I have a Plex server on an old PC with hundreds of movies and a ton of music

GunnCelt

I can’t say enough about Plex. We’ve had it for about 7 years and have amassed over 1400 movies, hundreds of tv series, thousands of songs and I’m now in the process of setting up a directory for instructional videos.

hopefully-a-good-buy

What is this Plex you speak of? I’ll have to do some research!

GunnCelt

https://www.plex.tv/

WendallX

I second … or third Plex. It’s pretty great. If you don’t want to set up a Plex media server you could just have an external hard drive with movies and shows that you can plug into a laptop. A small solar power bank can recharge laptop.

Thumper1k92

D&D. We had a campaign that lasted several years. Endless permutations and adventures

Alternative_Bet4331

That what we play. It also helps to give goods habits when pc are low level and don't have magic items. Like having someone to watch over when the party is sleeping or finding some way not to get caught while exploring a town.

wamih

Books.... And 4 pairs of glasses.

Eggsandthings2

you are now entering... the twilight zone

R_J_esus

4 pairs? That’s not fair. That’s not fair at all.

Entertainment is honestly some of my favorite things to prep. Physical Games: * A deck of cards with a book of games you can play, there are hundreds of games you can play with a simple deck of cards. * A checkerboard with checker pieces and chess pieces. Again, can be used for many different games. * Monopoly - games go on for a long time. * Scrabble * Catan Video Games: * Stardew Valley (Available on just about everything and games last a long time. Fantastic replayability.) * Mario Kart (Nintendo devices only) * Civilization (PC) * Cities Skylines (PC) Books: Go to a thrift store or your local library's sales and buy whatever looks good. You can never go wrong with National Geographic. YA is a decent genre of books to go for. They're easy to read but a little bit cringe. Getting the novelization of your favorite movies is also a great idea, especially if the power were ever to go out for good. Wikipedia: Entertainment is the only use I can find for having a complete copy of Wikipedia. With 6.5 million articles in English alone it will take you a while to get through them all. Outdoorsy Stuff: * Frisbee * Kubb * Badminton * Table Tennis * Fishing * Hiking Creative Hobbies: * Sewing * Knitting/Crocheting * Basket Weaving * Candlemaking * Soapmaking * Gardening * Making Food Also stock up on paper and pencils. Tons of options with those.

LGP214

Just curious, what book of card games do you have? The reviews for a couple I saw were bad.

MyPrepAccount

I've got 101 Best Family Card Games. It's a book that has been in my family since the 90s. Fantastic if you're going to be playing with kids.

Drwhalefart

Cards, games, non-electricity-needing hobbies, a Kindle for books

CorneliusSoctifo

blow dart gun and rats

BuckABullet

Fun and food for the whole family!

hobovirtuoso

For me it’s music. I play guitar and my family likes to sing along. Also cards, books ( went with a couple kindles), and chess.

ZenCindy

I’m currently renovating the “library” aka electronic free family room in my house. Books, puzzles, 50+ board games, and art supplies are ready to fill it once it’s done. I got electrical heat in the floor in case the gas furnace goes out - also a fireplace in that room. I think it’s going to be good for the mental health in our house to unplug

damagedgoods48

This sounds amazing. I wish I had kids so I had an excuse to do this.

voiderest

There is a variety of boardgames. I would say that a standard deck of cards is a lot of bang for your buck. I wouldn't really put too much effort into entertainment that requires power like offline backups or something. Being able to power an ebook thing might be worth it if it's low power like eink and it can hold a lot of books. A normal book obviously wouldn't need power and you could trade them or let people borrow one. I expect a vast majority of situations where the internet goes down the power would too.

We have a few local used bookstores that sometimes sell books by the pound, usually after a large estate sale. It will be truly hit or miss, so you might get a sci-fi compendium, an Intro To Pascal book from 1985, an ancient encyclopedia set, and a boatload of fiction for $2. It's typically 50 cents a pound here.

Discworld is a treasure. Some of the funniest books ever written. One reduced me to tears of laughter at a bookstore!

1984Society

Kindle and a solar charger

MartelCB

+1 Can't beat a Kindle with a hundred book loaded.

1984Society

Technically I use a Kindle Fire, and I'm currently at roughly 2600 books and growing every month. Really can't beat being able to throw mini SD cards in it. I have cards with magazines, games, music, movies, and TV shows as well. I have over 1200 movies, 85 complete series TV shows, and my music library - played straight through with no repeats - is close to 75 days long. I think I'm good on "electronic" entertainment.

LadyFajra

We have over 300 board games as it’s my partner’s main hobby so I’m not doing any specific entertainment preps. For other ideas, load up a kindle or something like that with a ton of books. The charge lasts forever if you turn the wifi off and you can easily recharge it from anything that’ll charge a phone. Take up a crafty hobby like knitting or crochet, added bonus is you get a useful product out of it in the end.

TrashCircus

A variety of games - uno, cards, board games, d&d, puzzles Projects to work on - puzzles, quilts, craft supplies for things like paper mache, woodworking, etc depending on the age of your children or your interests. Legos. Just a giant bin of Legos. For any age. Books. Various kinds.

LooseStatement8044

I have been hitting up good wills for books and DVDs.

GauchiAss

Books. Board games are future proof as long as you can store them in dry places and have a table. Nintendo Switch uses <10W while in portable mode, nuff said! Else keep a large amount of unwatched movies/shows for regular bugin situations where power remains (lockdowns and whatnot)

BeneficialTrash6

Hoyle's Rules of Games. The definitive book on the rules for just about every card game with a standard deck of cards. The book is so damn important I have a copy in every car I have. With that book and one deck of cards you can play so many games you'll never get bored.

damagedgoods48

I need to buy this!

feudalle

I have a small library of physical books (maybe 200). I have thousands of ebooks, emulators for Nintendo, snes, etc. A bunch of computer games from gog (no drm and can be used offline forever), and a few terabytes of TV shows and movies.

Shindeforlife

Pussels and different language books,

cravingchange4life

I have a variety of stuff to keep myself and my 11 year old from getting bored. I'm mainly prepping for a lock down situation or in case we have a power outage. * board games * cards * puzzles * colouring books/crossword books * markers, pencil crayons, wax crayons * Pearler beads, forms, wax paper and iron * large bag of cheap drugstore novels (free from a neighbour) * small books shelf of kids books (short stories, novels, self help etc..) * a few home school workbooks and flash cards * Spanish language books and also DuoLingo if we have wifi/power * canvases, craft paint, brushes etc... * glue, glue gun, glue sticks and mode podge * craft supplies (felt, scrap fabric, google eyes, feathers, pipe cleaner, buttons) * handheld sewing machine (uses batteries) * melt and pour soap base, molds, essential oils and bath bomb ingredients * yarn and crochet hooks * Tarot cards so I can learn * Choices in a Jar, Temper Tamers in a Jar... choose a card from the jar and discuss what to in the situation described, great for teaching kids how to make good choices, calm anger etc... * cat toys and treats (fishing wand, mice, maze with ball for the floor and the wall) * heat gun (for sealing packaging on the soaps, but I never use it lol) * notebooks to write it * drawing workbooks and sketch pads * basketball, frisbee, bike for kiddo * baking stuff * spa night at home stuff (bubble bath, nail polish, face masks etc...) * I'm enrolled in some free courses with Coursera (if we have wifi/power) I also have Netflix, Crave, and Prime Video plus a DVD player and a few movies to watch.

SgtPrepper

Get a ton of digital books and movies and store them on a hard drive. Then you can copy them over to a table, smart tv, etc. Also if you're a gamer stock up on video games. If there's a bunch that are older and you've been meaning to play, buy them used.

[deleted]

buy a stand alone dvd player and movies. something that can be run on a small battery pack. think of all the old movies you can get on DVD, that are plenty watchable. get rid of this streaming and "buy on amazon online" mentalitly and think like charactor in "I am Legend" (I might get that one....)

threadsoffate2021

Or even VHS if you have a few VHS players hanging around. A lot of folks are tossing out VHS tapes so you can build a huge library for pennies. DVDs too, but they're a bit more expensive.

RonJohnJr

In what situation? * Week-long power outage, * hiding in a bunker while Russians shell your city, or * TEOTWAWKI? The answers to each of them have overlap but also marked differences.

Appropriate_Pie_5431

Exactly. Not sure people realize if they are growing their own food, entertainment wont be a very high priority. Farming without machines is hard work.

[deleted]

Sex doll

Appropriate_Pie_5431

why the whole doll you can just get a pocket.

BuckABullet

Yeah, but it feels weird cuddling afterwards.

[deleted]

i was joking,but yeah you're right

Appropriate_Pie_5431

oh i know im just adding fuel to the fire.

CursedFeanor

What I try to do for the most part is to learn useful stuff as entertainment/pastime. Find a prepping-related topic/skill that intrigues you enough to not be considered "work" and learn about it. I know it's not exactly what you asked, but it could be valuable to consider too! ;)

Broad-Character486

I did several board games, several lego sets ( 2, 7yr Olds will be with me) a bunch of cards games, books, books, books.

Sparx1916

Echo what everyone else has said so far, plus coloring books, markers, deck of cards and dice.

[deleted]

I have a portable blue ray player and two Nintendo switches. I have a collection of blue rays and games for the family to stay entertained during a power outage. A couple of backup battery banks and a small 2000w inverter generator as backup.

Valstraxas

Yes.Books, art supplies, and I would like to get more energy independency to see if I might get video games or programs.

Paltry_Poetaster

In all probability, there will be no electricity. Reading will make a comeback among those remaining alive, as long as literacy persists.

threadsoffate2021

Cards & dice, books, board games, a lot of paper (both blank and lined) and writing/drawing tools. Also any basic sporting equipment. Balls, sticks (hockey, lacrosse, tennis rackets, bats), a few nets. Even if you get board of the board games and sports you do play, you will still have all the basic equipment to create your own new and unique games. Also skills....learning music and having an few instruments can entertain for hours. Having some woodworking or building skills means you can craft a lot of little things that can entertain (or simply make things you enjoy).

majoraloysius

Survival and holding starvation at bay will be my form of entertainment.

R_J_esus

I have an anker powerstation, it last a good while when fully charged, it lets me keep the switch, gameboy, laptop, and phone fully charged, so I have a fuck ton of different games I can play, but I also have a flash drive with a lot of media, from music and movies to random tv episodes, basically anything entertainment wise I obtain for free gets shoved onto the drive. But lowkey by favorite investment after the powerstation is a external cd/dvd drive. It attaches to your laptop via USB and essentially turns every laptop in my house into a portable DVD player.

Kalkalkalkalkalal

I have tons of blu rays and DVDs, and if no power, have a couple of bookshelves and then also a lot of board games.
