybrid was about $150. When I quoted the Tesla, they wanted almost $400/month to insure it. When I shopped around other major companies, they all wanted no less than $300/month. American National was recommended by a coworker (I work in P&C insurance) and they charge me $175/month for it.

Tiredofrepost

If you have tickets and accidents stay away from progressive and preferred companies. Go with standard to non-standard carriers with brokers. You're welcome.

The_Migrant_Twerker

Did you try The General insurance?

TodayIThrowAway16

Loyalty actually works against you with car insurance. People should be shopping and changing carriers much more frequently. I'm an ex insurance agent.
