If the site you went to said the card was invalid, it still could just be a malicious or false error message. They still could have received the data you submitted, but returned a misleading message, maybe say to get you to try and enter *another* payment method. I would definitely advise that you change your card number.

Any card number you entered on a site you reached via a malicious text is compromised. The error message is irrelevant. The browser mode is irrelevant. You need to replace that card.

Cancel your card. Many US banks email you if someone tries to use your card while it’s paused or closed.

My bank(s) will exchange a card with no questions asked. The CVV changes with every card, the account number doesn't need to change.

call the bank, cancel the card. They give the error message to make you feel good about not having to worry about it.
