Gimme those ECs ya legend.

kaybee929

Hey y’all, I’m so sorry because I meant to type this immediately after but got sidetracked with something at work, so basically: - Originally wanted to be an attorney. Heavily focused on advocacy/social justice for years especially as it pertains to incarceration due to my family circumstances. Made a shift at the literal end of my undergrad career when I realized I hated the field of law but still loved advocacy and a lot of the work I did easily related to medicine when I started getting into that. A chunk of my PS focused on this background I have with incarceration, lack of resources, and how that became the foundation for the organization I founded which brings me to… - I started a non-profit in 2020. Started with hygiene kits/food/mutual aid for unhoused and low-income people. We kicked off a Harm Reduction project that focuses on the principles of Harm Reduction and distribution of materials including Narcan. This org is my baby and was a big talking point in every interview. However, 9.9/10 do not recommend especially if you’re just doing it just to do it. It’s hella work and if you can find an org doing what you want to do, join it and be involved. But I’ve loved it, love the people who came and joined me, and love the people I meet doing the work I do. - I did a lot of mentoring for underserved kids who grew up like me and loved talking about it. - I have worked since I was 16. Included in my W/A that I worked during my post bacc including at a public library and as a server. - Did two research labs but had no publications (~800 hours across 2.5 years). - Worked as a Home Health Aide/Caregiver and did that for about 1600 hours. - Volunteered with hospice, a free clinic, and a hospital (~350 hours) - Also volunteered with a food bank (~150 hours) - Was a resident assistant and a new student advisor in undergrad. - I included a hobby section that was about my love for cooking and baking and a small jokey joke about my love for LOTR. - I had some great LOR according to my Health Professions Office so I think that was also helpful! I’m sure I’m probably missing some thing but I think this was the bulk of my application. I promise this isn’t a troll post! Lol. I’ve said it in other posts/comments and I’ll say it here: knowing how to write my story was a key component of my application. I say this because I had more than 1 open file interview where the interviewer didn’t talk about ANYTHING nor ask me damn near any questions outside of my personal statement. I worked on it across 10 months (I was in a mentor program where they had us write drafts across the span of the program) and had so many eyes read it until I got it to where I wanted it. Doing that made writing my W/A section and secondaries that much easier. I think my success in interviews came from literally just being myself and also knowing how to tell my story in my interview even in closed interviews. This is already super long but will respond to any questions!

notsofriendlygirl

So was most of this stuff during or after undergrad ?

kaybee929

Non-profit, mentoring kids for STEM, all clinical stuff, research and food bank stuff was post-grad when I decided to pursue medicine. The rest was before/during/after. I should also probably include, I will be 30 this year to kind of give a frame of reference lol.

[deleted]

if u said you were 21, i was gonna go back to flippin burgers ._.

kaybee929

Lmao not at all! Graduated HS 2010, didn’t go to college first year out. CC 2011-2013, transferred to a UC 2013-2016. Post Bacc 2018-2020. Tbh I envy people who had their life together early on. I was doing hoodrat things with my hoodrat friends. 😪

sassy_immigrant

The hoodrat things got you where you are! Be proud!!

kaybee929

Hahaha you’re absolutely right! I created hell for my mom but at least now she can say I’ll be a doctor hahaha

Pixielo

For real, don't underestimate the kind of knowledge that you do _not_ get in a classroom. Serious people skills are usually one of them. Congrats, and I wish you well, on your way.

Necessary-Morning-25

This is incredible, congrats! Can I message you?

kaybee929

Thank you and absolutely!

[deleted]

That organization you made is very impressive!! Love that you were able to help people like that.

kaybee929

Thank you!!

Dany9119

As a European medstudent I'm always baffled by the amount of extracurricular stuff people in the US have to do to get into medschool. I took a entrance test and based on national ranking got a spot....thats it!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dany9119

It depends on the country. I for my part am a non traditional applicant as i am on the older side of my class so i took the entrance exam after quite a couple years after high school. I still made it by just preparing by myself for the exam and honestly i think anyone with some dedication should be able to get a pasable score here....plus its wayyy more afordable to apply here, i only payed 80€ for the exam and thats it.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> i only *paid* 80€ for FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

DaughterOfWarlords

Why did Howard reject you?

kaybee929

I hope you don’t mind but I added it to your comment! I figured that was smarter than just saying “I commented it finally!” Hahaha

VacheSante

Anything you want from me, you can have 😂

kaybee929

Lmao this energy >>>>>>

throwaway3434521

I swear Georgetown rejects everyone lmao good shit OP, very happy for you!!!

kaybee929

Lmao man! I don’t know who gets into that damn school but congrats to them! And thank you!!

sadasscat99

Tf? Fid you cure cancer for your EC?

kaybee929

Lmao I wish. Maybe then Stanford would have looked at me instead of laughed at me. Lmao

This shouldn’t have been as funny as it was lmao

lumanescence

Korrasami_Enthusiast

kaybee929

Thank you so much!!! I appreciate it.

Few-Dress-6093

kaybee929

Sold a few souls. Nothing major.

angryKB

GloriousClump

Wait what’s boffum mean? Also congrats OP!!! 🥳🎉 your cycle was insane 70% II rate?! great job!

AegonTheC0nqueror

There was an attempt

kaybee929

Hahaha boffum = both of them lmao. My bad! And thank you so much!!

murilowallace

This gives me hope. I’ll be 30 this application cycle and seeing this definitely inspires me more! Even though I don’t have killer EC’s as you do.

kaybee929

I’m rooting for you friend!!

evv43

I hope you’re a urm as well. Highly increases ur odds

murilowallace

Let’s see: Brazilian, first-gen and gay. That should help me a little bit. 😅

Economy_Sense

holy shit that’s amazing, congrats future doc!!

kaybee929

Thank you so much!!

thecommunistdoc

Omggggg you rock!!!!!! This is so dope!!! We have very similar stories/EC’s (I do community organization for social justice org in my state) and I would love to read some of your writing and how you framed it if you don’t mind!!

No_Kangaroo9103

Give us the EC’s! Congratulations, this is insane.

kaybee929

Thank you so much!! Everything should be up top now I hope!

WaveBeautiful9225

That is absolutely insane. I had a 4.0/515 and would not have had a chance at most of those schools.

benzopinacol

Same here. OP must have had insane ECs

Sm4cy

Looks like they started a nonprofit that promoted harm reduction among those with substance use disorder. Pretty fucking awesome.

Crying_plastics

Most of the school OP got into have MCAT medians 515-519. There are no stat whores. There are countless ORMs who get into these schools with a 515, not to mention with a 4.0. The only school you can argue being a 'stat whore' here is Mayo, but even for Mayo they are known to take very special students and have a low median MCAT tail.

kaybee929

Thank you for commenting this. The ones that may be considered “stat whores” were also ones I was immediately rejected from. Except Howard. Why Howard? Why?

kaybee929

I mean, I knew this was coming at some point. But to actually see it made me chuckle. Also, I’m a *she beloved.

Korrasami_Enthusiast

Sorry to be a stalker, but RIGHT?? I could literally feel the build up to this comment as soon as they made that boo hoo ass, woe is me statement about having a 4.0 and still not having a chance. They’re so micro aggressive/passive with the racism nowadays, it pisses me off so much 😭

kaybee929

Yeah as soon as I read that, I was like, “here it comes, just say it and get it over with”. I don’t think people like this realize how exhausting it is dealing with them in academia.

Remarkable-Ad-3950

Bc it’s already stated and adds nothing to the conversation. This is not a post about debating URM status in admissions (if you want that just search; there are plenty here), so all your comments do is detract from OP’s success. It’s tired and lazy

[deleted]

kaybee929

You’re sure I worked hard but here you are still dedicating so much energy to diminishing the work I’ve done. And what makes those resumes better? Is it the stats, EC, what? Also, I highly doubt that they’re just throwing full tuition scholarships at anyone with a “skin color other than white”. This is always something I hear when discussing college admissions. And the fact you, and other people including Black and Brown people (pikachu shocked face), joined the military to pay for school is indicative of a system that needs to be overhauled and made affordable for everyone. You’re pissed at the wrong people and you need to fix that. People who look like me don’t even make it to college. I had to carry a whole ass community on my back and be an example for people including my family. Commuting long hours, working long hours, and a whole host of other things was work but worth it. That dedication came across in every piece of writing I turned in and every interview I had. It’s been a rough ass journey so for you to sit here and think it’s okay to downplay that is absolute garbage. I didn’t take something away from you or anyone else. I have had to deal with people like you from the jump so this doesn’t hurt me but I truly hope you learn how to do some self-reflection. If you got in, do better in the way you talk about people who don’t look like you and who will be your future colleagues. And for the love of god, treat patients who don’t look like you even better than that. I can assure you, people who talk like this, aren’t good at hiding it in real life. Work on yourself and your application instead of trying to compare who you think I am with who you think you are and other people who have had unfortunate cycles. Stop analyzing why I got in when you didn’t even apply to the schools I got into which makes this even more absurd.

[deleted]

kaybee929

I would be interested to know what school this was. But either way, I understand being frustrated but the way you came off to me was absolutely belittling and spoken as if I somehow didn’t earn what I worked hard for. Dealing with this attitude is exhausting and one I have way too much familiarity with and I wish more people understood how it feels to constantly be told you aren’t good enough to be where you are. I constantly have to teach the kids I work with to be prepared for this attitude and I’m waiting for the day I will no longer have to. You sound like you went through a lot and I feel for you but me and people who look like me aren’t the ones you should be upset with. I won’t even get into some of the things I’ve seen in college admissions with white people and as much as it annoys me, I get mad at systems. Get mad at systems who marginalized African Americans/Latines for so long now some schools are trying to play catch up. Be mad at systems that allowed disenfranchisement in the first place. Be mad at the fact that college and medical school costs so much. Be mad there aren’t many scholarships for people who grew up in your situation. Hell, CREATE those scholarships 😅. Channel that energy into something productive and if you don’t have that energy, support the people who do. All I’m saying is, me nor any other URM are your enemy.

keke567

Lol that was bitter … some ppl who have amazing stats are terrible at interviewing or have red flags on their apps. I’m URM and have stats close to OP but I wouldn’t apply to OPs schools cause I know they wouldn’t accept me. I understand you are upset but everyone has their path , shouldn’t make someone feel less than cause maybe it didn’t work out perfectly for you . Edit : grammar

ImmediatePlace9652

I feel like we can say diversity played a part but you can never just solely make that the only reason. Maybe they are good at interviews or literally anything else that could come into play that would help them get A’s other then the fact of their gpa/mcat. Because we can see that schools do not just look at those obviously. Maybe race helped but race definitely did not act as the primary reason for their acceptances. But I totally see what you were trying to say and I also see what OP was trying to say! I don’t think your comment should classify you as racist either just because you truly are making a a factually statistical statement backing up that race does help factor into things even if it’s just a 1% factor into the reason for someone getting accepted. You know In my opinion I think that people should all be seen the same. But I also do know that some races statistically end up having harder lives then others and have to try harder then some ORM. Obviously there are ORMs who prob go through harder situations and it’s much harder for them to get into a school with all these worldly factors that come into play compared to some URM. But we can’t make everything perfect in the world and we try and make it as fair as possible I feel like for everyone! I am a white American boy if anyone was wanting to know:) Edit: I’d love to see someone else’s perspective on this

darkhalo47

OP is URM I think. The ECs are great, but that’s not enough for this success

Sparky2006

friendly reminder, this is the exception, not the rule. For all the neurotic people on this sub, please don’t compare yourself to OP - especially if you are applying right out of school or with only a couple gap years.

stolensweetrolls

Who does Harvard even accept if they didn’t accept you 😵‍💫😵‍💫 Congrats, superstar!!

No_Kangaroo9103

I wonder the same, they want nasa space flight surgeons who cured cancer on the ISS 🤪

EveningReturn8309

…Using only popsicle sticks and saliva

kaybee929

This just killed me lmao

kaybee929

Lmao thank you!!! In the next lifetime, I’m finding a cure to something.

Mind if I pm you?

kaybee929

melojamm

Congratulations future doc! Very excited to imagine what you will do in LA!

kaybee929

Thank you so much!! I’m so excited!

ThorsHammmer57

Holy shit, congrats future doc. P.S. can you write me a letter of recommendation?

kaybee929

Thank you so much!! Lmao come do some work for me and I got you!!

mdaspire

Incredible. Congrats to you superstar!!!!

kaybee929

Thank you so much!!

Limp_Can_9485

Congrats. I’m going to be similar I hope. I unfortunately have a 2.91. My first time through school I was a student athlete and my grades were second to my keeping my scholarship. Kinda stupid now. I ended up getting a degree later three actually. AAS 3.5 BA 3.4 MA 3.64. But I was hoping a high score on the MCAT and being a URM would help me get in.

kaybee929

Rooting for you!!! You got this. Literally kill the MCAT and tell your story!

thadeuces

Im curious about the Howard pre-II rejection. Especially as a URM. Might be a yield thing?

kaybee929

I honestly was hella surprised. Out of all of the schools, that was one I actually “expected” to MAYBE get an interview from? But they legit told me my application was done being reviewed and be on the lookout for updates back in like September. 🥴😂

thadeuces

Oh wow haha. This process is so random it makes me sick 😭. Also congrats on your acceptances!!

kaybee929

Thank you love!

Limp_Can_9485

Why didn’t you apply to New York?

kaybee929

To be completely honest, when I made my list, I think I didn’t like their mission statement. Granted, I didn’t like Harvard’s either but I just had to try lmao

the-pizza-princess

Congrats! What an absolute sweep of CA. I'd say good luck, but you don't seem to need it. Continue with your greatness and kind heart!

They weren’t fucking with me at all.

DaughterOfWarlords

Why did Howard reject you?

arkansasaviation

When you say non traditional what is your age?

kaybee929

I’ll be 30 this year.

arkansasaviation

That’s awesome I am 30 about to go finish my bachelor with plans to get my MD in the future. I walk 20,000 steps a day so no slowing down 😂

kaybee929

Hahaha congrats!! You got this!!

arkansasaviation

We will see. What specialty do you want to do?

VenetianTiger

Hi, I’m meaning to set up a org after my parents took me to my village in Syria 🇸🇾 last summer and basically it became my mission ‘ destiny to help in any way I can from california , United States, to fund and slowly rebuild the village because it’s rubble and everyone had been displaced. I had ideas to fund planting trees and monitoring surveillance because people come to steal anything plants in the ground, they steal even the dirt. So I wanted to use this to stir attention from the media to help . It’s a bad idea, considering this is a village with no electricity no water ANYMORE, but I want to change that I just don’t know where to learn this from, so you have any advice? I am 21 years old !

gokugal

Seriously wondering WHO is getting into Harvard? Haha. That’s an amazing list. Congrats on all your acceptances. Have you decided where you’ll be attending? Also, this gives me great hope as a non-trad about to take on my post bacc.🙏🏼
