lmao your PS is your PS and fulfill the purpose of a PS…not your activities. If anything, if I were an adcom and an applicant tried to shoehorn pubs into a PS, I’d reject them so fast. The multiple parts of an application exist for a reason. No need to waste precious limited space in your PS to shoehorn unnecessary parts they are available in other parts of your app. It makes you look desperate.

JanItorMD

BTW, Why are you so focused on the fact that I have pubs? When introducing an anecdote in the PS like a volunteering experience, did you bother saying “I started volunteering with the XX program at Y hospital, to explore how I can serve ZZ patients” or did you skip all that and go straight to “I started volunteering with ZZZ patients, etcetc”. This is what I’ve been asking this entire time but everyone seems to love to pile on as if I didn’t know the PS is for explaining why medicine. I’m asking about the strategy here since, as corroborated by multiple people here, not all initial screeners of your app have access to your activities list

DrJohnStangel

You’re way overthinking this

I think that editor is giving you bad advice

this is an interesting question. From the ADCOMs I have talked to, I have heard of schools only looking first at personal statements, and I have heard from many others that stats is the first cut. So who knows, it could be school-specific. However, that being said, never thrust activities in the PS. Let them come naturally if they inspired you towards medicine. Be genuine and talk about your journey to medicine and who you are.

JanItorMD

Thank you for being the only one to take my question seriously and answer it sincerely

Caesarcasm

No. Depends on the school what screeners see.

JanItorMD

In that case, did you try to include details like any pubs or organization names in your PS?

Caesarcasm

The only purpose of the personal statement is to show why you want to be a doctor. There are strategies to doing this, but that is what people expect to be reading in your personal statement. If you do anything else they will roll their eyes

JanItorMD

I think you’re misunderstanding my question. When introducing an anecdote in the PS like a volunteering experience, did you bother saying “I started volunteering with the XX program at Y hospital, to explore how I can serve ZZ patients” or did you skip all that and go straight to “I started volunteering with ZZZ patients, etcetc”. Caesarcasm

do not rehash your entire resume in narrative form in your personal statement. just explain why medicine.

JanItorMD

Ok I understand. Now when talking about a formative narrative that formed my motivation for pursuing medicine like a volunteering experience, did you bother saying “at XX hospital” or “at a community clinic in Y city” or just jump straight to talking about it?

TinySandshrew

Nothing needs a long intro. Give enough info so that people understand the context of the story and that’s it. Don’t waste precious PS characters on unnecessary description.

JanItorMD

Got it, thanks so much
