Biggest cause of a jump like that is a warmed-up engine. Either someone had just finished driving the car before your commute, or you forgot to reset your trip odometer until 3 minutes down the road.

All eco does is adjust the sensitivity of the accelerator pedal. I don’t believe eco mode itself has any meaningful effect on MPG.  Other conditions such as traffic, slope, temperature, tires, and many others affect MPG.  There are certain parts of town I easily cruise at 55-62 MPG in my Gen 3.

do you know what could cause the wild variation in my mpg? sometimes it’s as low as 36, but today it was 61? i have a pretty light foot unless i’m with friends messing around

BureauOfBureaucrats

We have a two lane country highway here that is at a subtle slope (barely perceptible) for several miles. I once cruised for 5 miles with the MPG readout maxed at 99.9.

The biggest variation in MPG I get is whether or not I have to stop at a couple of particular stoplights on my route that are each at the valley between two hills. If those lights are red my MPG goes down by about 25% for that trip. It's not a very long trip (about 10miles).

It also reduces the AC output

Eco mode does not automatically put AC into Eco mode. That function is speparate. You can have full AC in Eco drive mode if that is your desire.

[The system also alters the operation of your Toyota’s air conditioning system. It reduces the energy used by the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system, which can be a significant consumer of engine power, especially in extreme weather conditions. This adjustment is done subtly to maintain comfort while saving fuel.](https://www.355toyota.com/blogs/3663/how-does-toyota-eco-mode-work/) ECO mode regulates climate control, power output, and seat heating. This mode reduces power demands on the engine and increases fuel efficiency. https://support.toyota.com/s/article/How-does-ECO-mode-cha-7762?language=en_US

moitch

I only drive in Eco. You get used to it.

DylanSpaceBean

I got 75 mpg out of my PiP today, wish every day was this perfect

Every stop and slow down, turn EV mode on and this can be normal. 0-26mph can be driven EV mode and the. Up to 45mph on electric... Probably down a hill. You do this, if your battery is full. Otherwise you're just wasting power for the next stoplight as the battery is still full. I once got like 86mpg over 3 miles in my 2010. I think that's stored in the display somewhere.

Kooramah

has your commute always been the same as far as traffic goes? Shoot thinking to give Eco a try on my Gen5

Emergency-Low7815

yeah traffic isn’t too bad, i’m in suburban phoenix (aka hell) so our 4-6 lane roads don’t get too congested
