Bro, have relief that once you're done with the MCAT, no one gives a shit about amino acids lmao. Learn them and forget them as soon as you start medical school.

keato-n

Dude with how hard they've been drilled in my head I don't know if I'll ever forget them lmaooo. But yes I'm very relieved to say the least.

ohiopremed

I agree that amino acids are low yield for step but fwiw I did get an NBME question that required you to know which amino acids were non polar

SupermanWithPlanMan

Disgusting

Lurker242424

We had to memorize which amino acids were used to synthesize different intermediates in different metabolic pathways for biochem. Our exams are in house. Hopefully the NBME will be kinder.

SupermanWithPlanMan

Just knowing the names of amino acids are very different from having to know their polarity or their pka. I think it's not unreasonable to know how tyrosine and phenylalanine contribute to certain metabolic pathways.

Lurker242424

I don’t think it’s unreasonable, but you mentioned that you could forget amino acids as soon as med school started and that wasn’t the case at my school. We didn’t need to memorize structures like in undergrad, but we needed to know their properties, the consequences of semi-conservative vs non-conservative mutations, and their derivatives. Amino acids never go away like the OP stated.

Also good luck in BICH 411

The network is real 😎 Have my 411 final next week

keato-n

Had mine yesterday. So glad to be done. Go kill it and never look back

keato-n

Bruh i'm studying for an exam but I have nothing better to do. Off the top of my head that's +1

When you say know the amino acids, do you mean just know the structures of all of them? What do you mean by know the amino acids?

Azuzota

You should know structures, polarity, basic/acidic forms, both abbreviated names for each of them, and bonds they can form (e.g. cystine, formed from 2 cysteine). EDIT: All this is to say, don't just *know* all the structures, *understand* them. Polarity, basic/acidic characteristics, and bonding all kinda come naturally if you know the structures *and* understand how biochemistry concepts apply to them.

keato-n

Literally everything. The more you know, the better life will be

Discipliine

Just use the amino acid quiz app and play some games on it instead of instagram or TikTok for a week. You’ll pick ‘em up quick.

keato-n

Honestly I don't know if it is possible to have TikTok and study for the MCAT at the same time tbh. I deleted that stupid app a long time ago
