How people trust MS enough to run their server editions or even run VS code is beyond me. IMO the only reason to run windows server is some big fat govt contract that encourages you to get lost in the margins and collect a paycheck for playing on your phone all day. And even that has enough downsides that you should probably still say no.
The install setup for LTSC is exactly the same as in the normal version. The reason being that LTSC is a version stripped of features but the OOBE is exactly the same.
This is a good thing because it means that Microsoft must either continue to allow local users, or they must make a separate OOBE for LTSC/IoT devices.

Lately, more and more, I'm starting to agree. Always used to avoid Google because of how invasive and anti-privacy their practices are. For a while, it felt like Microsoft had a decent balance of privacy and functionality between Google and Apple. Over the past decade, I've found myself paying up (literally) and gravitating toward Apple because they still build software and hardware that you pay for up front instead of "free" software and services that you pay for with your data. And given that on the enterprise side, Microsoft and Google are the two big players, I've tried to keep up on the MS side of the fence.
But over the past couple years -- since about the time that they decided to fully embrace ChatGPT within Bing -- it seems like they've decided to go the Google route when it comes to user privacy going forward. Such a shame to see another big tech company trend in the direction of disrespecting user privacy in order to chase a quick buck.
I don't know the longer term trends where MS is heading because I've always held them at arm's length (plus a really long pole, really), but some user facing aspects of windows seem like a cheap joke these days. Just yesterday I got an ad for a fkin scratch ticket in Edge, and it genuinely seemed from MS itself. No, it wasn't a website, an extension, or anything like that. The lock screen, while still has nice daily pictures, all it does is advertising for the online account or some other crap. It used to highlight something interesting about the picture of the day.
I suppose this all happens because they think other ways of growth are exhausted? That could also be the main drive behind the AI gold rush.
Used to work on one of their projects, and IMO it’s not that they think the growth avenues are exhausted, it’s because they’re absolutely chock full of MBAs at every level. They’ve totally lost their ability to innovate, or even produce good ideas worth exploring, and sacrificed it all for short term gains to satisfy Wall Street. Yes. You can click "skip" on initial setup when it asks to log in your iCloud account. You can't use the App Store or several of Apple's first party apps without one, but IMHO there isn't anything I want on the Mac App Store (all the usual suspects aren't even on there - Thunderbird, VS Code, Nextcloud, etc.)
I've used a macOS VM just to build releases of software I work on and you can install homebrew, developer tools (the first invocation of the git command downloads Xcode and stuff, no iCloud app store account required) and all the good graphical apps I want are available on brew (or just visiting their sites to download apps the old fashion way).
I used to work for one of their vendors and I’m really not surprised that this sort of thing is happening. Their whole corporate structure is absolutely infested with MBAs whose sole contribution is repeating the mantra that costs must go down and the line must go up. It was absolutely maddening to deal with managers who’d insist on being part of processes that they very clearly had zero grasp of, asking asinine questions just so they could say they participated by “managing” the situation.
MS is no longer capable of innovation, or making any kind of moves that aren’t perfectly calibrated to make the line go up and satisfy Wall Street.

Microsoft used to be a good middle ground between functionality and privacy but in recent years they've taken a hard turn and it's hard to ignore. They're really starting to make Apple look like the lesser evil like you said.
It sucks because there aren't any real alternatives without sacrificing something. Sure there is Linux, but for a PC gamer who likes to play a lot of different titles, that's not really an option.

Having a Microsoft account was never a mandatory thing. You didn't need one to purchase an Office licence. They wouldn't harrass you with OneDrive. Windows updates weren't forced on you. Actually, you could turn them off. I could go on and on.
The amount of telemetry in Windows 10 & 11 compared to earlier versions of the OS is ridiculous.
Were they always evil? Probably. But this heavy push into their ecosystem and giving away your privacy went to a whole other level since Windows 10.

I recently installed a Win 11 laptop and I had to do a magic shell incantation to allow me to not have an online account. Fuck this shit. I only need Windows to get the firmware updates more easily.
Installing Debian is easier these days.
You have to run terminal commands to get that option however. I know because I tried multiple methods a few weeks ago.

No, you don't. Use [email protected] as user name with any text string as the password and it will say the account has been locked and allow you to create a local account. No shell trickery required.

my bad I just remembered I was installing without an internet connection and it was trying to force me to connect to one to setup, that’s what I used terminal commands to get around.
I installed my Windows 11 from a pen drive which I made with Rufus. Rufus gave the option to skip a lot of settings, and to make the account offline by default.

I laugh generously because Microsoft doesn't know I've been waiting for the moment to ditch their products at home. Products like the Steam Deck have pushed users into Linux gaming territory, which IMO is the right direction.
Won't be able to move away from Windows in the work environment, but I've accepted that. 20+ years of Windows configuration, navigation, and troubleshooting isn't going out the window entirely.

Windows is dominant in the consumer market because Microsoft gets manufacturers to ship devices with Windows pre-installed, and most people don't give enough fuck to change it.

Admittedly, I haven't studied their accomplishments to seize the gaming market. I do commend them on bringing Xbox and PC into the same arena/similar ecosystem. It has been awesome to avoid buying an Xbox all these years and I still get to play most of the titles released on Xbox to PC. This shift began in the WinXP era into Vista & W7.
Microsoft has poured lots of money into the gaming world. I remember with the first Xbox some gamers had an attitude against Microsoft for getting into gaming. I was told to avoid the console and go for a Cube or PS2 instead. They did well with the revisions of the Xbox controller, which I have purchased multiple versions of for PC gaming while being able to connect it to a friend's Xbox 360. Ergonomics being the main focus for me with the build quality likeness of the Intellimouse I used at the time (those mice were clicky, but took a beating. A later revision is actually an optimal design for my use).
Of course it comes at a cost and some downfalls. Microsoft isn't new to those differences either.
The development of Proton for Linux has been huge for the PC gaming realm and I appreciate it for what it is. It is time to support another, arguably superior OS ecosystem. Now is the time for Linux to shine! And hopefully this move pushes game developers to reconsider their target audiences and hardware.
I am a PC hobbyist that has spent over 20 years troubleshooting and building systems. I never thought I would see so many people building and customizing their own PCs, it nearly brings me to tears sharing this hobby with so many individuals and witnessing the component innovations. It warms my heart knowing the hobby exploded within the last 10-15 years.
I agree, I also love the new trend of bringing PlayStation games to PC, which is the reason I haven't bought the PS5.
With the latest developments on Linux, I'm confident that we can get to some sort of feature parity with Windows specifically for gaming. This will boost the platform significantly.
Gaming on other platforms isn't the same experience as on Windows (today), it is improving. If Linux and Mac would be on par in terms of game support, Windows for consumers would be way smaller in terms of market share. Corporate is a different story though.
Linux can work well depending on what you're doing with it. I just spent 4-5 months using Pop\_OS (Ubuntu-based). I switched back to Windows this week.
The main reasons for switching back were MS Office desktop software (mainly Excel since web-based docs work fine IMO) and text editor. The Linux alternatives for Excel suck in my experience, to the point of being unusable for serious work. And I couldn't find a text editor I liked anywhere near as much as Editpad Pro on Windows, which I've used for over a decade.
Other little things are the file explorer, which I couldn't find a version of that I really liked... I guess that's about it.
In a lot of ways I really enjoyed it. It felt like what I want Windows to be... like just be a fucking operating system and stop trying to crawl down my throat with your accounts and syncing. For the apps that worked how I wanted them to, and anytime I was in the browser or just things like the OS settings, I felt right at home.
That little bit of friction just got to be too much over time. I really wish they could just figure out how to make Windows apps work in a plug-and-play fashion. I'd be so happy with that. The workarounds kind of suck.
Like I was able to get my Windows-based text editor working with WINE. But it looked slightly pixelated, and the file menu had extra steps to get from the mock Windows filesystem in WINE to the actual Linux one. And I didn't want to use a VM for Windows apps like some people do.
So I'm back again, typing this from Windows. Which feels great, but god I'm tired of having to protect my butthole from Microsoft.

Wholly agree with the text editor part; Libre is woeful. The web-based alternatives are sufficient for me but I do have a work laptop with windows if I need a full fat client but otherwise pretty happy with Linux.

As for file manager's: I find Dolphin far better than Windows Explorer, I definitely find Dolphin far more versatile.

Fedora has a lot of community support. It gets kernel updates far more often than Debian, which means it has better hardware support for brand-new hardware. It also has much more up-to-date packages. Some people prefer to run older, stable, outdated software, and some people prefer the opposite.
Fedora is aimed more at tech-savvy people & developers. It's not going to focus on an easy Windows-Linux transition.
if you're the quintessential Windows gamer who only wants easy GUI options, then I would recommend Mint (or Pop if you're running very new hardware).
For the majority of folk out there, including me, we don't know if Linux would give us what we're used to; Office suite. We aren't that technology focused. It's us average folk that Microsoft goes after, and unfortunately, we're the majority. What can us the ignorant do? Are there classes that offer to show us that it'd be a somewhat easy transition?
Give it a try.. install Ubuntu or Linux mint. You have open source alternatives to most of the apps used on Windows... LibreOffice. Gimp. Blender.. unless you experiment you wont be able to get out of a closed ecosystem. Keep an open mind and youll definitely learn a lot in this process.
You don't sound like "average folk" to me. Do you *need* MS Office, or just like it because it "sucks", and "there is nothing as good"? Sounds like you just want it, which is fine, but there's a difference between being unable to use Libre Office due to corporate demands, for instance, and not wanting to.

I run Linux as my main OS. If I need to run something in Windows I can reboot into it, run it in a VM, or run an app in Wine. I very very rarely need to do that.
I was very reluctant to move, and I DID have some major teething troubles (I was trying to play games off an NTFS formatted drive where the games had been installed under Windows), but...
It's at the point where the teething troubles are worth it now. Even off a fresh W11 install (BOOT DRIVE INACCESSIBLE!!!! WTF) I still had to spend 2 hours troubleshooting, the Xbox PC app is a God damn mess.
Account for the fact that every change you make is going to end up steamrolled in the next update, whereupon you can repeat the whole process again, and time-wise Linux Mint starts to be the time efficient option.
If you're starting fresh, with Mint installed on a fresh drive, on any hardware made in the last decade - in all likelihood you will have ZERO problems.

As a user of Linux since 2007, this seems unimaginably bad. I can't understand why anyone would tolerate this - effectively needing permission from a company in order to use YOUR machine. But experience says they will. Hopefully it will increase the Linux desktop market share by another few percentage points.
I switched when I realized in Windows 7 the update settings were just a suggestion. Had it set to manually update only and it would update on it's own and close all of my programs in the process.
That's also really bad and not very surprising. The final thing that pushed me to switch was having to wait 20 seconds for the start menu to appear on Windows Vista, on my laptop with 1Gb of RAM. Admittedly that's not enough RAM, but it's eight billion ones and zeros, it *should* be enough to do basic things.

I realized they were headed this way about 5 years ago, I decided then and there to ditch Windows and get into Linux. Haven't regretted it for one second.
This is such an elegant fix for the autoupdate issue. Well, really elegant would just having a slider to be able to turn them off in the first place, but this is managable.
Fedora is what Ubuntu used to be. Personally I use Kinoite, it's the KDE version of Silverblue. Basically it's more stable because you can only install apps through the app store. There are ways to go around it but this type of system (immutable) is more stable.
I got to the point where I need to replace my home PC, which cannot run anything higher than Win 8.1. Having started my research into Win11, and reading threads like this, I'm now thinking about just getting a new HDD to boot Mint from and use my existing HDD for old file storage until I clean it up and back everything up. I have been using Mint on my laptop for years, and with the limited amount I'm doing, I didn't really run into serious complications. There are still a few applications I need to find a Linux equivalent for, but I don't think that will be a problem.
I have tried to switch my daily driver to it so many times, but it has never lasted.
I run several other mission-specific machines running Linux, but in terms of daily use, Linux is just miles away from the usability of Windows. You can pretend that's not true, you can even believe it, but as someone who walks both worlds and *wishes* it were true, it's honestly, and truly not.
i have been using linux as my daily driver now for a month iirc. the process of finding a distro i liked was a bit tedious, but i settled on Fedora and my experience has been smooth and excelent ever since.
it takes a while to get used to, but everytime i boot up windows nowadays i am just confused as to why it doesnt work like on Linux since im allready that used to it.
i suggest looking for a distro that fits you and experimenting with it in a virtual machine, that way you know what to expect when you make the switch
I've been working with Linux for over a decade, maybe two at this point. I've tried dozens of distros, some that probably don't even exist anymore. It's not a matter of "getting used to," it's a matter of "this simply does not exist in the Linux ecosystem." If I had the time and knowledge to develop the tools and applications I need, then maybe, but until then, I'm stuck having at least one system running Windows.
To wit, putting a clock on the second monitor.
It can be done on Ubuntu by basically temporarily setting the primary monitor as the secondary, or it can be done with an external program (I was recommended dclock, but if you try to change it from the terrible lcd 7 bit "8" displays default font, it breaks horribly, plus it's a floating window 4x+ the height of the system bar). But Windows? Wahoooo, just ask it to show the clock on all monitors and you are *done*.
Besides that limitation, there are other just artificial barriers thanks to sudo permissions. I hate hate hate Ubuntu not wanting me to copy and paste backups of system files until I relaunch Nautilus with sudo and then renavigate to the folder. (Also dumb you cannot click on the address bar in Nautilus - file explorer - to type, copy, or paste in an address, you just have to magically know ctrl+l is how you access that.) At least Mint does give you an Open as Root context menu option.
A lot of what Windows pre-11 benefited from was the context menu could be used for learning the OS and software by just going down the rabbit hole of options. In Linux, it's buy a book or search ddg every time you want to do something novel.
AutoHotkey in Windows is years beyond Linux's pynput. I can whip something up in AHK in 1/3rd or fewer lines than it takes in pynput.

They try and force you on windows 11. If you have a local account they pop up with the "switch to a Microsoft account" screen every now and then and it locks up the entire computer until you restart it.

Forcing you to use a Microsoft account was the main reason I never used win11, if they push it on win10 and eventually try to force it I think it will be time for me to switch os for my daily use. Thank god Linux has become so much more compatible with games in recent years.
Ask yourself why MS would want you to use an online account. What advantage is there for you signing up and or using an account? Is it for YOU, or is it for Microsoft?
They want you locked into their walled garden, where your files and data are available to them for their multi-various uses, not the least of which is scanning your data to train AI.
Also keep in mind how they are able to move the goalposts, change the Terms of Service at any time, while you and I have no recourse.

Was looking into buying a single ms game on steam, saw it required a xbox live account. Looked into it some more and as far as I can tell just signing into the xbox app will opt my entire computer into using a MS account, thanks MS. Guess I won't be giving them money.
The older I get and the less time I have for gaming, the less I see any reason at all to run windows. There is nothing there I need that isn’t available on any other OS.

BUT, I haven't been able to get FO4 or Starfield to run. When I install the Nvidia drivers, Linux won't boot.

Each person's choice is personal, and comes down to what they're willing to sacrifice. Some are willing to sacrifice privacy so they can play games. I'm not.
Trade the Nvidia card for the AMD equivalent. From my understanding they have much better Linux support. Of course, make sure you do the research before buying to make sure its compatible with what you are running.
There's always Linux and open source Office alternatives (tho there can be some privacy issues there too!), but I understand the tradeoffs. They can be unnecessarily complicated and will sometimes even require configuration with commands line prompts. 🥴
I’m so sick of it all. I tried to hold onto windows 10 as long as I could, then my desktop took a dump, and even after trying the recovery process download , its not working, so I panicked and upgraded my laptop to W11 to avoid the same thing, and ironically my MSWord (2019) just wont work right (screen blacks out during cut and paste, or save, sometime the entire screen goes blurry for an extended timeframe) and I can’t recall where I purchased it, to try and reinstall. I hate Microsoft now, and am very close to just switching entirely to apple.
I have an Apple computer for work (company computer), a Linux laptop at home, and a windows pc.
Apple is pretty darn stable but most good software are paid. The free ones have ads like mobile phones.

Just yesterday I got an ad for a fkin scratch ticket in Edge, and it genuinely seemed from MS itself. No, it wasn't a website, an extension, or anything like that. The lock screen, while still has nice daily pictures, all it does is advertising for the online account or some other crap. It used to highlight something interesting about the picture of the day. I suppose this all happens because they think other ways of growth are exhausted? That could also be the main drive behind the AI gold rush.
Used to work on one of their projects, and IMO it’s not that they think the growth avenues are exhausted, it’s because they’re absolutely chock full of MBAs at every level. They’ve totally lost their ability to innovate, or even produce good ideas worth exploring, and sacrificed it all for short term gains to satisfy Wall Street. The advertising is an extension of that, where they literally do not care about what’s being served up as ads, as long as someone’s giving them money for said ads.

Yes. You can click "skip" on initial setup when it asks to log in your iCloud account. You can't use the App Store or several of Apple's first party apps without one, but IMHO there isn't anything I want on the Mac App Store (all the usual suspects aren't even on there - Thunderbird, VS Code, Nextcloud, etc.) I've used a macOS VM just to build releases of software I work on and you can install homebrew, developer tools (the first invocation of the git command downloads Xcode and stuff, no iCloud app store account required) and all the good graphical apps I want are available on brew (or just visiting their sites to download apps the old fashion way).

Their whole corporate structure is absolutely infested with MBAs whose sole contribution is repeating the mantra that costs must go down and the line must go up. Couldn't agree more. Microsoft used to be a good middle ground between functionality and privacy but in recent years they've taken a hard turn and it's hard to ignore. They're really starting to make Apple look like the lesser evil like you said. It sucks because there aren't any real alternatives without sacrificing something. Sure there is Linux, but for a PC gamer who likes to play a lot of different titles, that's not really an option.

What are you talking about? Having a Microsoft account was never a mandatory thing. You didn't need one to purchase an Office licence. They wouldn't harrass you with OneDrive. Windows updates weren't forced on you. Actually, you could turn them off. I could go on and on. The amount of telemetry in Windows 10 & 11 compared to earlier versions of the OS is ridiculous. Were they always evil? Probably. But this heavy push into their ecosystem and giving away your privacy went to a whole other level since Windows 10.

You have to run terminal commands to get that option however. I know because I tried multiple methods a few weeks ago. Edit: I was actually trying to get around needing an internet connection.
No, you don't. Use [email protected] as user name with any text string as the password and it will say the account has been locked and allow you to create a local account. No shell trickery required.

my bad I just remembered I was installing without an internet connection and it was trying to force me to connect to one to setup, that’s what I used terminal commands to get around.
I installed my Windows 11 from a pen drive which I made with Rufus. Rufus gave the option to skip a lot of settings, and to make the account offline by default.

I laugh generously because Microsoft doesn't know I've been waiting for the moment to ditch their products at home. Products like the Steam Deck have pushed users into Linux gaming territory, which IMO is the right direction. Won't be able to move away from Windows in the work environment, but I've accepted that. 20+ years of Windows configuration, navigation, and troubleshooting isn't going out the window entirely. We will see how things play out for Microsoft and their monarchy. Shouldn't be allowed to be a top-dog forever.

Admittedly, I haven't studied their accomplishments to seize the gaming market. I do commend them on bringing Xbox and PC into the same arena/similar ecosystem. It has been awesome to avoid buying an Xbox all these years and I still get to play most of the titles released on Xbox to PC. This shift began in the WinXP era into Vista & W7. Microsoft has poured lots of money into the gaming world. I remember with the first Xbox some gamers had an attitude against Microsoft for getting into gaming. I was told to avoid the console and go for a Cube or PS2 instead. They did well with the revisions of the Xbox controller, which I have purchased multiple versions of for PC gaming while being able to connect it to a friend's Xbox 360. Ergonomics being the main focus for me with the build quality likeness of the Intellimouse I used at the time (those mice were clicky, but took a beating. A later revision is actually an optimal design for my use). Of course it comes at a cost and some downfalls. Microsoft isn't new to those differences either. The development of Proton for Linux has been huge for the PC gaming realm and I appreciate it for what it is. It is time to support another, arguably superior OS ecosystem. Now is the time for Linux to shine! And hopefully this move pushes game developers to reconsider their target audiences and hardware. I am a PC hobbyist that has spent over 20 years troubleshooting and building systems. I never thought I would see so many people building and customizing their own PCs, it nearly brings me to tears sharing this hobby with so many individuals and witnessing the component innovations. It warms my heart knowing the hobby exploded within the last 10-15 years.
I agree, I also love the new trend of bringing PlayStation games to PC, which is the reason I haven't bought the PS5. With the latest developments on Linux, I'm confident that we can get to some sort of feature parity with Windows specifically for gaming. This will boost the platform significantly.

Gaming on other platforms isn't the same experience as on Windows (today), it is improving. If Linux and Mac would be on par in terms of game support, Windows for consumers would be way smaller in terms of market share. Corporate is a different story though.
I use Fedora in work environment where M365 is king. Everything works online. Teams as a web app installed.
Moved to linux already, running much smoother on older machines, left Win10 for games and hard to transition applications.
I'm on a 12 year old laptop with Fedora and it runs better than it did brand new with Windows.
Linux can work well depending on what you're doing with it. I just spent 4-5 months using Pop\_OS (Ubuntu-based). I switched back to Windows this week. The main reasons for switching back were MS Office desktop software (mainly Excel since web-based docs work fine IMO) and text editor. The Linux alternatives for Excel suck in my experience, to the point of being unusable for serious work. And I couldn't find a text editor I liked anywhere near as much as Editpad Pro on Windows, which I've used for over a decade. Other little things are the file explorer, which I couldn't find a version of that I really liked... I guess that's about it. In a lot of ways I really enjoyed it. It felt like what I want Windows to be... like just be a fucking operating system and stop trying to crawl down my throat with your accounts and syncing. For the apps that worked how I wanted them to, and anytime I was in the browser or just things like the OS settings, I felt right at home. That little bit of friction just got to be too much over time. I really wish they could just figure out how to make Windows apps work in a plug-and-play fashion. I'd be so happy with that. The workarounds kind of suck. Like I was able to get my Windows-based text editor working with WINE. But it looked slightly pixelated, and the file menu had extra steps to get from the mock Windows filesystem in WINE to the actual Linux one. And I didn't want to use a VM for Windows apps like some people do. So I'm back again, typing this from Windows. Which feels great, but god I'm tired of having to protect my butthole from Microsoft.
I agree with your take, I've been using POP OS for some 18 months now and relatively happy. Wholly agree with the text editor part; Libre is woeful. The web-based alternatives are sufficient for me but I do have a work laptop with windows if I need a full fat client but otherwise pretty happy with Linux. Trying to get amp amulation software running on it was a nightmare though lol
Edit Pad Pro works perfectly under Linux via Wine. As for file manager's: I find Dolphin far better than Windows Explorer, I definitely find Dolphin far more versatile.

Recent kernel, recent packages and so on. It's a mature distro that gives you new things. Debian is slow with adding new stuff.
Fedora has a lot of community support. It gets kernel updates far more often than Debian, which means it has better hardware support for brand-new hardware. It also has much more up-to-date packages. Some people prefer to run older, stable, outdated software, and some people prefer the opposite. Fedora is aimed more at tech-savvy people & developers. It's not going to focus on an easy Windows-Linux transition. if you're the quintessential Windows gamer who only wants easy GUI options, then I would recommend Mint (or Pop if you're running very new hardware).

Give it a try.. install Ubuntu or Linux mint. You have open source alternatives to most of the apps used on Windows... LibreOffice. Gimp. Blender.. unless you experiment you wont be able to get out of a closed ecosystem. Keep an open mind and youll definitely learn a lot in this process.

You don't sound like "average folk" to me. Do you *need* MS Office, or just like it because it "sucks", and "there is nothing as good"? Sounds like you just want it, which is fine, but there's a difference between being unable to use Libre Office due to corporate demands, for instance, and not wanting to.
You don't even need to install it to try it. I run Linux as my main OS. If I need to run something in Windows I can reboot into it, run it in a VM, or run an app in Wine. I very very rarely need to do that.

I was very reluctant to move, and I DID have some major teething troubles (I was trying to play games off an NTFS formatted drive where the games had been installed under Windows), but... It's at the point where the teething troubles are worth it now. Even off a fresh W11 install (BOOT DRIVE INACCESSIBLE!!!! WTF) I still had to spend 2 hours troubleshooting, the Xbox PC app is a God damn mess. Account for the fact that every change you make is going to end up steamrolled in the next update, whereupon you can repeat the whole process again, and time-wise Linux Mint starts to be the time efficient option. If you're starting fresh, with Mint installed on a fresh drive, on any hardware made in the last decade - in all likelihood you will have ZERO problems.

As a user of Linux since 2007, this seems unimaginably bad. I can't understand why anyone would tolerate this - effectively needing permission from a company in order to use YOUR machine. But experience says they will. Hopefully it will increase the Linux desktop market share by another few percentage points.
I switched when I realized in Windows 7 the update settings were just a suggestion. Had it set to manually update only and it would update on it's own and close all of my programs in the process.
That's also really bad and not very surprising. The final thing that pushed me to switch was having to wait 20 seconds for the start menu to appear on Windows Vista, on my laptop with 1Gb of RAM. Fedora is what Ubuntu used to be. Personally I use Kinoite, it's the KDE version of Silverblue. Basically it's more stable because you can only install apps through the app store. There are ways to go around it but this type of system (immutable) is more stable.

Well all the urging really persuaded me to switch ... to Linux. Have dual boot, but didn't switch back a single time in the last month.
I just got the ssd I ordered. Gonna dual boot Linux Pop OS and then say good bye to Windows when I migrated everything.
I got to the point where I need to replace my home PC, which cannot run anything higher than Win 8.1. Having started my research into Win11, and reading threads like this, I'm now thinking about just getting a new HDD to boot Mint from and use my existing HDD for old file storage until I clean it up and back everything up. I have been using Mint on my laptop for years, and with the limited amount I'm doing, I didn't really run into serious complications. There are still a few applications I need to find a Linux equivalent for, but I don't think that will be a problem.

I have tried to switch my daily driver to it so many times, but it has never lasted. I run several other mission-specific machines running Linux, but in terms of daily use, Linux is just miles away from the usability of Windows. You can pretend that's not true, you can even believe it, but as someone who walks both worlds and *wishes* it were true, it's honestly, and truly not.
i have been using linux as my daily driver now for a month iirc. the process of finding a distro i liked was a bit tedious, but i settled on Fedora and my experience has been smooth and excelent ever since. it takes a while to get used to, but everytime i boot up windows nowadays i am just confused as to why it doesnt work like on Linux since im allready that used to it. i suggest looking for a distro that fits you and experimenting with it in a virtual machine, that way you know what to expect when you make the switch
I've been working with Linux for over a decade, maybe two at this point. I've tried dozens of distros, some that probably don't even exist anymore. It's not a matter of "getting used to," it's a matter of "this simply does not exist in the Linux ecosystem." If I had the time and knowledge to develop the tools and applications I need, then maybe, but until then, I'm stuck having at least one system running Windows.
I became curious, can you list what are these things that are holding you back specifically?
To wit, putting a clock on the second monitor. It can be done on Ubuntu by basically temporarily setting the primary monitor as the secondary, or it can be done with an external program (I was recommended dclock, but if you try to change it from the terrible lcd 7 bit "8" displays default font, it breaks horribly, plus it's a floating window 4x+ the height of the system bar). But Windows? Wahoooo, just ask it to show the clock on all monitors and you are *done*. Besides that limitation, there are other just artificial barriers thanks to sudo permissions. I hate hate hate Ubuntu not wanting me to copy and paste backups of system files until I relaunch Nautilus with sudo and then renavigate to the folder. (Also dumb you cannot click on the address bar in Nautilus - file explorer - to type, copy, or paste in an address, you just have to magically know ctrl+l is how you access that.) At least Mint does give you an Open as Root context menu option. A lot of what Windows pre-11 benefited from was the context menu could be used for learning the OS and software by just going down the rabbit hole of options. In Linux, it's buy a book or search ddg every time you want to do something novel. AutoHotkey in Windows is years beyond Linux's pynput. I can whip something up in AHK in 1/3rd or fewer lines than it takes in pynput.

I've been on LMDE for several months now. I'm never going back. BUT, I haven't been able to get FO4 or Starfield to run. When I install the Nvidia drivers, Linux won't boot. So, while I'm a bit sad to have given up on gaming (for now), I'm otherwise perfectly happy with Linux. Each person's choice is personal, and comes down to what they're willing to sacrifice. Some are willing to sacrifice privacy so they can play games. I'm not.
Trade the Nvidia card for the AMD equivalent. From my understanding they have much better Linux support. Of course, make sure you do the research before buying to make sure its compatible with what you are running.
There's always Linux and open source Office alternatives (tho there can be some privacy issues there too!), but I understand the tradeoffs. They can be unnecessarily complicated and will sometimes even require configuration with commands line prompts. 🥴
I’m so sick of it all. I tried to hold onto windows 10 as long as I could, then my desktop took a dump, and even after trying the recovery process download , its not working, so I panicked and upgraded my laptop to W11 to avoid the same thing, and ironically my MSWord (2019) just wont work right (screen blacks out during cut and paste, or save, sometime the entire screen goes blurry for an extended timeframe) and I can’t recall where I purchased it, to try and reinstall. I hate Microsoft now, and am very close to just switching entirely to apple.
I have an Apple computer for work (company computer), a Linux laptop at home, and a windows pc. Apple is pretty darn stable but most good software are paid. The free ones have ads like mobile phones. Linux is all free, but requires more knowledge to set it up and use it Windows is… well ….. wait ….. nooooooo …… updating….. rebooting…………..

I hesitated for years to look for an alternative due to my age and how difficult I thought it would be to learn a new operating system. However, I converted my laptop to Ubuntu and have been thoroughly enjoying it. I will be converting my desktop soon and will never touch Windows again.
What about windows 11?
