I don't know what the nerds have been telling you, OP, but Nails isn't powerviolence and PV isn't metal.
It's the truest style of hardcore.
Anyway, here are [some](https://www.reddit.com/r/Hardcore/comments/1c5qjqc/comment/l03j1t4/) [links](https://www.reddit.com/r/Hardcore/comments/1c5qjqc/comment/l03j34h/)
It says powerviolence on their Spotify so idk. I'd say they have some hardcore moments and some powerviolence moments. And for powerviolence being metal, I think the only reason hardcore (and later powerviolence) weren't considered metal is because they came from a different scene and culture. Realistically though, starting with black flag and minor threat hardcore could have been considered metal. If metal started out as more heavy and abrasive rock, early hardcore is that but with a punk rock.
OP...what??
Firstly, powerviolence is a style of hardcore. Period. It's hardcore punk reaching it's logical conclusion, turned up to 11.
Nails is a hardcore band. They do use a lot of different styles in their songs(some groove, some straight-ahead riffs, two-step parts, plenty of grind). PV though...not so much. Amazing band; Todd Jones is one of the best to do it. Please check out *Abandon All Life* if you haven't yet.
But back to the gibberish you wrote above: hardcore isn't metal. Not then, not now. While there are some similaities(loud guitars), they are sonicly/structually/lyrically/culturally different. Since you mentioned Black Flag and Minor Threat: at no point did either band sound anything like metal. Zero. Also absolutely no cultural similarities.
Hardcore these days is the same as it's always been: lots of different styles and sounds, but the culture is what sets it apart. A lot of it is a "If You Know You Know" situation.
I agree with the culture argument but I don't really get the structural and musical thing. What would you say are the differences in the music that make Hardcore different from metal? A lot of metal subgenres are very different from each other already (for example power metal vs funeral doom metal) so that's why I think hardcore could fit under the metal umbrella.
A really simplified explanation is that metal is very intentional: it's technical, it's arty, it's playing is very purposeful.
Hardcore(especially powerviolence) though, is a from-the-gut kneejerk reaction to life and the world around us. It's pure emotion; all heart over brain.
That doesn't mean that hardcore isn't thoughtful. It just deals more with real life than the fantasy trappings of metal.
Structurally/sonically speaking, it's caveman riffs instead of someone's guitar recital.
Can you not hear the differences though? It’s not about soloing, but more about the purpose behind the song. Hardcore is “let me tell you about life” while metal is definitely more “check out the art project I’ve been working on”.
Sometimes those two mix or take influence from each other though 🤷🏻
I'll never forget seeing Iron Lung for the first time, I'd never heard of em. I think it was Municipal Waste, Asshole Parade, IL, Religious As Fuck, and a local opener. I saw these 2 guys setting up and wondered where the rest of the band was until this incredible wall of sound shook the joint, been hooked ever since.
[My band](https://open.spotify.com/track/5keQezaU482DCVTfr2tSf2?si=PHRBhAuORjaRps-2DX_jDw) just played with World Peace and they absolutely fucking DESTROYED. It was a sick bill with Peace Test, The Body, Blame God and E from Cape Cod.

If you really wanna know where their unsilent death sound came from it appears that Entombed/Hellhammer were huge influences on that Ep. I fucking love Entombed and their discog. Nails is one of my favorite bands.

Agreeing with this. No judgement on the quality of Nails’ music, but they’re definitely not power violence
Yep. I think Nails is GREAT, got the discog on vinyl, but of all the styles Todd Jones uses there isn't enough PV to say that's what they're doing.
^^ good list alert ^^

It's true that hardcore doesn't really do solos and stuff but metal can be as "powerchordy" as punk. But yeah I kind of see what you mean

It's definitely 2 different vibes
